[QUAD-L] kidney stone info
There are different types of kidney stones, here is some info: If you have had a kidney stone that contains oxalate, some evidence (research) suggests that limiting high oxalate foods may help reduce your change of forming another oxalate stone. Foods that are high in oxalate include: peanuts, tea, instant coffee (more than 8 ounces a day), rhubarb, beets, beans, beets, berries (blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, gooseberries, etc.), chocolate, Concord grapes, dark leafy greens, oranges, tofu, sweet potatoes and draft beer. Because the stone contains calcium and oxalate, you may also need to follow the calcium recommendations from the last question. Is there anything else I can do with my diet to help prevent the formation of kidney stones? Reducing the amount of animal protein may help. Sources of animal protein include beef, chicken, port, fish and eggs. Most people need only four to six ounces of high protein foods and three servings of milk or cheese a day. Check with your doctor or dietitian to be sure your protein intake is enough, but not too much. Will it help/hurt me to take a vitamin or mineral supplement? The B vitamins (which include thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, B6 and B12) have not been shown to be harmful to people with kidney stones. However, check with your doctor or dietitian for advice on the use of vitamin C, vitamin D, fish liver oils or mineral supplements containing calcium since some supplements can increase the chances of stone formation in some people. I had a calcium stone. What type of diet should I follow? Will I have to avoid high calcium foods? If you have had a calcium stone, your doctor may ask you to cut back on the salt and sodium in your diet. Extra sodium causes you to lose more calcium in your urine, putting you at risk for developing another stone. Your doctor will probably advise you to limit your sodium to 2,000 to 3,000 milligrams a day. Your dietitian can help you make sodium changes in your diet. You may not need to avoid excessive (too much) calcium in your diet. It is important that you learn from your doctor and dietitian the right balance of calcium you should eat. Following a diet low in calcium for a long period of time can lead to a loss of bone mass, or osteoporosis. A registered dietitian or doctor can help determine if you need more or less calcium and help with the sodium changes in your diet.

However, sometimes the body doesn't know when to stop swelling -- that's where ice comes in. When a cold pack is applied to your skin, it "acts to slow down metabolism at the injury site, so your body can begin healing itself more quickly." Ice also acts as an analgesic to slow down and block pain impulses.Icing an injury:* Slows the inflammation and swelling that occurs after injury. Most back pain is accompanied by some type of inflammation, and addressing the inflammation also helps reduce the pain.* Helps to relieve the pain by numbing sore tissues (like a local anesthetic).* Slows the nerve impulses in the area, which interrupts the pain- spasm reaction between the nerves.Ice should be applied soon after the injury occurs. The coldness makes the veins in the tissue contract, which reduces circulation in the area. After the cold compress is removed, the veins overcompensate and dilate. ~pt.2~DONKEY TRACKS" ~~ from: The White Donkey SocietyJanuary 26, 2005 ~TRAILSofLIVING~ LEAVE THE WORLD A BIT BETTER by Ron White Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote a poem on success. One of his measures of success in that poem was to, 'Leave the world a bit better.' That line has always stuck in my head. Emerson said you have succeeded if you leave the world a bit better. I have made that line part of my life philosophy. When the tide goes out there is a watermark where the water was. When the waters of life recede from the shore of my being and my heart pumps for the last time, my desire is that there will be a mark where I stood. My aim is that the mark will say, 'For some decades a man occupied this space who saw others more important than himself and efforted to leave the world a better place for them and those yet to come.' Our society tells us that success is measured by bank accounts, power, beauty and wealth. These are often the result of hard work, luck or birth. They are not evil and I strive for some of them daily. However, they are not the mark I will measure the success of my life with. So how do you do it? How do you 'leave the world a bit better?' -- You give a percent of your income away to a charity or church. This makes your community better. -- You save a percentage of your income to pass down to your family when you leave. -- You volunteer your time for those who are less fortunate. Are you volunteering anywhere? -- You mentor someone who needs a positive direction in life. -- You follow and get involved in politics. Our laws and leaders will determine the future. You can have a hand in that future. Or you can amass as much wealth as you can, spend it as fast as you can on the fading desires of your heart and seek to please you first. Our culture might tell you that this is success. Emerson tells us that it is not. I encourage you to realize that the waters of your life will eventually withdraw from the shore. When it does, will there be a watermark? ~TRAILS ofLIFE~ Speed of Light The most widely known scientific equation, E = mc2, shows that the ratio between mass and energy is the square of the speed of light. People speak of light-years without even understanding how fast light travels. Light travels at over 186,000 miles each second; thats to the moon and back in just a few seconds. Unlike sound waves, light does not easily bend around corners or reflect off objects. Shadows form when an object blocks the path of light. If the object moves, the light immediately continues on its path and the shadow is gone in less than the blink of an eye. Silhouette portraits were a popular art form in the 18th and 19th centuries. People would trace their shadow outline on paper and use various colors to represent the light and shadowed areas. But shadows are merely a crude representation of the real object. Shadows have neither weight nor smell. They make no sound nor do they have anything you can touch. Shadows are dark, empty, and valueless. From the view of eternity, our days can be passing shadows. Can you remember what worries and anxieties preoccupied your thoughts a year ago today? Will you remember todays stress and troubles a year from now? How much less will these struggles matter when were in heaven with our Lord. Were called to redeem these evil times, but some days seem to get the best of us. We must keep our eyes focussed on eternal goals because once today is over, weve forever lost an opportunity to serve our King. How do you spend your time? As good stewardships of Gods money, were urged to tithe our financial resources. Do we consider the stewardship of our time as an equally serious matter? We have not done all the good works God has prepared for us because we have not been good stewards of our time. Our days have become mere shadows of the potential blessings and victories God placed before us. Too many of our days are dark, empty, and valueless. But our days should matter to us. They matter to God. He has given us precious time to worship Him, to spread His Gospel, and to be conformed to the image of His Son. Amazingly, our awesome God sovereignly plans and directs each of our days. He never gives us more than we can handle. The Good Shepherd guides us to refreshing pastures and leads us through the trials that come our way. His Word promises us that He is working out everything for the good of His sons and daughters. Some people complain that they do not have time to pray. But with so much at stake each and every day, what could be more important? Let us commit to making our days treasures instead of mere shadows of the blessings God meant for us. Psalm 144:3-4 "Lord, what is man, that You take knowledge of him? Or the son of man, that You are mindful of him? Man is like a breath; His days are like a passing shadow." 2002-2004 Peter Murphy ~TRAILS ofSCRIPTURE~ Proverbs 21:22 A wise man

