From: Aahz Maruch a...@pobox.com I should add, following the line of thought, that any/every camera is capable in the hands of one who knows how to best use it. That's half-true, at best. My Nikon P7100 just isn't good for low-light photography (although it's considerably better than my previous Canon A710). Similarly, no camera is good if you hate to use it (you can argue that it's capable, I suppose, but that smells of wrong question). Really? Oh Yeah. I just found the camera of my dreams.
That certainly is a lot of camera for the Mr. Rich. But who would need it? Certainly not me, an average enthusiast, happy with my Pentax DSLR. Of interest to a specialist photographer perhaps, who can afford an Assistant to carry that stuff with its equally costly Tripod. Or a Collector of fine art. I saw a Lady with an assistant in the streets of Paris last autumn, filming ornate and historical buildings. I remember as a child, this type of wooden plate camera was very common in every city and town in India - in studios and even on the roadside where the photographer stood with his props on canvas - a sports car, an aeroplane, the Taj Mahal etc. He would charge you peanuts for a BW photo. In fact one of the largest wooden - brass plate camera manufacturer in the world was from Delhi, India. British and French Companies would buy from them and then affix their own shiny brass name plates. I've seen these cameras for as low as $ 200 in EX+ condition on EvilBay. Do send us some photos after you buy this contraption for $ 1700 Collin Aahz Sir. Regards. Bipin - from that far away enchanting land. Re: Multiple Brands or Switching - a Trend?
Well said. I'm in about the same place. I still shoot professionally but the bulk of my shooting is for personal enjoyment. The K-5 and DA* lenses are completely capable of providing top quality newspaper and magazine work, and some of my primes, like the K85/1.8 and FA 35/2 are a lot of fun. I don't work for top shelf glossy books like Vogue or Architectural Digest, but the magazines I do work for do't want any more pixels that I can provide, and the newspapers always want them downsized a bit. Since I shoot cars for the most part, the DA* 60-250 is an ideal lens, and, according to my clients and their art directors, it produces superb detail and sharpness. I would like a full frame camera to play with, but I don't need one. I'm always somewhat surprised that so many photo hobbyists just can't manage with their Pentax gear and are endlessly seeking nirvana in multiple systems. Just taking pictures is more fun, IMO. Paul On Apr 14, 2013, at 1:43 AM, Mark C pdml-m...@charter.net wrote: Pentax has gone through a lot of changes in the last decade. In the late 90's Pentax offered a lens lineup that was easily on par with Canon and Nikon and offered a lot of specialty items. On the long end - 600mm f4, 400mm f2.8, 300mm f2.8, 400mm f5.6 - and short end - 15mm, 20mm autofocus and the F 17-24 fisheye They also had an excellent range of macro lenses and enjoyed full third party support from Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina. But they missed the transition to auto focus bodies big time and were playing catchup in camera bodies, particularly WRT AF and evaluative metering. Today the the lens lineup is much weaker, though it is improving. Pentax still lags on bodies though at this particular moment in digital camera design that is more in regards to sensor format and megapixels. If and when I can't get Pentax gear to do what I want to do, I'll switch brands. I spent a bit of money on a replacement for my A*200mm macro lens a while back, but it was a calculate decision. I set my top purchase price at something less than the cost of a comparable Nikon or Canon body, their 200 or 180 macro, and flash and other essentials for a new system. For me, that analysis highlighted the costs that come with switching. Making a total transition from one system to another, if you are seriously invested in lenses, bodied and flashes, is very expensive. Selling your old gear and buying new is expensive. Trying to maintain two systems is even more expensive. If one is lightly invested then it makes sense to move on. Or start a second system. For me, buying into the Q system is really just going iwth a second system since there is only limited overlap with the core Pentax gear that I already have (mostly wrt flashes.) I am hoping that we see something out of Pentax - Ricoh that tells us that they are serious about the K-AF mount and it's corresponding glass. I really don't care if they lag the market regarding FF dslr, but let's face it - the day is not far off when FF will be the consumer standard for DSLR. The most worrisome thing that I can interpret form Pentax Ricoh's comments on FF DSLR's is that they may think that FF is a passing fad. That would be delusional thinking - something that the old Asahi Pentax might have indulged in but Ricoh is a much smarter and