[RBW] Re: Saddlebag Support Suggestions.
I think at some point it makes a lot more sense to just put on a light rear rack like the Tubus Fly (341g) or Vega. When not being used I think it looks alot better than an empty bagman or Marks rack. Allows some panniers as needed for grocery runs. Now having said that I like to keep a couple bikes rack free, and will throw on an unsupported carradice during the winter, mainly in order to carry fairly light stuff like extra layers. Once set up the racks can come on and off pretty fast, although I never seem to do that. I just choose a different bike. -Dave On Monday, May 11, 2015 at 1:49:23 PM UTC-4, David Banzer wrote: I'd like to run a larger saddlebag on my Redwood for longer rides/short tours/commuting/grocery runs. I think from selection and ad copy on Rivendell's website, you can see Grant leans toward tough over cushy and light. But I sure most riders go for flat resistance above all else. I'm also fairly certain Gatorskins are the number one selling tire out there. A sort by popularity search on biketiresdirect supports my theory. https://www.biketiresdirect.com/search/training-recreation-road-tires I know many people who will choose puncture resistance over ride quality. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. This is what I did. [RBW] Re: Combining small Nitto rack with Tektro hanger?
Reviving an old thread that I found useful last night... I managed to mount the Nitto Mini rack to a Hunqapillar fork that, because of brake shudder, requires the Tektro brake hanger that mounts to the fork crown. The rack and the hanger need to coexist in the fork crown hole. However, the hanger changes the angle of the rack such that the stays don't align with the fork's braze-ons (not even close) This was my solution: Step 1: Dremel out the recess in the Tektro hanger so that the knuckle on the Nitto rack's mounting stud recesses into the Tektro hanger. The toothy washer is still required behind the brake hanger. Step 2: Put the rack into a bench vice and trim the mounting stud by maybe 50mm Step 3: Find the shortest recessed allen nut you can (from an old sidepull brake), trimming it with a hacksaw if necessary. This will replace the nylock nut that comes with the rack. Step 4: Test fit. Bend the rack's mounting stud a bit allowing the stays to better align with your fork's braze-ons or p-clamps. It shouldn't take much bending. Done! I considering doing something with a Mark's rack but I already had the Nitto Mini and am happy with the results. Now my question is: for those in countries where you drive on the right, which side do you put your light on, if you have to sacrifice a little tire blockage on the other side? Left so that those coming at you and turning left will see you better? Right so that those turning on to your road from the right will see you? Does it really matter? I've got one bike with a centered light and one on the left, but then I saw a picture of Jan's bike with a light on the right and I know there is nothing on his bike that is not well thought out, unlike mine, where things get thrown places all the time without a real consideration for why or how. Re: [RBW] Thumbies or Bar ends?

Our Quick Cage will work fine on your seat post on any trail. Our cages have been raced on and off road for almost twenty years now and the design has allowed cyclist to go long distances with confidence and function not designed into their frames. As a case in-point, my good friend Dan Hensley just took first place in the single speed category of the Trans Continental Divide race using two Quick cages, one on either side of his ridge forks holding 24oz bottles and he never lost one. We make all of our cages here in the USA and we can hold bottles from 16oz all the way up to 64oz. When you hit 40oz of fluid you don't want to bolt a cage on to your frame to hold that weight as it will, over time ,fatigue the metal around the lugs due to the vibration and they will fail leaving your bike compromised and not so good to ride... We use our patented block and strap mounting method to spread the weight out and yet firmly hold the load without damaging your frame. Make sure your frame is clean and the mating surface of the block is clean when installing and everything should work just fine. The other thing that is nice with our cages is that if you don't need them they come off easily. In closing, I made this cage because my GT RST 1 Team circa 1994 did not have two waterbottle brackets for cages and at the time there was no Camel Back goin on so, I needed to take water with me and the seat post was the only space open for me to use so...that's the origin of the Quick Cage and it still works today. [RBW] MUSA knickers and eating bacon!
On the flip side of this, I just saw a documentary about plant based diets. The scientists were saying that eating animal products causes skyrocketing cancer stats in animal eating populations. This is what upsets me about hearing about these diets - no one agrees and each side has proofs to back up their arguments. In the meantime, I get lost in the whorl of confusion and just toss my hands in the air and eat whatever. But it would be nice to lose 15-20 lbs, as I am middle aged now and not as trim as when I was younger. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Two Fish Strap on Bottle Cage?
