Today, in keeping with its commitment to ensure states have the necessary
tools to respond to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) approved an additional six
state Medicaid waiver requests under Section 1135 of the Social Security
Act (Act), bringing the total number of approved Section 1135 waivers for
states to twenty nine. The waivers were approved within days of states’
submitting them, with average approval time taking less than seven calendar
days. The waivers offer states new flexibilities to focus their resources
on combatting the outbreak and providing the best possible care to their
Medicaid beneficiaries. These waivers support President Trump’s commitment
to operating a COVID-19 response that is locally executed, state managed
and federally supported. All Section 1135 approval letters will be posted
here

as
they are issued.

CMS approved waivers for the following states today:

   - New York
   - Colorado
   - Hawaii
   - Idaho
   - Massachusetts
   - Maryland

CMS provides guidance to states on how to apply for Section 1135 waivers
through the Medicaid Disaster Response Tool Kit, which can be found here
.
To further the agency’s efforts, CMS has developed checklists and tools

to
expedite requests and approvals for waivers and other commonly requested
flexibilities. CMS will continue to expeditiously review and approve, as
appropriate, all Section 1135 waivers and other requests that the agency
receives to ensure that we are providing our state partners with the
maximum flexibility they need to care for their Medicaid beneficiaries
during the public health emergency.

These waivers, and earlier CMS actions in response to COVID-19, are part of
the ongoing White House Task Force efforts. To keep up with the important
work the Task Force is doing in response to COVID-19, visit

specific to CMS, please visit the Current Emergencies Website.

However, my daughter and family live in Guam (Military) and they are

Their travel will be military flights to Seattle then commercial to

Now their move might be postponed. So many things cancelled in OK and

Eric,

I am growing much more concerned,. My granddaughter is in the hospital in Guam
(son-in-law is military) They say she has pneumonia but haven’t tested her for
COVID-19. Guam has 3 reported cases. They are waiting to get blood cultures
back. They were to move back to the states the beginning of May and now the
military is restricted from travel until May 11 for now. They will have to self
quarantine when they get back. They were supposed to stay with me for 30 days
and now who knows when I’ll get to see them.

Sorry about what you're currently going through, Lori. I have been there and
it's survivable, but I'm sure that I'm saying something you already know. I'm
super fortunate to have had the same two attendants for something like eight
years now. I'm also fortunate to have had a solid job for over 15 years. Hang
in there. You wouldn't have gotten this far if you were the type that gave up
easily. Then again, I'm pretty sure I have an idea what you've been through, so
I'm not the type to judge. Jeff

[QUAD-L] hello from a new participant in Olney, Maryland

2010-08-17 Thread Dave Krehbiel
I'm a new participant in the forum from Olney, Maryland. I was injured in an
accident at the beach about three years ago, and I'm now a C4/C5
quadriplegic.

It sure is nice to find a forum dedicated to quadriplegics. I can imagine
that being a paraplegic is a devastating and life-changing injury, but it
seems to me that quadriplegics face problems of an entirely different
magnitude.

I have two primary areas of interest:

Support for Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I am currently using Dragon
NaturallySpeaking 10, and it works pretty well for most things, but I have
questions from time to time. For example, does anyone know how to copy a
block of information from a website and paste it into a document using
Dragon voice commands?

Quality of life issues. So many of the organizations which help those with
spinal cord injuries seem to focus on basic health needs and research and
things like that. I am considering starting an organization which would
focus on quality-of-life issues only. It is nice to stay alive... but it

2010-08-17 Thread Steve Oldaker
Hi Dave,

I am an avid user of Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10. I'm using it now. Here are
the voice commands that I would use to copy a block of information from a
website and paste it into a document:

1. Go to the webpage you want and use the MouseGrid commands to place the
cursor at the beginning of the text you wish to copy.

2. Say mouse mark. It won't look like anything happened, but
NaturallySpeaking now knows its starting point.

3. Use the MouseGrid commands to place the cursor at the end of the text you
wish to copy.

4. Say mouse drag. This will highlight all the desired text.

5. Say copy that.

6. Switch to the document you wish to paste your copied text into and say
paste that.

There may be an easier way, but this works for me. Let me know if you have
any follow-up questions.

As for quality of life issues and supporting organizations, I concur with
Wheelchair on checking first with any local Center for Independent Living.
No need to reinvent the wheel if a really good wheel is available to you.

well it depends on what your operating system you're on and what is your
favorite web browser? I am running Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit edition, Firefox
and Dragon version 10. If you are running under Firefox there are countless
number of add-ins to grab any information that is being displayed in your web

right-click to copy and paste into some other application. Any other questions

Don is right, you won't get much sympathy from us high quads, for myself I
would like to be able to feed myself and get a drink whenever I want to, and
most of all be able to scratch my nose when inches or get that damn off my
neck because I can actually feel that. J

The very best advice that I can give you is the same advice that was given
to me at the Santa Clara rehab: don't let your disability control you, you
control your disability.

