RE: [QUAD-L] RECOMMENDATIONS, PCAs Healthy Relations

2010-01-02 Thread Tod E. Santee
Hi Joan...

Don't be too jealous... from what I understand it never lasts and it rarely
ends well!!

But then again, there was one person that helped me out with some emergency
PCA Care when I first arrived in Tucson after my parents pulled out to start
driving back east. All because my previously arranged and hired aide got
arrested and jailed on a DUI the night before I arrived!!! The person that
volunteered to help me had never done personal care before that --and hasn't
worked for anyone else since. I was invited to the family's Thanksgiving
Dinner. AND NOW, we've been married since just over a year since that time 20
years ago! (I still get to Thanksgiving, I'm in the family Christmas gift
exchange, and she still helps me out with PCA work in a pinch. --for a price!!!
{lol})

So, to keep with the Subject Line... Recommendation: Choose your help wisely,
use your SOLID gut instinct, and then marry the best! (LOL... Ok... I'll admit
that track might not work for everyone. But it DOES make for a nice,
beginning-of-the-year, holiday story, eh?)

Happy Oh-10, my Friends!

[QUAD-L] Chair repair (Again)

2010-01-02 Thread Greg
So after 3 or 4 screw-ups getting my chair fixed (it would come back with
more problems than I sent it in with, some minor some major). It finely came
back and seemed to be OK. BUT.., I took it out for a longer ride and notice
the speed was set about 25% lower. I made an appointment to go in and get it
fixed while I was in my chair. They wont let me stay in my chair unless it's
a minor thing they can fix in the lobby. I can't go into the shop. The day
after it came back 2 things happened. First, was my single post legrest
dropped an inch. I had them raise it because they dropped earlier. It has a
belt that raises and lowers them as you recline, for less sheering. Probably
for the 10th time. I've even had it replaced too. Just a bad design. The
belt just slips, maybe Phoenix is just too warm. Secondly, a mercury switch
went bad, I think. When I recline or raise my seat, the chair has a mercury
switch that sets the speed to very slow. A safety thing. Somehow it got set
to very slow all the time. I heard a clank then my chair just slowed. The
joystick says Slow on the LED screen even if my seat s down and I'm
sitting up.

I guess the chair is getting old enough for things to star going bad. At
least I can't blame them for these 2 things. I hope they can fix it. I don't
want to go months moth without my good chair.

Greg

[QUAD-L] New Chair?

2010-01-02 Thread Greg
Hopefully soon I can qualify for a new chair. For almost 20 years I've used
mid or front wheel chairs. My very first chair was a rear wheel, belt
driven, 21st Century. It was big, bulky, and pretty fast. Now I'm thinking
of going back to that chair. It's better looking now, though still not
great. It still uses belt drive. The rear wheel is not much bigger than the
front now, not that bike size wheel it used before. The front wheel is a bit
bigger than my mid wheel TDX5 uses. That's good for outside, maybe I wont
get stuck in gravel as often. Though wider tires might not be as good for
indoors. It says it goes 11.6, though with tilt, recline, and seat raiser,
that would slow it down some.

The Permobil X850 Corpus looks cool, best looking power chair I've seen. But
it only does 9 mph. It's just such a cool chair. It's like a mini car.

Maybe in the next year I can get one of these.

Re: [QUAD-L] New Chair?

2010-01-02 Thread Tod E. Santee
Greg,

I think 21st Century still makes the old style chairs with the 20 rear tires.
I had a new chair made in 2005 and RD said they had no plans to discontinue
them (though that WAS 5 years ago).

I find the smaller rear wheels getting me stuck in gravel, soft soil, etc. much
more often than the more narrow big tires. I specifically decided on the
smaller rear tires for just that reason and very quickly was disappointed!
It's either that or the weightdistribution with their group 27 batteries causes
the small, wide tires to dig in more... not sure.

If I was to get another, I'd be asking for the big rear again. (tires, that is)

Best!

Re: [QUAD-L] New Chair?

2010-01-02 Thread Dan
My last two chairs have been 21st century. And I always get the large
20 inch rear wheels. As long as the drive belts are tight, the wheels
don't bog down. Also, I always get the pneumatic tires of course flat
tires are inevitable but Wal-Mart sells the inner tubes for $2.35
apiece. And they are much easier to change than those small drive
wheels. Hell even my PCA's can do it.

one person on this board that I've spoken to over the phone (you know who

Ah, okay... What would I have done differently? Gosh, not gotten in the
car that day when I was in the accident? Stayed in bed? Then I wouldn't have
been there when that drunk driver took his truck, ran the stop sign and ran
over my car...

