Hi Steve, Volume Automation with out a hard surface and ProTools may be difficult. What you can try though, Use Clip Gain. Select the track and highlight the location you want to edit. To lower the level of say your vocals, hold down control, shift, and down arrow to the volume you want.

You can fade from region boundaries but the resulting fade in always just goes to full power of the clip and fade outs start from full power and fade out completely. To be sure, the shape of the curve can be changed but it's not the same as a volume ride. It's limited in terms of function,
