And as for ordinary people who already are left behind by Google when something goes wrong? They'll get the shaft again. Google has ALWAYS operated on this basis -- if you don't fit into their majority silos, they just don't care. Another way for Google users to get locked out of their accounts and lose all their data, with no useful help from Google. With Google's deficient passkey system implementation -- they refuse to consider an additional authentication layer for protection -- anyone who has authenticated access to your device (that includes the creep that watched you access your phone in that bar before he stole it) will have full and unrestricted access to your Google passkeys and accounts on the same basis. And when you're locked out, don't complain to Google, because they'll just say that you're not the user they're interested in. The Twitter deal is a very dark day for Google Let's be clear about this. Not removing most hate speech and disinformation/misinformation are key aspects of Musk's #Twitter/X and his publicly stated philosophies, which also include his direct friendly public interactions with racists and fascists on the platform. Twitter is the main large platform that has refused to agree to the EU code of conduct and has now been told by the EU that it will be in violation of EU laws regarding these content types, unless changes are made. Understandably, many firms are reluctant to advertise on Twitter for fear of brand contamination through general or specific association with disreputable Twitter content. By making it possible for #Google Ad users to buy ads on Twitter by linking the Google and Twitter ad systems, Google is now explicitly aligning itself with Musk's philosophies and sensibilities, by providing new sources of income via Google systems to increase ad buys on Twitter, and so help continue to fund Musk's hate speech and disinformation operations. The damage to Google's reputation -- whatever is left of it at this point -- could be enormous, especially when Google Ad users find their ads associated with the more horrific of Twitter posts. More on Google/Twitter Deal Basically, Google partnering with Musk's Twitter/X to provide ad sales is analogous to signing a deal to provide new services to a criminal organization that you find distasteful, but hey, they're willing to pay you so you're happy to help keep them afloat. That's the sorry reality, no matter how Google tries to spin it. What could be a better trigger of traffic accidents than sending unexpected text messages (in some cases apparently with unusual alert tones) to drivers who then fumble around for their phones to find out what the hell is going on! Of course, many people have learned to ignore all notifications from their phones due to the endless stream of ads and phishing attacks, and inappropriate overuse of "emergency" notifications by local authorities. OpenAI announced this support for future versions of ChatGPT back in August, and now Google has done the same for future versions of some of their AI products: https://www.engadget.com/google-will-let-publishers-hide-their-content-from-its-insatiable-ai-202015557.html There are some details about this that I do not fully understand at this time. In particular, the note that robots.txt cannot be used to control how Google Search accesses information from sites for its "Search Generative Experience" -- SGE. The implication is that the only way to block use of data by SGE is by telling Google not to index the data for Search at all -- even in its traditional "non-Generative AI" form. As you may know, I frequently note that at the Linux, etc. command line level, we still mostly use the same UNIX-derived commands and tools that date back to UNIX Version 6 and earlier of many decades ago. It is frequently argued that this is because Ken, Dennis, and the rest of the Bell Labs gang got these right in the first place. Passkey hype and dangers (e.g., Google) And I'm going to say this again: Poorly implemented passkey systems -- such as that currently in place by Google -- are security disasters that will most affect persons already most at risk. Google's implementation for example uses the device authentication as its passkey authentication, and when users with (as is so common) weak device authentication use passkeys, those passkeys are all at risk. Google says on balance this is fine. Google has a long, long history of treating significant segments of their user population (especially nontechies, older users, etc.) with barely veiled disdain, and this is making it worse. In the 2005 film "V for Vendetta" a fictional UK government has turned into a tightly censored, tracked, and controlled hellscape, with technology used to control citizens in every way possible. The UK has now taken a massive step toward making that horror a reality, with the passage of likely the most misguided legislation in the country since the Norman invasion of 1066. I won't detail their Online Safety Bill here -- you can find endless references by searching yourself -- but the vast, blurry, nebulous, misguided rules for "protecting children from 'harmful' content" -- a slippery slope bad enough on its own, quickly expanded into a Chinese Internet style virtual steel collar for every UK resident, chained to the government in every aspect of their online lives. The mandated social media platform ID age verification requirements, which will ultimately require the showing of government IDs for access to sites, alone will create the opportunity for virtually every action of every user of the Internet in the UK to be tracked by the government and its minions in ever expanding ways over time. Be careful what sites you visit or what you ask or say on them. In China, you can simply vanish under such circumstances. And in the UK? Similar disappearances coming soon, perhaps, as every site you visit, no matter the topic related to business, medical concerns, or other aspects of your family's private and personal life, will ultimately be linked to you in government databases. VERY similar *bipartisan* legislative efforts are taking place here in the U.S., though the U.S. court system is creating additional hurdles for their perpetrators here, at least for the moment. For now. While some activists and legislators spend their time ranting about Internet advertising, governments around the world are working to turn the Internet into a pervasive tool for tracking your every online move and thought, permanently linked to your government IDs. We've seen it in Communist China. Now we see it in so-called democracies. How to disable the annoying and useless Chrome new "All bookmarks" feature I've been informed that the annoying, useless new "All bookmarks" entry on the bookmarks toolbar for Chrome (which may or may not have hit your browser yet), can be disabled by going to chrome://flags and disabling "Power bookmarks side panel". Google Bard AI now wants access to your personal information -- just say NO! The article noted below describes new features brought to Google Bard that involve giving permission for Bard AI to access your personal information (e.g. Gmail, etc.) and explains how the "G" button uses Search to compare Bard answers with other results on the Web. While this personal information feature is theoretically opt-in, the user interface leading to Bard options is multilayered and confusing, and the personal info option is mixed in with other options that are actually opt-out. While buried down in the Bard privacy policy it claims that your personal information from the opt-in won't be shown to other humans (unlike many other inputs to Bard) and won't be used for overall Bard training, I strongly recommend leaving the personal information option OFF. The answers coming from Bard continue to frequently range between useless and dangerous. They can also frequently vary enormously from run to run for the same query (e.g. "Is Trump a criminal?), though this behavior can be difficult to reproduce over short periods of time. (The "view other drafts" feature gives some clues to this.) The "G" button for comparing answers against Search will be ignored by the vast majority of users. Most users will simply accept the response given and never check further, no matter how inaccurate that response actually is. Some answers are showing links to sources, which is good, but they are now footnotes rather than inline in answers, so even less likely to be clicked. So sites are still being sucked dry of data for Google's AI, with little or nothing being given in return by Google. Again, I strongly urge NOT giving Bard permission to access your personal Google data, and please use great care when navigating the "Bard Extensions" where this and other options reside in the confusing user interface. More on the Google Authenticator problem -- and the "Google Pattern" (and Passkeys) A few more words about the Authenticator vulnerability under discussion. Back in April when I first discussed this, I noted that the concept of backing up to the cloud was in theory a good one, but that Google's current implementation (which is enabled by default) posed risks. I said that the risk was likely quite small for most people, but I still recommended everyone disable this feature in its current form, for exactly the kinds of reasons noted earlier today when a firm was heavily hacked via cloud synced Authenticator. Google has a pattern in security of saying in essence "well, this is good for most users, so too bad if it hurts a fraction of them!" It also tends to enable new features that may present risks to some users without adequately explaining those features and asking for affirmative permission to enable them. Those fractions represent genuine human beings and at Google scale almost certainly a lot of human beings in absolute numbers --- who can suffer significantly when their accounts are subverted, and who rarely can get effective help from Google in such circumstances. I'll add that I have similar concerns regarding Google's current "passkeys" implementation, but since I've written them up a number of times before, I won't repeat them here and now.
