[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne sizing advice

2024-05-20 Thread Grady Wright
Please report back when you get your new sam or the chance to ride the
different sizes. I am wanting to get a sam for a dedicated drop bar rando
bike. I am 6'1" PBH 90 and my 60cm Appaloosa fits just how I like with a
wavy style handlebar. I'm thinking about buying a 60cm SH from my local
shop but a little concerned about it being big for me using drops. Would
love to hear about your experience.

Really appreciate bigger sensors being available in pocketable packages. I
don't ride in jerseys any more, so I haven't settled on the best way to
carry even a really compact camera like an RX100 or GR. Even when just
riding with my phone, with it in the pocket of a normal pair of shorts,
it's not a great to wrestle it out while pedaling. Have ridding a couple
times with the RX100 in a stem pouch and that's probably the best carry
option I've used so far. Ir maybe that sort of bag worn on a belt, or...a
fanny pack.

For carrying phone/cameras, I've been using one of the Routewerks handlebar
bags for several years.

That looks really really practical. I need to do a deep dive into getting a
new handlebar bag. Would like a bigger one and one with a quick release so
it's less fiddly to not leave my bag behind when stopping somewhere while
riding around town. Using mustache handlebars complicates things a little,
but deciding to go with pink accents even more so.

Think for larger cameras with interchangeable lenses, even if a relatively
small one with a not-big lens, is gonna be best carried in a bigger
handelbar bag. Using a shoulder strap with a stabilizer strap works well
too, but I just don't want the weight on me, even if it's not all that
much.

So far, for the RX100, a stem pouch has been pretty good, and I've stuck a
folded innertube at the bottom of the bag to raise the floor and make it
easier to get the camera out while pedaling. But this definitely won't take
an MILC, unless it's an especially small body and especially flat pancake
lens.

Another camera that I wish I had to try out for carrying while riding is a
Panasonic LX100. Pretty compact all-in-one with a 24-75mm (equiv) zoom and
m43 sensor.

[RBW] Re: Will the 50cm Susie be too small?

2024-05-20 Thread iamkeith
I'd second the opinion that you want the medium. As another with a
proportionally long torso, Rivendell (or even most other bikes) rarely
have a long enough top tube for me. The beauty of the susie is that you
can get a longer bike and still have standover clearance. You might find
the stack height a bit tall, but you can play with stems to de-emphasize
that. It'll probably be the best-fitting bike you've ever owned.

Maybe bring a big pillowcase or plastic bags as backup (you could put the
whole bag in a pillowcase) in case they give you trouble about the outside
latches. Worst case scenario, they might have you check the bags.

Go for it.

Thanks Curtis for the link. This completely mirrors my experience. I had an
MRI on my left knee in 2009, and was a candidate for a knee replacement in
the near future. I took up cycling in 2010 after a twenty year hiatus and
have ridden over 40,000 miles since then. Other than some daily aches and
pains, my knees are in good shape and no talk of any knee replacement.. My
weight, cholesterol, heart rate and blood pressure are better than at any
time in my life. I will be 62 in November. I do believe healthy eating is
an important part of the overall health equation, and I do walk about 1200
miles/year. Movement is medicine!

[RBW] Re: SOLD: Heron Road frame & fork, 60 cm; $600 + shipping

2024-05-19 Thread Tom Goodmann

On Friday, May 17, 2024 at 12:20:36 PM UTC-4 Tom Goodmann wrote:

One last effort to sell this never-built 60 cm Heron Road frame and fork
only. As all will know, these bikes were designed by Grant at Rivendell as
a collaboration with Rona Components, then owned by Ted Durant. and produced at
Waterford. This beautiful blue-green road frame bears serial number B00055,
and was built in February 2000 with Reynolds 531 tubing. (For further
information, all of the original Heron web pages are still accessible:
http://www.heronbicycles.com/geometry.html).
Designed for then-available short reach brakes, and 28mm tires with fenders
(RH Chinook Pass); 30mm tires will also fit, depending on actual dimensions
and rims. For wider tires, some riders have happily converted these to 650b
using long reach brakes that were not available when the frame was made;
Tektro 559s, as usual, or similar.
The frame bears only the slightest mark on the inside of one rear
dropout, probably a sign of having been fitted with a wheel at some point;
it is otherwise pristine with all decals and the Heron head badge in

Wow, I had no idea there were trails connecting Mt Wilson and Glendora. That

Re: [RBW] Gearing question -

2024-05-19 Thread Patrick Moore
If your current cogset is a freewheel it probably has no more than 7 cogs
which limits the number of different gears.

