Marnie,
along with the other suggestions you've had, you might also want to
consider a Thermarest. They pack up very small, and are much lighter
and more comfortable than a picnic blanket. Mine weighs

Available from camping shops.

Thanks to all who gave me ideas on a ground cover.
I went to REI and found a picnic blanket with straps. Basically, it is
waterproofed on one side, and has sort of blanket on the other. Not a real
blanket, so it is not that thick. Not quite what I want, but it will do. Since

Sounds like a situation where a smallish size lined picnic blanket might
come

I'm not sure it would suit your purposes, Marnie, but it might fit
someone else's around here.
How about checking with a moving company to see if they have a smallish
mover's blanket they will well to you. They're nicely padded.

Check out space blankets which can be found at places like REI. I've
used 'em when camping. What's especially nice about them is that they're
very light and can be folded into a very small package, They're waterproof
too. Plus, they have a reflective side or coating which can be used to

Sounds like a good idea. I wonder if something with a bit of padding
(very light weight sleeping bag) might not be available with a carry
rigging of some sort. While lying down would give you a fairly stable
camera holding position, I'd probably, also, try including my bean
bag rest.

I would suggest a Space Blanket not the silver mylar film kind which
is almost impossible to refold, but the heavier type with one side
colored. It weighs only ounces and is rather tough, you could probably
fit it in your camera bag. It will also keep you dry when the ground is
wet. Google MPI

However, what you asked about is called a picnic blanket, I think. I
see them at Wal-Mart every now and again. Looks like a small nylon
