Sounds like a better solution than:

?php

die();

?

:)

Well the post seemed a bit out of context, so I was merely indicating a
good place to start one's search for a PHP problem that seemed awfully
vague... without getting myself involved with picking either side.
Certainly I can sympathize with dying-- anywhere-- but the concept of
unending conflict rather than peace goes somewhat over my head.

WTF? Isn't it the Gaza government (Hamas) that chooses to build
rockets instead of buying food for it's citizens? So long at Hamas is
in charge both the Gaza residents and the Israelis will suffer. Let's
hope this finally roots them out for good.

By the way, of the 400+ killed in Gaza, about 70 were civilians. A
six-to-one ratio of terrorists:civilians really is not that bad,
especially considering that the Hamas hide among the civilians. Hell,
they take kids with them, crying, when they launch rockets just so
that they can say that another kid was killed if they get intercepted.
According to the Geneva convention, it is _Hamas_ that is responsible
for the civilian deaths in Gaza.

By the way, Egypt (who knows better than anyone else in the world)
blames Hamas fully for what has happened in the past week.

 Hi List,

 I would like to appreciate from you all. I hope that you enjoy your
 holidays.
 Children (yes! children) are dying in Gaza, and we're safe! We're happy.
 Happy Christmas!!
 Thank you for supporting Israel, and for being so quite. The God is with
 you!

 How Palestinians defend(!) themselves with stones, and how Zionist are
 performing
 a new holocaust using the American weapons in a prison, named Gaza strip.
 But you now what... this is really good. At least this could bring
 democracy, and freedom to
 middle east. PEACE! HUMAN RIGHTS! YEAH! a lot of bullshit !!.

 We're all responsible for this event. What a shame for mankind in 21th
 century.

 Forget this. This is SPAM and/or PROPAGANDA!

 CHEERS!
 -behzad

First off, I don't think this is the place to get involved into a political
discussion. No matter how much blood is spread, or who's the devil, this is all
about politics, and power, and we are not politicians but programmers. This is
a Zend Framework mailing list, not a human rights forum or an office of the UN.
So, yes, what you are saying is SPAM and PROPAGANDA, since it was unsolicited
and has arrived to the wrong place. If you want us to support your cause, it is
not the place to ask for it. Nobody is going to add a banner to his website
saying Long live Hamas just because you post a message in the Zend Framework
list, on the contrary, you'll generate just the opposite feeling.

Second, if peace and human rights are bullshit for you, I don't know what you
are asking for: WAR and HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION? Peace and human rights are not
bullshit just because a bullshitter speaks about them. It is precisely that
kind of speech (Mr X is a bullshitter, Mr X speaks about peace, ergo, peace is
bullshit) which leads to more war, more harm and more bullshitters talking
about peace and human rights. About democracy and freedom, that is precisely
why you can post a message like this without being tortured and killed (you are
not even being sent off this list). Try that in Iran or Cuba (if you can get an
internet connection there). You don't need to believe in democracy and freedom,
go and praise dictators and build a prison in your country for the ones who
don't agree with you, but don't come to me saying that it's democracy's fault
or freedom's fault that children are being killed... it is a bit more complex
than that, and without democracy and freedom, there would be hundreds of
thousands instead of just hundreds dead.

Thanks to democracy and freedom I can say that Bush is an idiot son of a
bitch, write it on a billboard, make a t-shirt with that slogan and say it to
his face if I ever see him nearby. That won't solve world hunger, but at least
I can complain and do something without being killed. I can say the same about
my president, I'm not an American citizen, I don't live in the US, but my
country has a democracy, a very corrupt democracy, and I prefer that to the
dictatorship we had twenty five years ago. Some principles, such as freedom,
are not tradable.

Third, you are confusing Palestinians with Hamas, not every Palestinian is a
Hamas member. And NO, we are NOT RESPONSIBLE for this event, Hamas and the
Israel government are, NOT US. Hamas decided to end the truce and start
launching rockets and the Israel government decided to bombard them, that's how
history is written. And it has nothing to do with the average Palestinian or
Israeli citizen. I didn't decide to invade Falkland in 1982, the dictatorship
we had took that decision, and thousands of young Argentine soldiers died
because of a wimp. And yes, I believe Falkland is Argentine, but I will never
support a military invasion to the islands just because of that belief.

And fourth, I've not seen the same protests worldwide every time a terrorist
attack kills hundreds of people... I didn't see the left wing parties of my
country complaining on September 11th when 3000 people died, they were actually
drinking to celebrate, the same happened when a car bomb destroyed Israeli
embassy in my country (detonated by Iranian terrorists)... How come now they
are protesting at the same Israeli embassy? What kind of coherence is that? Are
they supporting peace or just violence when it occurs from one side alone? Now,
THAT IS BULLSHIT and I'm tired of it.

Regards,

Rob

There is only 1 military service person that should be thanked for
actions on 9/11 and that is the man who was brave enough to disobey
orders and shoot down the flight over Pennsylvania. The rest who were
involved obeyed orders and let chaos happen.
There are many military men and women who for action after 9/11 deserve
our thanks though.

