[QUAD-L] seat cushions and pressure sores

2016-08-22 Thread Cviewer62
Has anyone have problems with pressure sores and sliding forward in their
chair?
I recently got a Roho Hybrid Elite seat cushion. For years I have been
using a regular Roho cushion with no problems . The new cushion keeps me
sitting straighter. I didn't realize that I was slouching or leaning to one
side
or another., but now I even feel I am sitting taller.
I have had a Roho for more than 30 years, I never had a pressure sore
while using it For a month or so I used a foam cushion and got a pressure
sore. It took me 6 months in bed but I did get rid of it. Now I am back on my
Roho and thought I was doing fine. I have no pressure sores but feel I am
doing better with the Elite cushion.
When I had a sore I had to stay in bed and keep off my butt. I went to
the wound center every week, then home and back to bed for 6 months before it
was healed. Once I was back on my Roho I got my life back and was able to
get out of the house.
Think positive .,, Rose

Bobbie, Glad to hear that you went to the wound center for your pressure
sore That is something that you do not want to get worse. Call your Dr. or
the staff at the wound center to find out what strength you should take for
your Vitamin. C and Zinc and how often you should take them. Also if you
should take them with meals or not. Next time you go back ask if a nurse will
write down the directions for you. I hope that you will heal quickly and
not have to be in bed for 6 months as I was before my sore was healed. Best

My head use to itch so bad, lots of flakes. I used Crisco or Coconut oil,

nothing helps. I'm up all night trying to scratch my scalp. Like bugs, but
nothings there. Dermatologist gave me samples of itch free shampoos, but said
everything looks fine. I do not think the cold weather is causing it. Never
has before. My face too, it's like I have loose hairs tickling my face.

Can allergies cause that? My left eye is watering bad for 3 days now. I
flushed it with Visine, and a saline wash, and nothing. The outside edge gets
crusty, goopy, and feels like I may have scratched it rubbing it so much.

[QUAD-L] something else

2015-12-23 Thread Cviewer62
I fell out of my wheelchair on Sunday. No blood, No skin breaks. My
husband came home about 1/2 an hour later and put me back in the chair. Monday
I
had swelling on my knee and a lot of black and blue so we went to the
hospital and found out my leg is broken just below the knee and above a rod
that
was put in years ago. They ( the Doctors) could not operate or put a cast
on it so I have some kind of immobilizer that is soft with velcro straps.
Then they said to get a leg extender for my chair. Of course none of the
supply places have them in stock. We did rent a chair with a leg extension but
it did not work out because the chair had ridged arm rest and the
extension did not come up high enough and the other foot rest was too long. I
am a
T9 Para that could stand a pivot. Now I cannot stand as I cannot put weight
on my left foot as it has to be elevated all the time until it heals (2-3
months). My husband found a left leg extension for my chair on ebay and
ordered it. The problem is that the extension is in Calif. and we are on the
east coast. I don't know how long it will take to get here. Meanwhile he
has to transfer me without my foot touching the floor. So far we put pillows
on the floor and a plastic bag so my foot will slide but I am afraid my leg
will twist and cause more problems or is the pillows and plastic a good
idea? For an extension now he has made a wooden frame, covered with towels
and ties my leg on it to keep it from sliding off.It is big and awkward and
scary to use. I hate to think of just staying in bed until this leg heals as
I worry about pressure sores. When I am in bed I have a regular mattress
but when in my chair I have a Roho but I am waiting for a replacement on
that.I sent my old Roho back to the factory and they called and said it
could not be repaired. The company I bought it from has changed hands and the
sales rep. is on vacation.
I asked the Dr. about the swelling on my leg, black and blue etc. and he
told me it will look worse before it gets better.
Hope all of us have a Merry Christmas and a Healthy New Year. Thanks for
letting me vent. Rose

All of this becomes super scary for me, because Alzheimer's runs and

[QUAD-L] air pump

2015-01-13 Thread Cviewer62
Hi all, I recently bought the Roho LTV seat cushion. The cushion is fine
but the air pump does not work. I use my regular Roho cushion air pump and
that works. Does anyone else have a problem with the LTV pump? I did not
want to spend the money to send it back (the pump, not the cushion) so I
just use my other pump.
The LTV cushion works great when you want to transfer to a fixed,
stationary seat and then go back to a regular Roho.
I am glad the air pump works on both the regular as well as the LTV seat
cushion. Rose

Bob, How often do you use Peristeen?

In a message dated 7/27/2014 10:04:11 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time,

Hi Meredith,

Here is an article I wrote for New Mobility magazine about the Peristeen
system. http://www.newmobility.com/2014/04/peristeen-for-bowel-management/

As a survey of one, I've been using Peristeen since November 2013. As
far as the A.D. issue, I'm a T10 para
so I'm just below the cutoff for A.D., but it is a very good question and
one I would discuss with your doctor.

The way you go about getting it is to either ask your doctor and/or nurse
practicioner about it or write an email
to the folks at Peristeen, made by Coloplast:
_us-peristeen@coloplast.com_ (mailto:us-perist...@coloplast.com) Or call Rita
Ward at Coloplast at:
(612) 337-7856

The entire system is small and fits into a bag the size of shaving kit
and/or small woman's purse. I travel with my
Peristeen system, it fits easily into my suitcase and/or carry on bag on a
plane.

