[RBW] Re: Nuance of the rebate system

2012-02-01 Thread John Bennett
Dear William, and everyone,

The new software that we're using has made many things possible, and
has, I think, made online ordering and keeping track of purchases
easier. That said, it has changed a few things, too, and we're still
working through them.

The system has a few limitations that we're addressing, and your
illustration below may be one of those. We'll figure it out, and we
will always advise people about how to get the most from their
rebates.

The rebates have always expired (at the end of the year), and while
the new rebates technically expire sooner, the grace period is
incredibly long. One additional new benefit to membership is that once
you buy something, you're in forever, or for as long as we're
around, which will be a long time. We no longer charge $20 a year,
which will hopefully off-set any changes to the new rebate system.

You are always welcome to call and talk about any of this, or
anything. We're around: (800) 345-3918. If you have specific concerns
about your rebate, or how the whole thing is working, email Dave
(d...@rivbike.com). He knows this stuff inside and out.

Best regards, and thank you for your support.

John @ RBW

On Jan 31, 1:18 pm, William tapebu...@gmail.com wrote:
This is a minor thing, and one that you've probably picked up on, but I
 missed it.

If you were eligible you got a rebate.  You can use that rebate whenever
you like within 120 days, or it's gone.  Moving forward, when you buy
something, you get a rebate credit that you can use within 120 days.
You'll carry a balance, and you choose when you use it and how much to
use, etc.  The thing I missed is that on any invoice where you use any
rebate money, you don't earn rebate credit, no matter how big the invoice.

Example.  You have a tiny $5 rebate, and you want to buy something cheap,
like a $6 tube, and something expensive like a $2000 Atlantis frame.  If
you put that on the same invoice, and use your rebate to pay for part of
it, you get no rebate credit on your balance.

Instead, the way you should do it (and Riv states it clearly on the rebate
pagehttp://rivbike.tumblr.com/rebates) is to put the tube on one invoice,
use your rebate and pay then net $1.  Buy the Atlantis on another invoice,
so you get your $100 rebate credit.

I went in to Riv HQ on a Saturday, and bought 4 things, used my rebate and
paid ~$100 out of pocket.  Had I split it into two invoices I would have
about 5 bucks in my rebate account.  Not a big deal for me, but it could be
a big deal for you if you are going to throw together a big invoice and use
your rebate on it.  So the general guideline is that when you want to spend
your rebate, try to do it on an invoice that totals up to something close
 to your rebate balance.

[RBW] Re: Nuance of the rebate system

2012-02-01 Thread Bill Carter
John,
Normally when stores try to sign me up for their benefits programs I
decline for this very reason. Life's too complicated already, and
it's just too much to keep up with. But I have seen such programs work
quite well, like the one with the drug store that my wife and I
frequent. Because we are regular customers we get a very nice discount
on everything we buy (other than Rx's) simply by giving them our
discount cards to scan, or if we forget the card a phone number works
in their system just as well. After many years in sales, marketing
and customer service, I can say that any customer benefit program that
becomes too much nuisance and complication rapidly devolves from a
positive to a negative for customer retention and goodwill. Just
stating a general proposition. Make your own application and use your
own judgement, just remember the KISS principle. It became cliche for
good reason.

Re: [RBW] Re: Nuance of the rebate system

2012-02-01 Thread René Sterental
The way I'd like to see the system be implemented, if possible, would be
similar to the way airline miles work. As long as I keep placing new orders
before the 120 days expire, my rebate points never die. When I have enough
for a new order, that's when I activate them and use them. This way I can
wait until I have enough and minimize the hassle of having to split orders
to match the rebate points I have.

This would be a win-win scenario. RBW gets the recurring orders and we get
to use our rebates whenever we want as long as we don't let them expire.

[RBW] Re: Nuance of the rebate system

2012-02-01 Thread John Bennett
Dear René and Bill and everyone,

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. Much appreciated. We are
working within the limitations of the system (Volusion) that allows us
to run our own web site and ordering system in-house.

In-house means us. Mostly Dave. There may be ways to do some of the
things that bigger businesses do with their benefits programs, and
we're continually exploring those options.