Thank you,

Hi,

I'm not an American (nor I ever will be), but GW declared the War
himself, so he started it. There's no defense if you start a war and
start attacking another country on behalf of it's citizens.

What these called 'terrorists' was not on behalf on any countries
authorities. BTW, I still think 9/11 is inflicted by the government of
the U.S. of A. themselves, because a lot points towards their
involvement and none points to anyone like Bin Laden..

Or try to anwser at least some of these questions:

Well, there is a MD5 javascript app, if you put a onclick method on your
submit button, to call the javascript, and md5 the password, you could
use a GET request to pass the username and md5'd password into your
login script.

I'm not sure if there is an equivalent SHA javascript, but if there is,
I would use that instead.

To reiterate, no custom headers are sent with any PHP function unless
there is a failure. IE bombs on a successful login (when no custom

Simply execute:

header('Connection: close');

after successful login and before any other output. This is just a shot

[PHP] Thank you, Microsoft! Now I need an alternate login method

2004-03-18 Thread Chris de Vidal
Microsoft broke IE 6.0 SP1 on XP in January, requiring this patch to be
able to log into our MySQL-authenticated website:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=254EB128-5053-48A7-8526-BD38215C74B2displaylang=en

Microsoft won't put out this patch into the regular XP updates (I guess
because many websites use an alternate method and it doesn't impact as
many people). You have to download it manually.

Of course, this is generating many complaints and we even lost a few
customers; people believe we're requring them to install software just to
log in, when we're really just requiring they fix something Microsoft
broke.

So I really need an alternate MySQL-authenticated method. Surely they exist?

I have a login page on an SSL-enabled Apache server that (I don't admin).

Here's my code (you can download a complete copy from
http://devidal.tv/~chris/mysql_auth.tar.bz2, including the SQL to create
the members table).

login.php:

input type=text name=email
input type=password name=password
input type=submit value=Log in
/form

===

edit_agent.php:
===
?php
require_once (open_db.php);
require_once (check_login.php);

echo You won't be able to see this unless you have a valid login.;

require_once (close_db.php);
?
==

check_login.php:

?php
require_once (valid_email.php);
$email = $_POST[email];
if (!valid_email ($email))
{
require_once (close_db.php);
header (Location: login.php?login_failed=true);
exit;
}

// Only alphanumeric
$password = preg_replace (/[^\w]/, , $_POST[password]);

$query =
SELECT ID
FROM members
WHERE Email = '$email'
AND Password = PASSWORD('$password')
AND Active = '1'
;

$result = @mysql_query ($query);

// Only if we have matching records
if ([EMAIL PROTECTED] ($result) = 1)
{
require_once (close_db.php);
header (Location: login.php?login_failed=true);
exit;
}
?
=

valid_email.php:

?php
function valid_email($email)
{
if (ereg (^([^[:space:]]+)@(.+)\.(.+)$, $email))
{
return TRUE;
} else {
return FALSE;
}
}
?
=

open_db.php is just mysql_connect and mysql_select_db, while close_db.php
is just mysql_free_result and mysql_close. I've included them in the
tarball above as well as the SQL you will need if you want to try this for
yourself.

Again, this code worked well until Microsoft broke IE. It still works if
you apply the patch that Microsoft isn't rolling out to everyone.

I'd considered using Apache's .htaccess files, but I haven't tried
connecting that to MySQL for authentication. And I don't have admin
access on the box to install anything on the server.

Ideas??

issue a meta refresh, or a javascript one.

 I'd considered using Apache's .htaccess files, but I haven't tried
 connecting that to MySQL for authentication. And I don't have admin
 access on the box to install anything on the server.

 Ideas??

 What exactly is breaking? If it's the header to redirect, you could just
 issue a meta refresh, or a javascript one.

The only time redirects are sent is when there is a failure. Otherwise
it's a simple post operation to a PHP file with an include.

Have another look at the code. Try it on your server if you'd like. You
can replicate the problem with an XP box that's recently (this month) been
automatically updated.

If I ran XP I might be able to do that. From reading the security
release my MS, it sounds like some times the POST request gets b0rked,
if this is the case, I'm not sure there's much that can be done about
it.

Yep.

...except find an alternate login method, which is my question. I know
this isn't a problem on every site else there'd be far more uproar against
Microsoft for not pushing it out. Surely there must be another method
other than the code I showed this mailing list.

I searched this group and someone suggested disabling Apache's keepalives
but I don't have root on this box so that option is out.

At this point it's either disable passwords or find an alternate method;
we're angering customers (thank you Microsoft!).

maybe this is too simple an answer but how about using GET instead?

I'm about 90% sure that URL strings are passed in the clear to SSL
servers, so this would defeat the purpose of SSL.

I've found that some people have solved this problem by upgrading the
server to a newer version of PHP. Again, I don't have admin access. The
box is admined by a medium-sized hosting company so they might ignore my
requests for them to upgrade.

Are there any other ways to authorize using MySQL?

