[RBW] Alternative Bars for the Clem

2018-03-01 Thread Vincent Tamer

Hello, I am proud Clem owner! It's truly a great bike for me and I am so
glad Riv made an "affordable" bike :D

I am curious if anyone has tried a different bar setup on a Clem,
specifically an inverted albatross. I am wondering if they are as close to
the Boscos in comfort.

Boscos are super comfy, but aren't the coolest lookin bars. I know that
Clem was designed for the Boscos, I don't want to throw a wrench in the
design just for aesthetics!

Here is my Mustard Clem in the Mustard Field:

Yep yep, that was Will's recommendation for my Chev, too. He has a Paul Racer
on the front of his, but he doesn't consider them any stronger than sidepulls.
The unspoken impression I got was he thinks all the cable hanger gymnastics
aren't worth the bother.

[RBW] Re: Flickstand alternatives? How to keep the front stable while not moving?

2018-03-01 Thread Dave Redmon
Even quicker is using a strong, light parking band spanning the distance
from the backside of the handlebar to the front side of the brake lever. i
use a high quality bungee looped through a section of inner tube which I
then slip onto the handlebar opposite my front brake lever. i don't use a
kickstand, so when i park I lift the looped bungee over the end of the
brake lever, which locks the brakes quite firmly and holds the entire
bicycle rigidly against a wall or post. (I prefer to allow only the edge of
the handlebar to touch the wall or post, eliminating frame scratches.) I
use a 8"-10" section of strong, high-quality bungee looped through a
section of old inner tube a bit larger in diameter than my handlebar. Be
sure to place the section of inner tube into the bungee loop before you
join the ends of the bungee. . Hold opposite ends of the bungee in a
circle, place both ends in a bench vise or vice grips, then join them by
wrapping hemp twine tightly around the two compressed bungee ends, knotting
as you go.. My parking bands are inconspicuous, out of the way, and have
been in use for several years. Works on any handlebar with any type of
brake lever. By the way, those pony tail loops found everywhere these days
are rarely strong enough to work properly.

[RBW] Re: wtb: Homer Hilsen - 59cm

2018-03-01 Thread ted
Fair enough. I’d say the most significant difference in those bikes would be
the style of brakes and the slope of the top tube. Reasonable folks could
easily have different preferences. Beyond that there are aesthetic differences,
I think even between different vintages of the same model. Of course aesthetics
and the weight one gives therm are also a personal choice.
Me, I really really like my late toyo ahh and I wouldn’t trade it for a sam and
an appropriate cash differential.

[RBW] Frank Jones brake choices

2018-03-01 Thread ted
I’ll probably end up with the 559s. I prefer the side pull cable route in the
rear over using a seat lug bolt mounted cable hanger. But as rbw are out of
stock at the moment I may start out with the mafac raid I’ve got in my parts
stash. If you are trying to max out the tire size with fenders, center pull
probly gives better room than dual pivot side pulls.

I also have a converted Riv Road. I’m running Panaracer Gravel Kings on mine

[RBW] ISO: Carradice SQR clamps for >32 mm post

2018-03-01 Thread Patrick Moore
Does anyone have an unused pair? I can trade a pair of the =< 32 mm clamps,
new, unused. Or I can pay or trade something.

I'd rather not send to England for a pair and, besides, SJS seems no longer
to list them in the larger size. I bought a pair of the >32mm size from SJS
for the Dahon's seat mast, and I want to try to take another pair apart to
install them on the steering mast, for SQRs front and rear (and wouldn't
that be keen?).

Thanks.

Tim answered my question.

And it won't fit my Dahon anyway.

But back to the VO and other spring devices (I like the VO because the
clamp is plastic): do these work with a floppy fork with a heavy-ish front
load? I just rode back from Sprout's with 23 lb in front lowriders on what
I assume is a mid-trail Rivendell; floppiness tended to occur (so to
speak). Would one of these spring things keep 23 lb from flopping around,
yet not interfere with handling?

