Congratulations on finishing this beautiful boat. I enjoyed hearing about your

[RBW] Bicycle Commuting

2018-07-21 Thread WETH
Doug,
Yes, any Riv would handle the task well. Having commuted (8 hilly miles each
way) on an LHT, Atlantis, Romulus, and a Cheviot, my favorite is the Cheviot
with Little Big Ben tires, fenders, rear saddlesack and a front basket. A
wonderful bike all around.
Good luck,

This year I’ve been wearing a Shelta hat

off my ears and neck. They have different styles with varying widths in the
side.

[RBW] Re: Dogs on Rivs -- leash "wand"?

2018-07-03 Thread WETH
Patrick,
I sent you a private email, but I will elaborate here. I own the Wally-dog
device in your Amazon link. I used it half a dozen times for a strong 70 lbs
Labrador. It worked well and as advertised. It kept him from getting under
wheel. Some training is needed in getting your dog to “heel” and “stop”
especially big dogs. In the end, my dog was too strong physically and stubborn
for me to safely use it with him. For a smaller, better trained canine, it
would work well. I clamped it to my seatpost with no problem.
Thanks,
Erl

[RBW] 650b vs 700c wide tite thoughts needed.

2018-06-20 Thread WETH
Dear Lum,
I assume you are thinking of converting a bike from 700c to 650b. I’ve
converted two bikes: a riv road and Romulus. I ride Fatty Rumpkins 650bx41 on
the Romulus. Handling feels more stable and the wider tires make for a more
comfortable ride. In terms of safety, I compensated for lower bottom bracket
height by changing my crank arm length from 170 to 165. I liked the feel of
165 so much I changed to that crank length on my Cheviot too. Finally don’t
forget you will likely need to switch brakes if your bike uses center/side
pulls.
Happy to answer other questions.

[RBW] HHH tool kit and other brainstorming

2018-06-19 Thread WETH
Tony,
Excited to learn the HHH is coming along and you are planning more adventures
on it.
Not much to add to your list except:
-Sunscreen: always keep a container in my bike bags.
-ziplock bags (sandwich and larger size) for stowing my phone or camera in if I
get caught in a deluge or need to ride through one. ( larger trash bag
too-always keep one in my large saddle sack.
-chain lube small bottle. My chain never fails to squeak on a longer outing.
Given you and I share drive train maintenance philosophy, I like to have some
lube to quiet things as needed.

[RBW] What frame and build set make you a safer, slower rider?

2018-06-02 Thread WETH
John,
I would say it’s more handlebar dependent than frame, as most Riv frames ride
well with swept back bars. I find handlebars that sweep back allow for a more
relaxed upright riding position, while also allowing for a more aggressive
riding style when gripped closer to the stem. Think albatross, bosco, Billie
bars et al. I find my Cheviot with swept back bars allows me to ride slowly
and steadily in congested areas and then to ride more aggressively when
conditions allow.
Photos here: https://flickr.com/photos/86975051@N08/sets/72157665232090983
I think any frame and bar combo that allows more upright riding will fullfill
your goal. You might have to experiment a bit with bar choice, but that’s part
of the fun!
All the best,
Erl

[RBW] Re: Balance Bike Delight

2018-05-05 Thread WETH
Mike,
Put a smile on my face reading about it.

Patrick,
Congrats on the whole family being ready for Clementines!

10 years ago my youngest was struggling to ride a bike. I wasn’t clued into to
balance bikes, so I picked up a 2 wheel razor scooter for $5 at a yard sale.
He learned the principles of balance riding that and then took effortlessly to
a two wheel bike.

All the best,
Erl

2018-05-02 Thread WETH
I’ve owned four: Early generation Atlantis, Road Standard, Romulus converted to

I sold the Atlantis and the Road.
The Cheviot is my favorite. It is stable and smooth. It can handle a load well
and fits 700x50 Big Bens with fenders (some hacking required).

I’m with Joe on dreaming about a red Cheviot with Wilbury lugs!!

2018-03-01 Thread WETH
Hi Minh,
Max tires size for 700 is 28. When I converted to 650b, I fit Panaracer Col de
La Vie tires which are sold as 38, but I think measured closer to 36. Some of
my photos show the bike set up as 650b with SKS fenders. Only parts I needed
to convert from 700 to 650b were the longer tektro brakes and a wheel set.
(Brakes I am including work for 700 but not 650b wheels.) I Depending on your
crank arm length you might get some pedal strike pedaling through a corner.
Thanks for asking and hoped this helped,
Erl

[RBW] Albastache (or Moustache) Brake Lever Positions

2018-02-10 Thread WETH
Maxwell,
In order to get my albastache bars a bit higher and closer, I run them "upside
down" or flipped. You could swap in a stem with more rise and that could get
you the height/reach that is more comfortable while keeping brake levers out
front. Sorry I can't address your question about brake levers on the swept
back portion of the bars. https://flic.kr/p/XrqQ35
Best wishes,
Erl

