[RBW] Re: Lost & found anything while riding?

2017-11-04 Thread dstein
I've lost several frame pumps (user error I'm sure). I also have several
gloves missing their pair, somehow it ends up always being the same side so
I can't make a pair out of the three lost gloves I have.

Butone day I was riding my Jones in China Camp in the Bay Area. I
noticed towards the end of the ride on a paved section that my handlebar
bag was open. Checked and my keys were in there, but not my wallet. It was
an Ocean Air wallet that I really liked and is not easily replaceable
depending on their stock, and I hadn't had it for very long. I was pissed.
I don't think much money was in there, and credit cards were easily
replaceable, but I wasn't looking forward to a trip to the DMV and dealing
with a replacing a few other things I had, not to mention the wallet. My
riding buddies treated me beer and a sandwich after.

I woke up the next day and for some reason thought to check the mailbox on
a Sunday morning for my wallet, and sure enough it was there. Some kind
stranger found my wallet on the trail and drove all the way from China Camp
to Oakland to drop it off in the mailbox (thankfully my license had my
current address).

You'd think I learned my lesson, but just last week I was riding and
noticed my bag was open, then saw my phone pop right out of it, luckily I
saw it and was able to grab it, but not before almost causing a trail
accident from stopping so suddenly.. So if anyone wants some free shit,
just follow me on the trail.

2017-11-04 Thread Ty Smith
Beautiful bike! Particularly love your harlequin bar-tape job!

My wife/I just did traditional bar-tape with twine and shellac on my Salsa
Casseroll the Rivendell way. We did try to match the leather trim on my
Gilles Berthoud handlebar bag. However, we really admire your bar-tape
with the alternating diamond colors at the bottom. My wife wants to do
mine again and also use an alternating scheme to do either the same thing
you did or similar. It's way beyond my skill, but she's an excellent
gift-wrapper and makes homemade ribbon bows so I think that translates well
to wrapping bar tape.

If not too much trouble, could you post some more pictures of your
handlebars from some different angles?

Below is what she did for my bars. Not bad for a first attempt!

Re: [RBW] Pashley What If...

2017-11-04 Thread Dave Grossman
I have two bikes currently with drum brakes including my for sale Guv'nor
and a Workcycles Transport Double Top Tube. They are not hydro discs but
nothing is. I have XT hydros on my Jones and they are the best brakes I
have ever used. However, I think the drums are great. They are impervious
to weather, require just a bit of grease in their port, and never really
change feel. I would buy them over cheap discs without a doubt.

I'm not so sure I would consider changing the wheels on the Guv. I get the
issue with limited tire options but the huge wheels and low trail is what
makes the bike so magical. It is so smooth and smaller wheels would surely
change the feel. I've owned a lot of 26" bikes and I have lots of love for
them but this is a different feel altogether.

And Patrick, I changed my name in the settings. I belong to a number of
cycling forums and most folks don't go by there real names but rather a
handle. As it seems somewhat the norm here to use names, per your
suggestion, I have changed it up. I've bought and sold a number of times
on here as my handle though without anyone saying a thing.

You are right; thanks for pointing that out -- 635, not 630. But that
brings the 2 wheel systems very close, assuming that the 28s are really
about 38 mm wide, and the Snoqualmies really 44 mm wide: 360 for the 635 X
38s, 359 for the 622 X 44s.

Patrick, aye, but I’d love the option of a lugged 2.1” tire as that opens the

despairing sisyphusian hells with 175s. But still, much of interest, like

[RBW] Re: Lost & found anything while riding?

2017-11-04 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
Well, my lost and found is not nearly as romantic...but sure fits the bill.