[RBW] Re: Frank Jones brake choices

2018-03-01 Thread Jeremy Tavan
I have just picked up a set of Tektro R737 long-reach calipers for Frank.
On their web site they're indicated as 47-59mm reach, but when I picked up
the box it indicated 57mm max reach. A quick mock-up fit seems to indicate
that they WILL reach the rims, but I'm a little concerned and will report
back. If they don't work out, I'll go with Dia-Compe 610 centerpulls. I'm
not a huge fan of the extra-long-reach sidepulls. This is a bike where I
really wish they'd gone with canti brakes.

better fender clearance than R559 sidepulls.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Rivendell Road Bike -56cm

2018-03-01 Thread Tim Gavin
You'd need long-reach brake calipers (Tektro R559, Paul Racer, MAFAC Raid,
or Weinmann/DC centerpull) and 650b wheels to convert this bike to 650b.

My '97 Road Standard has tighter clearances than many (700 x 28 is tight),
and it clears a 650 x 38. Others, with more generous tire clearance, have
successfully fit 650 x 42 tires.

Hi Erl,

I know you've posted in the past, but what's the max tire size for 700C?
what about if you switch it to 650B? what parts would you need to take it

Re: [RBW] Re: Flickstand alternatives? How to keep the front stable while not moving?

2018-03-01 Thread Dave
I've been using a Hebie Wheel Stabilizer on my 55 cheviot for a while, and
aside from the occasional need to reinstall some protection under the
downtube metal strap, it's been
solid: http://www.hebie.de/en/parking/stand-accessories/steer-damper/695/

I believe I found mine on ebay, and while it's nearly identical to the VO
model, I like the metal downtube bit vs. the plastic downtube bit.

Found one. Love this group. Thanks to everyone for reaching out!

As to the discussion between the m1 & m18. I went with the M1 because in
can be used as a rear rack or front. I should have mentioned that. I'm
planning to use it for a saddle bag I'm making to store clothes in on my
trip around Japan next month.

All the best,

[RBW] FS: Nitto Front Racks - 32f & M18

2018-03-01 Thread David B
I started cleaning out my garage the other day. Way too much stuff sitting
around without a bike to call home.
Starting with a couple Nitto racks.

Nitto Campee 32f - the one Riv sells as the 'mini-front', lighty used, nice
condition - $100 shipped

Nitto M18 Rack - lightly used, 2-strut version - $80 shipped

I *think* I have Nitto p-clamps that I can include with either rack.

Paypal for payment please. Regular goods/services is fine.
Contact offlist if you can.
Thanks!
David

Re: [RBW] Re: Riv request for store credits

2018-03-01 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I miss Ibex and am grateful for each and every one of their items I bought
over the years, be that online or on Ebay or wherever. I never quite
warmed up (so to speak) to their more formal shirts and I know sizing could
be tricky with pants and such. There were more misses in their execution
than I would have liked but when they got it right, it was perfect, perfect
for me anyway. Their jackets and vests were especially good. I miss
them...

I think on the store front issue, in Denver anyway, they took a chance and
lost. Their store was positioned, as I remember it, in a line of pricey
but things-in-common types of stores, including an Arc'teryx store (of all
things) on the high end, and an Eddie Bauer at the lower end. I think they
were just trying to get in front of people who might have the funds to
support the business model. We take our chances...

I do agree that their normal prices were probably too high - and the sales
a little too often. They probably should have found a lower-middle ground
on pricing and held that ground a bit better. That is something of a
lesson for most businesses, especially these days.

Bike and Riv content... I rode my Appaloosa the other day in my lightweight
but tough and windproof Ibex jacket, that over one of their amazing
Woolaire vests. Both bike and clothes were absolutely perfect...

[RBW] Re: WTB Nitto M1 Mark Rack

2018-03-01 Thread Bill Lindsay
In my humble opinion, it is completely obvious that the Marks Rack with TWO
platform struts is identical to the M18 in load capacity. It is also
obvious to me that the Marks Rack with FOUR platform struts is much much
stronger than the M18 as it pertains to load capacity. The fact that
Vendor A says one load capacity for the Marks Rack and Vendor B says
something much greater for the M18 tells me NOTHING about the racks and
EVERYTHING about the two vendors. Rivendell likes you more and cares more
about your safety than they do about your money. Whoever says the M18 is
three to four times stronger than the Marks Rack cares more about selling
you something and less about you. In my humble opinion.

Re: [RBW] Re: Flickstand alternatives? How to keep the front stable while not moving?