How many gears you need depends on your own preferences: how high a high --
you've said you want a higher one and yes, 70" is pretty low; how low a low
-- with the 24/34 I assume you want to keep a similar low gear of <20"; and
how close you want the gaps between gears.

The possibilities also depend on how often you shift between chainrings and
how much you like quick, smooth shifts.

The easiest option would be to swap the 38 for a 46 which would give a
still pretty low 85" gear, assuming a more or less 26" tall wheel. The gap
between this and the 24 is pretty big but it has been done, and it would be
more doable if you don't use the 24 very much.

The next option is a triple with 46/36/24 which is pretty typical 7 speed
triple chainring, tho' still on the low side with 26" wheels. Or -- my
preference were I to use a triple with 5, 6, or 7 sp fw -- would be
something like a 46/42/24 halfstep plus granny for closer ratios with
higher top and same low.

But my overall preference would be to go whole hog and swap the hub for a
modern cassette hub with 10 or 11 gears; yes, you'd probably have to spread
the rear but it's not hard to spread a 126 mm OL rear to 130; in fact, I've
often used 130 hubs in 126 steel frames, tho' it's a pain. With 3 or 4 more
cogs you can (1) mix and match much more easily, (2) get a much higher top
gear with the same 38 t ring, (3) get a similar or even lower low, and (4)
get closer intermediate gears, *and* (5) do this without adding another
chainring.

I personally like "1X + granny" using 10 sp cassettes (might one day try
11) with something like a (note: this is for 700C wheels with fat tires, so
about 29" tall, 3" taller than 559 wheels) 44/28 and a 14-28 10 sp (easy to
customize cogs with a freehub) giving a high of ~90" and a low about 29",
but with very close intermediate gears. Abandon 1-cog differences in the
cruising gears and you can get just about any reasonable high and
reasonable low with this sort of setup.

Patrick Moore, who has owned umpteen gadzillion 26" wheel road,
all-rounder, and mountain bikes each with customized gearing. (My 2 current
26-ers are road bikes -- 29" for off road -- one fixed or with 2-speed IGH
fixed hubs, 76" and either 68", 66", or 57" depending on hub) and the other
with 3 speed fixed: 72", 65", 54" or 3 speed fw: 75", 65", 56"; 24.5" 559
 X 28mm and 25.6" 559 X 42 mm wheels respectively, but I've used singles,
doubles, and triples on various 26" wheel bikes.)

[RBW] Re: Gearing question -

2024-05-19 Thread Garth
A 24/36/46 triple will shift beautifully, and the 105 double, as long as
it's not one of the oddball current types, should work just fine. I've used
my 105 FD-5500 from 1999 on rings with 26/44/48 and 24/36/50.

I'm not a fan of adding more cogs(and the hub required) in the rear if the
desired gearing variety can be done with a double or triple. I think 5-7sp
FW's and hubs are terrific and highly versatile,. I've even purchased more
NOS FW vintage hubs(Suntour XC Pro and Specialized) as I have a number of
NOS 13-32 FW's, plus 14-34's(14/16/18/21/24/28/34) and 13-28's are still
available as they have been for years. Try to find a 7sp cassette with
those cogs, you won't. Try to find one of those, plus a 12t cog for 8
speeds, you won't. Sure you can go the Aliexpress route and make your own
cassettes, which is fine if you already have the freehubs, but if don't
already have the hubs , why bother ? Keep it simple.

