Try setting the pci_strictreset to false in the preferences of the target vm.

[qubes-users] Bug - Qubes fails to boot if a USB Audio device is connected to the PC

2017-01-08 Thread Grzesiek Chodzicki
I know that this sounds rather bizarre, but my Qubes instance consistently gets
stuck after GRUB menu if a USB Audio device is connected to the computer. So
far I have a 3/3 repro rate on that. What type of logs/information should I
gather from my machine in order to troubleshoot that?
XL dmesg does print a RMRR warning about USB controllers

Qubes 3.2
Kernel 4.8.12-12
I use a sys-usb AppVM with all controllers hidden from Dom0.

Hello Andrew,

The issue still occurs after disabling autostart of the sys-usb AppVM.

GPU passthrough should work out of the box now so that's doable although I'm
afraid You're going to need a second monitor for that to work.

As for the hubs, this might be tricky without a large number of separate USB
controllers.

Have You tried using StandaloneVMs to host Docker? StandaloneVMs don't use
copy-on-write afaik so it should be at least a little faster.

I emailed my bank and asked for a list of domains used by their webapp. They
were reluctant at first but after I explained what domain whitelisting is they
provided me with a list of URL addresses and added a note explaining what
exactly are specific domains needed for. I don't know if your bank will be as

I currently use a custom mini-ITX PC built inside Lian-Li TU100B. Not exactly a
NUC but the entire PC is smaller than my cat so pretty small.

Here's a pretty good picture showing how small this case is:

Hit me up if You want to know the rest of my PC specs.

Check whether the network shares a controller with another device (such as the
card reader). If it does, assign the second device to the sys-net.
If that fails run (in dom0) qvm-prefs -s sys-net pci_strictreset false

Apple License prohibits running OSX on hardware not manufactured by Apple (even
in a VM) so OSX support in Qubes is probably in notgonnahappenland as legally,
only people running Qubes on Macs would be able to install it.

[qubes-users] qvm-usb fails if sys-usb template is set to fedora-24-minimal

2017-02-03 Thread Grzesiek Chodzicki
qubes-usb-proxy not installed in VM is thrown in dom0 terminal after running
qvm-usb -a if sys-usb uses minimal fedora 24 template. Necessary packages were
installed in fedora-24-minimal beforehand

Steps to reproduce:
1. Launch fedora-24-minimal terminal
2. sudo dnf install qubes-usb-proxy qubes-input-proxy-sender (or switch to root
beforehand if sudo not installed)
3. Shutdown fedora-24-minimal
4. Shutdown sys-usb
5. Change sys-usb template to fedora-24-minimal (qvm-prefs -s sys-usb template
fedora-24-minimal)
6. Launch sys-usb
7. Try attaching any USB device via qvm-usb

Observed behavior:
ERROR: qubes-usb-proxy not installed in VM

Expected behavior:
Device is attached to an AppVM

Additional details:
Switching the template back to regular fedora-24 causes the qvm-usb to work
fine.

[qubes-users] Cloned VMs do not appear in Qubes VM Manager

2017-02-06 Thread Grzesiek Chodzicki
After running qvm-clone somevm somevm2 somevm2 does not appear on the VM list
in Qubes VM manager. somevm2 does appear in the XFCE applications menu.
Restarting Qubes VM Manager does not resolve the issue, however restarting the
physical machine does.

If the monitor is plugged into it then it is utilized. If You're using a laptop
with both integrated and a discrete graphics card You need to install bumblebee
to be able to utilize the discrete card.

Dunno about the interface but youtube plays much more smoothly to me in Chrome
than in Firefox so maybe try switching browsers? As for the acceleration
issues, this more of a nouveau issue than Qubes issue, nouveau drivers are much
slower than their proprietary counterparts.

Best guess here is that the drivers for the integrated GPU aren't included in
the kernel yet.
So far the only device that refused to work under Qubes for me was a Broadcom
Wi-Fi card but that's caused by lack of open-source drivers and not by Qubes
architecture. Everything else worked fine.

Windows has WoW64 mechanism that allows 64 bit systems to launch 32 bit apps,
however there is no mechanism to launch them the other way around. QWT are all
64 bit so You may succeed in launching the machine but You won't be able to

For example doc page on USB devices
https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/usb/

On the bottom of the page there is an information that USB Passthrough and USB
Keyboard functionalities are not available in the Qubes Manager.
However there is GUI Improvements Project Idea in GSoC that aims to implement
these options in the VM Manager so a link to the GSoC page with a brief
explanation, something like: "This feature is not available yet in Qubes
Manager but if you'd like to help implement it, and you're a student then you
can apply for the Google Summer of Code program" and a link to the Project Idea
on the gsoc page.

Try passing entire USB controller to the VM instead of the single device.