hardened company. After all, Ricoh was one of the first significant film camera manufacturer to get out of the film business and switch to digital only. These days, I am just shooting as a hobbyist and all my needs are met with the glass I currently own and the bodies I currently have. While I want new toys and would love to have a full frame dslr, I don't need one and am happy with the images I get from the K5. I didn't give a damn about the poor AF and AE Metering of the PZ series of bodies back in the 90's either. But I am reluctant to continue to invest in a system whose future is up in the air. I would certainly never buy something like the DA 560 unless I knew what body would be around to use with it in the future. There is a lot of uncertainty regarding Pentax's future direction regarding bodies and glass. They seem to be aware of this and the lens roadmaps appear to an attempt to address that. A road map WRT bodies would be even more important. Mark On 4/13/2013 9:38 AM, George Sinos wrote: I think I subscribed to PDML in 2000 or 2001. I handled a Panasonic GH3 the other day as well as an OM-D. Both are electronic viewfinder cameras, so have a fairly traditional finder but no mirror. and are close enough to DSLR in operation that the lack of a mirror is moot. I feel quite fortunate that the Fuji X-Pro1 and the 35/1.4 standard lens fits that description. I can agree with you there, except that I would like a fast wide angle instead of a standard. I bought the Fuji x100 some months ago when I needed an extra camera and decided to try something different. I love it, even though the EVF ias good as the later models. In my view the Fuji system does compete with the Pentax DA Limited lenses providing a good, compact, system and I am tempted to sell them and get the X-Pro with 18mm f/2, 35mm f/1.4 and 60mm f/2.4. On the other hand Pentax does compete in other areas such as speed, weather sealing and stabilization (as well as telephoto for those interested in that area). So I think the Fuji system would be a supplement, not an alternative, to a Pentax system. I would probably keep the DA*-lenses, the FA31 and buy some update of K-5. So I would have multiple brands. Assuming I buy an SLR, I'm basically wavering between the K-5 and the OM-D, I certainly don't want anything bulkier/heavier (especially for telephoto work). I picked Pentax for my upcoming cruise because I wanted weather sealing and m4/3 is really lacking there. I suspect it's not just cost that keeps people from full-frame even now, given the overall success of m4/3. If I wanted to be picky, I would point out that the OM-D isn't an SLR but I'm not going to be picky That is indeed precisely my point: for anyone who never used a film SLR or mirror-based DSLR (and even for many who have), mirrorless ILCs are functionally SLRs using the duck test (this talks about programming, but should be clear enough, particularly if you just read the intro and history): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duck_typing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duck_typing#History The OM-D looks like an SLR, acts like an SLR, and has zero functional difference from an SLR aside from the EVF. The K-01 looks and acts less like an SLR, yet is strongly connected to an SLR lens family. I basically use DSLR to refer to ILCs in general, I see plenty of other people doing the same, I think it's a lost cause. ;-) -- Hugs and backrubs -- I break Rule 6http://rule6.info/ * * * Help a hearing-impaired person: http://rule6.info/hearing.html -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Multiple Brands or Switching - a Trend?
This post was too long to go through, so trimmed Cotty's quoted material. I have a hard time recounting my personal history re cameras, because I sort of forget it. I remember the names of the Canons I've had (mostly), but not the Pentaxes (because I am with Canon now is probably the reason). But you've recounted a lot of the reasons I finally, permanently, switched to Canon. Here's my history (without specific camera body names): Pentax film, Pentax film, Canon film, Canon digital, Pentax digital, Canon digital, Canon digital. All SLRs and DSLRs. I like a viewfinder. I mainly switched to Canon permanently for two reasons AF and lens line up. I wasn't interested in the * ist D either. That is about the point that Pentax lost me. It took so long to come out and for a long time it was the only one. I was still somewhat open to Pentax, because I had tried the Canon Elan (film), my introduction to Canon, and I truly hated that camera body. But it was around the time of the * ist D that zoom lenses also became an issue for me. Pentax just wasn't bringing them out. I've never been a wide-angle person and never been snooty about primes -- I used zooms from the get-go, even with Pentax. I think I prefer ease of use to anything. Once I used the Canon Rebel, I started being hooked on Canon. It was just the