Powerbook 1400 Problem update 2

2006-02-02 Thread brandymilner
Hi everyone,
I managed to download iCab 2.9.8 and installed it on the Powerbook. I am on
the network!
Thanks again to everyone who offered suggestions and helped with this little
project.
Now, I need to learn to use iCab, but I'm on the network!
Thanks,
Roy

iCab 2.9.8 is my own personal browser of choice, actually -- both on my
Powerbooks and on my desktop Macs. I love it. It took me no time to get
used to it, and I found I actually DON'T like Netscape (my prior chosen
browser, which I used from 1996-2003) nearly as much anymore. These days
I only use Netscape as a backup browser.

Netscape still says it can't make a connection.

Don't know if this bears on the problem or not, but Netscape 3.x.x seems to
suffer from electronic Alzheimer's occasionally. The cure for it was to go to
Mail and Newsgroup Preferences select Identity and click the box that says:
Use Internet Config and then try to sign on. It always worked. After
signing on a couple of times, the box can be unchecked and sign-on worked normally.

Re: Powerbook 1400 problem

2006-01-30 Thread GalBros

In a message dated 1/29/06 10:52:37 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Okay, good news and bad news. I went into the hard drive, Apple Extras
folder, and found Network Software Selector. There was TCP/IP. I selected
it. I had to restart the computer. Then I opened the control panel, TCP/IP.

Out of sight! Now we're cooking with grease!

There were several choices, so I'll start at the top. First was Connect
via:, I selected alternate ethernet.
Second was Configure:, I selected using DHCP server.
Third, it asks for IP address, Subnet mask, router address, and Name server
address. But all of these have will be selected by server beside them.

That is exactly what it is supposed to say.

Now the bad news. Netscape still says it can't make a connection. However,
I'm not disgusted yet because I'm trying to route this through my DSL modem
at home and it probably won't work here.

More bad news: The above setup of TCP/IP should work with DSL, Cable Modem...
any network setup. In fact, if you re-open the TCP/IP panel, the address
should be populated with numbers. If they start with 169 that means you do
not
have a connection with the network, however.

After checking that you have a good connection via the ethernet cable from
the DSL modem to your laptop (or if there is a router/switch in between), I
would try another ethernet cable.

I'm going to try it at work
tomorrow on that network. That's where I really want it to work anyway.
Any comments or suggestions about what to try?

a few:
1) what version of Netscape are you using? Maybe it's too old to properly use
over an ethernet connection (doubt it), or maybe it has not been configured
correctly to use via DHCP? Maybe it is setup to use via a PPP dialup connection?

2) To get another internet app on your laptop, you could find a AOL cd-rom
floating around somewhere.

I just thought of something; earlier I think you mentioned that, either in
MacTCP or TCP/IP, you had the choice of ethernet or alternate ethernet.

Do you have an ethernet port in the rear of your 1400? If you do, it would be
the last port on the left inside the rear port cover door.

Powerbook 1400 Problem Update

2006-01-30 Thread brandymilner
Okay,
I tried the computer on the network at work today. I could actually see the
homepage! Then the problems started. I got one Java error message after
another, until I got the sad Mac and error 11--restart. Which I did three
times. The fourth time, I got the sad mac and the computer locked up.

I know the card is good, I know the computer is doing its job. I think
Netscape is my problem now. I will wait until I can get the software for
another browser such as iCab or something more Mac friendly.

To the lister who wrote saying I should be able to get on the net at home
through my DSL modem, you're probably right. However, the modem is
configured, I think, either/or, not USB and ethernet. My PC is using the USB
port to get on the internet, so I don't think it will recognize the ethernet
port. I tried disconnecting the USB cable, but still no luck.

Thanks to everyone who offered help, I really appreciate it. I hope I can
return the favor some time.

Sounds like too old a version of IE to handle Java. You might want to
take a look at iCab--it's Mac-specific, and should run well on your

Sounds like your version of Netscape is out of date.

I know the card is good, I know the computer is doing its job. I think
Netscape is my problem now. I will wait until I can get the software for
another browser such as iCab or something more Mac friendly.

Well, if your home PC has a cd burner, simply download the Mac version of a
browser - like Internet Explorer 5 off Microsoft.com - and burn it on a cd. OS
7.5.5 should not have any problem reading a pc cd-rom, I don't think.

Come to think of it, though, I am not sure what version of IE can work with
OS 7.5.5. I use IE 5.1.7 on my 5300, but it requires OS 8.1. I know the rest of
the list can help you with a modern browser for your OS, though.

