2017-06-14 Thread Ian A
Looks like there is room for full-coverage fenders with that set-up.
Although, I expect you'll want to put the Ralphs back on when the snow
flies.

I now have a number of rides on Hetres (584x41) and they float along. What
surprises me is their ability to deal with really poor condition pavement.
They don't seem to be a fragile tire. Compass know their stuff.

Re: [RBW] Rear hub for Atlantis build: WI or PW?

2017-06-14 Thread Kurt Manley
If you're going to use an XT hub make sure it's an older one. The newer
ones, like others have mentioned, are crap. I shattered the freehub body in
half twice on mine in a matter of a few months. I had it replaced with a
nos older xt that still uses the steel axle. I have tortured those and they
are good. I have another wheelset with LX hubs and they've been ok too but
have not put a tremendous amount of miles on them.

[RBW] Shifting Mystery - Help

2017-06-14 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
I just set up a new cassette, chain and chainrings, but now I'm having some
issues shifting in my lower gears. There is almost no leeway between my bottom
three gears so it's difficult(almost impossible) to line things up correctly
without the chain jumping around. For context, I'm running a 9 speed with a
wide/low double on a Sugino XD crankset with friction shifters. The mystery is
that things were working just fine with the old set up. Should I have gotten a
different cassette? Should I get a longer bottom bracket? Did they give me the
wrong chain? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

My latest build has a Brooks Pro, which I like. But I used to ride the SSM
Regal back in the day, and I liked that saddle a lot. In fact, I recently
picked one up on eBay (white, perforated) for an upcoming build. I also
like the B17, and the Swift. I also don't mind the Belt Fujita, which is
firm like the Brooks Pro. I guess I have a hard ass, butt then again, these

[RBW] Re: Giving up on my Cambium C17

2017-06-14 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
Just some insight on the Cambiums. Having a 35 yr. old B 17 and having
tried the Cambium C 17 and C 19, my thoughts are that Cambiums work better
for heavier riders. I'm now at 206 lbs and the C 17 carved and the C 19
both feel pretty good, though my max rides on both borrowed saddles was 2
hours. I think the Cambium needs a bit of weight to work as intended. The C
15 must be stiff as a hatchet!

The Cambium works well for a lot of touring cyclist around the world,
judging by all the photos on various websites. However, I'll spend my money
next on a Rivet Diablo. Rivet totally backs their work and complaints are
rare and far between.

Cheers,
Bill in Roswell, GA

I'm one of those who finds Brooks b17 shaped saddles comfortable right out of
the box, as well as over time. The shape just works for me, I guess. I actually
never think about my saddles now that I have a Brooks on all my bikes. They
truly disappear for me.
I rode with my friend the other day who spent the last part of the ride out of
the saddle because his butt was hurting so bad. That was the first time in a

Re: [RBW] Re: Rear hub for Atlantis build: WI or PW?

2017-06-14 Thread Keith Muller
If this conversation is about hubs and money is not an object, then let me
throw my two cents in the pot.

I have two bikes with White Industries rear hubs, two bikes with Chris King
classic rear hubs, and one bike with an XT touring hub.

The white industries hubs are great, my only complaint is they seem to really
chew through bearings on the non-drive side of the hub. That's the only
bearing that I've had to replace on those hubs. Great value, beautiful
product.

My favorite has been the Chris King Classic hub. Both of my hubs have the
upgraded stainless drive shell and one piece axle. They are tough and durable.
They are easy to adjust, and the seals on the bearings keep crap out.
Maintenance on the bearings take a special tool, but taking the freehub body
off for cleaning and maintenance only requires simple allen wrenches. Any good
shop will have the king hub tool for the more complicated bearing maintenance.
Price for the King classic hub with upgraded driveshell and axle is north of
$500. But if money isn't an issue, then why not shoot for the moon!

Keith

PS the XT hub is shit! Shit I tell you!

My plan exactly, Jay! nearly the perfect plush all terrain touring tire,
though underbiking a wee bit on technical single track. I've ridden my QB
on a lot of technical single track over the last three+ years with the
Barlow Pass tires and not once had a sidewall issue, which surprises me
given the decomposed granite we have around here.

SS Johnny: At the moment they measure 41mm, but I expect that to grow to
42-43 as they stretch, similarly to the Barlows.

Clarification to my initial post: the skinnier Compass tires I'm comparing
the Snoqualmie to are the Barlow Pass tires.

There are risks, so I'm taking an extra tire, in case one gets slashed beyond

[RBW] Re: Rear hub for Atlantis build: WI or PW?

2017-06-14 Thread Cory Clechenko
Isaac-

I'm in the same position as you - I'm awaiting an Atlantis, and presently
putting together my build (with two wheelsets). I had thought about Phil
hubs for one set of wheels (old XT hubs I already had for the other), but I
went with MI-5s after speaking with Rich. There was no implication of
problems with the Phil hubs, but rather he recommended the MI-5s as a
better choice/value, at least for my situation (650b Atlantis, atlas rims
for that wheelset, 200lbs).

[RBW] Re: Rear hub for Atlantis build: WI or PW?