[RBW] Cowboy Trail NE, Goatheads, tire choice

2018-02-04 Thread WETH
Patricks and Tim,
Thanks for the info. I'll do some reading on Orange Seal and tubes with
removable valve cores.
Dean,
I appreciate the info from your ride. From the reading I've done, it seems
portions of the western section (Atkinson to Valentine) are afflicted with
vegetation and thorns on the trail. Apparently a state highway runs parallel
to the trail in sections and is used by some riders weary of flats and rougher
trail surfaces.
Thanks,
Erl

[RBW] Cowboy Trail NE, Goatheads, tire choice

2018-02-03 Thread WETH
My son and I plan on riding several of the country's (USA) railtrails this
summer, including the Cowboy Trail in Nebraska.
http://www.bikecowboytrail.com/default.aspx

Previous riders of this trail have reported in online journals that there are
thorns and "goatheads" in several sections that caused multiple flats or made
folks happy they used tubeless tires. I'm an Easterner who has no goathead
experience. I also do not run tubeless tires and do not own any tubeless
compatible rims. I also would rather not mess with sealant in my tubes.

What, if any, 700x35-40 tires have proved goathead resistant with tubes and no
sealant in the tubes? Schwalbe Marathon Mondials?

Has anyone ridden the entirety of the Cowboy Trail who can substantiate the
severity of goatheads along the way? Recommend tires?

The Riv bikes we will be riding have Little Big Bens. Should I stick with
those, bring a gross of tubes, and try to improve my flat fixing time?

Thanks,
Erl

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Road Bike -56cm

2018-01-14 Thread WETH
Complete bike: $1500 shipped or $1400 local pickup-Washington DC area.
Or
F/f/hs/fenders: $800 shipped or $750 local pickup. PayPal please.

Background:
In this fun pastime of catch and release, it is time to release this bike. I
bought the f/f/hs used on eBay and built it up as a 650b conversion before
changing to 700c. It rides wonderfully and is beautiful! However, since
acquiring my Romulus and Cheviot, I am mostly riding them. Time to release
this bike to an owner with time to ride it! Though it pains me a bit as I will
miss the gorgeous paint, lugs and head badge! As previously stated, I
originally built this as a 650b, but the bike currently has 700c wheels and
Ruffy Tuffy tires. (Photos show bike as both 650b and 700c)

Frame is in great condition: two notable issues--one scuff in the clear coat on
the top tube and a bulge on the headtube under the headbadge with a
corresponding paint chip-I bought the bike with these flaws.

Pictures here: https://flickr.com/photos/86975051@N08/sets/72157646658697853
Happy to provide more pics if wanted.

Frame measurements: 56cm c-c seat tube, 57.5cm c-c top tube. I am happy to
provide other measurements and photos. (I have a 75-76 cm saddle height and
86cm PBH.)

Spectrum Tom Kellogg paint job is gorgeous!

Headset: Campagnolo record

Components included (also see photos with exceptions listed below):
-Tektro R539 brake on front, Paul brake on rear (a rear Tektro 539 is also
included with complete bike) (some photos show R559 brakes which are not
included)
-Paul rear brake hanger
-TRP brake levers
-Kmc chain
-Altus rear derailleur
-11-32 shimano cassette
-Shimano CX-70 front derailleur
-Shimano 8sp shift levers
-BB un55 107mm
-Crankset sugino wide low double;170 crank length
-Nitto Albastache bars (Nitto noodles 46cm also included)
-Nitto Dirt Drop stem (Nitto Technomic 280mm with 70mm reach is also included
with complete bike)
-Tires 700x28 Ruffy Tuffy
-700c wheelset 36hole Mavic A319 wheelset Shimano Tiagra hubs (130 rear spacing)
-VO grand cru seat post
-Brooks b17 saddle - blue
-Bar wrap - Cinelli - blue gel cork
-pedals -MKS RMX Sneaker Pedals
-Sykes custom wood fenders
-blue Rivendell mud flap on front fender, --blue small Saddlesack.
-2 king iris bottle cages

NOT included but pictured in some of the photos:
-Frame pump
-Kleen kanteen bottle
-SKS fenders
-rear blinky light, front light
-American flag
-bell

I am not interested in selling parts/accessories individually at this time.

Happy to answer questions. Please reply off list.

Thanks,
Erl

[RBW] Re: FS: Riv Road Stnd-56cm-complete bike

2018-01-10 Thread WETH
Tom,

Thanks for asking.

Yes, I still run the inverted albastache bars. They work well on this frame
which is too small for me. Sorry I haven't tried them the normal way, yet. I
still don't ride the bike as much as I feel I should. I should sell it to
someone who would use it more, but it is such a beautiful frame.

