Periodically I have to go out in the field (to the tear-down area) and do a
quick shot of a transmission case.
But using an on-camera flash just doesn't cut it. Not enough light for good
dof and, worse yet, straight-on reflects some of those flat edges too bright
for a consistent exposure.

A tech/curiosity point:
Could it be that older lenses cause fringing because they focused the color
spectrum on the film in a manner that accounted for film thickness,
but since digital sensors are flat an achromatic design works better for
digital than for film?

Amid a loud chorus of "No!", here's my struggle.
Glass takes up space. It's heavy to carry around.
(Which is why I gave up 8x10 -- and THAT was difficult!)
I have 3 zooms
FA28-105, 18-55WR, and Sigma 70-300
And some primes
FA35/2, FA28/2.8, F50/1.7, M*300/4, and the 70/2.4LTD
Plus the F 1.7xTC
Nice. Here are two thoughts:
1 - People still dance? We do, but I don't see many.
2 - Try this: Keep the high contrast of the original's foreground unchanged
then open up just the sky on the horizon.

Reports on this 28-105 have been pretty good, so today's lunch exercise is

Imagine doing that over the plane from a nice Rodenstock or Schneider 4x5 or
larger format lens.
Probably the least expensive way might be an APO Nikkor 240mm. Covers
almost 8x10.
And process lenses are generally sharper than LF.

I can't comment about the shorter zooms, but the Sigma 70-300 DG proved
itself to me.
Later I'll post some of the shots taken by my son at about 60 ft (across a
gymnasium) at my graduation in May.
It's the only Sigma that I have not named "stigma."
