Re: [RBW] a snowy mt. diablo
Followups: Cheryl; It was not too bad, but I definitely understand why they had closed the road. The worst part of the descent was simply having to take it easy and get much colder than I would've otherwise since it took longer (I had full wind protection for the descent). Brad, Manuel, David; I'm glad you enjoyed the photos, we're lucky to have such wonderful bicycles... Not to get overly contemplative, but often I feel as though my rides are symbiotic affairs between my bike, camera, and self. Each encourages the other. George; Living in Nebraska for many years, I was forced to learn to use my framing to maximize the quality of a given situation. The limits to scenery composition there forced me to think about it. I've never studied still photography, but my father is a cinematographer and the lessons were passed down. Your commendation means much. Since you mentioned a pinhole camera, I'll offer a modern method I've enjoyed as a thanks. Using a fine drill bit, you can thin the center of the stock lens cap of any DSLR. Use a pin to finish the job, and you can use that to get close (some replace the middle with a metal patch to improve the 'lens'). I've made one and carry it in my bag; though I rarely use it, it is something to consider if you can appreciate the technique as it only adds a couple grams to your kit. [RBW] Run Over Your Rambouillet, Get a Roadeo
Oh I know she didn't mean to, but...Yeah, my Rivendell-ravenous wife (inadvertantly) backed the family car over her beloved Rambouillet last month, mortally wounding it. Coincidentally, the awesomely beautiful Roadeo popped up on Riv's frame specials - and I thought I was the only one in the fam who while'd-away time drooling over the Riv website. Alas, yesterday, this here husband turned Santa and picked out, and up a minty-blue 59cm (she's 5' 10) Roadeo frame. I must say, the Riv gang nailed this one - I am totally jealous. (Rich almost had me selling my Della Santa in favor of my own Roadeo - damn, if he didn't get close!) Once we get it put together I post pics. Interesting to note, according to Mark, the preference for threadless vs threaded stem on this frame is dead even at 50-50 so far. I guess if you are espousing a light weight bike, then why not go threadless. BTW, the killer feature on this bike is the neatly placed, diminutive rear fender attachment, place just behind the BB. [RBW] Re: Building my new Bombadil... at last!!!
Daang man, that thing is sweet! Let us know how the Swift feels- most people seem to think they are very comfortable and _really_ good quality. I have yet to try one and am curious, but cautious since they're a little more $$. On Dec 8, 12:25 am, Rene Sterental orthie...@gmail.com wrote: Today in the afternoon there was a very nice break in the rain and I drove up to RBW to pick up my new Bombadil frame. Such a long anticipation... Here are the pictures of the build as it is coming along. Not yet finished, but wanted to share with everyone. The color is definitely awesome. Depending on the light and your eyes, it's either definitely green, almost black but not quite the same as the saddle, or something in between. I think that it's going to keep growing in me, just like the Homer's Waterford blue. You can tell that the paint job has its small imperfections and details, but somehow I'm not upset and think they give the bike some character and are a premonition of the many scratches that I'm sure I'll add as soon as I take it off-road and mountain biking. Here is the report of what I've done so far... - Installed RaceFace Team XC external BB with a set of RaceFace Atlas cranks I had to which I had installed Shimano XT 22-32-44 rings. - Installed Shimano HC-61 12-36 cassette; it's still not widely available, but found one online. - Put Panaracer 29 x 2.35 knobby tires, but am a bit concerned with the clearance between the knobs and the stays. The current clearance is 4mm, but the rear wheel appears not to be perfectly dished as it is 1mm closer on one side. I'm sure Rick will adjust it when I go back to RBW. Is this clearance too tight? Should I go down to 29 x 2.0 Specialized El Capitan Control tires? - Going to try a Brooks Swift saddle, if I don't like it I'll put a B-17. - Installed Nitto drop stem and Moustache handlebars. Have both seat and handlebars roughly adjusted, fine tuning will be done later. In parallel I'm installing the Paul Racer brakes on the Homer, so I'll post those pictures when I'm done in a separate thread... :-) Pictures of current progress can be found here:http://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/sets/72157622958472288/ When I'm done I'll upload a set to the Bombadil group and send pictures to Cyclofiend as well. [RBW] Re: Introduction from Austin, TX