There is a similar program here. Plus they have ramp art which raises money by selling artwork done by disabled people. They use the money to build ramps for homeowners, plus but I'm not sure its covered by Ramp art, one day a year people volunteer to come and do yard work, small maintance stuff and painting. There again you must own the home. There are also low interest loans for 'qualified' people to buy houses. Re: [QUAD-L] Re: Sci appearances
I use my chair to move things. Otherwise you will be stuck in places waiting for an AB to wonder by. My mother has been in the hospital this past week and they are notorious for putting trash cans in front of elevator buttons. Sure enough in the lobby, there it was. I pushed it over in front of one of the elevators! Then found a piece of wood with a hole in it for the elevator button! What! I tried pushing it, but..anyway a man came up and pushed it for me. He had seen me move the trash can too, so he moved it to the other side of the elevator. At least when I got to the floor there was no trash can to contend with and no wood around the button. When it comes to clothing stores and those round clothes hangers, I just push thru them. If something falls, too bad, if dog hair gets on the clothes, too bad. Don't mean to sound pessimistic, but the ADA has been in effect for 14 (?) years, I think thats long enough to make aisles wide enough to comply!. I push things around my apartment--the fan and heater etc., in conference type rooms, I will push chairs out of my way, but will put them nicely in line or next to anotherone. [QUAD-L] Wireless microphone
I have been continuing to have problems with my microphone over the past year and and finally becoming frustrated enough that I am considering purchasing a new one. Unfortunately, my wireless system has a unique plug which will not allow me to purchase any other microphone to use with it. I would love to go to a microphone which eliminates ambient noise and so far the best system I have been able to find is the Sennheiser Headset Microphone/Nady Encore II package (Knownbrainer). Has anybody had any experience with this type of microphone utilizing NaturallySpeaking? I am more concerned about wearing the microphone for extended periods of time and been able to access my mouth stick to turn pages and do some keyboard functions. I currently wear a lapel microphone, but it receives a tremendous amount of ambient noise and just doesn't seem to be as accurate as it used to be. Hi Smurf, By DAISY NGUYEN, Associated Press Writer GLENDALE, Calif. - "A commuter train smashed into an SUV left on the tracks by a suicidal man early Wednesday, sending the train careening off the rails in a wreck that killed 10 people and injured about 200, authorities said. Dozens of the injured were in critical condition. After the Metrolink train hit the SUV, it derailed and crashed with another train going in the opposite direction. Both trains landed on their sides, sending passengers tumbling down the aisles, authorities said. "The Fannie Mae Foundation's programs show the breadth and depth of our commitment to improving affordable housing and homeownership opportunities, especially for low-income and minority families. Our commitment starts with helping individuals and families develop the skills they need to become homeowners. But it doesn't stop there. We also are committed to recognizing and rewarding the good work being done in America's cities, towns, and rural areas to provide decent, safe, affordable housing for low- and moderate-income families. We provide prestigious educational opportunities for those in the affordable housing and community development field. And we support special programs to raise awareness and much-needed funds to prevent and end homelessness in our hometown of Washington, D.C." http://www.fanniemaefoundation.org/programs/index.shtml I hope this helps. You might look into asking you city if they have grants you might qualify for. I'm getting $5000 to help make my house more accessible. I just bought a house and the doors have a 4 inch step. So I'm getting $5000 to ramp them and use to put in a roll in shower. No hassles, just get 3 bids. I never thought I'd qualify. I found out about it on a fluke. Just saw a story about grants, so I called the city and asked if our city did. Greg

Re: [QUAD-L] Strange Pain
I think I know what you are talking about but it's hard to explain. For me it isn't hot or cold but kinda like a bit of pressure builds and then all the sudden lets loose. It does kinda feel like something rushes through. I dont mention it b/c I can't explain it. Also it doesn't hurt but almost feels sorta neat and better.
