Re: November PUG is up

2023-11-09 Thread Stanley Halpin
Thanks again Brian!

Several this month intrigued me. Ralf’s well seen signage, Henk’s fritillary
courtship, Brian’s beautiful scene of a typical freighter…

John’s nice shot of his re-purposed shipping container got me wondering about
our local zoning restrictions and if/how I could sneak such a container into
the vacant lot across the street. But PT’s Banana Boat really got me going! It
was so reminiscent of scenes we saw on the upper Amazon in 2018 that I
immediately began kicking myself for not having thought of something like that
for my own submission.

So I went into my archives for that period, found that I did NOT get a picture
of the canoes loaded with food or goods to/from the market. Several nice shots
of one or two guys motoring along in their transport canoes, but nothing that
would have fit the theme. Chagrin that I did not think of looking earlier,
relief that I did not miss a potential submission.

Meanwhile as I was typing this, my computer screensaver did its every-2
minute-image swap and I was presented with an image that would have been nice
for next month. I’ve already submitted for December, and will put this
second-thought image out as a PESO next month.

Thanks Bob. Agree about the barbarism although there was a rumor that it might
have been disassembled for later reconstruction. I doubt it, though. I took
many photos of the building over the years trying to get the 'perfect' shot. I
never quite achieved that but this one came closest.

Thanks again, Brian, for keeping the PUG a vital part of our little group!

The November PUG is smaller than usual in number of entrants, but it
presents 11 different and interesting interpretations of the "Close to
Home" theme.

My favorite of the month is Paul's "Great Lakes View." The geometry is
pleasing and effective, and the view through the windows magnetic. The
silhouetted figures, however, make the image really special.

My problems are:
a) I'm not shooting much lately, and
b) When I do it's with my Olympuses (is that the correct plural?) :-)

It's not a Pentax, so who cares what the correct plural is? 8^)

Re: November PUG is Up

2021-11-04 Thread ann sanfedele
I'm not shooting anything new either __ I can't hold a camera to my eye
without some pain for more than a few seconds.. I'm just going through
old files to digitize film stuff and design my calendars because "I HAVE
TO" :-)  Posting on Facebook when it strikes my fancy and because of
many friends there who are not photos who do want to see my snaps of any
age...

My K-5 is affixed to my tri pod for ebay product shooting.. the coolpix
is lighter than the K-5 but still to heavy to carry with me outside...
and I have little interest in my neighborhood, to tell the truth, from a
photo point of view..  I long for slickrock and ghost towns and
woodlands so go back to my files

for those...

my balance is off too.. although cortisone saved my knees  at least for
a while- I stumble about clumsily .. have to concentrate on walking, can't

browse for interesting things to shoot.

I do love hunting for things to add to the pug and I enjoy especially
the wonderful work of many of you who live in places that are beautiful.
New York is a hell hole these days.. except that I have very cheap rent
and easy access to food and clothing that I can afford  and visits
occasionally with younger friends who can come visit.  at leas people
are more sensible than not about masks and vaxes

Ralf, I am sorry to hear about the circumstances that have held you close to
home and blocked you from creating new images. But I am glad you took the time
to dig into old material for your contribution to this month’s gallery; your
Architects’ Parsley is my personal favorite from this month. There are many
well done flower pictures here, some quite stunning, and a few other nice
variations on the theme - cacti, pines, etc. But your image stands out.

I'd love to but I don't have anything to post.

Due to the pandemic, we never get anywhere. I'm 67 and the model of a
modern high-risk patient. We used to go to Belgium on Fridays to do our
shopping for the week and some tourism during the rest of the day.
Haven't gone there for over a year. The petrol in the car is from the
last visit and the tank is still half full.

The same for our holidays in Dunkirk, France. Earlier this year, our
landlord there fell from the roof, spending weeks in a coma, months in
hospital and is still in rehab, then our old friend who'd normally take
care of our cats while we're away suffered a succession of strokes, and
with the incidence numbers being what they are, in the North of France,
we wouldn't have dared anyway.

My raw file directory for 2019 holds 721 files, that from 2020 a
whopping 17 and this year zero, ada, zilch...

The stuff I'm showing in the PUG is all years old and has been dug out
after long hours of searching for something that's godd enough, hasn't
been shown yet and has been taken with a Pentax camera or lens.

Sorry to have no better news for the time being.

My excuse is that I have still not completely recovered from a catastrophic

somehow corrupted my main backup. I’ve done some recent shooting, though, and
will start posting some of the results soon.

Quite frankly no idea. This isn't a real railway. The rails were used by
the local fishermen to move their boats across the beach. Everything is
a lot smaller than it looks and I gather they have the same gauge as the
neighbouring Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, i.e. 15 inch.

They look as if they haven't been used for a long time and, much like
the huts in the background, have been left there to contribute to the
picturesque impression of the whole place.

Dungeness is indeed a very peculiar place, with it's half-desert-like
nature, simple fisher huts and this enormous eyesore of a nuclear power
station.

Here's a photo I've taken on another visit there:

I found this article yesterday about the railway tracks:

Now, that's interesting. Seeing those heavy winches I had rather thought
they used the rails to move their boats. There's quite a few of these
rails.

There is some kind of carriage about half way down, in my photo.