What else may I have done differently? I think I did the right thing after
they dropped me on the floor- to go home by taxi- discharging myself.
Maybe should have gone directly to a trauma 1 center. I would say continuing
with education is tops...would have probably liked to been more active but
pain, access issues, transportation too precedence. Probably would also be,
if I were to give advice, look for any support you can. Apply for Medicaid
Waivers to get more homecare options right away. Apply for funding for home
modifications, get family educated and on board.. and be a good self-
advocate.. When I was not able to talk well due to injury, could still write.
Having someone with me during doctors appts was important. And other, is to
avoid going for unneccessary tests to prove to someone that my nerve pain
was real. Okay, just docs using this to make a buck.. and cover themselves
for not listening or working with me, or not being educated in the field
of spinal cord injury.
Probably best recommendation to offer would be to stay away from community
hospitals, and stick with experts in SCI, at almost all costs. Avoid
neurologists, stick with physiatrists. And other thing I did write, keep my
cats as my companions.

May today be the best start for the rest of the year. Advice- make it this
way... we can... one day at a time. Peace to you all---

(Ah.. but you DO know!)

Anyway, the question was this:

For those of you with more living experience as quads, what would be the
one thing you would do different
or maybe wish?you would have done/or not done over the years??

I took that to mean SINCE Quad-hood. There are several things I can think
of pre-Quad that I might have done differently but had I done any of them,
Quadhood might not even be on my radar (assuming I'd still have radar that
 functioned, that is).

I might have missed something as the rules for obtaining a new chair has
changed in the last 5 years. Just ask anyone who has received one. What
you want, you may not get or you may get more. Much depends on how well you
follow the protocol, with your doctor, occupational therapist, the DME's
ATS, they way the order is coded and pre-approval of CMS. I know of some who
were surprised at what they got and others complained. But there is
nothing wrong with starting a list and hoping that your doctor and CMS agrees.

me, he doesn't live far from me, of course I would never go for it, he says
he's 22 years old which is too young for me, not that I would ever be
interested anyway. I'm interested in hearing more about this Devotee term
though, anyone??

hey everybody,
gosh, I'm terribly sorry. As Steve Oldaker said, the qualifying
statement was chances are. I certainly did not mean to stir the pot so to
speak. And as I said, I didn't mean to come across as sounding crass. It's
just that I know some very young people who were doing very foolish things, and
who felt the world is to blame. I was simply trying to say take blame where
blame is due. But then, aren't those wise words to live by anyway?
Please accept my apologies if I've offended anyone. That was not my
intention.

i know, i was the very sober driver of 4 others when my right
rear tire blew out at which point i lost control of the steering, hit the
ditch, rolled 3 times, the roof hit my head really hard on the 2nd roll, and
caused the injury. and no, i was not going over the speed limit...

Yeah I know I haven't been a quad for very long.
And I know I sound a little crass, but remember these words are typed, not
spoken. But there is one person on this board that I've spoken to over the
phone (you know who you are) that can attest to the fact that I'm not crass
when speaking.

Re: [QUAD-L] Term Devotee

2010-01-02 Thread Tod E. Santee
Well, W, Lissette, others...

Believe it or not, I don't think it's really not normal or strange at all.
In fact, it seems quite normal, as long as they don't become too intrusive or
stalkers or anything. Then it's just as criminal as a Lindsey Lohan stalker.

Guys -- we are known to watch anything with big boobs, or blonde hair, or red
hair, or brunettes, or tall women, short women, women in glasses that look like
librarians. Some like really nice feet others like nice hips.

Gals -- you tend toward cowboy-types, rocker-types, the rebel guys, sweeping
blonde hair with icy-blue eyes, or darker hair and light green Irish-looking
eyes, and there's a certain walk that nearly never fails to make ladies' heads
turn and check out the backsides of the Levis.

These devotees are like the Quad-hoppers I mentioned in another thead -- in
fact, they are them, often.

Some people are attracted to anyone of a different race, some only to a
particular race. Sometimes it's our own race, sometimes it's as far from our
own as we imagine.

Apply the same logic to these devotees who are curious in those with any
disability or a specific disability and it isn't much different. I think it's
mostly an issue of human curiosity... we often like to try (or fantasize about
trying) something we know very little about.

The BIG difference comes in that many of of quads are at a physical
disadvantage to a fully AB devotee. He/She might not respect the word No if
an unescapeable situation ever occurred. And some devotees, just like any
other group of people, like nothing more than to have a position of power and
authority over which someone else can't escape.

Just think about it... even when our best love leaves in some rampage over
this or that, we don't *really* know what attitude they'll return with. We
just trust we know them well enough to know the CHANCES are good they'll return
in a reasonable state... not a murder/suicide state of mind.

Best advice: Always, always, always be certain you know someone very well
before you get caught alone in the wrong place at the wrong time! Make sure
family and friends know him/her well, also. They normally aren't as blinded by
love or curiosity as an involved person is.

I agree that FOR ME, a devotee is not my type. But for some... it has worked.
I know one couple who've been together for a few years now!

Best, and SAFE, wishes!

Thanks for the input Tod, I guess it makes sense. I still think it's weird.
Maybe not all devotees are weirdos but I would think most are and I did think
about them maybe feeling power or that maybe most of them have a certain
complex and being with someone disabled helps their complex, I don't know, I
guess for some it could be just a weird attraction. This guy for sure isn't
normal, he says he thinks spasms are hot lol.
