Re: OT. SSD query
Maxing out RAM would probably offer the *most* bang-for-the-buck for Photoshop. There's an advantage to having a separate physical drive for Photoshop's scratch disk. Doesn't seem to matter whether it's SSD or traditional spinning platter. http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/2011/05/how-to-tune-photoshop-cs5-for-peak-performance.html http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/2012/10/how-to-tune-photoshop-cs6-for-peak-performance.html Looks like Bill already has a separate drive for his scratch disk. If I needed to speed Photoshop up, I would max out RAM first, add a separate drive of any kind for Photoshop's scratch disk and only after I had done those two items replace the boot drive with a SSD. Prices are falling nicely now, when I got a Samsung 250GB SSD last year it was 130 GBP, now down to about 100: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-250GB-Basic-Solid-State/dp/B00E391OX6/ ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8qid=1399537090sr=8-1keywords=samsung+ssd http://tinyurl.com/lce2ktw My son had one first in his Macbook, then I did mine. Thanks Alan! Based on the conversion rate I just pulled up - R46,000 would be an outrageously high price for this lens. Re: PESO Kat
Now that’s a Kat photo even Mr. Johnson could like. Very nice lighting on her face. The background has issues, but it is what it is. On May 1, 2014, at 3:46 PM, Bruce Walker bruce.wal...@gmail.com wrote: I appreciate your opinion, John. The background is a blessing and curse. It's some kind of large vintage poster or advertising board that is hung directly behind Kat's booth and partially covering a large west-facing window that the afternoon sun was striking full on. So there are little spotlights of light streaming in through numerous holes in it as well as light from around the edges of it. I centered Kat in it to provide backlight but it also created a ton of veiling flare that softened the overall image as well. Some of the light bounced off the inside of the lens hood and created white vignetting around the lower corners. I think the shot was only really possible at all because of the SMC coatings, but I'll have to try one of my uncoated m42 lenses in the same conditions sometime. Re: PESOS: Hands on with the 645Z and some other stuff
I talked to the owners of both local stores around here a couple of years back about why they were no longer carrying Pentax and both of them told me the same thing ... They would stock Pentax if they could get Pentax accept their orders. This was back just about the time Hoya acquired Pentax. It seems to have occurred about the time the K10D came out, because I ordered mine through Southeastern, and they couldn't get one from Pentax, finally resorting to ordering it for me through BH. Ricoh seems to have got the message that to sell Pentax, they've got to have Pentax in the stores where photographers who are not all ready brand loyalists can see it, touch it buy it. There were several known CaNikonistas there showing an interest in the 645Z (where interest == When am I going to be able to actually buy one?). Is the cloud good as the primary place to store image files or only backups? i wouldn't use it as primary; it will be limited to your internet speed for loading images, and if you store your metadata in the files or XMP sidecars, you won't be able to update them directly i would use an external hard drive or home server for primary storage (of what doesn't fit your laptop), and also have another backup under your physical control; i find cloud storage best for secondary backups and for sharing if you really want to backup lots of photos in the cloud, consider your options; just for example (there may be better choices), a free Flickr account gives you 1TB of storage, but limits you to JPEG or PNG; Google+ supports DNG and gives you 15GB free — i suspect both of these have a more photo-oriented interface than SugarSync, including plug-ins to upload directly (i couldn't find such a plug-in for SugarSync) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: PMC OPEN PIT (wrap up)
Alan, there are a few ways to reduce haze in landscape shots, though there are tradeoffs. Eg: if you are using Lightroom the Clarity slider or adjustment brush can work wonders. Nik, Topaz Labs and onOne plugins have even better clarity filters. If you don't have those but are using PSE or The Gimp you can play with the settings in the Unsharp Mask to get a similar effect. If you have Photoshop (and maybe PSE or The Gimp) you can play some games with making a blackwhite clone of your image and setting its mode to overlay. You can selectively apply contrast boosts to various tones that are affected by the haze while leaving others alone. This avoids too much sharpening if that's bothering you. Shift the Opacity slider to control the amount of the contrast effect. Re: XFINITY Connect
Server-side mail filtering has to be a feature offered/supported by the server you are using. The mail server at my office provides it. The one I use for my personal accounts does not.