Thanks Brian, for making PUG possible.
Thanks also for including my photo.
My line of thought was exactly like yours.
I have Pentax cameras from 6x7 to 110 (seven, I guess).
And I have far too many lenses for each...
Unfortunately, they see little use these days...

...

Anyway, I enjoyed the gallery much and
my favorite "straight lines" are in
Mark Roberts' Walk and
Bruce Walker's Geometry 1.

There is a lot to like in this gallery.

Henk's "Straight Ahead" is the winner for me, both in terms of embracing
the monthly theme and in overall appeal. The strong perspective really
grabs my eye and draws me in.

I am also very fond of Rick's "St Louis Steps." Again, it really captures
the theme and the minimalism of the composition is pleasing and compelling.

"Layers...," by Paul Sorenson also strongly demonstrates the theme with
interesting geometry and textures. It shows a great eye and wonderful
execution.

All of the others have interest and appeal, and Bruce Walker's "Geometry
1" got a rise out of me.

Congratulations to all submitters. Let's get an even larger gallery for
next month!

A very pleasing gallery this month, overall.

I must find my "Pentax" (not Ricoh) camera for the next month.

My favorites:

Power Curve by Don Guthrie,

Modern Staircase, by Mark Roberts

Deja Vu All Over Again, by Ann Sanfedele

And this quote from that lovely movie was a bonus:
"Not much meat on her, but what's there is cherce"

Mark!’s is nicely enhanced by the woman’s motion blur.

Annsan posted one of her all-time great shots.

Henk’s not only has curves, but those reptilian eyes in the wood are

Jan, why do spike heels look so much better as free-standing art than as

Ken’s is a GFM classic, but the lighting and moisture on the pavement

Bruce N. will have to correct me if I'm wrong, but I suspect that:

the white patch is snow

The light-green foliage is a fern, most likely a polypodium species.
Which one depends on where the image is taken.

The foreground is a moss, the brown part its roots. I can't make
qualified guesses about species.

Another excellent gallery!

Bruce W’s is very clever—gave me a chuckle.

Dave’s and Don’s are very nicely composed and DOF is used beautifully.
Ditto Paul Sorenson’s.

Jan’s “Meandering” is my favorite. Goodness knows how many times I’ve
sliced up red cabbage; but it never occurred to me that a photo lurked

Nice to see an NZ drop in your photo, Brian. There's a half-marathon that runs

Re: November PUG is up

2018-11-05 Thread Rick Womer
Another excellent gallery!

Bruce W’s is very clever—gave me a chuckle.

Dave’s and Don’s are very nicely composed and DOF is used beautifully. Ditto
Paul Sorenson’s.

Jan’s “Meandering” is my favorite. Goodness knows how many times I’ve sliced up
red cabbage; but it never occurred to me that a photo lurked there.

Ken’s shot of the lichens is lovely. At the bottom it looks as though they’re
floating above the rock.

Not a dud in the whole bunch.

I have no problem with Bruce Walker's image. It would be nice if I could

It is Bruce Nagel's image that I can't make head or tails of.

Re: November PUG is up

2018-11-05 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I think it is a very interesting gallery, with a lot of excellent work.

My favorite is "Meandering," by Jan van Wijk. The colors, the textures,
the patterns and the composition are all stunning.

A close second for me is "Monument to a Dead Webbrowser," by Filip
Nicolai. I( find it an interesting and innovative landscape of an
attractive subject.

Ann's is similar to another image I was considering for submission, which
was a macro of the stitching in a flag.

I am totally baffled by Bruce Nagel's "Attachment." What am I looking at
in that image. 'Tis a Puzzlement to me.

Thanks to all for an enjoyable gallery!

As to Dan's, our minds think alike. I had a photo in mind in that genre as

WOW! We certainly DO think alike. Your "Painted Lady" is not really much
like my PUG entry, but it is VERY similar to a shot I call "Tatooed Lady"
from a few years back:

My that is a look alike! I like the gesture of the hand in mine but i LOVE the
hat in your shot. I'm guessing we might some other pairs in our collections.
Must be a Pentax thing with tongue in cheek he says. Fun, thanks Dan.

2013/11/3 Brian Walters apathy...@lyons-ryan.org:

G'day all

Another fine gallery and one of the largest this year.

I like them all but Ken's 'Taos' is my favourite. I like its
simplicity and
the combination of curves and straight lines - also, it brings back
pleasant
memories (I was there not long ago...)

As usual, you'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous Gallery
there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's
not

infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the
gallery, let me know.

+

Coming up for December is 'Chaos' - should be a piece of cake!

Submit here:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

Submission Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

The main requirements are:
* Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels
* Max file size: 300k
* Third party equipment is acceptable provided either the camera
body or
lens used is Pentax.
* If you embed a colour space in the image, it should be sRGB to
ensure that
the image is displayed correctly on line.
* Nominal closing date: 30 September.

Agree, as usual on the PUG :)

I like Dutch Architecture, with a nice Dutch field of flowers in the
foreground. The colors work very well together.

Thanks Attila, appreciate the kind words!

Sacred and Profane is a very strong juxtaposition of old and new,
both buildings are nice and I like the angel of view.

Milwaukee Art Museum is an amazing building, very well captured. I'd
love to see more shots of this.