Re: [RBW] Re: TRP RRL vs Shimano Tiagra

2024-05-19 Thread Nick Payne
I have both Shimano and TRP RRL levers and prefer the TRP. For me the
Shimano levers are a bit small, and I also frequently ride with the end of
the hood in the middle of my palm, and prefer the more rounded shape of the
TRP to the pointy Shimano hoods.

I take a 9½ or 10 in EU glove sizes, which is between L and XL US size.

[RBW] Re: Adventures in (Re) building my Saluki

2024-05-19 Thread RichS
Michael, that's a good looking Saluki. Sorry for the travails you had to
work through to get it road ready but I bet most of us have been down that
path with our bikes or other things (cars?). Since I'm not far from you in
age I'm with you in spirit on minimizing acquisitions. I too look at items
like my dress shoes and think probably the last ones I'll ever need. Have
fun on the Saluki!

Jock: two thumbs up on your Saluki:-)

[RBW] Re: Gearing question -

2024-05-19 Thread Ian A
If you change the rear to a cassette hub, you will likely need to re-space
the drop outs. I'm guessing your current freewheel hub is 126mm.
Spacing.out to 130mm would be okay.

My opinion would be just to change the chainrings to give the higher gear.
The older 5 ans 6 speed wide range freewheels lend themselves well to
half-step gearing. If you have a triple crank maybe a 44/48 or 42/46 with a
granny gear of 28.

If you are just commuting and running around with bike (vs touring or
randomneuring), I would be inclined to just put on bigger chainrings.
Cheaper, easier, better! My 26" wheel commuter had a 14-28 6 speed
freewheel and I paired it with a 53/42 double and it was great like that.
I do enjoy mashing up hills on my commuter though. I consider it anaerobic
training. Because the bike sees so much winter use, I decided to make it a
single speed and like it even better now, but the above gearing worked well
for me.

[RBW] Gearing question -

2024-05-19 Thread Stephen Durfee
Another list member recently asked a question "Which Front Derailleur
option is best for a 38/24 front, 11-36 rear". At the time, I commented
that my AR has a 38/24 front, that I often spin out on level ground and can
only coast down hills, and that I have been planning to remove the chain
guard and swap in a 46T front ring, to turn my double into a triple. But
then I got to wondering, would I actually be better off making a switch in
the back...

My 26" rear wheel is built around a Bullseye hub, with a 14-34 freewheel.
The front wheel is brand new - a Rich-built dynamo with a Shimano hub.

My questionwould I be better off making a change in the front, going
with a triple and the current rear wheel? Or, should I upgrade to a new
rear wheel, with a hub cassette at 11-36? Here is my stab at basic math,
which may or may not provide useful information
My current "big gear" 38÷14 = 2.71
with the added triple, 46÷14 = 3.28
with a new cassette and existing chainrings 38 ÷ 11= 3.45

I understand, of course, a new rear wheel would be a more expensive
solution. My existing FD is a Shimano 105. I think it could handle the
triple, but I haven't yet put it to the test. Are there other factors to
consider?

Re: [RBW] Re: TRP RRL vs Shimano Tiagra

2024-05-18 Thread deepak atreya
Thanks Jeff and Lori for detailed response and photos . Bike looks very
cool . I think trp goes very week with those ritchey bars aesthetically .
If the noodles don’t work , I will give them a shot . Also , atleast on
swept back bar I do notice that I tend to move forward and backward often
on handle bars and don’t vary my grip width often unless it’s a bad
headwind . So roomier reach on handle bars might work , atleast that’s my
theory . Let see . Thanks again !

[RBW] Surly Rear Rack? Silver? Black?

2024-05-18 Thread Michael Baquerizo
I have been putting together a kid bike out of a Clem L and mistakenly
purchased a rear rack that's not compatible with my bike seat.

I have decided that this rack is the best option for my use case and am
trying to get a deal. I'm based in NYC and understand that shipping a rack
can be cost prohibitive/ make it just as expensive as buying new.