2017-06-14 Thread Nathan Spratt
I own the PW touring hub, had it for 3 years now. On the way down the coast
on my tour last summer I stopped by PW and had them upgrade the hub to the
latest 11 speed cassette body and change all the bearings, not that I
needed it, I was just in the area. Since then I've put 10,000km on it
without any issues. The latest design of the cassette body allows for user
pawl replacement, and they include an extra set of pawls when you buy your
hub. They said that they made the pawl steel softer than the ratchet ring
steel so that it is an easy wear item to replace. You do need to check the
hubs once a month or two depending on how much you ride, make sure
everything is lubed and tight. There is still a fair bit of internal
resistance when freewheeling, even after 10,000km, but since it's on my
touring bike I don't worry about it. I certainly would not put it on a "go
fast" bike though. The hubs are really heavy.

The only issues I've heard with the White are that the bearings are so-so
and need replacement sooner than later. One could have the best of both
worlds by replacing the bearings in the WI hub with PW spec bearings. I do
like the idea they make the pawls out of S2 steel, I haven't heard any
complaints about the ratchet mech in the WI hubs, so that's a good thing.

[RBW] Re: Giving up on my Cambium C17

2017-06-14 Thread Joe Bernard
I've purchased several used B17s and they were all comfortable immediately.
Every body-to-saddle relationship is different, but I've never found that the
used shape interferes with mine.

Someone else mentioned adapting to new ones right away, which I'm sure is
possible if "right away" means lots of long rides. I'm a bit of a short-ride
plonker, so it takes me quite a while to break in a Brooks B17.

[RBW] Re: Giving up on my Cambium C17

2017-06-14 Thread Bob K.
For about a decade, I rode B17s exclusively. I then I went on a short tour with
a bunch of rain in the forecast and didn't want to fuss with leather--not that
my saddles haven't gotten wet many times over the years, but regardless. I
threw on a relatively narrow Selle plastic saddle and went for it. I loved it.
But honestly, as much as I liked the feel and no-fuss nature of it, it was too
ugly. I demoed a C15 to see if that would be a good middle ground and I hated
it at first. Felt like a rock. Made some adjustments and took a few more rides
and all of a sudden I liked it. Ordered a C15 carved and couldn't be happier. I
still love the B17 on my Sam, but the C15 carved ticks all the boxes for me in
terms of comfort, good looks, and lack of fuss.

Hi Tim, my experience with the C17 is the same as yours. I find the C17
good for about 10-15 miles and after that my sit bones are aching. As I
prefer a Brooks Pro over a B17, I thought maybe I needed a narrower saddle,
so I tried the C15. That was like sitting on the sharp edge of an ax. The
C15 is actually a lot like the old Selle San Marco Regal.

[RBW] Re: Giving up on my Cambium C17

2017-06-14 Thread REC
Hi, Broccoli Cog.

I got my first Brooks--a B17 two months ago on a Joe A. Prior to that, I
rode inexpensive saddles that I purchased at the LBS, but those rides were
usually short, less than 10 miles.

My first ride on B17 was OK, but my sits bones and back hurt a little, like
the first spring ride after the winter is finally over. Don't know if it
was the saddle or the upright position. Never had an issue after that.
Only about 125-150 miles on it so far and no other issues. I cannot say
"it's the most comfortable saddle ever" but I can say that I can ride it 30
miles without any issues and not really noticing it's there. I guess that
makes it the most comfortable saddle in that there is no discomfort at all.

I did try a cambium, the C19 I think, on a test ride of another bike and
did not like it. However, I was only on it for 10 minutes, so not sure
that was a fair test ride. One day, I'd like to try a flyer on my Joe.

I ride in regular clothes, no padded shorts.

[RBW] Snoqualmie Wow

2017-06-14 Thread Deacon Patrick
Compass’ EL Snoqualmie have turned my Hunqapillar into a stout, geared
Quickbeam. Grin.

Just did my first ride on thebeauties, all of 8 miles, but it is the 8 miles of
Ute Pass to Woodland Park via CR21 that I ride to ride anywhere else. Wow. Yet
smoother than the Compass (not surprising with 44mm vs 38). I was a full gear
higher at the same exertion vs. my Racing Ralph 2.1” (yeah, a big difference in
tire size, so more than one factor).

I look forward to getting onto the singletrack and seeing how the do there. I’d
LOVE a 2 or 2.1” Compass tire for an all-round do everything on a plush cloud
tire, but I suspect the Snoqualmie will be far less underbiking than the
Compass.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Platform Pedal Recommendation for Sam

2017-06-14 Thread Clayton.sf
Most comfortable platform pedal I have ever pedaled is the Canfield
Cramp-on Ultimate. The new Mountain version looks good too, but have no
first hand experience.

The are convex! Not concave. They need some lube now and then, but so far
they have held very well on the MTB. Very spendy, but more comfy than
Wellgo MG-1, VP, GripKing, Shimano, MKS touring, etc. Feeling on the foot
is like amazingly comfortable arch support with no pressure where I don't
like it. I can ride them for hours in nothing but a pair of thin soled
bedrock sandals.