I am also considering trying the inverted albastache bars on my Cheviot in
place of albatross bars. I ride a great deal with my hands on the curves. I
installed Dia Compe levers that follow the bar's curve and give me quick access
to the brakes. https://flic.kr/p/MX1Vwv However there is much lateral play in
the levers which I don't like. So I am considering the albastaches with road
brake levers. Maybe when I do my spring tune up. I find fun in
experimentation!

All the best,
Erl

Re: [RBW] OT: New Bike Shed Day

2017-10-30 Thread WETH
Dear Patrick,
The answer to your question, where do I work on my bikes, is on our screen
porch in spring, summer, & fall, and in the living room in winter. Longer
projects like hanging components on an empty frame or refurbishing an old bike
often occur in my basement workroom. The narrow/steep stairs to the basement
discourage me from taking a bike up/down more than absolutely necessary. Most
of my tools live in a flambeau tool box (like this:
https://www.flambeaucases.com/six-tray-box-35-compartments.aspx) that travels
with my Park work stand. My wife is quite indulgent of my work stand and tool
box. I wish I had a dedicated workshop/garage, but not enough to move. So I
improvise, and it all works well even if it is a bit unconventional.
All the best,
Erl

[RBW] Re: OT: New Bike Shed Day

2017-10-30 Thread WETH
Thanks all!
Jeremy and Geoff,
I have no construction plans, we improvised off of the two photos. I am happy
to take more detailed photos this weekend. When I do, I will add them to the
Flickr folder linked above. Also happy to answer questions via email.
Thanks again,
Erl

[RBW] OT: New Bike Shed Day

2017-10-30 Thread WETH
Riv content is the Riv contents: Rosco Bubbe, Romulus, and Road Standard.

Short version: photos of my two new bike sheds recreated from two photos found
online: https://flickr.com/photos/86975051@N08/sets/72157687667377971

Longer version: I have been searching for a bike storage solution for a few
years to house my burgeoning bike collection. Lot restrictions including
topography and house placement precluded a full size shed or detached garage as
practical or aesthetically desirable solutions. Storage inside the house was
not optimal or convenient. After searching online I came across this
intriguing design: https://flic.kr/p/YNFCKL. It looked compact and most
importantly it looked like it would fit my parameters: wouldn't obstruct the
kitchen windows, would fit near the backdoor and driveway between AC unit and
screen porch, and would be easy to secure & use. After a fruitless search for
plans for the shed I'd seen or an owner of the photograph, I showed the photo
to a few handymen and found one willing to replicate it. Since my wife and
sons each have a bike, I thought two sheds would be better than one! N+1!

I still need to paint the exteriors, install a lock on the doors, and install
some shelving and hooks inside for helmets and other gear. (The bikes are
locked to each other in the meantime.) I also need to find stronger gas struts
to hold the door up/open. Overall I'm thrilled! I can now keep all my bikes
out of the weather, secured, and hidden all while keeping them easy to take out
and to secure when done!!
Same Photos here: https://flickr.com/photos/86975051@N08/sets/72157687667377971

Thanks for indulging my excitement,
Erl

Congratulations! Well done!
PS: I don't know you personally like your coworker, but I would have bet more

[RBW] Found Stolen Riv in LA - Help me find the owner!

2017-10-29 Thread WETH
All good ideas. Perhaps Rivendell would feature this on the Blug too to help
get the word out. Good luck!

[RBW] What do Rivendell riders use for winter weather head gear?

2017-10-28 Thread WETH
I wear an Ibex balaclava:
https://www.ibex.com/the-balaclava?quantity=1=8990=One+Size
If you shop around or shop their sales you can buy it for about $25
I've worn mine for 3-4 years of winter commuting. Keeps me warm down into the
single degree Fahrenheit temperature readings. It fits nicely under my helmet
and folds up small, so I always have it as temperatures fluctuate greatly
during a Washington DC winter.

[RBW] Re: What is a Rivvish bike?

2017-10-27 Thread WETH
I biked with a friend last weekend who doesn't own a Rivendell or a Rivvish
bike. I had him ride my Romulus with albatross bars for a few minutes. When
he got off of the bike his first comment said with a smile, "I felt like I was
a kid again riding my bike!"

[RBW] Need help with Romulus Decals

2017-10-15 Thread WETH
I got the impression when I spoke to them that decals weren't an issue. Here
is a photo of what they sent me: https://flic.kr/p/CrSpow
I have never bothered to compare them with the original until your post got me
thinking. In comparing my decals to "original" ones in photos on the Internet,
my downtube sticker looks the same, but the seattube R is a bit different.
Just an FYI.
Rivendell did tell me too not to lose the headbadge as they had no more!
Good luck.

2017-10-15 Thread WETH
Hi,
When I had my Romulus powder coated locally 2 years ago , I bought replacement
decals from Rivendell. You should contact them as they were quite helpful.

Erl