Not super concerned with condition, just nothing that's ever been repaired.
While silver is preferred, i can settle for black.

Anyone?

[RBW] Re: Adventures in (Re) building my Saluki

2024-05-18 Thread Michael Hechmer
Well Bill, you are probably right but I turn 80 this year and find
that every day I have less and less urge to buy anything (excluding red
meat & red wine). Most of my tool budget, such as it it, goes into wood
working tools. This rebuild included only one new item - a brake cable. I
did decide to buy a new front rack but haven't actually done it. Every
time I buy something I ask myself three questions - Is this the last time
I'll make this purchase, e.g. shoes, car, cassette...; where am I going to
store this item when it's not in use but still findable if I want it; how
am I going to get rid of it, when I have to?

Alas, both of my children, despite being quite well off, are minamailist.
Small houses, small cars... so not interested in my stuff.

BTW, About the same time I bought the Saluki frame, 20 years ago, from
someone on this list, I also bought a blue Specialized Sequoia frame, also
on this list, which my wife rode for many years until I bought her the last
Betty Foy, which she now rides. The Sequoia hung in the basement for a few
years, then got converted to 650B and given to my son-in -law. This year
he bought his "dream bike" and gave the Sequoia to our grandson. That's a
pretty good run even for a steel frame.

Michael

I'm not picking on you, but I strongly believe that anybody with the
mechanical confidence to build a bike from the frame up should own a proper
small tap-handle ($10), plus an M5x0.8mm tap ($5), an M6x1.0mm tap ($6),
and a M10x1.0mm tap ($8). That tiny tool kit would have saved you two
trips and would get re-used innumerable times. My recommendation to
anybody who puts wrenches on bicycles to go buy those items today. There
are exactly three good reasons not to do that...

[RBW] Re: TRP RRL vs Shimano Tiagra

2024-05-18 Thread Jeffrey Arita
@atreya: I rarely post to the RBW Owners Bunch since we no longer own any
Rivs, but the topic of RRL vs Shimano caught my eye.

I (Jeff) am only 5' 7" with small-medium hands. My wife (Lori) is about
the same - 5' 5" with small-ish hands (PBHs in the high 70's, low 80's).
Back in the mid-2010's we rode standard road-racing type drop bars. With
small-ish hands, we gravitated toward the TRP RRLs since they were a bit
more 'ergo' and made braking easier. We rode these levers on singles as
well as our tandem. Everything pretty much okay.

Flash-forward to 2020 or thereabouts and I bought a Black Mountain Cycles
Monster Cross. I decided to go with the latest-craze gravel-type drop bar
handlebars, eventually landing on the Ritchey Beacons
. The
Beacons definitely are funky looking and from an aesthetic view can be
described as ugly. They are simply drop bar handlebars where they've been
flared out *dramatically *[36 degrees!].

The Beacons (as well as other gravel bars on the market) have relatively
short reach and shallow drop. Upon placing any kind of road handlebar
brake lever on them, it provides (in our humble opinion) much improved
ergonomic use of the lever (any lever). Again, note, both of us have
small-ish hands and the combined cockpit allows comfortable spots on every
part of the handlebar. The short reach + shallow drop + ease of braking is
there. Strange, but one of the most comfortable spots is deep in the drops
because it isn't too much of a reach - yet working the lever is easier (vs.
the traditional road bars).

In 2023 we decided to change out all of our road-type handlebars to the
Beacons. We used them on our bicycle tourers and for PBP. Interesting,
but simply modifying the *angle *where the brake lever sits, it definitely
helps out.

On Friday, May 17, 2024 at 7:58:26 PM UTC-5 atreya...@gmail.com wrote:

Folks,
I like aesthetics of Shimano better than RRL . So folks who have used both?
Is there a difference in performance and comfort , to make the upgrade
worth it. Also looks like ramps on RRL are longer, does it add to the
reach? . My priority is in the following order 1. Comfort 2. Braking
performance 3. Asthetics 4. Price.

