Nice capture Ann... Not to detract from the capture but I am curious to know what are people's reactions to you taking a picture they may appear to be in. This goes for you and anyone on the list. I am thinking about going downtown around 2nd avenue to some weekend and want to know what to expect as far as people and being able to snap their picture. You have two options. One is to make yourself invisible, the other is to make yourself unmissable. The worst thing to do in my opinion is to creep around furtively trying to 'sneak' pictures, although sometimes it seems to be the only way. In any case, confidence is everything. That plus a winning smile. People are generally ok with it. Even then, sometimes people can get a bit annoyed with you, and you just have to learn to deal with it. Re: Zenit
This shelf is just a small part of my collection of soviet cameras. Speaking of Zenits, I do have couple of Olympic ones (TTL, E) as well as other commemorative versions (there have been quite plenty of special versions for different Communist Party Congresses, October Revolution anniversaries etc.). All of those are carefully packed away to the boxes as I do prefer pure cameras on display. More cameras and less ideology, if you like :) BR, Margus On 05-Mar-11 10:33 PM, mike wilson wrote: On 05/03/2011 10:37, Margus Männik wrote: Well, memories, seventies... just two steps to go, door to open and... http://home.uninet.ee/~margus02/peso/shelf.jpg :) BR, Margus Excellent! Thanks. The guy who sold it to me had an advert, selling it with an f. 1.2 50mm. But sadly he sold the f. 1.2 lens seperately allready. Never mind - this lens is probably a colectors item, not really a user lens. I remeber reading it's not very sharp wide open anyway. I'm actually looking to buy a better 50 mm (for portraits). I own an FA 1.4 50mm - but it's not sensational. I want an F 1.4 50mm or a FA 1.7 50mm. Or perhaps a Carl Zeiss 50mm dedicated with K-mount (expensive). Re: PESO - Fox tracks
2011/3/5 Bob W p...@web-options.com: that's a very beautiful picture. How do you know it's fox? Hmm... One indicator is the apparent gait. The fox likes to travel at a light trot even on bumpy terrain, consistent with the pacing of these tracks. The only possible mix-up is with a dog of similar size. The decisive difference between dogs and foxes is the width of the paw imprint, so my photo can't prove anything. If it was a dog, however, it would have to be a stray. The only human track was before the last snowfall five days ago. The likelihood of a stray dog is very small. I don't believe it would have the necessary hunting skills for these conditions. Current snow depth is more than a meter. Evenin' all Everything from big weather to no weather Lots of good stuff for your viewing pleasure, although still only limited interest in the 'Open Gallery' concept. You'll find the gallery here: http://pug.komkon.org/ Please note (in case you missed the recent 'PUG image sizes' thread). There is a slight change in how images are displayed. Any image too large to display without scrolling on most desktop monitors, will be seen at a reduced size. In this gallery the images most affected by this are those by Bong, Matthew Hunt, John Coyle and Bruce Walker. To view an image at its original size, just click on the displayed image - the original size image should appear in a new overlaid window (if you have javascript disabled, the original size image will still appear but you will need to use the browser's 'back' button to return to the gallery). If you have problems with this, please let me know. I've tested it on Firefox 3, IE8, Opera 10, Chrome 9 and Safari 5 (Win version) and it seems to be working OK (but how did Chrome get to version 9 so quickly?). I thank you both for your suggestions. When we went last Saturday to Mt. Olivet Cemetery we ended up going downtown and turning onto 1st avenue. Which we should have known it would be busy but I did not realize just how many people were downtown. Being the Country Music capital there were and are a lot of musicians on the different corners and a lot of different tourists as well as locals hanging out around the stores and bars downtown. It would be an interesting photo capturing trip to spend either the evening or morning taking pictures. I will just have to figure out a good place to park so it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to do so. You can try to do so my trial and error or by shooting some very controlled shots (such as color targets under well defined lighting) and work from there, but personally I think it will be a bit of a Sisyphus' labor. My understanding that more recent Pentax own software is based on SilkyPix engine. It therefore would stand to reason that SilkyPix would have a bit of 'advantage' over others, but like I said - LR does it for me and LR 3.0 was a very welcome improvement in debayering algorithm and other aspects of processing. Re: Curve transfer for RAW. Is there such a thing?