2018-03-01 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, Tom. I see that the Eco 3 had what looks like a molded aluminum
frame; my Hon Solo has a steel tube "backbone", 39 mm IIRC, and a VO model
ought to fit that. As for room at the bottom of the headset, I think
there's room; so the question remains whether it really works to keep the
wheel from flopping.

I use the Hon Solo as a grocery getter, and it does have a particularly
floppy front wheel.

turn all the way to the right or left, causing the bike to move and fall.

Perhaps the solution is to somehow lock the front wheel to the down

something called Flickstand. It doesn't exist anymore.

How do you folks deal with this situation? Velcro the wheel to down

[RBW] Re: wtb: Homer Hilsen - 59cm

2018-03-01 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I do not know for a fact if the Hilsen and the Hilborne share the same
tubing, but based on the catalog copy, the Hilsen leaning road and the
Hilborne leaning fire road gravel grind, I assume the Sam has a beefier
fork for sure, and probably other more substantial frame tubing as well.
If, as I suspect is true of many, most of the OP's miles are on pavement
and some hard pack, and not multi-day rides laden with supplies on rutted
dirt and trails, a Hilsen would be sweet and plenty versatile enough.

I think it comes down to, you either believe and/or experience tubing
diameters and thicknesses, or, perhaps, the weight of a given frameset, has
a noticeable effect on ride quality, or you don't. At some point in the
spectrum, of course, it does. Where in that spectrum a particular rider is
able to discern the difference is the issue (as well as how much it
matters; to me, these days, less and less.) Sure build will affect things.
My Treklantis weighs in the neighborhood of 36 pounds with racks, bags,
fenders, lights, tools, water bottle. But even without all that, it has a
different ride quality than my 1980s sport touring Kuwahara did. Almost
identical geos (the Trekendell being almost identical to an Atlantis), but
different tubesets. The Trek (a 1990s Mulltitrack 750, aka Trek 520 in
another life, now sporting 26" wheels and a Riv fork) is lugged OS and the
Kuwahara Ishiwata 022. But in terms of how a build affects the ride, I will
say that the Rat Trap Pass on the Atlantrek make it pretty much just as fun
to ride burdened as the Kuwahara. I like the variety, which is the thing
that allows me to, well, enjoy the variety!;^) But, getting a bike you
like, when we have that luxury, can be a big factor, obviously. Hence RBW.

Jeez, I hope I got affect and effect right. My brain is not what it once
was.

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe G-One Speed tire & Atlantis

2018-03-01 Thread Gabriel Bruguier
Matt-- I've been wondering the same thing about the G-one tires on my
Atlantis! I want to offer two bits of information that might be helpful.

Mine's an '03, 58cm, 700c version.

First, when I bought it, the previous owner reported that he had ran 2.35s
with no problem. No fender clearance, but they fit the frame.

Second, in the shop one night, a friend brought in his gravel bike with
2.25 knobbies on it. I put the front wheel on the Atlantis and there was
plenty of clearance all around (but not enough for a fender). I can only
assume it is the same in the rear.

I'd say go for it, and post lots of pictures!

Thanks, Lum. Will this work with a canti-Sam, attaching to the external

Oh, is this one near and dear to my heart! I am just a jump on, jump off
kinda gal, so all the fiddly solutions were not going to work long term for
me. I bought a Flickstand off eBay before I installed fenders, so that
lasted about a month (still have it for sale if anyone is interested). As
of right now my 60cm Cheviot, aka Heidi, is sporting the Velo Orange
solution which works pretty well. I did go to the hardware store and
purchase the same spring in silver and I am working on a replacement spring
cover in an appropriate color as Heidi doesn't look good in black.

P.S. I use an Axa frame lock to further facilitate the 'jump on, jump off'
way and the bike is heavy enough, no one is slinging it over their shoulder
and running off, at least where I live.

Re: [RBW] Spring Has Sprung in Tidewater, VA

2018-03-01 Thread phil k
I loved growing up in Virginia Beach. I used to ride along the Dismal Swamp
Trail, right along route 17, into South Mills, North Carolina and ride
back. When I would come home for breaks during college, my friends and I
would meet at the Dairy Queen in Ghent at night, and ride around downtown
Norfolk, which would be completely deserted. Seems to be more restaurants
and night life, and more busy these days though,

I also liked riding along First Landing Park.