By keeping it in-house, we can also keep it affordable, which, in
turn, allows us to keep the wolf from the door in every sense of the
expression. That said, we certainly don't want to discourage business
by complicating something that should be simple.

I promise you: if there's an easier, cleaner way to do something, and
it doesn't cost a qazillion dollars to do it, that's always the way we
will be heading. Thank you for your patience and continued support
while we steer the boat in that direction.

Best regards,

John @ RBW

Re: [RBW] Riding around Honolulu

2012-02-01 Thread Robert F. Harrison
Here's one I just mapped. It's a nice waterfront city ride that will take
you from your hotel along the waterfront to chinatown, loop back through
the heart of the old red light district, the state capital, Iolani Palace,
and then take you back the way you came. Stop at Aloha Tower for a bite to
eat.

http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/67127776

There are some bits of sidewalk, shared bike path, and road in this...it's
NOT a training ride or a go fast ride. Basically I do this route (more or
less) a lot both get around the city and for sunset views. Some of the
places on the route don't show paths, but they are there. I ride 'em all
the time. :-)

You'll get great views of Diamond Head and you can make bike porn if you
like...this image which I've shown here before is on this route:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/4339440167/

This is one of the two or three easy tourist rides I take folks one to see
the city.

I'll map an around Diamond Head route next.

I wish I were going to be in town, but I'll be finishing up my Oregon Coast
ride and flying into San Francisco for a week while you are out here. Rats!

Aloha,

Re: [RBW] Riding around Honolulu

2012-02-01 Thread Robert F. Harrison
Here's another, this time from your hotel around Diamond Head. Be careful
riding through Waikiki, drivers are nuts and there's a lot of commercial
traffic. Feel free to take the lane though when necessary or you get stuck
behind traffic turning right off Kalakaua to hotels. You'll have lots of
opportunities to stop and make images if you like though.

http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/67132370

Once you are around Diamond Head I've taken you down a bike path on the
back side of the Ala Wai golf course. There is a bike path running on the
other side which might be more scenic but which also has a lot more traffic
and possibilities for getting doored. I prefer this path - I'm on it
several times a week getting around town (though I don't do Diamond Head
daily).

You can also extend this ride a bit and see how some of the well off live
by forgoing the immediate turn back around Diamond Head and continuing
straight down Kahala Ave till you get to the next park - then turn around
head back, take the turn around Diamond Head and finish the ride as mapped.

[RBW] Pavement/dirt; fat/skinny; hard/soft: what are your likes?

2012-02-01 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I just took a nice 22 mile out and back, 3/4 dirt, along our Rio
Grande bosque trails and fire roads: wonderful ride. I find that I am
considerably less tempted to do the time trial schtick on dirt than I
am on pavement, making for a more pleasant ride and -- mirabile dictu!
-- fast, comfortable mini time trials on the way back, on dirt,
thanks to having given myself ample time to warm up.

But enough about me. After riding the (insert name of non-Rivendell,
but IMO very Rivendellish, tigg'd, Salsa model here -- steel! steel!
It's steel!!) with the skinny Sun Rhyno wheelset with 40 mm Ritchey
Speed Maxes for a couple of months, I finally got around to going to
the fabric store and buying a roll of 1 1/2' ribbon wherewith to
provide the SnoCat SLs with rim strips (I was tempted to buy some very
pretty brocade type ribbon but saved my $$ and bought basic black) so
I could re-install the Big Apples. Today's ride was on the BA wheelset
at about 12/18 psi, and I was once again surprised and pleased at how
well the 60 mm BAs roll; on pavement -- tho' they are faster at a few
psi more: say 20/25 -- but especially on firm dirt and gravel; I swear
up and down that they roll ***as well*** on the sub 1 sand, packed
clay, woodcut debris and light gravel of the route I took as they do
(at 12/18) on smooth pavement. (As I was cruising at 18 mph on the
gravel verge of the bike path, a youngster passed me (on pavement) and
said, Nice beast!) Me, I'd rather push a soft BA on pavement than
push a hard, skinny, sub 50 mm tire on dirt.

So, what's y'all's preference for combination on/off road riding? Fat

thanks to having given myself ample time to warm up.