There are several of areas of differences where image quality is concerned with raw conversion. Let's consider the process, to first order approximation: - chroma interpolation is the stage where the raw processor takes the bayer matrix data and extracts from it RGB channel organized data ... an intensity map of RGB values layered one on top of the other to produce the final full spectrum color image ... also called demosaicking. - gamma interpolation is the stage where the linear capture gamma of the sensor is curved to approximate the 2D-PDE gamma response of the human eye. This involves compressing high values together and expanding low values out to one degree or another. - defect removal is where the raw conversion isolates obviously anomalous values (eg: a single photosite's 255 value next to surrounding photosites with 100-110 values indicates that this is a hot or stuck photosite value). - camera calibration profile application is the step where the characteristics of a particular camera are brought to bear in adjusting the final balance of RGB channel mix. Different raw processing algorithms perform each of these operations slightly differently, but the largest influence on the image quality, at least with regards to color and tonal values, is the last step of applying a camera calibration profile. This is the part where Silkypix' close association with Pentax might have some small advantage over other raw processors when used at the raw conversion defaults. Why? Because Pentax shares both their internal camera calibration profiles along with details of how to read the in-camera image processor settings embedded in the raw file as metadata with the engineers writing Silkypix. However, this only really affects the quality of the conversion at the defaults. My testing and evaluation of raw processors is getting a little long in the tooth now, but the end sum of about two months testing with all the capable raw processors in the past showed that all of them could achieve very nearly the exact same thing *given sufficient time and expertise in adjusting their settings*. This last can take substantial amounts of effort in some cases. By and large, the current best practices in raw conversion algorithms are those that Adobe is putting into Camera Raw v6.x and Lightroom v3.x, and there are a couple of competitors (Raw Developer is one) that are almost at the same level. Camera Raw and Lightroom have as advantage a semi-open architecture as you can take advantage of the Adobe DNG Profile Editor and generate camera calibration curves which are arbitrarily close to or better than the ones that Pentax uses, depending on your likes and needs. So, in direct answer to your questions, Is there a practical way (other than trial and error) to use/copy/replicate the effect of a curve of, say, Silkypix for another raw developer? Yes. Or, the curves are hidden, embedded, protected etc.? Yes, well, they're either embedded in the application or supplied to the application in data formats that are not easily decomposed, for software other than the Adobe software. But with the appropriate amount of work, the Adobe software can be manipulated to an indistinguishable value. It's important to remember when thinking about this stuff: digital image processing and chemical image processing are separated by a significant chasm. Chemical image processing has to do with the relative behavior of photo-sensitive chemicals by nature of their molecular structures. This is complex but, from the point of view of a photographer working in a darkroom, provides only a limited degrees of freedom from the baseline established by the nature of the recording medium and the interaction with available chemistry. Digital image processing, on the other hand, is all numbers and mathematics. The degrees of freedom in processing a digital image are substantially greater than the degrees of freedom in processing a film image. It simply requires that you understand how to work the mathematics, through software tools, and have sufficient data to work with. However, experienced photographers have always used their favorite film with their favorite developer without necessarily taking those suggestions into account. Now, Pentax suggests Silkypix to develop their raw files. Let us say, I like the look of the raw files developed by Silkypix. And, let us assume that I happen to like Brand X Raw Developer, which is very good in certain regards. However, the look of the

Yeah, I thought about that as I was composing the response. The difference, for me anyway, is that even though the Mac is pretty locked-down, too --not really, though -- the Apple people seem to understand human beings better, to know what they're looking for, what will work for them. Everything works. Straight out of the box. It's unobtrusive. In contrast, MS's attempts to be helpful almost always irritated the hell out of me. On Mar 6, 2011, at 11:34 AM, P. J. Serial photography
A week or 2 ago there was a brief discussion in which someone - sorry, can't remember who - suggested the idea of telling a story in 4 photos. By coincidence I ordered a few weeks ago a book called Serial Photography, which arrived yesterday. It's by Harald Mante, a photographer whose books I've mentioned before - Photo Design (my particular favourite) and Colour Design. This new book is about displaying similar pictures in multiples - the strapline of the book is 'Using themed images to improve your photographic skills'. It's full of very interesting ideas and well worth looking at if you get the chance, with numerous ideas for photographic practising, like doing your scales on the piano. I like Harald Mante's books. His pictures are very good but not great - they are about form more than they are about subject matter, but they can make you think; they are deceptively simple. But his greatness is as a teacher of photographic composition. The great photographers of subject matter, such as HCB, are masters of form and composition, which they use as tools to show the subject matter in the most effective way possible, so I think it's very important that photographers try to understand master these techniques, even if it's only to reject them, just as painters like Van Gogh and Picasso were trained in the academic method and went on to reject it. Where this book differs from the story essay is that the traditional story essay is narrative, whereas these photographs are not - their effect comes from the juxtaposition of photographs which are similar, but different enough not to be repetitive. It would, of course, be possible to construct a narrative using this technique, for example by some sort of sequence or time lapse. http://www.harald-mante.de/ Bob -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Totally OT - Mark!