Good luck and just go for it

Ian,

You probably won't find much sympathy here from all of us who have much less
physical movement than you have. I'm a c5-6 complete and if I could walk 40
or 50 steps, as you can I'd be doing it every waking minute of the day. I'd
be dancing a quad jig!

But, we're not in your situation, so can't really know the obstacles and
difficulties you face. So, I encourage you to do WHATEVER it takes to
strengthen what you have!

-go to your local gym and see if there's a trainer willing to help.
-check out your nearest university... are they doing any medical/sci studies?
-any OT or PT schools near you?
-post an ad on craigslist for a workout partner/trainer.
-talk to your local newspaper/television station about doing a story about you.

Take control, Ian--you can walk!

Don.

I always have good intentions of exercise / intense strengthening,
whatever you might call it to reach my full potential. But intentions are
easier than actually being consistent. Two of my obstacles are 1 - a full time
job (not complaining) and 2 needing someones help for me to actually do / get
to where I know I can get to.

Neither are an excuse, just obstacles that I need to figure out.

I was injured at 15, now 33. Much time has passed but I know it's still
not too late to be in all reality at least 10x better / physically able than I
am now.

I'm c2 incomplete, right side strongest, use a power chair, with a left
afo and walker and help standing I can walk between 40 and 50 steps at a time.
But can't stand myself or transfer myself / but the potential is clearly there,
much more potential that I can put into words, and too much potential to just
let go.

There's a gym near my home that I know would benefit me greatly but I
would need someone willing to invest their time and energy to help me and for
me it's difficult to ask for that kind of help. A friend who'm I've only know a
few weeks said he would help (I asked him) Still it's difficult for me to go
forward with the gym. Things like him being married gand having kids and make
taking time from his family make it difficult for me to really go through with
it.

On the other end I have a single friend who I asked and he said yes but
he was obviously not interested at all.

Anyway. I know there's a way. But I don't know where to start - my legs
work - my arms work - my abs and back work - but everything needs to and can be
strengthened. But where do I start?

Right now I try to walk once a day (usually 5 days a week) just to
maintain that ability.

I have to improve everything, if it was just biceps or quads or 1 or 2
things it would be less overwhelming. But I know that if I can put it together,
the rewards will greatly be worth the time effort and pain that I invest.

I have a new fes device that I haven't used yet. I hope to make use of
it soon. Any suggestions?

Where should I start? I don't have access to the internet alot so I
can't look up / post as often as I'd like.

Would it help if I videoed my ability and limitations and posted them?
Would anyone be willing to tell me what and how I should work on things?

Anyway, thank you for listening, thank you for your help, please give
me your advice.

Ian

like this group very much, it is informative, constructive,

posts that I have been reading for a few weeks now.

Number one; I used a ROHO cushioned seating system (air cells) it
works wonders, but five months ago I've changed seat cushions (bad
choice) I wanted to see if there was Room for improvements, I believe
that I should have followed the old saying if it ain't broke don't
try to fix it
I went to another seating cushion that had parts that were made out
of hard foam. that was a really bad choice. so now I am paying for
it.

Number two; I drive a minivan for five years now, have not had any
accidents, I am very very careful now more than before. I have driven
six hours and that is the maximum I will drive per day at a time that
way I would not get tired and risk it.
I do like the IDea of a new type of vehicle although they are very
expensive specially the convertible that I want PT cruiser.
hopefully business will pick up and might just be able to get it.

I would like to someday personally meet all of you. it is great to
have many friends, I will continue this posts later on today. For
now this is all I will write, I have a few things that take care of
and I will be back, you guys rock!

[QUAD-L] Hello Angelique

2006-07-02 Thread Lori Michaelson

Most definitely welcome to the list, Angie! It sounds as if you were only 13 years old when you acquired your injury. I had just turned 15 when I was in a motor vehicle accident with my first boyfriend. A tractor-trailer pullout in front of us after dark but the exact details on the exact cause of what happened is pretty much a mystery.

I finished high school and then went on to college. I got my baccalaureate degree in 1988 and began working the fall of 1988 at an Independent Living Center. About four years after that I was diagnosed with syringomyelia and had to have several surgeries that put me out of commission and I stopped working. But I certainly haven't stopped living! My days are completely filled with one thing or another and I never have enough time to do all that I want to do!

I have been very fortunate to have some wonderful people come into my life. Especially because I lost both of my parents around the time of my accident. Separate incidents altogether.

My current husband and I met on the Internet in late 1995 and were married in 1997. I have to hand it to you to live in such a cold state! I lived 21 years of my 26 years as a quad in upper New York State and I hated the cold. I am now in southern Arizona and I love it!

You will receive this note twice because I sent it to both your e-mail address as well as the quad list.

Welcome again!

facts, at least up to 2001 on the working poor in N.O.