I've used both of them extensively on brevets up to 600km. I no longer have
the TRPs, but I have the Shimanos on several bikes, so I guess I've made my
choice! I'm 5'6", 81cm PBH, and have mediumish skinny hands. I found the
TRPs to be a combination of too wide and too long, though only marginally
so. One thing to keep in mind with respect to reach is that the handlebar
reach makes a difference, too. The reach on Noodle Bars is on the long
side, especially compared to almost all current drop bars on the market.
So, the combination of Noodle Bars and TRPs makes for an especially long
reach to the brakes. To me that can be a feature, not a bug ... it allows
me to have the bar tops comfortably near and high and still have a nice
low, flat position in the drops.

Aesthetically I very much prefer the Shimanos. I don't think I noticed any
difference in brake feel, so I would guess the mechanical advantage is
similar.

Given that your first priority is comfort, you're probably going to have to
try them both. Given that price is your last priority, you'll have no
problem selling the ones you don't want on this list :-)

brakes, fenders and fork in order drive the now deformed nut out of the
head tube. Had another in my spare parts bin. OK. Now with everything
(almost) tightened down, I set out on a shakedown ride.

What a joy! I didn't buy any new parts for this rebuild but am still
leaning toward a new front rack. Contrary to GPs opinions I really
appreciate hi end Paul's breaks, TA rings, and Campy derailleurs and smooth
shifting.. I rode along grooving on the sweet, neutral handling of the
Saluki; the easy & comfy rolling of the PariMoto 45 mm tires. No break
squeak from my Pauls Neo Retros. Then, about 6 miles from home all hell
 broke loose!

Actually what broke was one tiny bolt holding the rear deraileur cage
together. That left me without a pulley or functioning rear derailer.
Fortunately I was uphill from home so could coast half the way home, where
I discovered the remaining half of the deraileur (Campy Centaur) was wedged
between cogs in the cassette. It turned out I had another Campy Centaur
 deraileur to use. Yea.

To deliver the coup, either in the process of wedging itself or my
effort to free the derairller managed to damage the threads in the dropout
and neither derailleur would rethread into the frame.. Another trip to a
 bike shop.

It turned out that the replacement derailleur also had a broken part,
which is probably why it was in a box of random parts. After some some
despair, (and a drink) I found a way to combine the two broken derailleurs
 into one functioning part!

Tomorrow will try another ride. It looks good.

[RBW] Re: Adventures in (Re) building my Saluki

2024-05-18 Thread iamkeith
Glad the bike is back working for you, Michael
You and your stories are one of the main reasons I sought out a Saluki.
Glad you're being patient and taking the time to do it right, too. I've
gotten impatient and forced things, only to regret it later. There was
nothing particularly odd or difficult about a Saluki, but it took me
forever to build too. Mostly because it's a bike that deserves to as
perfect as possible, so every part reqired lots of consideration or
searching. Hope you enjoy many more miles together.

Re: [RBW] TPU inner tubes - Anyone using them?

2024-05-18 Thread Harry Travis
Patrick, I don't expect to see tomato skins advertised as a cut-resistant layer and shield in bike tires because we know that short of getting out the serrated knife, the way to get into a tomato with a not-sharp edge is to puncture it easily with the knife tip ...or a goat head.Anyway, it is entirely possible that TPU of sufficient thickness is more thorn resistant than butyl rubber or latex. Just as we would expect of woven metal fabric. I had what I think is more than a normal amount flats with the extra light butyl tubes, but I wouldn’t say that’s a certainty because wet roads and old tires are the primary risk factors and I can’t say I’ve controlled for that.I would rank order the tubes as you’d expect for “ride feel” -RH TPUSchwalbe extra lightFossSchwalbe standardI don’t think there’s much difference in feel between Foss and Schwalbe standard tubes, and the difference between RH TPU and Schwalbe extra light is pretty small. All just one man’s opinion.Ted DurantMilwaukee WI USA

