[RBW] Re: Orange Roadini

2018-08-15 Thread Joe Bernard
Btw, I know this is supposed to be a dropbar bike with more seatpost showing,
but I highly recommend sizing up and putting sweepy-back bars on for that path
racer vibe. Do I have standover clearance? Pfft, no way. It's light and will
never have big racks and bags on it, so it's no big deal to tip it sideways for
on/off.

I'm not saying it's the "better" way to size and outfit a Roadini, I'm just
saying don't get too locked into "it's a road bike" and miss out if that phrase
doesn't fit you. It's light, zippy-yet-stable, great name, great headbadge, and
now in a fabulous orange. It's just a great bike, and cheap!

[RBW] Re: Orange Roadini

2018-08-15 Thread Joe Bernard
LGF: It's certainly lighter/snappier than my Clem, as it should be, they're
completely different bikes.

Of the Rivs I've owned Roadini is most like Romulus, Ram, and Saluki/AHH. It
compares favorably as a road bike to the Cheviot, too, although that bike's
longer wheelbase and mixte look give it such a singular personality that my
brain didn't record it as "road bike". Which probably only makes sense in MY
brain..

GreetingsI'm somewhat baffled by the clamp size on a used choco-norm I picked
up here on the list. From what I read, the bar is sized at 25.4mm, however I
seem to only be able to get my 26.0 stems around it. Further the bar as I
purchased it has scratches all around it from, what looks like, attempting to
install it on a stem that's too narrow for it.
Did the earlier choco's come in a 26.0mm sleeve size?

This usually works for me too but only if factoring in tire clearance. For
instance a 60cm cross check has a headtube (not counting the extension
above the TT) that looks about the same length as a 57cm classic 80's road
bike, but that's because the cross check has an axle-to-crown distance of
like 400mm. Same thing would be true of the Quickbeam since it has similar
tire clearance, except it has a 2' upslope to the tt which cancels that out
and makes the HT look normal for the size again.

I looked at that Ben's Cycle listing for a SRAM freehub. I'd bet a dollar
that IF it's really gold in color, like that picture, that it is not in
fact steel. I don't know of a way to make steel be that color. That's a
picture of an aluminum freehub body. If the item you are actually buying
looks alot different from the photo, then maybe it's steel. They might be
referring to the drivering itself, with the ratchet splines, which most
certainly is steel.

probably give them a shot, but if Riv had asked me to spec their Silver
rear hub, I would have advised a steel driveshell for this reason. One
less thing to have to talk about. The gram savings mean nothing in the
context of a Rivendell. Maybe this particular alloy driveshell is "just
 as
rugged", or close enough, but maybe it's not. Steel would not have been
less rugged, and would have been heavier. The handwringers will wring
hands more over alloy than they would have over the heavier weight.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Silver Hubs

2018-08-15 Thread Jeremy Till
I've been researching the possibility of getting a cromo freehub body for
Silver hubs and haven't actually come up with a solution but do have a
couple of leads:

1. After some sleuthing I have come to believe that the Silver hubs were
manufactured by KT, a Taiwanese company that manufacturers hubs for a
number of other brands, and whose website used to show a cromoly
replacement freehub with the same mechanism as the Silver ones. I emailed
them about the possibility of getting one in the U.S. and was directed to
HiFi wheels, a boutique wheel builder in Portland whom I assume is a North
American agent for KT. They don't list the freehub bodies on their
website, and they never responded to my email inquiry. You may have better
luck--let us know if you do!

http://ridehifi.com/

2. I have recently discovered that the SRAM S40/60/80 wheels seem to have
used a KT hub with the same freehub mechanism, and that there is a
replacement freehub body out there that looks like the Silver one and is
listed as being steel:

https://www.benscycle.com/sram-s406080-910-speed-freehub-body-and-seal/freehub_body_sram_freehub_bodies_8116_fw4553/product

(It's listed in the QBP catalog and thus is available from a number of
vendors, this is just the first one that showed the material). Buying this
was going to be my next attempt (haven't do so yet), but I will say that I
have no idea if it is actually going to work on a Silver hub and if it is
indeed steel. If you buy one, let us know how it works out!

[RBW] Re: How do Rivendells fare fenderless on dry salty winter roads?

2018-08-15 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Probably better to just put them on for the salty season.
I definitely don't want to ride another kind of bike since my commutes are
22 miles round trip and I love my Rambouillet for that.
I am careful about mounting fenders and my Sheldon Fender Nuts are still on
the bike so easy on/easy off. Nothing to complain about.
Glad I kept my fenders/rack/decaleur/Berthoud bag!!!
Lately been riding fenderless/rackless with banana sax.
Just bought a Roadeo so will switch banana sax to that and fender up the
Rambouillet for the winter.

I bought my Rivendells to ride. Period. In all seriousness, the immense amount
of sweat that pours off of me onto my bike on every single ride I ever take,
causes corrosion on all my bikes. The anodizing on the headset on my Hilsen has
all flaked off from said sweat. I don't have a special car I drive on salty
winter roads either.