Clif, I find the hills of the Dam Loop (60 miles of 360/2244/620) are good training for our rides. When you get serious, you'll want to become a RUSA member, but Wayne (our RBA) is welcoming to all cyclists, RUSA or not. I'd love to see more traditional minded (lugged steel, Brooks, racks and bags) cyclists in our ranks. If you can average 15 mph over 100 miles, you're ready for a 200K. Slower is fine, too. You're bound to have company whatever pace you ride at. Far more important than fast is to be prepared (self-sufficient for repairs), efficient in and out of controls (checkpoint stops), well fueled, dressed for the range of temperatures and so forth. Re: [RBW] Honjo Fender Install
Read Hiroshi's complete, well- conceived and well-articulated instructions on the Jitensha site. It didn't take me more than 40 minutes to install my Honjos, tho' I'd cut my teeth on a pair of Berthouds a couple of years earlier. Basically: hold up to frame, mark, drill, bolt. It helps a huge amount to use a workstand that allows you to flip the frame upside down. On 12/9/09, Rene Sterental orthie...@gmail.com wrote: I spent the best part of a Satuirday installing mine. [RBW] Re: panniers
I've also read somewhere that there are panniers in the works, but I can't remember whether or not it was a credible source. I'm in the market for panniers and have been waiting for Riv to update their shop. I bought a Nigel Smythe country bag and lil loafer, but I realized that I need much more room for commuting (though I'll probably keep the duo for fun rambling rides). On my usual commute I need to carry a laptop, power cord, the usual personal items, a sandwich, a thermos, a few books, maybe a collapsible back pillow, and still have theoretical room for a few groceries on the ride home. Unfortunately, I can't carry anything on my back while I ride, so it's all got to get strapped to the bike somehow. Right now I'm using a handmade wooden box, but I'd rather have something classy and canvas with a lid so that I can leave the contents unattended for a few minutes when I run into a store (an open box seems to have take me, I'm free written all over it). I'm debating between a Nigel Smythe Big Box and the as-of-yet-unseen panniers, but another consideration is that I don't have an office (and probably wont for at least another year and a half), and so my bike ends up being locked up outside all over Berkeley and Oakland cafes for hours at a time. [RBW] Re: panniers
Rivendell News, August 20th 2009 http://www.rivbike.com/blogs/news_post/148 We WILL have panniers and a messenger bag (--maybe on that) in the Spring. There are still some mounting details to work out for the panniers. The big companies use plastic hardware that their in-house industrial designers design, then they order millions of them to get the per-piece cost down, and that's not in the cards for us. If we can work out a dumbed-down version that works 95 percent as well, we'll go that way. We're about 75 percent of the way there now, but it's not on the front-burner right now. [RBW] Re: panniers
Actually, the Wald basket/ShopSack combo doesn't look like a bad idea! The ShopSack isn't quite as classy as I had in mind (I'm trying to avoid the professor-hobo look, although I seem to keep replicating it in spite of myself), but it might end up fitting the bill. I do like how neatly the bag fits into the Wald basket, and presumably one could leave it attached as a lining when it's not needed for use as a mega-bag. The only thing, though, is that I'm not sure I'd like to have a basket strapped to the bike all the time (that's something annoying about this wooden box I have now), and the zip-tie attachment makes it hard to remove. But it's definitely a smart option worth considering! How are other people commuting (in style or otherwise) these days? Seth: The bike it was on is being repainted (a Bombadil clear powdercoat that didn't like the salt air of the Jersey Shore), so I can't post the actual pictures, unless I can find an old one. I'll look tonight. But the Nitto Saddlebag Grip (what I called the Quick Release) is here (if I have the link right -- if not, go to Bags and Racks on Riv website, second page has the Nitto Saddlebag Grip), and there's a picture there. http://www.rivbike.com/products/list/bags_and_racks?a=1page=3#product=20-109 You can actually get an even tighter connection than the one shown if you put the buckle inside the bag, so that all that shows outside is the strap. Releases in 1 second, reattaches in 1 second, totally solid connection, just a great product. Pricey, of course, but worth it, in my book. [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Arrived Ten Minutes Ago!