I don't think this is true. You can see the query string in the
address bar, but (with what little http knowledge I have) the http
conversation is encrypted, if you sniff it, the contents will be
encrypted, even the query string.

This still might make the user uncomfortable (it'd make me uncomfortable)
so we can't ignore the warm fuzzy factor.

But if you can confirm this, perhaps it'd be good enough.

It seems this was fixed in a newer version of PHP or Apache or OpenSSL.
Perhaps their lazy admins just need to update their server. Of course,
I've been known to miss a few upgrades (he he he :-) so there's certainly
an allowance for laziness, but not if my request for them to upgrade is
ignored.

Do you know of any other MySQL-enabled auth methods? Can you confirm GET

CSS does not make forms! HTML makes forms, and CSS can be used to style

I can't speak for other software, but you need one of the full versions
of Acrobat to do forms. There may be a competitor to Acrobat, or one
of the PHP-PDF libraries that can do it programatically, but I have no
idea about that.

I think you mean forms completely styled with CSS, don't you? The
answer is yes, but it would depend on your definition of complex.

Do a google search... there's plenty of reading to do out there :)

http://alistapart.com/stories/practicalcss/ is one place to start.

If the forms are already created in PDF, then who created them? That
person must have access to the higher versions of Acrobat, therefor
must be able to edit the files, specifying a target script on the web
to which they will be to POSTed.

I changed two lines in the php.ini file and ran the phpinfo() function call

In that version, there is no php_gd2.dll - just php_gd.dll.

 Action.php contains this code:
 Hi ?php echo $_POST[name]; ?.
 You are ?php echo $_POST[age]; ? years old.

 I saved action.php as a text file with only the information above.

 When I enter JoeBob into the name field and 27 into the age field, I get
 this for output:
 Hi

I hope this isn't viewed as impolite on this list. I just wanted to
write all of you to thank you for the immeasurable contributions you
have made to the project I've been working on for the last three
months:

http://www.readfrank.com/

It is a site supporting an English language literary magazine
published here in Paris, and has new stories and articles every day.

While it is hard to see through the pretty pictures and words to the
infinitely recursing arrays (which this list helped me debug) and the
amazing grep challenge 2000 (which this list polished for me), we all
know how crucial those invisible little combinations of syntax can be
to bringing beautiful things to the surface.

Please feel free to visit the site *if you want*. I just wanted to
let you ALL know that even though we've never met, you've made me a
smarter person and have helped bring the work of perhaps otherwise
obscured talented writers and artists to the masses.

Thank You Friends,
Sondra

 Thank you. This has been the biggest help so far.

 But, if it's a user entered string is their anyway
 to
 do this without having to parse the string and
 looking
 for the # sign and then reconstructing the string.
 That would be very difficult to do.

 I would appreciate any comments you might have.

 Thanks again

   I have a text input field in my form. I need
 the
   user
   to be able to enter something like: Hello, I
 need
   #
   help. After which they click on a submit
 button.
   The
   succeeding page then takes this text and tries
 to
   display it and tries to store Hello, I need #
   help
   in a varchar field in a mysql table column.
 The
   mysql database is truncating the # sign and the
   text
   succeeding the # sign. Also, absolutly no text
 is
   being diplayed on the succeeding web page.
 I've
   tried
 using addslashes() and I was warned against
 using
   htmlentities(). Also, I'm not sure if I'm
 dealing
   with 2 issues: A mysql issue and a html issue.
 Or,
   am

 HTML
   issue.

   I know think my problem is that when I pass
 text to

 it
   as
   a comment. Is their any way to somehow escape
 the
   #

Re: [PHP] Thank you Rebecca

2001-09-18 Thread Rebecca Donley

Glad to be of help John. Wish I could think of something a little more
elegant. The # seemed like an odd choice to me for a comment line because
it's a well used character in both html and common text. I'm surprised it
hasn't given a lot of people trouble.

Excellent idea Rebecca. I guess I'll have to resort
to this because no one else out there seems to have
ever had this problem. You've been a big help. Thank
you for your ideas.

  What about writing a function to change all the #

  I'm pretty new to PHP so
  I'm not sure what string functions are available but
  in ASP you could just
  use a replace function.

 Hello and thank you.

   I'm trying to find a function(method) or existing
 code taht takes the number of minutes that have
 passed
 in a day and returns the time of the day. For
 example:

  780 minutes == 1pm,
  0 minutes == 12am,
  etc,etc.

 so I'm looking for code that when you enter the
 number
 of minutes, it returns the time of day.

 example:

 $some_time = foo(780);

 print($some_time);

//prints 1:00pm

 Thnaks again.

[PHP] Thank you to all

2001-06-18 Thread Todd Cary

As I read the sniping remarks coming from MS about open source software,
I find it necessary to say thank you to the developers of PHP and the
incredible support I have received on these PHP forums. And they say
open source applications are dangerous to companies (and MS has been
using open source along in their own applications!!).

So, thank you for providing me with the tools to create a rather
sophisticated Web application with no prior experience using PHP.

In gratitude

Todd