I have a pass and stow rack with a basket and a swift basket bag that has
all my regular stuff in it always (pump/tools/u-lock/jacket/etc.).
Randomly, i rode without the bag for the first time in like a year
yesterday and was kind of blown away by how much nicer the bike feels
without that weight up there for regular riding.

[RBW] Grant is asking us to not run baskets on Nitto Racks

2018-08-15 Thread Vincent Tamer
I have the Nitto m18 on my Clem and it works just fine. There have been only a
few occasions that I’ve overloaded it but that was on smooth surface riding so
no biggie. That being said I’m going to be a bit more weight conscious of my
basket loads from now on.

I wonder if the Riv staff will be removing their baskets in order to set a good
example? I can see that being a burden as many of us are quite dependent on the
basket setup.

[RBW] FS: Nitto Big Front Rack and hardware (also short Technomic)

2018-08-15 Thread ctifusion
I was looking for an trade on this but I'll just put this up to see if
anyone is interested. Out of stock on the Riv site. This is as new, maybe a
couple very small scratches but nothing noticeable. Installed and ridden
with bags 4 times. Too much rack for the build I'm looking for. This one
will hold a basket! (I guess I don't know that for sure but give me a
break, it's a super strong and beautiful rack).

Included are the long screws and spacers to fit at the bottom, and P-clams
and screws for the fork blades. I also purchased the extra hardware ($38)
to direct mount it but I couldn't figure out how to get that to work on the
MITlantis, I thought I had it figured and I cut the struts, so you'll get
the short struts and the other hardware.

$185 shipped in the lower 48. I will ship it in the original box with
shipping material from Riv.

I should also mention that I have a short Technomic (5cm/25.4) As new,
installed once. $30 shipped in lower 48.

PM me or respond to this with questions. Paypal F

Best,
Brynnar

I agree that a rack with a strut to the hub area would help immensely, but I've
recently changed the rack on my new Polyvalent to the SOMA Demi Porteur and I
can say that removing the hub area strut, smooths the ride out drastically.
You can have the swoopiest, gracefully curved fork soaking up the Bumps, but a
simple rack strut can seriously take the fun out of the party. ;-(

Andy, what fenders are you using on your ram with the Stampede Passes? I
just picked up a Ram that is running 28's (Ruffy Tuffy) with super narrow
(35mm?) hammered Honjos and Shimano sidepulls, and I definitely couldn't go
any wider with the current setup, but like I'll of us I'm contemplating
what a switch to centerpulls and wider fenders would let me get away with.
I'd want to stick with hammered fenders though, since they just look so
right on the current setup!

[RBW] Re: Grant is asking us to not run baskets on Nitto Racks

2018-08-15 Thread Jeremy Till
I've become a front-rack-and-basket devotee over the past couple of years,
and the Medium Shop Sack has become my go-to commuting bag; it's definitely
the most convenient setup I've used. My daily commuting load is pretty
light, but occasionally I'll stop for groceries or beer on the way home,
and I'm probably well past the stated limits then. In that case, the ride
home is generally short and paved. If I'm using the basket on a longer
ride or off-road, I try to keep the load light: extra clothes, generally.

[RBW] Re: Grant is asking us to not run baskets on Nitto Racks

2018-08-15 Thread Collin A
Yeah, something to move the load transfer point closer to the center of the
load would help in that, but then you limit your ability run hub area or
low rider racks (depending on the configuration of said racks). Nitto's big
front rack, Surly's front, or the pricier Pass rack all fit the bill
and can handle larger loads than the rando-style racks. Even moving the
struts that are on the furthest edge to the center of the rack could help
in increasing the operating capacity (see Nitto R-14)

Front loading is nice, but I am still in the boat of putting heavier loads
on the rear rack where it has less of an affect on handling and a lower
consequence of failure.

[RBW] Re: Effect of reach from changing stem length vs raising/lowering

2018-08-15 Thread Sean Steinle
Thanks for the advice so far. In my area, I honestly wouldn't trust anyone
to do a good bike fit. Maybe I'm wrong. The only shops in my area are
Specialized/Trek/Giant shops and I've just been unimpressed with the
answers to most of my questions.

I went home and measured to get exact figures. Top of handlebar is actually
5cms below saddle height, and I took the stem out to measure. It's a
beautiful fillet brazed piece, painted to match the bike. The thing is, the
paint stops below the point where it's currently set, and there's only 3cm
left until you hit the top of the wedge anyways, so I'm pretty sure this is
a quill stem that's not actually meant to be adjustable. It's good to know
that the main thing I can do to feel less stretched is to shorten the stem,
and I'm pretty sure any stem I buy will have 5cm more of adjustability than
the current one to get the bars to saddle height should I desire. My
biggest hangup is taking off this beautiful painted to match stem. I kind
of feel like I should just keep riding for a while to see if I can get used
to it. If I'm honest, I think the stretched out feeling will start to
become more natural, I'm just not sure if I'll get used to the neck craning
having the bars nearly 2 inches below saddle height, combined with them
being far away.