Robert: Thanks for the photos! Now I want a new bike just so I can open the box! I worked from home so when my Atlantis showed up, that was the end of work for that dayand maybe a bit of the next. They've improved the packing. The white tube protecting the headset and HT is new, and the attachment for the block protecting the top of the seat tube. It amazes me that they got a 66 cm frame in a UPS box with the rack. Mine's 58 cm and in order to get into a box within the UPS limits without going oversize, I have to take off the racks (rear sticks up too high), seat, h'bars, flip the forks round. And then it all just barely fits. If you've still got the box, would you mind measuring? One of my touring buds has a 58 cm LHT and he gives up and has a bike shop pack it. I'm too stubborn ( cheap). Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Arrived Ten Minutes Ago!
You're welcome. The packing is pretty amazing, though I'm glad I didn't spend a whole lot of time admiring it. :-) Before I forget, the box measures 55x37x10. As for work, I was coming down with a cold yesterday which I completely ignored in order to build the bike and take a ride. By the time I got back in last night I was pretty under the weather and last night was miserable. I ended up calling sick today. I suspect my co-workers think I stayed home to play with the bike. I wish. Still I did take the opportunity to clutter up the bike a bit. It was purchased to be a commuter, so I really need the fenders, I might have gotten away without the front rack, but I'm thinking of going with Sackville SlickerSack (to match my Sackville Saddlesack L) down the road (when I've got some money again). Re: [RBW] Re: Building my new Bombadil... at last!!!
Thanks! Correction: It's a Swallow saddle, not a Swift. I took it out of the box, put it on the Bombadil, did a couple of loops on my patio to check saddle height and get a feel for the bike in its unfinished state. My butt complained vigorously that this was too narrow and didn't have the new nice seating area its gotten used to after trying the B-17 on the Homer. Complained very loudly and involved some additional members in the region... Swift saddle went back to the box, backup B-17 saddle got installed on the Bombadil, butt and neighbors sighed with content once again. I will be posting the brand new black Swift saddle with Ti rails for sale shortly on a separate thread. [RBW] Re: panniers
I'm somewhat confused about the statement that big companies use plastic hardware that their in-house industrial designers design. Is Gilles Berthoud a big company, I didn't think so. They do, however, use many Klick-Fix attachment products that work quite well. These are made in Germany by Rixen Kaul and are available in a large variety to suit various needs. Here's a link to an example of the mounting for Gilles Berthoud' GB1500 panniers: http://euroasiaimports.net/ProductCart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=551idproduct=5693 Gilles Berthoud uses the same type of mounting system on their GB799 panniers. I own a set of the GB799 panniers they mount quite nicely on a Nitto Campee style rear rack. Here's a link to a photo from the Wallingford Bicycle Parts site that shows the bag-making operations at Gilles Berthoud in 2002 (apparently, they only had one person making their bags at that time): http://www.wallbike.com/berthoud/workstour/gbvisit10.html Jim Cloud Tucson, AZ On Dec 9, 1:41 pm, Nicholas Grieco nicholasgri...@att.net wrote: Rivendell News, August 20th 2009http://www.rivbike.com/blogs/news_post/148 We WILL have panniers and a messenger bag (--maybe on that) in the Spring. [RBW] FS - Ostrich bag and decaleur, VO front and rear racks, TA pedals, Zeus brake levers / maybe honjo hammered fenders for 650b
Hello - I am the delighted new owner of a beautiful Saluki that you will recognize, and a sometimes poster here as well. This is a lovely bike, rides very nicely, fast and stable; but there are some parts on it that are either duplications of what I already have, or don't fit with how I use/will use the bike. The list - front VO constructeur rack and integrated decaleur + Ostrich bag (I have a bag and will use a different rack) rear VO constructeur rack (I need a rack that has further setback, will entertain a swap) TA pedals (too small for my very big and wide feet) Zeus brake levers (slightly embarrassing to say, but I will be putting brifters on). These levers are supremely beautiful and work like a Leica. The racks are in virtually new condition, no wear of any sort, as is the bag The pedals are of course vintage, but are in excellent shape (and I will include the leather covered toe clips) And the brake levers are in immaculate condition And...if you have a Saluki already...and would like these fenders in addition to the racksI will ship you the fenders with the racks already installed (a giant PITA that installation is, i did it on another bike...painful!)