I just realized that this story might be sound especially funny to PDMLers. First, historical background: In Russia, the flagman institution in Physics education is Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), so-called PhysTech. The main way of getting to it is by a suburban train (about 25 minutes from the one of the main railway stations in Moscow). The station where PhysTech is located is called Novodachnaya. A lot of people (students, faculty) usually get off at it in the morning from 2 trains that arrive there between 8 and 9am. The previous station, where seemingly nothing significant is located (and usually much fewer people use it) called Mark. There is a legend that tells why that station is called that way. One of the famous professors, Mark Aiserman (a world-reknown specialist and an author of a textbook on analytical mechanics) was afraid to miss his stop, and so, he was asking all the students and colleagues who he saw entering the train to remind him about the station. And since he was always taking the train at the same time, even the train engineer knew that, and was announcing via PA system: Mark, the next station is Novodachnaya So, the previous station started being called Mark. Re: Advice solicitation for analog shooting
The problem with an incident light meter is that the measurement should, though it doesn't have to be, depending on conditions, be made from the /subject/ location. On 2/9/2011 10:18 PM, Paul Stenquist wrote: On Feb 9, 2011, at 10:05 PM, Walter Gilbert wrote: Thanks for the explanation, Collin. When Paul said to overexpose, I was actually thinking it sounded counter-intuitive -- that you'd want to under-expose in a snowy situation. But, it makes sense now that you explained that the meter assumes a neutral grey. So, I'm assuming that in extra-low-light situations, I'd want to under-expose by a couple of stops in that case. No. It's not amount the amount of light. The reason you overexpose snow or anything else that fills your frame with white is simply because it's white and very reflective. Like Collin said, the meter assumes everything is 18% gray and reflects the amount of light that an 18% gray surface would reflect. So shooting a white subject in low light, you would still overexpose. Shooting something totally black, you would want to underexpose by about one stop, since black doesn't reflect much light.. Again, using the gray card and exposing to the meter reading is usually better in really tricky lighting situations. Another alternative is an incident meter, which measures the light source rather than the scene. As with the gray card, you don't have to correct for the reflectivity of the subject when shooting with an incident meter. Re: OT So, cyclists,....
I've done the Haleakala (around 10,000 feet @ the top) down hill on Maui several times (used 'Cruiser Bob's outfit) several years ago - and am pretty sure we went at least 30mph in spots. We were required to wear full face helmets as used in auto racing. They had 'mega brakes' installed on some heavy duty frame bicycles. A little intimidating, especially on the bus ride up as the guides tell you about all the possible dangers - by the time you get to the top you're asking yourself if you still want to do it. But once you start it is quite a rush you only have to pedal for a very small part of the total trip to the bottom. Re: Sensor Cleaning
I don't know of any bona fide, examples of cameras being ruined but I have ruined clear plastic parts cleaning them with off brand caned air cleaners. I have had no problems with relatively low pressure systems such as dust off, as long as you handle them correctly., (as Bill described). The brand I currently use is 3M Dust remover, it's less expensive than dust off but just as reliable. The silence was astounding. Caveat: Always squirt a wee shot of gas anywhere but inside your camera before blowing off the sensor on the off chance that there actually is some liquid propellant in the nozzle. Cheers Brian ++ Brian Walters Western Sydney Australia http://lyons-ryan.org/southernlight/ The gallery is overall really terrific - surprised there were no flood photos I almost used one from the 1993 midwest floods couple more personal stand outs for me are France Waller's Me in Denali in Orange really tells the story. (I've been on that bus and route in bad weather, but not as foul as that.) Steve Sharpe's Breaking Wave perfect timing. ann Bruce Walker wrote: On 11-03-06 7:35 AM, Brian Walters wrote: Evenin' all Everything from big weather to no weather Lots of good stuff for your viewing pleasure, although still only limited interest in the 'Open Gallery' concept. You'll find the gallery here: http://pug.komkon.org/ On my first glance through this the thought that came immediately to mind was, wow! there's a great deal of talent on this list. My faves include, * Dreaming of a White Christmas by Henk Terhell * Before the Storm by George K. Vlachou * Snow Devil by Ann Sanfedele But the best in show has got to be, * Lofoten by Dag Thrane Dag, I hate you. ;) A terrific gallery.
