[RBW] Dirt droppish questions for smallish impulse buy

2020-06-13 Thread Lucky
Greetings all, allow me to introduce myself as I never really have, but now I
need advice and figure I’m more likely to get it with a proper hallo first.
I got into Bridgestones in my teens (late 80’s early 90’s) and eventually
Rivendell, as is often the way. I like steel bikes of this aesthetic and
currently in the garage have an early Atlantis, my college race bike MB-1,
Bianchi San Jose with a porteur bar, and so on. I like sitting up now due to a
variety of injuries I have incurred over the years.
So today I did that thing we all do occasionally, which was purchase a bike
I’ve coveted for years: a nearly all original Specialized RockCombo, knowing it
wouldn’t fit right. Now. I know that I’m between sizes in RockCombos, and also
that they’re pretty scarce, so I bought this one which is just a hair small.
But...not really, with the stock bar. But I dislike this bar.

Finally! The point of my rambling. Since I brought the bike home I have tried
the following bars with stock stem, in lieu of the too narrow stock Specialized
BB dirt drop: MTB riser, Northroad, Mustache, VO Porteur...none of these are
right. The bike was made for a dirt drop and I want to sit up so...what are my
options? (Besides selling, smarty pants)
Another consideration is the stem is 80mm so I could grab some length that way.
Anyhow, thoughts on various bars please?

Appreciate any input.

But green kills on a Quickbeam. It's almost *supposed* to be that color.

2020-06-13 Thread S
Off-topic, again, but, just to clarify, I deleted my comments because I
want to try and be positive online. My comments couldn't be a help to
anyone, solved no problem, and illuminated no important issues. Also, in
regard to small businesses, I believe in voting with your wallet. It's one
thing to say, for example, "Don't buy that stem, it can break," and another
to question the expertise or sincerity of the people at a company. For all
I know, the people at the company in question read this forum, it's
actually fairly likely, and wouldn't it be a bummer for them to read what I
wrote?

Anyway, energy is limited, may as well try to use it for positive ends.

As long as we're dreaming I vote for the QB decals (no cream headtube) on my
Dove Gray without the red. When I designed the scheme on my bike I was really
into the red and saw the gray as kind of a backdrop for it. Now that I've lived
with it a while I've really grown enamored of the gray itself, it's WAY more
alluring in person than shows up in photos.

Ha, After just seeing Christopher Murray’s HunqaGreen QB I think I retract my
“no cream headtube with cream QB badge statement” but now knowing there’s one
currently out there in that exact color scheme I’m not sure if seeing it and
wanting to duplicate it exactly outweighs the desire to paint my hypothetical

[RBW] Feeler: 62cm Appaloosa

2020-06-13 Thread Reid Echols
Hi folks,

I’ve been riding and enjoying it for a while, but a recently acquired 68cm
Atlantis has me considering parting with my 62cm Appaloosa in blue. Probably
just the frameset but I can probably include some extras if you need something
to get the build going? I see that Riv didn’t do a 62 in the latest run, or in
the upcoming Sam batch, so if you’re looking, let me know. I’m thinking in the
neighborhood of $1000 shipped.

I just have one question,
How will you be able to form a gang with your rivsisters?
I guess you could be the Ironic Misanthropes.

At some point, you are going to look at your bike and wonder how to add more
color.
Cables, pedal, grips and water bottle cages would be my suggestion.
A friend powder coated my water bottle cages for my Riv tandem.

[RBW] Quickbeam Custom Paint Color Help

2020-06-13 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
If I were getting a custom QB but with original cream decals I’d probably have
just as hard a time choosing. Having kinda lusted for a 68cmQB (or custom
equivalent) I’ve pondered this before and here are a few in no particular order:

I’ve really liked the Hunqapillar-Pea-green or “Jay’s Green” (as I think
they’ve maybe called it) and the more recent dark, shimmering, “Chameleon
Green” of Cheviot & Clems but I’ve only seen these in photos and never in
person.

I’m also a fan of that creamy ‘Sage green’ they’ve had on later Sam’s and
Cheviots, but I think they’ve varied somewhat from batch to batch, if I
remember correctly... unless I’m just confused and thinking of sage vs the
Betty Foy blue?

Atlantis blue-green... Haven’t seen one in person but I think I’d really enjoy
an Atlantis colored QB but would skip the cream headtube with the cream filled
QB badge.

Mustard/Butterscotch is what I have on my 65cm Clem and I love it but would
personally choose something else for a custom painted QB to complement my own
Clem.

I’d be more inclined to go with a pale-ish or creamy pink if I had the later
blue decals of the Silver gen QB... Or anything on the lighter side to contrast
with the darker decals. But there’s a certain kind of sunset-kissed-cloud
shade of pink that comes to mind. With the cream filled and gold lettered
decals I’d likely choose something different and darker.

Just looked and there’s some great stuff on the Black Magic galleries on their
webpage... have fun choosing and may you have even more fun riding once all is
said and done!

Best,
Brian Cole

Re: [RBW] Tubulars on Rivendells

2020-06-13 Thread Max S
Well... a few (somewhat) younger folks still riding them, I should hope, self
included!