...and even if you have fenders already, perhaps we can just trade...fenders with racks for fenders without, assuming they're honjos or similar, and drilled for a Saluki. Pricing front rack, bag, and decaleur - rack - $110.00, bag and decaleur $105.00 rear rack $65 TA pedals - $125 Zeus brake levers - I just don't know what the market for these is...I gladly will entertain suggestions. Here is a link to photos of the parts taken by the previous owner of the bikeit's almost sacreligious to take these parts off, this bike is so well put together / integrated...but the racks don't do what I need them to; and as much as I enjoy the beauty of the pedals and levers, they don't fit me as well as others I already have. http://tinyurl.com/yhlyju9 Please email me off list if you are interested. Nicole wrote: I'm debating between a Nigel Smythe Big Box and the as-of-yet-unseen panniers, but another consideration is that I don't have an office (and probably wont for at least another year and a half), and so my bike ends up being locked up outside all over Berkeley and Oakland cafes for hours at a time. That's led me to look for some easily detachable setup that turns into a messenger bag when I need to unload the bike, something like these from Basil: (The Weekender) http://www.seattlebikesupply.com/item/145054 (The Messenger) http://www.seattlebikesupply.com/catalog/bags-packs/ messenger I'm still hoping for the Rivendell holy grail before I decide to try out the Basil, though. - Nicole Nicole: I seem to have gone through a similar thought process. For a long time, I used Ortlieb panniers to commute to work, but it was inconvenient to transfer the contents to a bag I could use at work (which involves going from classroom to classroom). Now I'm using a Carradice saddlebag (Riv's offerings would work well, too) with a quick release (read about it here (ingenious!): http:// www.cyclofiend.com/working/2009/wbph001-andreball0909.html -- this bag carries my lunch and clothes. The other part of my solution is a wide front rack with a Carradice Bike Bureau attached to it with the clips which usually fit on the rear rack rails. And perhaps a bungee over the top. I say 'solution' but this isn't implemented yet, because I still need the wide front rack to make it work. But when I have the rack, I'll have two quick-releasable bags, and one which looks just like a handsome school satchel. (note that the new Bike Bureaus are *much* better looking than what you see online, because they're using honey leather straps again) Alex Wetmore, who hosts the BOB list and many others, gave me the idea for the front setup. He uses a messenger bag. Art Tacoma -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: panniers
Nicole - I've been using a medium Wald (in front on a Mark's rack) and Shopsack for a few months now, and I love it. Super convenient, and easy to put stuff even under the bag (when I have to bring donuts, and such). The bag just clips on, so it's easy to remove and doesn't affect much in the way of ride-ability. I've also used the basket as a light mount with the help of a spare wine cork. This setup has been better than my Ortlieb office bag on the other bike, as it's more stuffable and there's more versatility with a basket in terms of ease of use. It also stays a lot cleaner being in the front on the rainy days when the rear panniers tent to get a coating of road grit. BTW - for the post about the re-openable zip tie - just cut the old ones off and use new ties when you want to put it back on. They're super cheap - get a big bag at a hardware store and you'll be set for years... For pannier mounts, I called Wayne at the Touring Store (touringstore.com) he had Ortlieb's attachments. Don't recall what they're called but they hook over the rack and have a clever little roll over fitting that wraps around the rack tube. I fitted these up to some REI panniers that don't lock properly onto my Nitto rack (tubing is too big). Clean, neat fix. Another adaptation that solves a lot problems is D-rings with small tubing clamps (any hardware store) and either small bungies or shock cord. For instance, I found the 4 Velcro straps on my Acorn bag a bit awkward, so I fitted the bottom with a couple of D-rings and tie it down with a bungie. Quicker simpler than Acorn's design, easier to remove and actually puts a bit of tension on the bag so it's more secure. With imagination you can make some clean adaptations. Oh, and their cheap as well. dougP On Dec 9, 5:58 pm, Seth Vidal skvi...