To the lister who wrote saying I should be able to get on the net at home

Aha; did not know you were using the USB connection on your modem. I think
they are either/or. And yes, you may have to reconfigure it to use it via
Ethernet cable. Of course, a cheap router would allow you to use both
simultaniously.

Thanks to everyone who offered help, I really appreciate it. I hope I can
return the favor some time.

The 1400 probably does not have enough RAM or CPU for Netscape 6.

NS 4.75, 4.78, 4,79 are probably about it.

I use NS 6 at home on my old PCI MACs and IE 5 on my 1400 until I have time to
sort out NS 4.79 on it.

Powerbook 1400 problem

2006-01-29 Thread brandymilner
Hi,
I'm new to this list, so please bear with me if this has been addressed
before.
I'm using a Powerbook 1400cs, running OS 7.5.3. I'm trying to connect to an
ethernet network with a Global Village PowerPort Platinum Pro PC card. The
computer recognizes the card. When I open Netscape, I get a message that
Netscape could not establish a connection because of lack of resources. I
have plenty of memory, so that's not the problem. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Roy

Yes, I have the factory disks for the modem and installed them. I have
MacTCP set for ethernet alternative. The card also has a network setting and
I have that set for ethernet as well.

I bought the powerbook and the card off ebay, and I've about decided I have
a bad card. The network guru here doesn't know anything about mac's, so
he's not much help. At least he did try to help, it's just a foreign

Thanks for trying,

Could it be an OS issue? You mentioning MacTCP reminded me that there were
differences with older OS's; the earliest OS I have ever wifi'd is 7.6.1. Could
it be that perhaps some PC card extensions are needed?

I bought the powerbook and the card off ebay, and I've about decided I
have a bad card. The network guru here doesn't know anything about mac's,
so he's not much help. At least he did try to help, it's just a foreign

Before concluding that the card is bad, I would try to use the modem part of
it. I once had a card that was not working, that turned out to be just a bad
dongle.

In MacTCP, how do you have it setup? DHCP? Ability to have the address
set
 automaticly?
Yes, I have it set to automatically set the address. I didn't see DHCP, but
that doesn't mean it's not there. I'm new at networking a mac on a PC
network like this. It shouldn't make any difference since it's ethernet, but
then I don't really know much about ethernet either. The Network guru said
it shouldn't make any difference because ethernet is ethernet and it doesn't
care what kind of computer I use.
Could it be an OS issue? You mentioning MacTCP reminded me that there were
differences with older OS's; the earliest OS I have ever wifi'd is 7.6.1.
Could
it be that perhaps some PC card extensions are needed?
I don't think it would be an OS issue because the card is recognized by the
computer. The computer thinks I have a PC card and it will let me change
everything to ethernet settings. It could be Netscape, but I don't have a
way to get any other browser to try. I live a pretty good distance from any
major hub cities, so I'm probably the only person in my county with a mac. I
know I'm the only person in this area trying to get on a network with a mac.
I bought the powerbook and the card off ebay, and I've about decided I
have a bad card. The network guru here doesn't know anything about
mac's,

Before concluding that the card is bad, I would try to use the modem part
of
it. I once had a card that was not working, that turned out to be just a
bad
 dongle.
And how would Ido that? I don't have access to a dialup network here. I
don't have any adapters to hook between the card and the network. I have DSL
at home and I don't think the mac will even see that.

I do appreciate the help and thank you very much for trying. I will try
anything anybody suggests, within reason.
Thanks,
Roy

Okay, you are probably right. But, I have to select PPP or ethernet, so I
would think that would take PPP out of the mix. I could be wrong, as I say
I'm new at this. I didn't see anything about DHCP, but that doesn't mean
it's not there. Where would I look for this?

When I first started with this, I didn't have the thing set for ethernet
because I didn't know where to look. Then, I would get the message to check
configPPP and make sure it's set right. But that file can't be opened. I
don't know if it's a software issue or if the computer just won't let me get
to it. But since I have the network control panel set to ethernet, I don't
get this message anymore.

I thought I was pretty good at this mac stuff, especially this older
equipment, but I've about decided I'm in over my head. So as I said before,
any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Roy

Okay, something new to add to the mix. The PC card is on the desktop. When I
double click that, I get 5 options, one of which is PC card. This opens a
box that has several settings. The correction and compression settings shows
6 radio buttons: off, MNP4, V.42, MNP5, V.42bis, and MNP10EC. I have off
selected. Anyone recommend something else?