right size and had better AF than the Pentaxes I had used. I loved that camera. I've never gone for higher end cameras, mainly because they are always bigger. I am quite happier with consumer grade cameras. Size is a very important issue for me. I don't have a lot of upper body strength and I don't like lugging a lot around in the field. Usually I carry one camera and one lens with me and leave the bag and the other lenses in the car. At most I take two lenses with me, one on the camera and one in a bag (Tamron, I finally found one that is really only set up for one camera and two lenses.) I've never been sure that men really understand the weight and size issue as it pertains to women. :-) Then Pentax, now remember this may not be exact, brought out two zooms (one being the 16-55? 45?, I don't remember, but a lot of you guys still have them/it). I had originally liked Pentax so I got the DS (I think, it could have had another name), and the 16 whatever. So, briefly, I had two systems. But, even though I liked the Pentax (it usually has a simpler and clearer interface) and the lighter weight of the lenses (Canon's are wide-mouthed and a lot heavier), I found nothing in the DS that really beat out the Canon rebel. Frankly, the AF didn't feel as good. As to ergonomics, I have a hard time finding buttons on the camera anyway, so I really never noticed a huge difference between any camera brand and another, I always still have to hunt around. Until I get used to a camera, then it becomes second nature somehow (until I have to use a button I haven't used for a while, then I still have to hunt around). I don't think I have ever learned my camera bodies the way some of you have. On the other hand, when I am shooting I am not thinking much about the camera at all. So it probably was the line up of camera lenses that Canon has (and Nikon too) that was the final determining factor. I am an impatient person and I liked that I didn't have to wait for lenses to come out -- that there was already a vast selection I could choose from, from cheaper end to higher end. I had waited a lot with Pentax. And switching systems wasn't/isn't a big thing for me. I never had the investment in glass some on this list have/had. But, also I am willing to downgrade when I switch. Sell 1-3 lenses to get one. Usually that is the way it has gone. Sell camera and lenses and get one new body and one new lens. You really only need one lens with a camera body when you start out. Then add on from there. Also, I often buy used, especially used lenses, and it's often just a matter of hunting around. Also, I am not really a gear person. I am interested in gear, but only as it pertains to my photography. Ease of use and as few annoying factors as possible getting between me and my photography. Now, not sure what I will do in the future. Even older now and Canon lenses are heavy (that was one thing I really liked a LOT better about Pentax, lighter lenses), and I am getting tired of lugging around the weight I am -- which is still a lot less than many others lug around. I'd like one of those lighter cameras. But do I want to give up a mirror and a good viewfinder? So far I have decided I don't. But we shall see how that goes. I don't think I will hold out forever. Probably more than anyone wants to know. But there are various reasons for switching, not just one or two, it's a complex matter. When you find your needs not being met is basically when it happens. Later, Marnie I idenified a lot with what Cotty said. In

Some boring Pictures from the X-Pro1
Nothing to see here, but go look anyway... This was about 2 minutes with the Fuji outside my enabler's store. I found the out of camera images to be a little dark and a little flat, but I had done absolutely nothing to the camera's adjustments either. The top shot was at a middling aperture where I figured the lens should perform more or less at it's best. I think it's a pretty good indication of just how razor sharp the 35/1.4 lens is. The middle picture was shot wide open to check out of focus rendering. I'm very happy with both how sharp the lens is wide open, and how it renders out of focus areas. The bottom picture was to get some sort of idea regarding how the camera handles high ISO (6400 in this case). Note the images were resized to 30%, I did tweak them in Photoshop including a (perhaps heavy handed) USM of 100%, 1 pixel. The sharpening certainly did some odd stuff to the slightly out of focus areas on the second picture. Interestingly, the middle picture almost looks to me like a flash picture, though no flash was used. One of the things I like about the Fuji is that there is no built in flash. Anyway, enjoy, or not as you wish. http://users.accesscomm.ca/wrphoto/fuji/fuji.html Now if winter would only stop hanging on like a turd on a dog's bum, life would be good. bill -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Multiple Brands or Switching - a Trend?