@gmail.com wrote: On Wed, Dec 9, 2009 at 8:35 PM, Brian Hanson stone...@gmail.com wrote: BTW - for the post about the re-openable zip tie - just cut the old ones off and use new ties when you want to put it back on. Robert: Thanks for checking the box size. I was afeared of that when I saw your photos. The box Riv used is 149 (girth+length). UPS Fed Ex have 130 as their magic number before going into oversize. Maybe not a huge hit with a commercial customer like Riv but I got hit with it earlier this year, to the tune of something like $45. I don't really know what the cost to ship my bike was offhand. I do know the total cost though. I'm not at home right now so I can't check the invoice. Out here in Hawaii we just get used to it. Even though I'm under the weather I had to go out this evening so I took the following image with my iPhone. It's not a good image, but you can see the SKS fenders and my large Sackville Saddlesack. I've really got the sack stuffed too: laptop, tookit, sweater (I have to spend the evening in an aircon'd room), big sandwich, sodas, and some other stuff I'm sure. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/4172722491/ The nice thing about a 66cm bike is that the big Sackville doesn't look really out of place. With a cold the fenders took a little doing. SKS fenders are very easy to put on...the second time around. I ended up use the SKS Secu-Clips on the back instead of on the front as the directions indicate for stock installations. In fact I'm not sure how many of the gear combos I'm going to be able to use and maintain a nice look on the back. It's not a big concern though. I've also got a little Planet Bike light on a Paul's Gino mount on the front. I'm still trying to decide what to do about lighting. I ride enough at night around town that it is a concern. Aloha! Could be tough to beat the connection quality of multiple zip ties-- rock solid. I get the urge to remove the basket sometimes but I never do because I too don't like the idea of wasting zip ties (and I know I want the basket on there most of the time). I wonder how well three properly sized and placed voile straps would hold a wald onto a rack. I'm thinking two placed in parallel along the narrow dimension of the rack and one along the long dimension. The straps are slightly elastic (not as elastic as a bungee) and you can really crank them down tight. As a bonus the orange color will certainly add some speed to the bike (skiers too are concerned with speed hence the color selection). I have two straps that I use for backcountry skiing but I don't currently have the urge to snip my zip ties so the experiment will have to wait for another day. I figure people on this list will find myriad uses for these wonderful straps so I'm posting this message regardless that I've not run the experiment. They make great stocking-stuffers too. http://www.voile-usa.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PRODProduct_Code=800Category_Code=VSSProduct_Count=0 (Disclaimer: I have NO personal or business relationship with Voile- USA.) -Mike On Dec 9, 5:58 pm, Seth Vidal skvi...@gmail.com wrote: On Wed, Dec 9, 2009 at 8:35 PM, Brian Hanson stone...@gmail.com wrote: BTW - for the post about the re-openable zip tie - just cut the old ones off and use new ties when you want to put it back on. [RBW] Re: AT 0154
It's a complicated story of chance and bike lust. Awhile ago I was trying to sell a 58 Saluki and got an offer to trade. It wasn't what I was looking for at the time, but it seems like every time fall/winter comes around I want a touring bike (then in spring/summer I think gee, wouldn't it be fun to get a new fast bike?). I was thinking Surly, but then got to thinkin', maybe that Atlantis is still available? And here I am. Now I can wait until spring/summer to build up the Rambouillet for my go-fast jones.
