Hi Steve, Volume Automation with out a hard surface and ProTools may be difficult. What you can try though, Use Clip Gain. Select the track and highlight the location you want to edit. To lower the level of say your vocals, hold down control, shift, and down arrow to the volume you want.

Hi Steve, One solution that might help you to some degree is to use half-speed playback. Press Shift-space Bar and the transport will playback at half-speed and any fader moves you make will play back at normal speed when you finish the automation pass. It's not the best but it might help you

You can fade from region boundaries but the resulting fade in always just goes to full power of the clip and fade outs start from full power and fade out completely. To be sure, the shape of the curve can be changed but it's not the same as a volume ride. It's limited in terms of function,