According to the nouveau page support for Pascale architecture would require
Nvidia to release firmware blobs (something they haven't done yet) so either
install the proprietary driver in dom0 or switch over to the integrated GPU

You installed RDP client in the WIndows HVM (which allows Windows HVM to
control other machines, not the other way around), you need to install RDP
server in Windows HVM, install the client in another AppVM, allow networking
between the two and then launch the client.

Or for the code to be backported to older kernels.

[qubes-users] Tip: Restoring functionality of Windows AppVMs after a crash or forced termination

2017-03-07 Thread Grzesiek Chodzicki
After a Windows AppVM running in Seamless Gui mode crashes it often fails to
connect to qrexec agent at subsequent boot causing the user to be forced to
kill the AppVM which causes the machine to fail to connect co qrexec agent
which causes a spiral of misery. Here's how to fix that:

1. Disable Seamless GUI and enable debug mode of Windows VM
2. Start Windows VM
3. In the VM window You'll see the Safe Mode prompt. This prompt is the real
cause of the issue as the 30 second timer prolongs the boot process which in
turns causes qrexec to timeout. Select "Start Windows normally.
4. In Windows AppVM launch Command Prompt as Administrator
5. Use following commands in the Commands Prompt: "bcdedit /set {bootmgr}
displaybootmenu no" (no quotes) and "bcdedit /set {default} bootstatuspolicy
ignoreallfailures" (no quotes)
6. Shutdown Windows machine
7. (optionally) change how long the qrexec waits for connection from the
default 60 seconds to 120 seconds
8. Enable Seamless GUI back and disable debug mode

Your Windows VM should start normally after a crash now.

Create another sys-net VM (set it as NetVM not AppVM), attach the second NIC to
it, then create another sys-firewall set it to use the sys-net2 as its NetVM
and then set chosen appVMs to use sys-firewall2 as their NetVM.

try sudo nano /etc/qubes.guid.conf and add audio_low_latency = true; parameter
to the VM used for movie watching (or add it to global variables).
Alternatively, install Google Chrome (Not Chromium) and use that.

You'll probably need to download appropriate codecs from the RPM Fusion repo. I

[qubes-users] Tip: Adding arbitrary apps to DispVM Applications menu

2017-03-11 Thread Grzesiek Chodzicki
How to add custom applications to DispVM appmenu:

1. Install the required app in the TemplateVM upon which your DispVM depends
(fedora-23/24 by default)
2. Shutdown the TemplateVM
3. In Dom0 run qvm-create-default-dvm
4. At this point your app can be launched in DispVM, to confirm launch Xterm in
DispVM and start your app from there. Now we are going to add an entry for it
in the Applications menu
5. Go to /usr/local/share/applications
6. Create a new .desktop file for your app using following (example) syntax:

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Type=Application
Exec=sh -c 'echo  | /usr/lib/qubes/qfile-daemon-dvm qubes.VMShell
dom0 DEFAULT red'
Icon=dispvm-red
Terminal=false
Name=DispVM:
GenericName=DispVM:
StartupNotify=false
Categories=Network;X-Qubes-VM;

7. go to /etc/xdg/menus/applications-merged
8. Edit the qubes-dispvm.menu using any editor
9. Under add another line containing the name of your .desktop file
(so it looks like this):

qubes-dispvm-firefox.desktop
qubes-dispvm-xterm.desktop
yourdesktopfilehere

10. Your custom menu entry should appear on the Applications list now

Andrew - Frankly, this should be available within the GUI, should I add that to
Documentation and/or create a ticket?

[qubes-users] Re: Tip: Adding arbitrary apps to DispVM Applications menu

2017-03-12 Thread Grzesiek Chodzicki
Unfortunately, I don't know how to do that in KDE, the last time I used it was
around Qubes 3.0 release.

If somebody uses multipleDVM templates the easiest solution would be to add
multiple entries in the Application Menu.

Personally I believe we should have a GUI for that for the same reason we
should have a GUI for qvm-prefs, guid.conf and several other configuration
mechanisms: so that Qubes is easier to use for non-technical users. Personally,
I don't mind editing this stuff from command line, but I know a lot of people
who would be turned off by that.

I planned to add this to the "DispVM Customization" article as I assume this is
the first place a user would look.

Switch the sys-net and sys-firewall back to fedora template, Start the fedora
template and then execute sudo xl console fedora024, that should give you
access to the terminal and then try sudo dnf history undo last (dunno if that
will actually work but it's worth a try).

Out of pure curiosity. Does the shutdown still take such a long time if You
manually shutdown sys-net, sys-usb and every other VM that holds a PCI device?
If yes set pci_e820_host to false in qvm-prefs of those VMs. Worked for me.

It's less convenient (every StandaloneVM has to be manually updated instead of
updating just the template) and it'll eat your drive space much faster.