Re: [RBW] TRP RRL vs Shimano Tiagra

2024-05-17 Thread John Bokman
I have both levers on different bikes. I guess I have smaller hands (though
I wear a medium or large sized glove). At any rate, I prefer the simple
Shimano. The TRP RRL are too wide for my mitts. Sure enough, I can use them
(and have been, for 9 or 10 years now), but I find them wider and bulkier
than I prefer. Also, the button that releases cable tension has jammed and
no amount of fidgeting has released them. Doesn't affect the braking, only
the ability to use one neat feature of the brake levers. As Steve mentions,
one advantage of the RRL is that the breaking power from the hoods is quite
good. In sum: both are fine. I think the Shimano are better than fine in
my hands, and less expensive to boot.

Re: [RBW] TRP RRL vs Shimano Tiagra

2024-05-17 Thread Steve
I've always found the Shimano levers to be just fine, but for my hands
(glove size lg to xl) the TRPs with their wider hoods are so much better. I
also find the curved levers provide more effective braking from the hoods.

Re: [RBW] TRP RRL vs Shimano Tiagra

2024-05-17 Thread Mathias Steiner

I have the same size hands as my 5'2 wife.. so your mileage may vary.
The Shimano aero levers have been called other names over the last couple
decades, but there seems to be one mold. So Tiagra will serve as a name. I
find them supremely comfortable, becuase they fit my hands.
My other favorite -- not quite as good, but non-aero and fits a Mirrycle
bar -- is 1980s Campy, e.g. Triomphe. Much smaller than modern brifters, or
the aero Tektro levers.

It's going to come down to what works for you.

The reach issue is simply a function of size; if you're close to the limit,
an extra inch of reach due to oversize drop bar levers is not going to seem
like a good idea. But the cause is not the brifters, it's a too-large frame
and/or stem.

cheers -m

[RBW] TRP RRL vs Shimano Tiagra

2024-05-17 Thread atreya...@gmail.com
Folks,
Want to give drop bars one more time on my homer.

Long background and context , I had drop bars set up TRP RRL but never got
comfortable . But I think it had do more with the reach. I had around set
back and 7 cm stem . Also I have short torso and long legs. I am 5'8.5 but
have pbh of 86.5 . Out of curosity I tried Knee over pedal spindle with
plumb bob. On my homer I had to set it up with zero set back and push
saddle forward. ( interestingly same thing on my Atlantis translates to
around 20 mm set back , didn't realize .5 degree change in seat tube could
make such difference ). More importantly with this saddle position it
feels like my reach has significantly increased. I can comfortably reach 6
-7 cm beyond hooks of albatross set up on 100 mm Nitto faceplater. So I am
thinking of trying 52 cm noodles with 7cm stem.

Price.

I would really appreciate your experience and insights. Happy weekend !

[RBW] Adventures in (Re) building my Saluki

2024-05-17 Thread Michael Hechmer
You may remember my previous post after retrieving my Saluki ( Serial #007)
from the powder coating shop in White River Jct Vt. I thought the rebuild
would be simple and straight forward. What could go wrong?!!

First, I discovered that the threads in the BB shell needed to be
re-chased. This required 25 miles of driving (rt) to the Village Bicycle
Shop in Richmond, Vt. Home again things went well until I tried to.
remount the rear fender. Now realizing that all the eyelits also needed to
be re-chased . Another 25 miles of driving, only to discover that a
family emergency had lead to an unscheduled closing. Tried again the next
day.. Along the way I recognized that the stem would not tighten down. I
figured out that the wedge shaped nut was disconnected from the long stem
bolt, and jammed in the head tube.. This required removing the stem, HB,
brakes, fenders and fork in order drive the now deformed nut out of the

Fortunately I was uphill from home so could coast half the way home,
where I discovered the remaining half of the deraileur (Campy Centaur) was
wedged between cogs in the cassette. It turned out I had another Campy
Centaur deraileur to use. Yea.

To deliver the coup, either in the process of wedging itself or my effort
to free the derairller managed to damage the threads in the dropout and
neither derailleur would rethread into the frame.. Another trip to a bike
shop.