On one of my annual rides to the in-laws for thanksgiving dinner, I lost my
pocket knife. Most years, we've had snow, but it rarely sticks around
because we often get the 60 degree days mixed in. This particular year
though, we had a couple good dumps and there was plenty piled up. Right in
the middle of a corner I heard something hit the ground and bounce a couple
times. It took a minute for me to take stock and I could only surmise my
15+ year old Spyderco Delica had worked out of my pocket, dropped and
skipped off the trail into the snow. I searched for a good 30 minutes till
my fingers were numb and gave up.

I ride to the inlaws several times a year, and every time I went through
that corner, I slowed down like I was expecting it to just be sitting
there. TWO years later, I was on my way back for another carb fest but this
time the weather was nice, I was running early, and decided to stop and
brew up coffee in my fateful turn. While I drank my cuppa, I paced back and
forth through the brush on the sides of the trail again to no avail. So
giving up again, I crossed to the other side of the trail that would come
up the "inside" of the turn to walk back. And right there, in the middle of
the turn, not 4ft off the trial, I spotted a glint of metal. No possible
way I thought. I wear my knife in my right pocket, and this was a left
turn...if it came out, it would surely have bounced off to the right?! I
pushed back the tall weeds, and right there was my Spyderco. I just stood
there looking at it, my mind trying to come up with some alternate
explanation. It must be someone elses, I'm on prank tv, a squirrel moved
it...what are the odds I thought. I reached down, picked it up, and looked
at the clip. The old Delicas' clip was molded into the scales and the
patent info raised on it. Mine was worn nearly smooth, but in the small
recesses left, there was yellow paint imbedded from a fall and skid on some
curb paint. I licked my thumb and wiped off the dirt, and behold the
lo...no question, this was MY knife. I lovingly and securely stashed it
inside my swift rando bag and carried on to a bizarrely thankful
thanksgiving. That night after returning home, I cleaned, sharpened, and
oiled it and finally scratched that itch in the back of my mind.

The wild thing is, this was along one of, if not THE most heavily used
trails in colorado. The Cherry Creek Trail. I think I was more in shock
someone else hadn't found it. Anyway, I still have it, and it's journey has
made it even more endearing to me.

Re: [RBW] Pashley What If...

2017-11-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
Perfectly reasonable question, Joe. I get issues in two conditions, Joe. 32˚F
to 15˚F when wet and mud from the road lands on the drive train and messes up
the derailer, preventing use of higher gears (also freezing on the rims, making
braking possible only after a lot of pumbing), or the same thing happening
below zero because the chain is too stiff to make it round the smaller cogs.

All ridable, but not sustainable for doing longer rides or more frequent rides.
In theory, this fixes both problems, but does it bring up new ones? At -20˚F
what does the oil in a IGH do? Too stiff to ride? These are my questions. I
know somone in the northern states had done this and had issues.

Aside from just thinking it's a cool idea (I do, I love the drum brake/IGH
look), would this really make a better winter bike than the current
derailer/brakes setup? Honest question, I don't ride in the type of winter
conditions you face.

Here’s my current musing:

Hunqapillar, convert to 650b, with Sturmey Archer 5 or 8 speed IGH, drum brakes
(which European MTB sites seem to like better than disk in some cases
(Scotland) and dyno front hub/90mm drum brake). That addresses the handling,
and gives all weather drivetrain and braking, using my Hunqapillar. Challenges,
pitfalls, ideas, etc?

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for minimal footwear in winter? Large big toe joint problem.

2017-11-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
Another factor to consider, from here beyond the pale, is that winter cycling
requires far more to keep feet warm than running in the same temps when the
temps drom below freezing. The foot is above the ground and always subjected to
moving air, so zero insulative factor from snow and there is alwasy wind when
cycling, and until you get below 15˚F there is often wet — all of which
magnifies the loss of heat from the feet.

Some general factors to keep in mind, no matter how temprate your winter:

— roomy shoes are key to increased circulation is key to keeping feet warmer.
— Keeping calves warm keeps feet warm. (I’m good in boiled wool knee socks and
sandlas with ventile gators (block wind at calves) down to the very wet 20˚F,
but just).
— once feet start to get cold they can decline VERY rapidly. If you can’t feel
your toes themselves wiggle (not “I felt my foot move somewhere, so I’m good!”)
you MUST get them inside and warm them SLOWLY.
— The best winter system includes insulation, windblocking yet HIGHLY
breathable, oversized for circulation.