I just checked the Minifree website. Although the premise is really nice
(firmware-free dual CPU workstation, server or laptop) the 6-month lead time,
the price overhead and mediocre specs are a big turnoff. And, just like Purism
did earlier, the price overhead makes it seem like privacy is a privilege of
the rich.
Minifree's workstation configuration that comes the closest to my PC costs over
twice as much with much slower CPU, slower RAM and slower SSD.

Nvidia 10 series GPUs are not yet supported by nouveau driver. If possible
disable it in UEFI (switch to Intel iGPU).

[qubes-users] Tip: How to speed up QubesOS shutdown

2017-03-18 Thread Grzesiek Chodzicki
I've experienced this issue myself and I saw some people complaining about it
on the mailing list. Sometimes Qubes takes forever to poweroff.

The issue is caused by the fact that for some unknown reason machines with PCI
devices attached take forever to shutdown and sometimes need to be manually
killed from within VM Manager. After manually killing them, the system will
shutdown normally.

So, here's the fix:

In Dom0 run qvm-prefs -s sys-net pci_e820_host false

Repeat that for sys-usb and any other machine that holds a PCI device.

Your system should shut down normally after this.

No, I don't know how or why this works but I know that it solved the issue on
my machine. Explanation welcome. I'll add this to documentation once we have a
confirmation that this is 100% reproducible.

Yes, I did try that, this is how I found out that on my system it is not
possible to cleanly shut down VMs that hold PCI devices. If I try shutting down
sys-net the VM Manager hangs for a few minutes, then the entire system stops
responding then the machine gets killed, then VM manager throws an exception
and then system becomes responsive again. After setting pci_e820_host to False
I can cleanly shutdown sys-net and sys-usb just like any other VM.

It gets killed as usual, no error messages. It's the qvm-shutdown that doesn't
work properly.

Enable Debug, Disable Seamless GUI and then mash F8 as soon as the OS window
appears, enter either Safe Mode with Networking or Last Known Good
Configuration and then do a clean shutdown from within a VM. Helped me several
times.

Did you attach any PCI devices to the Windows VM? I've noticed that if a PCI
device was attached at any point to a Windows VM and detached afterwards the VM
will not boot unless said device is attached again.

Have You tried using an external GPU enclosure with Thunderbolt connector?
Should give about 85% of the GPU performance. Thunderbolt by itself is DMA
capable but using IOMMU You should be able to isolate it from the rest of the
Qubes system. Keep in mind though that Qubes by default disables hotplugging
DMA devices (Thunderbolt, Firewire, Express Card) so in order for the GPU to be
recognized it needs to be plugged before boot.

Hopefully, the actual rendering will be performed by the physical GPU located
in the GUI domain.

I did a similar thing with my sound card that requires proprietary Windows only
drivers to operate.
First, check whether VT-d is available and enabled on your laptop with xl
dmesg|grep VT-d
Second, identify the number of available USB controllers with sudo lspci|grep
USB. If you have more than one controller, assign it to Windows HVM.
Within Windows HVM install USB controller driver (if it's a USB 3.0 or later)
and then install drivers for the headset (if required).
I am able to use the soundcard in the Windows HVM with no problems so you
should too. Remember to enable VT-d in BIOS/UEFI first.

IIRC secondary GPU passthrough won't work on laptops because the discrete GPU
is a render device and not a full display device (it's not directly connected
to the laptop display or the video outs, instead it's framebuffer is copied to
the framebuffer of the integrated GPU that handles the actualy physical
displays) Copying the framebuffer between VMs with minimal latency sounds
challenging. Although I remember one guy on this group that successfully passed
through an AMD GPU to a Windows VM and was able to play games in the VM. This
was a desktop PC though.

Did the same thing to my machine once. Switched over to a PS/2 keyboard

You need to passthrough a USB controller to the VM and then plug a soundcard

I had the same problem a few months ago. If you have a PS/2 port on your

Qubes most definitely supports PS/2 keyboards as that's how I have mine hooked
up. But in order for a simple passive adapter to work the keyboard itself must
support PS/2 transmission mode (totally different from USB mode). Try using a
native PS/2 keyboard or buy a mechanical keyboard as these not only support
PS/2 transmission mode but also come with PS/2 adapters by default.

Highly depends on the use case and budget. SO, a few questions first:
 - Does it have to be prebuilt or do You want to build it yourself?
 - Do you plan on using it for GPU-intensive tasks?
 - How much do you care about the looks/size/portability of your machine?
 - DO you already own some PC components?
 - What's your budget?

Personally, I wouldn't risk X299 or Ryzen platforms. You can safely go with
Intel X99 and it should work out of the box. The question is, how beefy
does the workstation need to be? On X99 you can go as high as 128GB of ECC
RAM and up to 18 core Xeon.
Aside: please keep the qubes-users group cc'ed.