I probably sounded sarcastic when I asked my question, and sorry if so. But my question is serious: what are the step by steps to keeping the Twofish cage from rotating on a seat tube? I've tried all sorts of add-on cages, and the TF is the best -- *except* that I couldn't keep it from rotating under a 28 oz bottle. Not for seat tube? Wet surfaces before mating? Clean I understand. If I can get one to work properly, I'll buy at least 2 more. Thanks. I wrote a few days ago: *Robert: If I can discover how to strap a TwoFish to my seat tube (not seat post!) so that it doesn't rotate when I remove the bottle, I'll buy another one to replace the one I sold. In all but one crucial thing I found it the ideal solution to stupidly having a frame built with only down tube bottle cage mounts.* *What is the trick to mounting it securely to a seat tube? Can you describe clearly (imagine you are talking to someone slightly dimwitted and with no mechanical talent -- details, in short, simple phrases) so that it be so securely mounted as to hold a 64 oz or 40 oz full bottle without rotating when the bottle is removed? (Again, seat tube, not seat post.) I could not get the one I owned for a couple of years to stay put; 28 oz bottles.* *FWIW, I've tried many other clamp on substitutes and even if they didn't rotate, they were unsatisfactory in other ways. * On Tue, May 5, 2015 at 1:36 PM, Robert Studdiford studdif...@gmail.com wrote: Hello Ginz and the Talk Group, Im Robert Studdiford, President of Twofish Unlimited. Haha. Could be. When I got in the debate, some folks from back East pointed out that deers randomly jumping out of the woods and into you are a big safety risk, so you should run the lamp on the right to see more of what's happening off the road to the right. I can't say I was convinced that the argument was compelling. Some others said that they can't handle having the QR lever and the light connectors on the same side, that their fingers get all tangled with one or the other. I would think as long as a bag or the front wheel doesn't obstruct the beam, that it really is splitting hairs as Bill says. The beams of the latest dynamo lights are very impressive and I would think mounting position shifted by a few inches (because that really is all it is) shouldn't matter. For visibility to motorists, I think reflective fabric/tape does the job. David Chicago On Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at 2:58:02 PM UTC-5, Bill Lindsay wrote: Haha. Could be. For what it's worth, I put mine on the right side 'cause I'm right handed. [RBW] MUSA knickers and eating bacon!
I just swung by RivHQ on my way from SFO to Arcata (as if it's on the way; made the whole family make the pilgrimage with me). Rode the little Clementine and it's a blast! But the really fun news for me is that after spending 4 months living the eat-bacon-don't-jog -life, I have a younger body. Both Erin and I have lost 15-20 pounds each. I have always wanted MUSA knickers but whenever I tried them on, shall we just say they weren't flattering. But no longer! I slipped on a pair of smalls, emerged from the dressing stall, and Erin said, hey! Those don't look too bad! In fact, they look good! I think you should get 'em. About 10 minutes later, Erin was trying a pair on and decided to get some, too! So any of you out there are like Erin and me, meaning have put on some pounds here and there in your 40's and 50's and have gotten to the point where you're loosening belts and getting bigger and bigger clothes...give the bacon life a try ! We both feel healthier andike we are finally eating totally fresh good food. Thanks grant! RCW PS. Erin's dad is not the proud owner of a MUSA moleskin Father's Day shirt and a matching stripey pirate shirt. That being said, I think I have a better chance just sticking with the built-in loops on my Brooks saddle plus a stand-off vs. trying to add a rear rack to support the bag, because on the subject bike, a 60cm XOXO, the bag will barely make contact with a rear rack when hung from the saddle, unless the rack can be made to sit pretty high above the rear wheel. Does anyone have experience with the Nitto NR-20 or NR-21 ( http://store.somafab.com/ninrrebagsu1.html)? It looks like that may sit higher based on the rear canti mounts and in that it's specifically meant as a rear bag support. -Jeff Silver Spring, MD -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Compass Loup Loup Pass 650Bx38
Wow, this thread got resurrected from the dead... If I had one parting thought about the LoupLoups, I have reduced the pressure somewhat and it seems to help the flat resistance, and reduces blowoffs, which seem to be a feature of my Soma Weymouth rims I have on my Custom. [RBW] Nitto Light Mount: Side question.
I love the light mount http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/lt06r.htm featured on the front. Like most things Nitto, it seems pricey for what it is, but I'll bet it does what it does better than anything else. I always struggle with light mounts on front racks that don't have a good tab for it. Re: [RBW] Re: Combining small Nitto rack with Tektro hanger?
I fit a Tektro brake hanger and Nitto M12 to my KOM fork. I took the opposite approach, and filed down the knuckle on the rack's mounting stud to fit inside the brake hanger. The M12 is stainless, so I'm not worried about the exposed brass and steel. On Wed, May 13, 2015 at 9:24 AM, Ginz theg...@gmail.com wrote: Reviving an old thread that I found useful last night... I recently picked up a Bagman with quick-release feature for my Carradice Camper LF, and have also been a bit concerned with pushing the max weight capacity (10kg). I've considered trying to add struts similar to those that were included with the Bagman 2, which I believe is discontinued, but still pictured/available in the smaller Sport size here: https://www.benscycle.com/p-17-carradice-bagman-2-qr-support-sport.aspx I'm not sure if that model was never made in the Expedition size for the larger bags, but I can't find anything on it. I was thinking of seeing if I could re-purpose some other rack struts or fabricate my own to provide similar additional support. It looks like that Bagman 2, with the extra struts, had the same max weight capacity of 10kg, so I'd have to test any such solution to see how stable it feels. I suppose the question is what exactly are you trying to accomplish in supporting a large bag? Are you trying to offset the bag from your saddle, make it easier to attach/remove from your bike, or keep it from rubbing the rear tire/brakes/fender, or a combination of the three? -Jeff Silver Spring, MD -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
