Re: [Phono-L] Edison Standard A versus B Model

2012-03-04 Thread clockworkhome

Greetings Bill:

I believe you have a B motor in an A cabinet. It is essentially the same motor
so it can be swapped between the two models. The difference was the threaded
crank on the B and the B had a short knurled screw for the speed knob. The
threaded hole for the speed control is identical to both. The rubber grommets
of the A and springs of the B both fit the mounting holes on the motor frame.
When ICS B Standards were made they simply put a hole in the bedplate for the
longer speed control shaft of the Standard A. The Standard B made for ICS was
the only ones that should have the hole and above the bedplate speed knob.

Edison went to the Standard B Model around serial 245000. If your machine were
just before that I might suggest that it was factory installed but at 178813
that is way too early for a threaded crank. It very much sounds like a kitchen
table conglomerate which Edison machines are prone to. I always ask for the
motor number when Triumphs are on eBay. Often I find a nice Model A Triumph
with a much later motor *and* with a screw on crank, not the square drive. For
many years it was easier for slap dash repairmen to simply swap out motors
rather than repair the broken spring, another example of interchangeable parts
on Edison machines being a positive and a negative together. In most every
case the machine is advertised as 'unmolested' or some other term to indicate
it is all original. With Edison you have to sometimes give a closer look to be
sure.

Regards,

Al

Sounds like a marriage of an A case and B motor except for the speed control.
Maybe the winding shaft was replaced?? I'd like to see pics!

[Phono-L] Edison Standard A versus B Model

2012-03-03 Thread clockworkhome

When George and I did the 1976 Edison cylinder phonograph book the printer
missed some text. I don't think it appeared when George did the expanded
Companion book.

The Model A Standard used a pin crank engagement. The motor was held *up
against* the bedplate with screws through rubber grommets to lessen vibration
transmission. The speed control was up through the bedplate on top. The
cabinet is shorter than the later B. All Model A Standards in the 'new style
cabinet of 1901' have a banner transfer.

The Model B Standard used a threaded engagement. The motor was *suspended on
springs* from the bedplate. Since the motor was lower, the cabinet had to be
increased in height for motor clearance from the cabinet floor. This brought
about the 'tall Standard' Model B cabinet style. The speed control was made
into a simple screw that did not extend about the bedplate. The Model B
Standard only had the banner transfer for short time as the single word Edison
replaced it in the summer of '06.

The ICS Standard machines had the speed control knob on top of the bedplate all
the way through the rest of the Standard line. They did this to allow for
adjustment to the 90 RPM record speed.

In 1975 I received what I thought was the galley copy of the book from George
and immediately began editing. I called George a few days later with my
erratum and he told me that was the final copy not a galley proof. As a
result, there is one photograph of an Edison machine missing from that book and
the idiot typesetter and page format person responsible for the Standard
chapter never caught the mistake. The most common Edison cylinder machine
made, the Standard Model B, appears nowhere in the book as a picture. And, now
you know the rest of the story.

Regards to all,

Al

PS: Variations from the above machine descriptions are likely kitchen table
conglomerates, one of the confusing factors for Edison having so many
interchangeable parts floating around through the last 110 years. eBay this
last month had a Model B Home in a later D style cabinet, a Standard B in an A
cabinet with the motor screwed down so it would fit, and a few other peculiar
mutts, all listed as untouched originals. How sad we cannot contact the buyers
any longer to send them a warning missive.

I need a replacement for a broken motorboard frame, for an Edison Standard.
This is the wood frame to which the metal bedplate mounts, which hinges upward

That is a repeating device which was supplied on International Correspondence
Schools language machines. You would push down on the right side and it would
lift and move the carriage back to repeat a phrase or word. It is different in
design than your device.

[Phono-L] Edison Standard Model G

2011-01-27 Thread ClockworkHome

Toward the end of the Standards Edison was very lax in model letter
labeling. The Standard Model E that was often shipped with a Diamond B and No.
10
Cygnet horn was no different from the Model G Standard. Both had identical
configurations and were locked into 4 minute only mode with no 2 minute
gears. The very last out the door before outside horn machine production ended
had either a G at the end of the serial or if a separate box on the patent
plate for model had a G there. In one case the machine had a Gem patent
plate with a Standard serial number with a G on the end. I would hazard a
guess
that less than 100 Standards were actually labeled G and the serials on all
that I have seen, only 4 in 45 years of collecting, are at the very highest
numbers.

