The EVF on the X-T1 is larger and has a faster refresh rate than that of the X-E2, but I own the X-E2 and think it has a very nice EVF, so it's not like you'd be slumming. As far as external controls go, the X-E2 lacks an ISO wheel, and Drive and Meter Mode levers. It also has fewer customisable buttons, but that could change with a firmware upgrade, which Fuji seem fond of. Lastly, the X-E2 is $300 cheaper than the X-T1. I'm interested in the X-T1 because it's going to handle larger lenses better and, most importantly, because it has a flip-screen, which the X-E2 doesn't. Button and dial placement on both is outstanding, shape and grip size just naturally falls to hand with the dials easily accessible. And the E-M1 is so configurable, with 9 or 10 of the buttons, levers, and dials customizable, it's pretty much able to be configured for nearly anyone's preferences. It's a very nice body, similar to OM-D E-M1. I don't mind EVF, the latest iterations are quite good. Magnification could be better though. The Olympus looks really good, but I'd be leaning towards the SONY a7, despite it's now documented shortcomings, with an adapter it would make my full frame K and M lenses their proper focal lengths again. I really don't like the fly by wire focusing that seems to be the new normal for most of the new EVIL camera systems, but then again I prefer a manual transmission in my car too. Re: OT - Re: Yo Cotty, check the new Fuji out!
Looks like a nicely designed body, similar aesthetic to the Nikon Df with many discrete dials, buttons and knobs. I hope it has an up to date EVF (on par with the Sony A7/A7r or Olympus E-M1) and feels good in the hand. I know Fuji's lenses are generally quite good; they're building up a decent lens line now. But: I'm not crazy about the position of the EV compensation dial (the A7 has it in the same place and I find it awkward, found it awkward on the two Fujis I had that had the same too; I've remapped A7's direct EV compensation to the front finger dial for my use). I remain less than thrilled with what I see with Fuji's unusual sensor when it comes to raw file processing. However, that situation has improved somewhat with the most recent revisions of Lightroom and Capture 1. The negative conjectures are my personal predilection … not a reflection on the camera really. ;-) Exciting times in camera equipment land! Re: Yo Cotty, check the new Fuji out!
Kind of looks like someone took parts of Sony's new FF mirrorless, and the Olympus OM-D, (doesn't matter which one really), and built a new camera out of the parts around an APS-C sensor. From the front it looks a lot like a nice compact film SLR from the late 80's before AutoFocus took completely over. The specifications look good I guess, but I'm finding it hard to get excited about gear that requires me to change entire systems. Yes kids, we have a winner. Using my X-Pro1 with the viewfinder lit up has incredibly short battery life. The X-T1 will have an accessory battery grip, which adds to the size and weight, and probably still won't take it up to a K5IIs for number of pictures. While they have a small but vocal fan(boy) base, they aren't really being embraced by the public. bill Bill, I take so few shots that I've never run the X-E2 dry in less than a few days, but I can see how others might have issues with short battery life. The X-T1, if I read correctly, offers a common sense EVF mode whereby it only turns on when you put your eye to it (and the rear LCD is off all the time). Why it's taken them 4 or so years to implement this instead of the EVF on all the time mode they had is beyond me. When I'm street shooting I actually carry the camera turned off in my hand, then turn it on when I see a shot worth taking. As far as mirrorless sales go, from memory I will quote that in Asia and Europe DSLRs represent about 1/3 of camera sales, and mirrorless another 1/3. In the US, however, DSLRs are around 40% and mirrorless 15% (I'm on my phone and can't check actual values, so I might be off with the numbers, but the trend should be correct). The US is a huge market, but let's remember these camera makes are Asian, and if it sells there, they will keep making it. I was anti EVF until I spent a month shooting with the Panny G3 for a review. Then I went back to the K10D and wondered where the histogram and all the other info in the OVF had gone to. And why was it all off a sudden so hard to manually focus in low light??? Why was the OVF so dark??? Haven't looked back since. That's not to say I don't get the romanticism and directness of the OVF (I do love looking through my LX's viewfinder), it's just that a *good* EVF offers me more benefits. Ideally we'd have DSLR OVFs with lots of projected info, just like the Fuji X-Pro 1, but nobody seems to be in a hurry to develop that. Re: OT - Re: Yo Cotty, check the new Fuji out!
We haven't seen a lot of cost reduction so far from using EVFs. Take for example two roughly equivalent cameras an EVF Olympus OM-D EM-1 at 16mp and the K-5II. The cameras spec sheets are very similar, weather sealed, Magnesium alloy bodies, With really about equal IQ, both have weather sealing available battery grips, The Oly has arguably one of the best EVFs on a m43 camera, the Pentax one of the best OVFs on an APS-C DSLR. MSRP at introduction for each was within $100.00 of other. Now admittedly when you look at FF cameras, the Sony A7 twins sell for considerably less than the Nikon D800 and D610 but based on some of the reviews I've read, I think that Sony may have cut some corners in the imaging train to achieve those numbers, but where you can see roughly equivalent cameras one with an EVF and one with an OVF that have roughly the same build quality and image quality, they seem to sell for roughly the same price, and I expect they have roughly the same profit margin per unit. There are distinct advantages to both types of viewfinders, which I don't think I have to go into, you can prefer the advantages of either or use both or hate both and use Leica, if you can afford it. No matter what the advantages or disadvantages of EVFs may be, they will not replace OVFs until the manufacturing complexity and cost of a good EVF is significantly lower than a good Pentaprism OVF and based on pricing, which is the only real data I have, I think that using an EVF just replaces one source of cost and type of manufacturing complexity with another. The thought that EVFs have to be better, or even equal to OVFs as a user experience, to replace them isn't really an issue. I don't like EVFs all that much, but I've looked through the OM-D EM-1 viewfinder, as far as viewfinder quality is concerned, that EVF is good enough now, for most applications. As I said I don't like 'em, but if EVFs offered a big enough manufacturing advantage Pentaprism viewfinders would be gone tomorrow. Re: Yo Cotty, check the new Fuji out!
Since the Fuji cameras were designed from the beginning with an APS-C sensor and a whole new lens mount so there is no existing base of lenses designed with a big enough image circle to cover a 24x36mm sensor, Demanding a FF solution is worse than silly. It would be like demanding that Olympus and Panasonic develop full frame 4:3 cameras. Those cameras are already full frame. Re: OT - Re: Yo Cotty, check the new Fuji out!
I don't believe in the notion that EVFs are primarily intended to be cost reduction. At the present time, they represent the second most expensive single component in these cameras, the primary imager sensor itself being the first most expensive. Inexpensive pentaprism viewfinder technology is very very mature and not particularly expensive. Pro-grade pentaprism viewfinder cameras do carry a hefty bit of premium based on the cost of the reflex viewfinder. In this regard, the Olympus E-M1 is very interesting… It replaces the E-5 model, shrinks the whole package in size/weight by about 30%, same build quality, has an improved sensor, better responsiveness, and the viewfinder is (to my eyes at least) substantially improved. And it does cost $400 less MSRP than the E-5 did on introduction … The real key is that EVFs are superior to reflex finders for formats that are smaller than 35mm FF. There are too many losses in illumination and viewfinder quality stemming from the reduction in focusing screen area. The Pentax K5/K3 have one of the best reflex viewfinders in the APS-C space, and how many times do people here wish for something bigger/brighter/etc to match their old 35mm film SLR? Simple physics precludes it … the illuminating source in an APS-C 100% coverage reflex viewfinder is only 45% the area of the 35mm format camera, so you're losing a little more than half the area, and thus half the light transmission.