But enough about me. After riding the (insert name of non-Rivendell,

the fabric store and buying a roll of 1 1/2' ribbon wherewith to
provide the SnoCat SLs with rim strips (I was tempted to buy some very
pretty brocade type ribbon but saved my $$ and bought basic black) so
I could re-install the Big Apples.

Fat

They provide protection in the sense I didn't know something was amiss
until the tire actually went flat. Maybe if I was really in-tune with
my tire pressure I'd have noticed my bi-weekly fill up needed a little
more air than usual. Patching is easy though. I think as long as I
use air in my tires and not cement an annual flat is just a part of
bicycle riding.

Also use 700 x35 marathon supreme in front and have two flats in two
years, keep at about 50 to 60 lbs. Not bad.

Let me know if you want longer routes - I don't know how much time you will
actually have for riding so I didn't do any long ones. You can find plenty
on mapmyride, but sometimes find the entrance to bike paths can be a little
odd (Pearl Harbor comes to mind).

In any case, the things to watch out for on the chinatown ride are the bits
where you actually will be on a sidewalk (for a bit on Ala Moana Blvd) or
where it's not completely obvious that you can get into the park (Ala Moana
and Kakaako).

What I may do it take one of my new cameras out in the next couple of weeks
and put together a blog post with images on what to watch for on each of
those routes. It'd be an okay resource for me as you aren't the only person
who has asked. :-) Map tracks are okay, but sometimes a picture of which
gate to go through makes it a lot easier. :-)

As for the cosmic balance, I'm thinking that because Hawaii is so small
only a couple of Riv riders (or BF riders for that matter) can be here at
one time. Since you are coming, one of us has to go. :-)

I have been using them for a couple of months now. Reviewed the movie that
shows how to install them (just do a search online and you'll find it) as
well as some additional clips that show how to fix punctures using a match
instead of patches. I'm currently using them on the Betty and the
Hunqapillar. Haven't had any flats yet and this isn't goat-head season so
can't speak on that regard. On the Hunqapillar I'm using Marathon Duremes
40 which are puncture resistant anyway but in the Betty I'm running red
Hetres. Not a lot of mileage, unfortunately, but no issues whatsoever.
Perhaps they tend to lose air a bit faster than the Schwalbe tubes I was
using, but not a big deal. Had two Schwalbe tubes slowly deflate overnight
with no apparent punctures, perhaps just a bad batch or some micro-puncture
I couldn't detect with the usual methods.

I'll throw something next time I've got a couple of hours to ride those

be perfect for this as the images can be pinpointed on a map when you are
in doubt.

It's not so much that I was planning on this but covers so many bases it
seems like a good idea...besides as Manny might say, pictures prove these
routes exist. :-) Let's see...

1. I need practice with my new camera before I go to Oregon.
2. Other folks ask me about rides in Honolulu.
3. I need stuff to put in my blog anyway.
4. And oh yeah, you'll be able to use it.

Seems like a win-win.

I do enjoy climbs but I'm still quite slow. If you think a ride is worth
doing, don't exclude it because there are climbs. If all works out well,
I'll be able to do an absolute maximum of 5 rides, with 3 or 4 being more
realistic. The more options I have available, the better it will be!

I just got a Fuji X100 which I plan to bring on my rides in addition to my

maps with photos to prove those rides exist.

If you think you'd be interested I'll the route to and from the start.
That's only a couple of miles from your hotel. I actually live right near
the start.

Sounds like you have a new objective for 2012!!!

I just got a Fuji X100 which I plan to bring on my rides in addition to my
iPhone. Have read great things about the S100. Looking forwards to those
maps with photos to prove those rides exist.

[RBW] Re: Foss tubes

2012-02-01 Thread MobileBill
You may know already, and forgive me if you do, but for the longest, I
didn't know: Schwalbe tubes have the bonus feature of a removable
stem. I spent many months trying to find punctures in my Schwalbe
tubes until I finally recognized that the problem was a slow leak from
a loose valve stem (which can loosen when you take the cap off
carelessly, or put the pump on wrong). Embarrassing, but boy was it
nice to get it figured out finally. A couple of good twists with the
needle nose ( there's a squared off space on the stem) may end your
mysterious spate of flats.