Patrick

Re: [RBW] Pashley What If...

2017-11-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
Ah ha! Thanks for the catch, Steve. So that’s a 3” smaller wheel. Another error
I made is I didn’t double the tire delta, so the diameter delta in tire is
actually 1.6”, so while my math was confused, the concept is right because the
two errors offset each other and the end result is close to a 700c wheel. IF I
didn’t confuse myself even more. Sardonic grin.

Bottom line conclution is IF this is possible it suddenly makes this a very
utilitarian bike, at least for me, with the ability to be both my winter bike
and my go fastish adventure bike (Quickbeam with gears and even plusher tires).

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for minimal footwear in winter? Large big toe joint problem.

2017-11-04 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
I think the answer to this question varies depending on what "winter" means. I
think you're in the DC area, Lum, and so your winters are pretty similar to
here in KC. So will you ride in wet snow? What temperatures are you looking to
be comfortable in. Are you a completely and totally insane person, like Deacon
Patrick, who has to think about temps of 20 below zero? (SARDONIC GRIN) Or
is your cutoff freezing? Above or below freezing? I can't imagine any sandal
and sock combination keeping my toes warm much below 45 or so without some type
of wind stopper layer. Maybe it's just your normal cycling shoe, sized up 1/2
size or so to fit thicker wool socks and perhaps a liner below that. I use a
Keen hiking shoe, one pair of thicker Smartwool sock (hiking, usually) until
around 40. After that a windproof cycling shoe cover. I have to buy these new
every 2-3 years because I don't wear cleats and my grippy pedals eventually
wear out the bottom. That combo is good to around freezing. From freezing to 20
or so I add a base liner of a Smartwool cycling sock under the thicker ones.
Much below 20 I really don't care to ride, but I will if I have to. At any
rate, fingers and toes are the most vulnerable parts in the cold.

Math check:

Wheel delta from 635mm (28”) to 599 mm (26”) = 36mm or 1.4” smaller diameter.

Increase tire delta from 1.5” to 2.3” = .8” so just over half the difference
made up, putting it at roughly a 700c equivilant wheel?

[RBW] Pashley What If...

2017-11-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
Ideas? Thoughts? Thinking convoluted or inspired or somewhere in between?

What if... I got a 24.5” Speed 5, but with the 26” wheels of the 20.5” frame.
This (possibly) accomplishes several things:

— standard US wheel size opens up a world of tires, including:
— Compass Rat Trap Pass, at 2.3” tire (would that fit with the smaller rim?) a
lighterish, all weather bashabout bike that is smooth and cushy. My version of
a “go fast” for the riding I do.
— Racing Ralphs for winter riding (and what a great bike for winter with simple
drive train and drum brakes?)
— with larger tires the overall final diameter of the wheel/tire combo is close
to unchanged?

[RBW] Cross Post: looking for flat, thin and serviceable nylon pedals

2017-11-04 Thread jeffrey kane
I posted this to the iBob list as well so my apologies for the redundancy:

I'm in search of a nylon or plastic type body -- I don't care for
replaceable steel pins. I really like the nylon-like models: they don't
scratch stuff that they come in contact with and are usually pretty light.
Inexpensive is nice but not a barrier to purchase. I wore through a pair of
cheap VP's in a year already (the bearings feel like a pepper grinder) and
can't be replaced. I prefer the thin bodies (2cm or under) over the old
school 3cm BMX types. I like allen key install over traditional pedal
wrench fittings ... and yes, I'd like to rebuild them after riding through
east-coast salt infused winters, whether sealed bearing or loose ball.

Any ideas for candidates that fit the bill?