If you have a Model E Standard with Diamond B Reproducer and Cygnet Horn
then you don't need to look for a G unless you are a real fanatic (like me).
The photo in the book is my G...

Confusion also is found with the ICS Standards in the last years. You will
find them with the D X'd out, E X'd out, and F X'd out and a C stamped next
to the old letter. At the factory they apparently just grabbed serial
number plates and put them onto the 2 minute "C" Standards. Sometimes they
didn't take off the old letter.

Configurations of the D, E, F, and G were often "fuzzy." It is not
uncommon to find one letter X'd out like an F then and E to the right. Serials
were intermixed so delineation is not clear from them either. Why the very
last Standards were finally stamped with a G after so much confusion is not
known at this time.

Best wishes to all,

Al

[Phono-L] Edison Standard A

2010-04-08 Thread Steven Medved

The A standard has the black painted crank, the B has the nickel plated
crank, that is the easiest way to tell them apart.

The ICS B has the governor control knob and the early B has the banner
case.

So when in doubt look at the crank. It only took me 28 years to figure this
out.

Re: [Phono-L] Edison Standard E 2 minute conversion... another thought...

2009-12-23 Thread Steven Medved

Hello Al,

Was the carriage reducer or adapter was made for the recorder?

I have found on my Triumph with the large carriage that some CHK reproducers
sit too low. I corrected this by placing a 0.020 wire in the reducer/adapter
under where the C will sit.

Having all the carriages for the standard being interchangeable is wonderful,
it allows my Standard A to test out any reproducer from the standard speaker to
the diamond B. So far the only standard carriages I need to complete the set
is the one for the E and F. The one I have for the ICS has the shaver casting
that was not drilled out.

I saw one of the early Amberolas (the one with the fireside motor) on eBay that
played both 2 and 4 minute.

That would be for the HOME? You lost me there.

The Standard E with only the 4 minute gears means that only one set of gear
teeth is on the mandrel shaft gear and that the 2 minute gear is missing
from the shifter. Conversion will consist of changing the mandrel carriage
drive gear to start with.

It would be easier to take a Model D or F and put on a large carriage arm

the mandrel gear on an E with only the 4 minute teeth is likely more than
the
average collector wants to tackle. It is not hard but does require some

Re: [Phono-L] Edison Standard E question

2009-12-22 Thread ClockworkHome
When George and I wrote up the Standards we did not have a large data base
or a great number of examples of the E. Many years and observations later,
I find that the E, which was introduced while the D was still in production,
appears both with the blocked gear and configured with a 4 minute only
gearing. I see no reason you cannot put D gears into the E for both record
lengths. The Model F appeared at the same time as the E but the D continued
for
a time, disappeared then came back as an ICS machine just before outside
horn machine manufacturing ceased. Thus the gearing from a junked F should
also give you the dual record capability you desire.

BTW - the printer never did get all the Standards put in the right place in
either the first book or George's Companion book. In the Companion book
the Model C Standard is really my early D in the 'tall' cabinet carried over
from the B & early C. In the original book no Model B, Edison's most common
machine, is shown as my Model C with dual gearing is labeled as such. My B
appears in the Companion book labeled correctly.

Hope that helps...

I see in Frow that the 4-minute only Edison Standard model E had the
same basic mechanism as the combination model D, but with the 2-minute
gearing blocked off. Can anyone tell me if the 2-minute gears are
there, and can be put in service without damaging anything through

If the gears aren't there, can it be set up to work in 2-minute mode
if the 2-minute gearing is found? Finally, if this can be done, will
the 2-minute gearing from the Model D make it work, or possibly
anything borrowed from an Edison retrofit combination gear set?

[Phono-L] Edison Standard B question

Glenn,
The horn is a reproduction and the case has been refinished. No
modifications are or were needed to put this carriage on a Model B. As
to why someone would set up this way is anyone's best guess. The
person probably had these parts available to make the machine complete
to sell. Depending on what you are paying for it, I think their are
better machines available which you won't have to fuss around with and
are in more "original condition".

The horn color looks like a repro to me. The odd thing is, it looks like it
has the correct "bead" on the outside where the bell joins the neck. It is
hard to tell from the angle shown, but my vote is that it is repro. The
carriage makes no sense except maybe this machine lost the original one and
someone stuck this one on. The correct carriage would be easy to find.

As an engineer I could not help but to fixate on this "threaded needle

instinctive appeal, but the difficult manufacture is equally
discouraging. As an alternative, have you considered a sabot?