I must have missed the bit where you told about butchering innocent Pentax lenses to fit Canon. I don't see switching brands as a joyful thing. It's just a pain in the nether regions, like getting a baseball bat enema! But I've grown old waiting for Pentax's MZ-D, and I don't think I can afford to wait much longer. From: Steve Cottrell Can only chip in here with some random thoughts from my own personal perspective. I used Pentax film camera gear extensively from 1978 onwards. My first MX in 1980 was my proudest moment in gear - and it extended to my photography as I explored new lenses and techniques. I can truly say that that era for me was my most photographically exciting. A real buzz, and the gear helped a lot. Fast lenses and fast music, plenty going on and as I started into my TV career, the photography was able to boom with me. Much later, and another MX in the bag, and then various MEs and ME- Supers coming and going, and finally an LX! Manual focus all the way baby - it wasn't until after the turn of the century that I owned an autofocus body. But at some point I bought a ridiculously big Apple Quicktake digital camera http://news.cnet.com/i/bto/20090727/Quicktake_OVR.jpg and arsed about with it. Crude, like a child's toy, with awful results - but the fact that one didn't have to buy film - it was amazing. At this point, the only DSLRs available were Sony and Canon/Kodak hybrids at eye-watering prices. Some snappers I knew had them. Purely professional and nowhere near the realms of the hobbyist photog like me. And then, in 2000, Canon brought out the game-changer, the D30. http://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/slrs/canon_eosd30 This was truly amazing - a camera that looked, felt and handled like a film SLR - except you didn't have to spend a fortune on filling it with celluloid. Instead, you coughed up the fortune in the purchase price. I wanted one. Desperately. But I thought I would wait and see what happened with Pentax. And sure enough - this camera was mooted by Pentax: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax_MZ-D http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/bodies/prototypes/MZ-D.html Perfect! The MZ-D was exactly what I wanted. I had lenses that would fit it. (Sure, later it transpired it would have been a dog, but I would have had one in an instant, no questions asked). I was prepared to wait. And wait I did. I waited quite some time. The MZ-D was coming - and coming. And - Then a couple of years after the D30, Canon brought out the D60: http://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/slrs/canon_eosd60 I waited a bit longer. I was beginning to doubt Pentax's ability to actually play the digital game. I had never doubted Pentax before. It was strange - I had grown up with the brand. It was uncomfortable. Sure they had point-n-shoots out, and even things that looked a bit like DSLRs (EI-2000!) but honestly - what the hell were those? Surely you bring out your best hardware first. The MZ-D! The flagship! The ones that the pros would buy, we'd all see them being used, then when the MX- D came out, would all buy them because we could afford them. That's the way it's supposed to go, right? It didn't seem to be going that way. I am sometimes given over to whimsy and so in 2003 I forked out over 2000 GBP for a D60 and kit lens. The following two weeks saw me with a grin that refused to leave my mouth. It was exhilarating. But, I hear you cry, why didn't you go for an *ist D - they came out in 2003?? In truth, the name and target audience of the camera didn't include my idea of what I wanted. I wanted the MZ-D - a professional camera targeted at accomplished photogs - not that I would ever include myself in that group - but that's what I aspired to. My choice. It seemed to me that Pentax had deviated from The Plan! Don't ask me what The Plan is, I can't really describe it. I only know it when I see it, and the *ist D was not it. I reasoned that even if Pentax did bring out the MZ-D or similar, that would be some time away - and Canon had an upgrade path already out there - the 1D series (out in 2001). I could keep on waiting, or I could go now. I thought - hmmm we'll go play with Canon for a while and see what happens with Pentax - might come back, who knows. The D60 introduced me to 'proper' digital photography, and for that I am grateful. It was very 'plastic' and made strange creaking and groaning noises. But it handled well and got me into the game. I sold some K mount lenses and the LX to fund some Canon glass. I kept my old MXs and my best Pentax glass. Just in case. In the ensuing years, I sold the D60 and got a 1D mark II and had a few Canon professional lenses (24-70/2.8L and the 70-200/2.8L IS and 2 or 3 others, plus flash - even a Quantum Turbo battery - fun!) It was great fun and I was well into it for a few years, but then I kinda fell out of love with photography. I was all tooled up but I lacked Clarity of Purpose. So, on another whim, I got an Epson R-D1 and 3 Voigtlander

