Sorry for the verbose title. If I put a debian-9 VM in true fullscreen
in XFCE, I get a short hang, then the window disappears. The VM then
goes 'yellow', and while I can xl console into the VM, I lose all windows.

I am using the nomachine client to connect to a remote (linux) desktop.
Normally, it grabs the keyboard input until you press a shortcut like
ctrl+alt+k to release it or ctrl+alt+m to minimize the remote desktop which
also releases the keyboard.