It is designed to be used while sitting upright--on the toilet. I use the
system while sitting on a standard commode.
I have full use of my hands and arms--I find it very easy to use. Setting
up the system from the box takes about a
minute. It takes about another minute and a half to fill up the water bag
with tap water, attach the rectal catheter.
The next step is inserting the catheter, filling up the catheter balloon
and adding water to the colon via squeezing
a a rubber hand pump. On average the entire process--filling the water
bag with water through pumping water into
the colon (bowel)--takes me about 4-5 minutes. Once water is in the
colon, the catheter is removed and it is a matter of
sitting and waiting--I find it a good time to catch up on reading or
listening to my favorite podcasts. Time to empty
the colon (bowel) varies from about 20 minutes to 40 minutes. For me it
takes 30 minutes, like clockwork. Everybody
is different, for some reason I find I empty in three waves about
10-minutes apart. It still amazes me how much
comes out--at least 3-4 times more than I've ever managed to empty with
digital stim, suppositories, or using
standard enemas.

Again in my survey of one I give the system a 10. Since starting using
Peristeen in November I have had zero
accidents and (despite risking Murphy's law) for the first time since I
was injured 29 1/2 years ago, I don't think or
worry about bowel accidents. I also feel much better. As I wrote earlier
today, I recently had my yearly KUB
(kidney, ureter, bowel) X-ray to check for kidney stones. Over the past
decade or so these X-rays always included
a statement by the radiologist that said something like difficult to see
because of stool, meaning I was full of
s#%t. My urology nurse practicioner showed me my current X-ray and
compared it to a previous X-ray and said
you can see that you have much less stool in this X-ray. In my old
X-rays it was easy to see that my entire colon
(bowel) was full, even though I had done a bowel program the morning of
the X-ray. In the current X-ray it is easy to
see that the 2nd half of my bowel (1/2 of my transverse colon and my
entire descending colon=2 1/2 feet of colon) is
empty.

Probably way more than you wanted to know but really important to me.

(checking for stones in kidney,
ureters, bladder) X-ray and my Dr. compared it to my previous ones--in
every previous X-ray there
was a notation much of area is occluded by stool. In this X-ray the
entire 2nd half of my large investing
(bowel) was empty. Before Peristeen I was literally full of s#%t.

sidewalk cracks, as you roll over them. The Roho is less stable for transfers

much more forgiving and cushy over bumps. Another interesting thing about
air cushions is how they are affected by elevation; when I drive from
Phoenix to Flagstaff--an increase in elevation of about 6,000 ft--I have to
let
air out of my cushion or it becomes too hard. There are pros and cons for

FYI, the Roho President monitors this list for any issues and feedback

an hour here and there also eat lots of proteinnuts are a good snacking

I've had a stage 2 sore on my Ishium for over 3 months. Sometimes it Ozzis
clear then it bleeds. I know that bleeding is a good sign.
I got this sore September 25th after siting in a brand new chair for about
5-6 weeks. I we extremely active in this new chair because I was so
very comfortable. I've only been up out of bed once since the above date.
On top of my mattress I lay on a Roho mattress which has served me well
(over 15 years) but now I believe it is time for an alternating pressure pad
with pump to put on top of my mattress. I've been doing quite a bit of
research on different brands and styles. Does anybody have any recommendations
or something to stay away from?

I do not have a SP, I have a Foley. Wed. my primary Dr. sent me to the
hospital. I came out of the hospital today. Not a great way to spend
Thanksgiving. I had chills, fever, and was vomiting. After many tests it was
found
out that I had a UTI. It took that long to get the culture results from the
lab as I had more than 1 infections. I did not know that you would vomit
from a UTI. Now I have to be sure and drink lots of water to keep hydrated.
One sign that I did not pay any attention to was that my urine stunk. So to
all of you be sure and pay attention to your body. Not feeling if your
urine burns is not the only way to tell if you have a UTI. Be sure and drink
and also get plenty of rest.

Now that is strange as SP are suppose to reduce or eliminate infections.
Standing therapy helps to empty the bladder and reduces the chance of
infections, as urine doesn't pool when standing. An acidic bladder also helps
to reduce the chance of infections.

hungry during the day I just snack on a few almonds. Rose

Nan,
I don't think I crafted my response very well. I'm not a believer in
fasting too much when it comes to be a quadriplegic. I guess that's because I
have had problems with hypoglycemia, so I believe more in reducing portions
and trying to minimize meals a day later if I had the larger than normal
meals.

Instead of fasting, you might want to think about doing one of those
liquid meals like Boost or something like that where you still get the proper
amount of protein instead of giving up completely on eating a certain meal on
a certain day.

I hope you're able to achieve some weight loss. Not getting discouraged is
very important. I have found that after reducing portions for a while I
tend not to eat as much as I used to. I have also found is easier to eat less
if I use smaller plates. It is psychological, but it works effectively for
me.

Interestingly enough, I was watching a show a couple of months ago where
the guy was perplexed as to how the previous owners of his house were able
to put plates in their cupboards. He had purchased an extremely old house
and come to find out people didn't use large place like we do now 30 or 40
years ago. Just going out to eat in many restaurants is difficult if you're
the type of person who likes to eat everything on your plate as I was taught
when I was young. Now I force myself to quit whenever I get a little
inkling that I am satisfied. I have found that after about 10 minutes of
become
full and I don't need to beat the rest of that food. Being an individual
who is a penny pincher, I still take home the food, but at least I haven't
overeating.

Good luck.

I have been trying to minimize meals off and on for the last couple of
years. I have managed to loss a pretty sizable amount, but I still have my
mini quad belly. I need to loss a couple of more pounds of my belly so that my
bladder doesn't hurt as much when I sit up. I sometimes eat a big meal for
a day or two and then try to eat a little bit less the next few days.

My greatest accomplishments in the weight loss department have occurred
when I have been able to minimize my carbs significantly. This isn't easy for
us, but it does help a lot. Eating a lot more salad and other vegetables
in place of pasta or bread will help you shed the pounds pretty quickly.

PS I'm having some trouble with microphones again, so there might be a few
more errors than normal.