Some cameras rise above their ergonomics. The Kodak Medalist, is a beast, though not that much bigger and heavier than a K20D, and by modern, (say post 1950), standards quirky to say the least, but what limits my shooting with it is available film. I feel quite fortunate that the Fuji X-Pro1 and the 35/1.4 standard lens fits that description. I can agree with you there, except that I would like a fast wide angle instead of a standard. What I want is fast standard and wide image stabilized lenses, and good low light performance. If we ignore the need for image stabilization, I could get that for $2500 or so with a D800, plus lenses. Physics seems to say that you can't get optical image stabilization in a lens that is faster than f/2.8. Physics also says that it is hard to get sharp, fast lenses in K-mount shorter than ~40mm. So, if I want it fast and wide, I need either full frame, or mirrorless. Full frame would have the advantage of nearly doubling the number of lenses that I effectively have. My 20, 31, 50, 77, 90, 135, 200, 300, 80-200 50-500 would all have 1.5* the field of view that they do on APS, with some loss of sharpness in the corners. Mirrorless means that they would be able to design lenses to a much wider field of view, without going into retrofocus. It also means that the camera would be able to focus a lot better in extremely low light, and I would be able to manually focus in much much lower light. It has the theoretical advantage that you see exactly what the camera will, which is handy if you are shooting in IR. There are no problems with mirror lockup and mirror bounce. You can get a live histogram in the view finder, remote the viewfinder so that it doesn't even need to be attached to the camera. The camera can do a lot more decisions based on what is in the image. I can see how facial recognition focus when photographing musicians would be a lot handier than the microphone recognition that my camera currently has. For my photography, the solution that would work the best for me, would be to have two bodies. A 24x36 mirrorless mount, with an adapter that will work with screw drive AF lenses, and a next generation improvement of the K-5, with better focus and metering. Apart from Angle of View, there seem to be no performance advantages of full frame over APS that aren't solved by two or three years of technological improvements. While there are times when it is nice to isolate a subject with shallow depth of field, I have lost many, many more photos because I missed the focus, and the depth of field was too shallow, than because the depth of field was too deep. If too much is in focus, the picture may not be as nice as it might otherwise be. If the subject is not in focus, the picture is lost. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

What David Mann said. I have my excellent K-5 with the 50-135 and the old Tokina 400mm. The advantages of the X-E1 become irresistable in situations where you’re carrying it around. In practical terms, this means I take the Pentax to the cottage and the Fuji when I’m getting on a plane. When word of the Fuji X100 first broke, I knew I wanted one. Not out of some displeasure with Pentax, but because it's a camera that fits what I like to do. It's old school like that, so I have to make certain I got what I think I got. I won't be getting rid of my DSLR any time soon. There are plenty of jobs that require me to depend on it. More about it and when to expect it can be found at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/wanderlust/travelwide-45-camera These two guys already have their startup money, and some unknown amount of prototypes. What they are going to manufacture is a plastic body that will take specific old lenses found in all those old Speed Graphics, resulting in a 4 x 5 camera that weights less than a Canon Rebel XT or Zeiss Ikon Color Skopar, 630 grams fully loaded with lens, film holder, viewfinder and rangefinder (none of these are included, but are available to fit in the three flash cold shoes on the top) for a base price of $99, pinhole lens included. Still got 4x5 film in your freezer? No? Well, according to this article, development of 4x5 film emulsions still goes on, and is better than ever. Don't want to play with sheet film? Remove the film holder back and rubber band on your old roll film. The body is designed for this too Check it out!! Spoken from the fingers of someone who just dropped over $1500 on a complete Q kit with flash, ring flash, Auto-110 adaptor, and Pentax's super over priced K-mount adaptor. First impressions? Auto-110 lenses, the 70mm and 20-40mm, used with the Soligor 1.7x telextender scatter light more than is useful, sorta like the 85mm soft. The 02, 03, and 06 lenses are very sharp (01 on the way from China) but at full screen on my iMac, and handheld, seem less sharp than my Pentax Z-10. But I have not put it on a tripod yet, or I should say, put a lens on a tripod yet, and shot any reference images. Because I'm an old fart, who can't hold a coin by the edges without going spastic on it, I use several of my junk drawer pieces such as an aluminum 90° bracket once used to flip a small camera (PEN-E size) from horizontal to vertical. I also carry several very well made adjustable camera clamps. The best containing a three inch jaw, chrome plated screw clamp, a 2 screw for tree trunks, two legs hidden in the 'C' clamp that tripod the unit, and a two ball joint head for versatility, and instability. :) Both completely free the camera from my hand, add weight for mass, and unfettered access to the tiny buttons used to take pictures and adjust 40 or 50 various settings, as yet unlearned. Quoting Joseph McAllister pentax...@mac.com: Spoken from the fingers of someone who just dropped over $1500 on a complete Q kit with flash, ring flash, Auto-110 adaptor, and Pentax's super over priced K-mount adaptor. Ah - someone with the official K-Q adapter! PESO - Rennes station, Dag inspired
My flow of PESOs (always fitful) was interrupted by work on our inpatient service and a meeting in Minneapolis (where it snowed all 4 days I was there). So let's go back to France. Someone commented that they would be interested in seeing a version of my Rennes station photo without the retreating jeans-clad figure. So, inspired by our resident minimalist Dag, I offer this exposure, taken just after the one posted: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17113554 The original photo: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17094516 I like the Dag-inspired one better... at the moment. Re: Strange FA50/1,7