It also has 2 choices below that: Maximum Throughput and Ring on Incoming
call. I have maximum throughput selected.

And then another choice to make. When serial port opens, Init settings or
show status. I have show status selected.

This also shows the software version as 2.5.7, which I think is the highest
that will run on 7.5.3, but I could be wrong.

Any thoughts?

Thanks again for the help.

Go into the TCP/IP control panel and select Ethernet or Alternate Ethernet
depending on which one shows up. Then, you should see a drop-down menu with
Configure beside it, in the Setup pane. Select Using DCHP Server from
that menu, and that should do it.

Anyway, dear 1400 user, when in the MacTCP control panel, with ethernet

I don't think I've seen this mentioned. MacTCP is infamous for it's
problems with BootP. IIRC it doesn't use DHCP.

MacTCP is the predecessor of TCP/IP in what IIRC is known as Classic
Networking.

Okay, I pulled up the MacTCP control panel. I have 3 choices at the top of
the screen: EtherTalk (A), Ethernet built-in, and PPP. I have selected
EtherTalk (A).
At the bottom of this screen is an IP Address, currently showing 8.0.0.0,
and then a more button below that. I'm not sure what the IP address should
be set at, the network guru said that wasn't important for our network.
Anyway, when I click on the more button, I get one screen with four
sections. The first section is Obtain Address and 3 choices: Manually,
Server, Dynamically. I have Dynamically selected. Below that is Node Range:
From: and To:. I have From 1, To 126.
The second box is Gateway Address:, currently set at 0.0.0.0.
The third box is the busiest. I have Class:, currently A. I have Address:,
currently 8.0.0.0. I have subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0. Then I have Net:, set at
8, Subnet: set at ), and Node: set at 0. There is also a slider currently
set with 8 bits Net, 0 bits subnet, and 24bits Node.
The fourth box is Domain Name Server Information, showing different
addresses. The previous owner has Hiwaay.net, with IP address 208.
147.144.2. I have changed to a blank Domain with a blank address, which is
probably not going to work at all, but something to try.
I don't see anything about DHCP, so I'm assuming I don't have that option.
thanks again for all the help, I really appreciate it.

Okay, can I get a MacTCP/IP control panel somewhere? Bear in mind, I can't
get the mac online so a download is out of the question.
thanks,
Roy

Yeah, I believe you; I just warmed up my 540c that runs OS 7.5.3, and it
has
a TCP/IP panel. I think perhaps the MacTCP mentioned by the lister is
another
app used for something else, like FreePPP or something.

To the 1400 lister; do you have a TCP/IP Control panel?

I don't think I've seen this mentioned. MacTCP is infamous for it's
problems with BootP. IIRC it doesn't use DHCP.

MacTCP is the predecessor of TCP/IP in what IIRC is known as Classic
 Networking.

Re: Powerbook 1400 problem

2006-01-29 Thread brandymilner
Okay, good news and bad news. I went into the hard drive, Apple Extras
folder, and found Network Software Selector. There was TCP/IP. I selected
it. I had to restart the computer. Then I opened the control panel, TCP/IP.
There were several choices, so I'll start at the top. First was Connect
via:, I selected alternate ethernet.
Second was Configure:, I selected using DHCP server.
Third, it asks for IP address, Subnet mask, router address, and Name server
address. But all of these have will be selected by server beside them.
Now the bad news. Netscape still says it can't make a connection. However,
I'm not disgusted yet because I'm trying to route this through my DSL modem
at home and it probably won't work here. I'm going to try it at work
tomorrow on that network. That's where I really want it to work anyway.
Any comments or suggestions about what to try? I really appreciate everyone
pitching in to help the newbie. I will try to be as helpful to all of you in
the future. This is the newest mac that I have, but I have an SE/30, several
Powerbook 170's, and even an Apple IIe that I have actually managed fairly
well with in the past.
Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions, I'll let you know how it goes
tomorrow.
Roy

EtherTalk is MacIP or IP over AppleTalk. Use this only if you are
using MacIP. If you don't know, assume you aren't.

Otherwise use Ethernet Built in.

Thanks, I will keep this in mind. Wouldn't ethernet built in assume an
ethernet modem installed inside the powerbook instead of an ethernet PC
card? Showing my ignorance here, I know, but still have to ask.
Thanks,
Roy

No such thing as an Ethernet modem. It says built-in because MacTCP
is too old to differentiate.
