I broke my leg about 10 years ago. I have osteoporosis and I went to 3
different doctors and none of them would do anything, not even a boot. I
was so upset because I had just got insurance that would allow me to get a
standing. 5 1/2 years ago I had foot surgery for footdrop. They left the
More than once. We used a boot and even then had to be sure and check for
pressure sores. My dr absolutely would not do a hard cast.

You need to remember that I broke my leg back in 1974 there weren't to many
quads out there like there are now.

Hi BeeJ,
For what it’s worth, I’ve written about this subject and know many people with
SCI that have
broken leg bones. You do NOT want a hard cast. The best option is to get a
soft cast or if
the fracture needs more stability a custom orthotic cast that splits in half,
is well-padded and

Some drunk guy thought I was faking being in a manual chair, this is 1974, and
pulled me out of my chair.
I had a plaster cast and got pressure sores on my heal.

I too had a spiral fracture doing something similar. Had a hard cast
that was replaced a few times and after the last one came off, I noticed
my heal had started to break down. Be careful

I've had a similar break and broke it in a similar way. They put me in a
removable boot both because it was a spiral fracture and they were concerned
about potential pressure sores. I would pay attention to any signs that
something is not right and that something could be pressure from
and knees. They cut holes in the braces to relieve the
pressure but it took nearly two years to heal the sores. Twas very bad.
Beware hard casts...and good luck

I must concur John. I am not a doctor, but I have known a lot of SCI
individuals who have broken their legs over the years and one thing is a
constant, no hard cast. At least that's the case for the hospital here
where there is overwhelming number of SCI patients.
In fact, there are probably

Did the Ortho consider the use of an electric stimulator before placing the
cast on to help stimulate growth in the bone. Its been done in sports
medicine to promote faster healing. Just thought to mention.
Best Wishes

Ok, a hard cast? It won't be his pressure sore.

I did exactly the same thing last year - a tibia/fibula spiral fracture. Three
months in a splint in bed in the hospital. Luckily, I'm a Veteran so there is
no worry about cost. I am a C3/4 incomplete with sensation so there was a lot
of pain. You may have more bouts of AD. Be strong!
This is why I had full foot plates on my chair. They will put a foam and velcro
splint on your leg. It will heal very slowly. You have to try to stay immobile.
If you screw it up too bad they can only amputate it. You will need a low air
loss mattress because you can't be moving around much.

My leg has broken 2 x and was only set with a velcro cast. Unfortunately, my led did not heal perfectly straight. I did have bone density scan which revealed extreme loss of density ( 1 am 4.5 years post). I now take fosamax. Is that the medication one of us said developed spurs?Best,BRIENOn
Then again, you know what they call the worst doctor to graduate medical school?
Doctor!
I get those tiny fractures from the way the bones deformed after the accident when I broke my neck. Actually,, the broken neck was only one of many things broken. A lot of the bones didn't and won't heal

My primary sent me to an ortho, he's the one who put the soft cast on the leg etc...I have no issues with him. I have issues with the primary who dropped the ball 3 times. I thought that was clear in my original post.Anyway, can you tell me what you took for osteoporosis? My concerns were
raloxifene, (not sure bout the spelling) but it has been awhile. It probably was clear in or original post but I take meds that make me "hard o' thinkin' at times.
I do wish you the best and please let me know how things go.
I felt like the magnets helped but I couldn't prove it. Sounds silly