I’ve ridden tubulars off and on for ~25 years now, mostly 22 mm road tires. In
the last 3-4 years, I’ve been really enjoying 32 mm Vittoria XN, intended for
dry hardpack cross courses, riding them on a mix of dirt roads and paved roads.
I recently also tried a clincher version of the same tire, albeit with butyl
tubes (the sewups have latex). They’re nice, but the sewups are cushier and the
whole wheelset is a bit lighter, FWIW.

If you’re a handy and curious sort and haven’t tried tubulars, I do recommend
giving them a try. Plenty of rim brake wheels should be available for
relatively cheap, as folks switch to disc brakes and tubeless, and high quality
tires 27 mm and wider are available for good prices. If you’d like to get a
racer-y type of bike with narrow clearances to handle a wider range of terrain,
or give it more comfort, tubulars with latex tubes may be a good way to go.

Sourcing tubulars from the UK shops used to be very cost-effective (e.g. 4+ at
a time), but even Excel offers decent prices from time to time. For glue, I
recommend Mastik 1, which has been found in a scientific study to work best.
(Carogna tubular mounting tape has been popular lately, for its relative speed
and cleanliness, but I enjoy the meditative hour or so it takes to refresh the
glue in a rim, a couple of coats on the tires, and mounting.)

Enjoy the ride!

[RBW] Quickbeam Custom Paint Color Help

2020-06-13 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
Birdman,
I strongly suggest you go with a cool green. A splash of metallic would be a
bonus.
I also would discourage you from a contrasting cream head tube; just my
personal bias but factors in significant upgrade cost usually $100+. My
suggestion would be to consider pinstripe outlining the lugs. More bling for
you buck. Not to mention you could do it yourself and bond with the big Ent.

[RBW] Re: Lowrider racks on MIT Atlantis?

2020-06-13 Thread dougP
Dave's problem looks to be solved. I do want to throw in a couple of
things about Tubus racks:

1. The quoted 165 mm fork tip to mid-fork is what Tubus uses. It is a
commonly used dimension but hardly universal. Case in point being Bruce
Gordon racks. The mid fork mount MUST be correctly located for the Duo to
sit level. While the Duo has 3 mounting holes, the adjustment is limited.

2. An advantage of the Tara is it can be used with a bolt on mid fork
mount. No eyelet needed.

3. "Hoopless is hopeless" is a myth, despite being Bruce's stand on the
question. The main tube on the Duo is a much larger diameter, and hence
inherently stiffer, than the tubing on the Tara, which has the hoop. They
actually weigh about the same. The Duo is stiff enough without the hoop.
I've used it with Ortlieb large back rollers, stuffed full for a lodging
trip. The panniers are intended for rear mount & so have limited ground
clearance. OK on pavement; not good on trails.

dougP, (hopelessly hoopless)

[RBW] Re: Lowrider racks on MIT Atlantis?

2020-06-13 Thread 'John Hawrylak' via RBW Owners Bunch
I thought the 'standard' mounting point on the fork was 165mm from the fork
dropout. Bruce Gordon used 7" (178mm) for his front rack, and Waterford
used his spacing in the late 90's and early 2000's.

The RBW braze-ons look too high to fit the racks without odd looking
backward tilt. They should have used 2 braze-ons: 1 for the low rider and
1 for the front rack (mounted higher), penny-wise, pound foolish

[RBW] Quickbeam Custom Paint Color Help

2020-06-13 Thread Ian A
I can get mesmerized by certain colours. As a child and spending time with my
dad in Paris, I used to see small Fiats in pastel torquoise and still love that
colour today. Pink has always been uninteresting to me and I actively abhor
purple hues.

Greens and blues, metallic or flat, would be on my short list. No cream panels
for me though. I quite liked the run of blue Hillbornes that missed the cream
bits. The colour and the uniformity were attractive.

I also really like a bicycle in black. Surly's Long Haul Trucker in
"Blacktackular" appeals to me.

Any colour you like will be right though.

Here is my last experiment the new Tubus Grand Expedition front. While it
can be physically mounted to the low rider braze-on it doesn't really
work. You would really want to mount the rack lower and use a P-clamp
around the fork legs or the Tubus LM-1 clamp on mount. I plan on using this
rack on a Clem H with the LM-1 clamp. It also has a diving board type mount
from the top platform to the fork crown.

Subject: [RBW] Quickbeam Custom Paint Color Help

Hey Bunch,

The bottom bracket shell replacement on my Quickbeam is going well and it will
be headed to wet paint at Black Magic Paint next week. I could use some advice.

For a while I had planned on going with a version of Mark’s custom pink. Next I
was convinced that it should be a PurpleRiv purple. Then I settled on a very
slightly metallic British Racing Green, as an homage to the original QB green
and the to Ents the world over.

Now that the time has come, I’m not so sure anymore. Also, I’m slightly color
blind, so colors are not my strong suit.