Center on Urban Metropolitan Policy
Rewarding Work: The Impact of the Earned Income Tax Credit in Greater New Orleans
"Despite a great deal
of public and policy interest in the working poor and working families,
particularly in the aftermath of welfare reform, there is little
understanding of who the working poor are and where they live. Families may
claim an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) if they are working but not earning
more than roughly 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Therefore, this survey uses EITC receipt as a
measure of the number and location of low-income working residents in a
metropolitan area. This New Orleans survey is one of a series looking at the
EITC and its value to 27 regions around the country. Using IRS data, this
survey mapped the geographic distribution of the EITC to help these regions
better understand where working poor families in their areas live. This survey confirms that working
families live throughout the New Orlea! ns metropolitan area, and that the
EITC is an important source of income for these families and their
jurisdictions."

This disaster surpasses any know disaster in the last 300 years, when you
consider
the damage and loss of life, when all is said and done. No one could have
imagined
the destruction of this hurricane affecting the populations of 3 neighboring
states.

But this disaster also demonstrates another important fact. This country
could not
handle a terrorist attack that damaged 3 states like this hurricane. We seem
to have
spent our money on scaring gray haired ladies at the airport with body cavity
searches, instead of defending our borders.

One could also argue that people should not live near major cities that would
be targets of terrorist actions. Once again, this would affect those unable
to move
to higher surroundings The poor.
Best Wishes
W

that'll happen. I'm not bitter or mean or in pain!
 ! or
sleepy or anything else you might blame on me. i AM however, dissappointed that the people in those under the sea slums don't try very hard to get out and do something positive with their lives. you think they can't get a manual labor job and move out of there to a safer slum somewhere? you think they HAVE to stay thereand live like they do? you think no relative or friend anywhere in the country wouldn't help them move out and start a new life above ground somewhere? I'm a little curious as the where the big water trucks are - the military has lots of them, the dairies have nothing but big tankers that could be filled with water and driven right to most of these people. where are they? they really need my dollar a quart fufu water? i don't think so. we have government agencies dedicated to these types of rescues, paid for by you and me - we've already given much more than 5 10 or 20 bucks. if i had a tanker !
 ! truck,
i'd fill it with water and drive it there - a few quarts just isn't the right solution. and if we allow those low parts of town to be rebuilt and reinhabited - WE are fools. yes I'm compassionate - let's get them out of there and get them relocated to a safer place. this shouldn't be as formidable task as we are seeing on the news. something is very wrong in our government paid rescue agencies.[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Who you going to help Stunt?
According to youanybody that isn't prepared doesn't deserve you're help.

And I guess the state of Arkansas should close down too, we're going to get several tornados this year and you never know when another K5 will hit us like a few years ago when it wiped out several towns and was classified as a disaster area.

Bleedin Heart, you got me all wrong Stunt.

You are really off the wall with this.
You can bleed from your heart all you want, but it won't stop people
from NOT being pro-active. That IS my point. People MUST take basic
measures for their survival instead of expecting someone ELSE to be
reasponsible for them.
EVERYBODY should have 1 week min. of non perishable food and water.
NOBODY should be living below sea level in Hurricane alley. NOBODY!
THAT is not a mistake, it is lack of commonsense.
The State should have closed it down decades ago.
While the media's main focus has been N.O. the widespread destruction
elsewhere is getting very little air time.
For all those who were at the mercy of others my deepest symapathies.
For those who could have left but chose to stay... They should have
prepared themselves, and the City combined with the State should have
been better prepared to deal with it.
If that is seen as lack of compassion by you, that is your opinion.
If a tornado hits me, a tornado hits me.
I won't be blaming anybody.
I'll be doing what I can to help.
I'll also include them in my prayers.
But I'm still an old fashion American who believes in being
reasponsible instead of playing the blame game.

ok i see we are all emotion and no common sense here. i don't mean they are staying this week because they arelazy, i'm saying they aren't too smart watching hurricanes blow in all over the place the last 2, 3, or 4 years while living under the sea. well, that's cute BUT - looking at the medical advances - even the industrial revolution jumping us from the middle ages to a very advanced society speaks differently. i AM curious at parts of the world that continue to live in the stone age though. they don't have to figure out HOW to better their status - all they need to do is get up and follow directions. if the starving people can't drill water wells - with help of course - and learn to grow crops and support themselves, what exactly is the problem? being tied to crappy parts of the earth that can't support life is a nice homey concept but if phoenix suddenly turned into a place that couldn't sustain life - i'd move. i'd camp out, i'd carry groceries., i'd pick fruit, i'd GROW fruit, i'd shovel manure - but i would do what it takes to survive.if i fould i had chosen a place that was dangerous or hit by lightning often, i'd move again. i'd preserv!
 e my
family by legal means. i would NOT depend on taking food from you to keep myself alive. if i did get hit by lightning, i'd appreciate any help to get out of there and find a new life but i would definately move. i know 'that's easy for me to say'. yes it is, i did just that 30 years ago to get out of mighigan where it freezes and i would do it again in a minute if my home was destroyed and in regular danger of distruction by anything.