[RBW] Re: Grant is asking us to not run baskets on Nitto Racks

2018-08-15 Thread Philip Williamson
Huh. I have had a basket on that exact rack, and broke the rack at the
center-hole bolt. Took ~14 years and a heavy-handed stranger to break it.
Now my basket is welded on, so I can't really take it off.
When I do bring home a 12 pack, the way is pretty slow and pretty paved.

Do decaleurs really support most of the weight of a rando bag? I don't
believe that, but I've never owned one (since I have an awesome basket).

Re: [RBW] Re: Grant is asking us to not run baskets on Nitto Racks

2018-08-15 Thread Ryan M.
Something like the Nitto big rack or Surly front rack will handle a loaded
basket no problem, but the problem I see is that people are sticking that
kind of load on a small rando rack and then "bikecamping" in some rugged
stuff and the racks have got to eventually fail. They aren't that strong
and only have three mounting points.

I would think something like the Nitto R14 Top Rack would be a really good
basket rack too.

- Ryan, who doesn't really get the huge front loading bias that is going on
now.

[RBW] choco clamp size

2018-08-15 Thread Joe Bernard
They were all spec'd 25.4, but I've found that there's some variation with
Nitto bars and it doesn't take much over-size to become a real headache with
mounting. For instance the Boscos on my Clem fit the clamp but it's tight, and
the OD of the grip area makes sliding levers and grips on a real chore.

Well, kinda what concerns me is that, if they've had issues with it where does
that leave Wald? Most people run racks to support their baskets, because the
Wald struts are not up to the task. (Although typically the Wald attaches to

[RBW] choco clamp size

2018-08-15 Thread jandrews
Greetings
I'm somewhat baffled by the clamp size on a used choco-norm I picked up
here on the list.
>From what I read, the bar is sized at 25.4mm, however I seem to only be
able to get my 26.0 stems around it. Further the bar as I purchased it has
scratches all around it from, what looks like, attempting to install it on
a stem that's too narrow for it.

Did the earlier choco's come in a 26.0mm sleeve size?

Thank you

[RBW] Re: Adding Canti mounts to a Ram???

2018-08-15 Thread Jock Dewey
Hey, RAMBobs:

I have Toyo RAM circa 2004 and it fits Compass 32s and SKS P45 Longboards
just fine.

Will fit 35s as well but that's maybe a little tight for most of you.
Doesn't bother me, but 35s seem a bit much for this bicycle.

[RBW] Saddlesack M Mounting to Spring Saddle

If you have enough space between the bottom of the springs and rack/tire, you
can run the straps through the springs near the bottom instead of the bag
loops.

Re: [RBW] How do Rivendells fare fenderless on dry salty winter roads?

2018-08-15 Thread Tim Gavin
Even well-fitted, full-coverage fenders don't prevent dry salt from getting
all over my bike during a winter road ride. It's like gravel/trail dust in
the summer, it gets everywhere.

That's why I don't ride on the road much in the winter; my primary winter
riding is on trails.

I did go on a group winter road ride last year, and I took my plastic (CF)
gravel bike. It was equipped with 45 Nrth Gravdal studded tires and SKS
P45 longboard fenders (with mudflaps), yet my entire bike was rime-coated
like an ancient mariner after the ~20 mile ride.

And I never ride my steel bikes in the winter. Even a non-ferrous frame
has steel bits (bolts, chain, etc) that show rust pretty quickly, so
frequent washes are best.

It doesn’t work great, or it works fine as long as you are ok losing some of

[RBW] Re: Adding Canti mounts to a Ram???

2018-08-15 Thread ascpgh
I put Paul Racers on my Ram and use Stampede Pass 700 x 32 tires under
fender with clearance.

If you notice, the rear bridge area is not pearl orange, that was due to it
needing to be rebreed this spring. I had it put right back where it was
instead of monkeying with any change in clearance. The chain stay bridge is
of the same clearance and works well as is. Without decals I couldn't do a
true repaint so I just did a panel. I have a real fix on the way.

As for going to bigger tires (removing fenders), I'd read enough about
changes of handling when riding beyond 32mm tires that I stayed right there
with the Stampede Passes.

[RBW] Re: How do Rivendells fare fenderless on dry salty winter roads?

2018-08-15 Thread Julian Westerhout
Lum,

I think you are worrying too much about the risks associated with both
fenders and racks. Properly used and mounted both present very minor risks.

That said, presuming you want to preserve/pamper your Riv's frame and
parts, I would definitely not ride it on salty roads, dry or wet --
although dry is better than wet.

I've not ridden my Rivs in salt, but regularly do with my winter commuter
(a pedestrian MTB) -- and corrosion happens, even with regular cleaning. It
is my experience that there is usually some moisture somewhere even on
"dry" winter roads (occasional runoff from shady spots melting, etc.) if
they've been salted recently enough for the salt to still be on the
pavement.