For lower price the MG-1 are hard to beat. Light, strong, trouble free. I
have approx. 30,000 miles on one set and it is still going strong.

Re: [RBW] Rear hub for Atlantis build: WI or PW?

2017-06-14 Thread Clayton.sf
I have had excellent experience with both DT 240s/350s hubs and recent WI.

The WI MI5 is a fantastic hub with emphasis on durability and likely would
look best on the Atlantis.

If you want DT you have to by older versions. All new ones in 135mm are
disc hubs. You can change the rear spacing from 130 to 135 with an end-cap,
but is it not recommended by DT because they feel like it changes the dish
to the detriment of the wheel.

Stay away from current (anything past 750) xt touring hubs. I "saved" some
money on a rear hub and had the Freewheel seize up twice on me in the past
2 years, essentially turning the bike into a derailered fixed gear. Super
dangerous to rider and bike alike! I am not the only one with this problem.
Not sure what causes it but the new Freehub bearings are smaller than in
the past.

[RBW] Re: Rear hub for Atlantis build: WI or PW?

2017-06-14 Thread Garth

More money doesn't always mean a better hub, and I define an excellent
hub as one that works as intended with minimal maintenance.

FWIW, I don't own any cassette wheels, having run PW FW hubs ongoing. They
have been excellent, and I for one do prefer the independence of hub and
freewheel.

I keep thinking "one of these days" I may get a cassette wheel , and what
would I choose. so yeah I have wondered about these things just like Isaac.

I have read many "reports/reviews" of various failures with PW and even
Shimano hubs, mainly the late generation XT hubs with the aluminum axles. I
have not ran across one failure with WI hubs however. So I guess I'd
choose between a basic Deore or LX and the WI M15. Yes I know LX are not
manufactured anymore but I do see Peter While lists he has some still and
so do others if you look around.

Issac,
You may want to peruse the archives of the tandem list and see what
holds up well on tandems.
In the past, I've had very good luck with Phil wood freewheel hubs but their
cassette hubs don't seem to have the same durability.

I have little experience with cassette hubs but I've seen numerous glowing
reviews for various Shimano hubs.

You may also check with Peter White for his recommendation.
He sells lots of wheels to touring riders and has many years of experience
getting feedback on equipment.

I think the WI M15's are beautiful hubs and less spendy than PW rear

Re: [RBW] Rear hub for Atlantis build: WI or PW?

2017-06-14 Thread Steve Palincsar

I've had the Phil Wood Touring hubs, and I'm done with them.

The one that was on my Saluki and eventually on my MAP failed on a ride
when one of the ratchets broke off and in turn ruined the gearing on the
inside of the hub shell. I had Phil rebuild it, but there was so much
internal resistance if I turned the crank backwards the chain would
droop down onto the chainstay. After three or four attempts at a fix at
the LBS I finally gave up and retired the wheel, replaced with a new one
built on a Shimano 105 hub.

My other Phil hub was built into a 700C wheel that was on my Rambouillet
and then my VO Randonneur. For the past 5 years it had been making
clanking noises while pedaling, including the odd occasional "skip". I
figured it was the same condition as the other one, but this time
instead of spending several hundred dollars having Phil rebuild the hub,
I got a new wheel built on a Dura Ace hub instead. Proof positive that
it was the hub: as soon as I swapped out the wheel the clanking and
skipping stopped.

I have no experience with the White Industries hubs, although I know
many speak well of them. But I wouldn't rule out a plain old Shimano
hub - they give excellent service and they're a whole lot less expensive
than boutique hubs.

However, I've never tried a phil hub, but i do remember hearing some issues

[RBW] Re: Platform Pedal Recommendation for Sam

I use the MKS Grip King or Lambda pedals on my Sam. I added spikes and
think the traction as effective as clipless and cleats. I used VP on my
Hunq until the bearings decided to fail in the middle of a 10 day tour.
I've since replaced them with MKS so I can service them myself.

[RBW] Re: Giving up on my Cambium C17

2017-06-14 Thread Jay Connolly
I have both Rivet saddles and Brooks saddles. The Rivets are comfortable more
quickly, IMO, but the Brooks saddles are a little more comfortable in time. I
tried the Cambium and hated it. I was surprised by the claims that it was
designed to replicate a B17 in a different material. I'm plenty heavy enough to
take advantage of the flex in a Cambiu, but it felt like 2x4s to me.

[RBW] Re: Giving up on my Cambium C17

2017-06-14 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
I own a ton of Brooks leather saddles and really don't find the B17 hard to
break in, per se. In fact, the shape is basically comfortable to me from
the beginning. The Brooks Pro is extremely hard and can go a long time
before any break in at all happens. I bought a used B17 off of eBay and I
think the secret is to not have it dimpled with someone else's sit bones
already impressed. However, I have read of people who bought well used
ones and over time the leather simply molds to their body from the previous
owners. I also cannot abide with the Cambium. I'd love to like it but the
rounded back portion of the saddle doesn't agree with me. Another saddle
I like very much is the Berthoud Mente. It is wide and flat in the back
with a long and narrow "nose". Works really well for me.