[Phono-L] Edison Standard

2006-12-24 Thread clockworkh...@aol.com
Greetings Richard:

Your Edison Standard is a Model B based on your serial number. The speed
control was moved underneath the bedplate and is a thumbscrew on the motor
frame that moves an arm with the governor pads on it.

The horn was an after market product since Edison provided the smaller 14"
witches hat brass-belled as standard equipment at the time your machine was
made. Your horn may be a little too heavy to hang on the neck of the
reproducer so you should see a ring on top for a horn crane.

The 2/4 minute gearing was later offered by Edison as a modification kit
when the 4 minute records came out. It came with a Model H reproducer to play
the 4 minute cylinders.

This is a good machine that will still be playing 100 years from now.

As a note to the list, the serial number of the Edison machines can guide
you on whether they have been assembled from several junked machines or are
original. Always ask for the serial number of an Edison then do your
homework.
Recently on eBay I saw a Standard machine with a Model B works in a Model D
case with a Diamond B reproducer in a horizontal carriage. The problem here
is that the machine had no 4 minute gears so one must assume they were
playing 2 minute cylinders with the heavy diamond point and destroying them.

Best Wishes,

Al

[Phono-L] Edison Standard

2006-12-24 Thread Richard Rubin
Greetings, everyone. While I've been collecting for quite a while, now, I've
always just stuck to disc machines, but this weekend I stumbled upon an Edison
Standard being offered for for next to nothing, so I picked it up. Trouble is,
I know next to nothing about it, and I'm just trying to figure out what it is.
It has the banner decal and the "C" reproducer, and it doesn't seem to have
been converted to a 2/4 machine, though frankly I don't think I'd be able to
tell if it had been. The serial number is S279 3 56, and the last patent date
on the plaque is November 17, 1903. There is no indication of any model number
(or letter) on the plaque. It has the original crane (1904 patent date on
that) which is black and which doesn't actually attach to the case but rather
sits underneath it, and comes up and out from behind the case. The horn is 25"
long (14" diameter) with a brass bell, but the body of the horn is covered by
something (I've seen it described as "silk," but it feels more like a thin
leatherette), which is actually in very good shape, and which is now kind of a
rust brown in color. The rubber neck is also there and in excellent condition
(it could be a replacement, not sure; it's very thick). I know it's not a
Standard A, since it has a decal and the lid is rounded, not square. The case
(minus the lid) measures 12.5" wide x 6" high x 8.5" deep. So, I guess I'm
wondering: What exactly do I have here? Can anyone tell me anything about the
horn? Is it worth reconditioning the reproducer, or should I just buy a new
one? What is involved in converting this to a 2/4 machine? Would such a
conversion be inauthentic? I should add that it came with 8 2-minute cylinders
in cases, so I suspect it is just a 2-minute machine as it is.

By the way, I haven't seen anyone post any assessments of the Union show this

Well, the mystery deepens. I looked in the newest Reiss book (4th ed. that
is), page 58, and there I see that my machine does, in fact, have the 2/4
minute gearing (left column, third picture from the top). Stranger still,
though, I can't for the life of me figure out where the speed control is on
this phonograph. It's not in the front, to the left of the shutoff switch --
there's not even a hole for it there. Now I truly have no idea what I have.
(Did I mention that, prior to this purchase, I didn't "do" cylinders?) I'll be
happy to send pictures to anyone who asks if it'll help. And thanks in advance
for whatever information/theories you'd care to impart/share.

Anyone know who shellacdisc is on ebay? I've bid against him on an item and
then it occurred to me that he might be a member of the list and I avoid
bidding against a list member as a general rule.

[Phono-L] Edison Standard

Richard:
>From your description, sounds to me like you have a model A standard in the
"New Style" cabinet. These model A's do have the banner decal and the lid
is rounded, not square. They were released in 1901 with the model C
reproducer. If the reproducer is in good shape, it is definitely worth
replacing the stylus and gaskets, and no need to purchase another one. The
horn appears to be a fairly common "silk covered" one that was an
after-market item. As far as the speed adjustment, look inside the machine
for a knurled knob that adjusts the governor speed. Glad to hear that you
are now a cylinder phono collector :)

[Phono-L] Edison Standard Records

2006-12-24 Thread Steven Medved
Hi,

Does anyone have any Edison 2 minute records that the box says Edison
Standard Record on it? Does it have the original lid and record inside? I
am trying to get an idea on how long these were made. The highest number I
have 10482 was released in Mar 1911 and has an Edison Record box, this was
the last month they released 10 recordings. Apr 1911 was when they began to
release five recordings.