Design constraints:
1. I can go with a single coat, or add a 2nd color for the head tube.
2. It will sport the original decals and head badge (gold with cream).
3. I want it to be a color that’s in keeping with the Riv aesthetic and color
pallet.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Isaac in Portland OR

[RBW] Quickbeam Custom Paint Color Help

2020-06-13 Thread lambbo
isaac, how exciting! the pink is so excellent, and a purple would be
outstanding, especially if it were desaturated slightly to be a kind of purple
grey.

however, when it comes down to it you want a forever color, and it is perhaps
undisputed that the sparkly green will forever be incredible.

both pink and purple go very well with green, if done right (desaturated,
again), so i’d recommend making your head tube a light, dusty-brownish-pink,
like the flesh of a tree, or ENT. that would be subtle (almost cream from a
distance) but noticeably beautiful, and very customized.

i’m considering this now for my cheviot!

I didn't say the parts weren't well made. The headsets, cranks, etc, look
nice. But I feel that the design thinking at places such as Riv, Crust,
Black Mountain, etc, is deeper and comes from a more authentic place. VO
seem like trend followers to me. Which, whatever, who cares. Just not the
kind of place I like.

As for originality, *of course*, Grant didn't invent the cyclocross bike or
touring bike. *Of course* he was inspired by other things. But I would say
he put way more thought, way more from-the-ground-up thinking into those
bikes than anything VO has ever done.

Again, though, who cares. I am not telling anyone not to buy VO. If you

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam Custom Paint Color Help

2020-06-13 Thread Joe Bernard
A much longer answer to why I posted my bike's colors:

I found that having the option of doing whatever color(s) I wanted was actually
kind of paralyzing and took a lot of time..there's too many! I had a friend as
a sounding board for ideas, which is similar to what this thread is..that was
helpful. You may not end up with any color we recommend, but the ideas may
expand your possibilities.

Looking at galleries of other paintjobs was the next step and this is how I
settled on my colors. In my case I was focused on Joe Bell's work because he
was my painter, but I recommend his site for anyone planning bike paint. I had
noticed his work on Kirkframes' Instagram, then meandered over to joebell.net
and founded entire galleries of Kirks. There's so many to look at and it
really helped me visualize what was possible. That particular direction may be
even more helpful to you because your bike hews closer to the classic road bike
look of Kirk's frames than mine does.

One thing to be cognizant of is those Quickbeam decals have a whole lotta cream
and gold in them, they're not going to blend well with just any color. Green
definitely works, I was always on the fence about the orange one, and once I
saw yellow which I uhhh didn't get. Choose well and good luck!

I like your thinking on the green! Its a good homage to both Quickbeam the

I think those phone apps angle finders are pretty good. I would just check
using a 2' bubble level.

Place the level on a table and shim the level to get the bubble centered.
Then place the phone on it to see if it reads 0.0°. I not it has a small
offset you can account for. You could also check it with a square on the
level and it should read 90° or a 30-60 right drafting triangle on the
level.

I zero my Wixely 3000 digitial angle finder on a shimmed level.

[RBW] MUSA Shorts fabric?

2020-06-13 Thread Harald Kliems
I love my (old model) MUSA Shorts in many respects. But there are some fit
issues/features that could still be a little better, and it also seems the
(new model) shorts have been out of stock for quite a while. My wonderfully
skilled SO has offered to sew me a pair. One thing I really like about the
shorts is the fabric: Nice texture, much more durable than any other
materials I've tried, quick-dry, ... Does anybody know where I could buy
this kind of fabric? Riv describe it as "quick dry textured nylon," but
searching for that on various fabric websites doesn't really yield anything
promising.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

The product page lists the price as $108.77 per side:

https://global.bluelug.com/nitto-s-rack.html

Both sides are in stock. If I bought one I'd buy both sides. I wouldn't
be scared to run an errand with only one side installed. I use a plastic
Salsa Anything Rack for Growler runs, and so I've ridden my bike a fair bit
with ~3kg on one fork leg, including a short length of single track
switchbacks. An unbalanced front end doesn't ride better, and I can notice
it, but it's not a problem. If I lose control of my bike and crash on a
growler run, it'll probably be because it's my second growler run. ;)

[RBW] Quickbeam Custom Paint Color Help

2020-06-13 Thread Birdman

"This rack sold individually. So I installed only right side, for my daily bike.

Doesn't make it any less of a rack, I just think it's a little irresponsible to
sell lowriders one at a time with balance being so critical to safe and
comfortable steering. Presumably this is an expensive rack, what with all the
points of brazing and complicated bends, but one should buy two.

[RBW] Re: Lowrider racks on MIT Atlantis?

2020-06-13 Thread Dave Johnston
There are versions of the MIT Atlantis that have both Mark's rack braze-ons
and Low rider braze-ons.
Probably can't go wrong with a Tubus Tara.
I can double check to see if a Tubus Duo or Grand expedition will work
sometime this weekend. I have a 53cm still in the box.

2020-06-13 Thread Bill Schairer
I’ve never paid any attention to STA but all the discussions I’ve seen of it
has me curious. I just found this video on an angle finder app for smart
phones - https://youtu.be/zNuGgBwirQ4

I think I’ll have to check it out.
