Pentax HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED WR Lens - recommended?
Backdrop: Over the last four years, I've reduced the number of lenses I've owned by about 90%. The acquisition of this lens, if recommended, would allow me to sell on three more lenses which cover portions of this range. I would rather have a very small handful of lenses I use frequently, than some that get used twice a year. I'm also aware that my next camera will have a full frame sensor and no doubt, I'll be wanting to buy new lenses for that. So, are folk here who have this lens happy with it? I have the earlier (not WR) version. I have found it very versatile while I was using it. It was definitely better than my earlier lens of simiar range (Sigma 70 - 300mm). OT: screen calibrator for $70 or so?
Are there any decent calibrators for in the $70 dollar range? I think I have my screens pretty well set up - any time I send a print job to CostCo and say no corrections they come back looking like I'd like. Lately, though, I've occasionally hooked up a second monitor to my laptop and the appearance is WAY OFF. I'd love to be able to get those sorted and so far no manipulation of the controls either on the laptop or the panel itself has yielded acceptable results. It would be nice to have a profile do the work for me - but since I so rarely plug in the big monitor, I don't want to drop a lot of money for it would be nice! Platform: MacBook Pro, so OSX compatibility is a must. Also: I've read of some stuff that only works on one computer. I've got two Macs at home so it would be nice to run this on each of 'em. Re: OT: screen calibrator for $70 or so?
Charles, keep your eyes peeled for a holiday deal at Adorama or BH Photo (or similar). You'll likely see one of the Express models dip to $70 with mail in rebate or something. Any of these will do the job: Spyder, Munki, i1, etc. There's generally no issue with running the calibration on more than one machine; the restriction on express versions is usually that they can't handle multiple monitors on a single computer. For many years, I've been using a lumiquest softbox on my speedlights: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=sku=576949gclid=Cj0KEQiAwuSkBRC7qKq8rr7796sBEiQA5VnSuDiYh-XV673WwsE1CVE25HfatfwWxl7T5INvNLYjk2kaAprh8P8HAQQ=is=REGA=details I find it invaluable when I'm working with a speedlight. What I would love would be a grid that I can put over it, so that not only can I get controlled spread and softening, but so that I could direct the light a bit better. I've got grids for my speedlights, but I have not seen a gridded softbox of a size that could be carried in a camera bag. Re: gridded speedlight softbox?
Such a grid, were it to exist, would almost certainly cost at least 2-3 times what that little softbox costs. Not much of a market for that. Not that it's a bad idea; it'd be kinda like a really small beauty dish that produces an area of light larger than a bare gridded speedlight. I usually slap a Honl grid on a speedlight to get a small circle of light. Should be pretty close to a grid on the Lumiquest if you position it further away. I've used that to brighten a face when in shadow. I missed the original posting, but I think this is a beautiful image. I'm not so sure about your species identification, but I can't tell you what else it might be either. Re: gridded speedlight softbox?

What I would love would be a grid that I can put over it, so that not only can I get controlled spread and softening, but so that I could direct the light a bit better. I've got grids for my speedlights, but I have not seen a gridded softbox of a size that could be carried in a camera bag. Is there some physics reason that these don't exist, such as the light source isn't big enough for it to make a difference versus a smaller grid? Re: OT: screen calibrator for $70 or so?
And if you look at the earlier OT: X-Rite ColorMunki Display on sale thread, Zos mentioned an open source color management program called Argyle that supports Windoze Mac supports a whole lot of older hardware, and according to the online docs it works with OS X 10.3 through 10.7 and may work with 10.8. http://www.argyllcms.com/ On 12/23/2014 9:26 PM, Paul wrote: If you're interested, I have a Spyder 3 Pro you can have for $35.00. -p On 12/23/2014 5:19 PM, Charles Robinson wrote: Are there any decent calibrators for in the $70 dollar range? Re: PESO: Melbourne Skyline From St Kilda
Quoting Darren Addy pixelsmi...@gmail.com: I miss Melbourne so much. This ol' country boy isn't normally much for cities, but that is one in which I could quite happily live out my days. Just curious, Darren. Are you talking about Melbourne, Australia (the subject of Dave's photo) or Melbourne, Florida? If the former, when were you downunder? RE: Pentax HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED WR Lens - recommended?
Ralf R Radermacher wrote: I most certainly am, so far. Haven't been able to do any serious shoot-out with my other lenses because of the darned wind that's still strong enough to rattle even my sturdy Berlebach wooden tripod. I'm seriously fed up with this weather. Then again, that's my prob and I could have spent the holidays on the Canarys if I had wanted eternal sunshine. Trouble is I find eternal sunshine so eternally boring. :-) The forecasts say the wind will take a break after Xmas, so stay tuned. I'll have one of these lenses in my hand within the next two weeks, and I'll now be able to sell on three more. Thanks for the replies. As for the wind, I'm hoping that the modifications I made to the fence panels after the storm last year hold! All I can hear is them rattling away at night and I can't imagine using a tripod in these gusts at all.