Comparing the image to my FA 50 f1.7 - the outer barrel appears to be the same size but the inner barrer in the image is as far out (or further) than mine is at the closest focusing setting. As toher's have commented - probably modified for macro work. I hve used my M 50 f17 for snow crystals as it is every bit as good as the Sigma macro and M 50 f 4 that are my other mainstays. PESO - A Little Midge
Another Q macro - http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php?blog=2 Permalink: http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/a-little-midge The subject is between 3 and 4 mm long. On the Q a 1.25x image (easily done in the field) is close to frame filling. On a full frame camera it would take about 7x lifesized to fill the frame., I regularly shoot snow crystals at that magnification, but that is a stationary setup with controlled lighting. I wonder if it's some kind of add-on device intended to lock the focus in place? Maybe the instructions are for the device itself. From: Mark Roberts Darren Addy wrote: Not aftermarket. It clearly shows in the paperwork accompanying the piece. However, I'm mystified. Is that included paperwork an official Pentax document? No Pentax logo or any other company name/logo. It could be a slip included by some company doing the modification. Typeface looks like Pentax data sheets, but it's a pretty common typeface for Japanese manuals. My guess: This is a 3rd party modification (or perhaps really uncommon Pentax factory mod) for macro. It looks as if the lens has been modified to move the lens elements farther away from the focal plane to achieve close focusing capability. Re: Multiple Brands or Switching - a Trend?
...at this point in the digital era, almost all cameras are highly competent. At the DSLR level, image quality even with the entry models surpasses what most people could have gotten from film SLRs (assuming you understand the camera, what it can actually do, and how to make it perform optimally). As I've written for a number of years now about all DSLRs: if you can't get a good-looking image at the largest size a desktop inkjet printer can create (13x19), it isn't the camera that's the problem. Assuming your DSLR is not broken, it will be your decisions and your handling of the camera that are the gatekeepers on image quality these days. I don't disagree with him. If this is the case why so much talk of switching and other brands? Is it really all due to the lack of a full frame body? Is the increased talk of other brands really a trend or my imagination? Let me chime in, please. IMHO, brand loyalty is a very strange notion. It sound almost as if, you know - loyalty to your favorite club of your favorite sport... I would certainly agree that a big investment in a gear of certain brand will make you loyal to it, but not loyal by means of emotional attachment, so to say. Now, I have never been invested in Pentax as much as some of the folks on the list been. Though I cannot say that I could switch the systems by the flick of my finger. However when the Canon 5D came out and when I handled Sony A850 I realized that I wanted more... Why? Don't know - couldn't tell even now. And so I was a bit preoccupied (using this word as mild form of obsessed) with the full format. In fact, I wanted something from my pictures that I couldn't get from my Pentax gear and that I saw in the pictures published by other people, regardless of gear. Then Galia grew up and we had two photogs in the family and the matter of size and weight became more acute. So it became a racing condition in my processor between FF perceived goodness and the fact that I had to haul two camera bodies, at least two lenses or even more, etc. Eventually I joined a Russian forum of Ricoh GXR shooters. Why? Because the pictures they posted were outstanding in terms of that specific kind of beauty that I was after all this time. Further, they kept claiming that the processing they applied was minimal. Having reviewed several DNG files generously provided by Godfrey I finally bought Ricoh GXR and 50mm macro lens module. Since that moment I've shot with my K-5 less than dozen times, mostly when I had to have flexibility of DSLR and flash capabilities. Now - at this very moment I am in the rangefinder stage of my path. I just don't feel like shooting with DSLR. I infected Galia with the same notion and by now we share two AF modules (28mm and 50mm EFL) and I have Leica-M mount module with Nokton 40/1.4 which is a work of mechanical art. I keep my Pentax system (2 K-5's, several lenses) for the times when I will need DSLR power and also I plan to use 50/1.2, 43 and 77 limited on the M-module via adapter. I don't intend to buy any new Pentax system gear and especially not anything brand new. Current camera bodies are absolutely satisfactory for all my needs and beyond. Most recent developments in Pentax land show that it is highly probable that Pentax and I will part ways. Pentax seems to be searching for itself, so to say, and it is doing so in the markets that have no value for me. I don't think that K-01 or Q are valuable cameras for my personal preferences. For that matter, Ricoh GXR with 2 AF modules is just fine. I do feel loyalty to this club though. But that has nothing to do with brand. It probably had at the start, but not now. That would be my story. I cannot probably say for others.