It turned out that the replacement derailleur also had a broken part, which
is probably why it was in a box of random parts. After some some despair,
(and a drink) I found a way to combine the two broken derailleurs into one
functioning part!

Tomorrow will try another ride. It looks good.

Good to have an opinion of Schwalbe 14A butyls versus at least 1 brand of
TPU tubes; perhaps I'm well enough off with the Schwalbe butyl extralights
which, besides, do very well amongst goatheads with OS regular forumla.

Hi Brian---

Yes - you get it - you get 26" wheels. I've been racing since I was 12
years of age and when I moved up to 700C a bit of the magic, the fun was
gone. When the XO-1 was released I jumped on it. Nimble, quick
acceleration, and to you point "bombproof"
Congrats on having secured a Toyo Atlantis 26" - wishing you many fun and
bombproof miles!

I was in DC the weekend after the Nat'l bike summit, which my wife
attended, and we rode the Capital Crescent to Rock Creek with a dedicated
stop at Happy Go. The owner (whose name I can't recall) was incredibly
friendly and we chatted about infrastructure and how obnoxious it is that
wealthy residents oppose traffic calming or more livable streets when it
would interrupt their god-given right to park in front of Starbucks. Hoping
the improvements move forward! Also what a great shop

[RBW] FS: Heron Road frame & fork, 60 cm; $600 + shipping

2024-05-17 Thread Tom Goodmann
One last effort to sell this never-built 60 cm Heron Road frame and fork
only. As all will know, these bikes were designed by Grant at Rivendell as
a collaboration with Rona Components, then owned by Ted Durant. and produced at
Waterford. This beautiful blue-green road frame bears serial number B00055,
and was built in February 2000 with Reynolds 531 tubing. (For further
information, all of the original Heron web pages are still accessible:
http://www.heronbicycles.com/geometry.html).
Designed for then-available short reach brakes, and 28mm tires with fenders
(RH Chinook Pass); 30mm tires will also fit, depending on actual dimensions
and rims. For wider tires, some riders have happily converted these to 650b
using long reach brakes that were not available when the frame was made;
Tektro 559s, as usual, or similar.
The frame bears only the slightest mark on the inside of one rear
dropout, probably a sign of having been fitted with a wheel at some point;
it is otherwise pristine with all decals and the Heron head badge in
perfect condition. I'm asking $600, plus shipping and insurance.
I'm selling because I am moving. (Meanwhile a local friend has sold
me a beautiful custom Riv road bike, made by Curt Goodrich for Douglas
Brooks. So, n-1; n+1 = 0, at least for now).

Photos here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/132838700@N02/ Questions are
welcome; thanks for reading.

Tom

P.S. Coming soon: XO-3 with S couplers, size 59.

I also have some Foss tubes that I have used in 584-42 and 584-48 Rene Herse
ultralight tires, and I have used Scwhalbe #13 (standard) and #14A (extra
light) tubes in those same tires. None of them make the tires feel like garden
hoses, IMO. I never had to patch a Foss tube, but I haven’t put huge miles on
them. I had what I think is more than a normal amount flats with the extra
light butyl tubes, but I wouldn’t say that’s a certainty because wet roads and
old tires are the primary risk factors and I can’t say I’ve controlled for that.

I would rank order the tubes as you’d expect for “ride feel” -
RH TPU
Schwalbe extra light
Foss
Schwalbe standard

I don’t think there’s much difference in feel between Foss and Schwalbe
standard tubes, and the difference between RH TPU and Schwalbe extra light is
pretty small.

All just one man’s opinion.

easily ride a 56cm, and wouldn’t hesitate to pick up another if I were to ever

Another possibility is finding a Riv All-Rounder – many of them were
spec'ed for 26" wheels, even in the larger frame sizes, and it should be
just dandy for leisurely rides. Barring that, maybe you can find the
Handsome XOXO – they take a larger tire than the OG XO-1.

While it is true that latex inner tubes are not made in 559-inch wheel
sizes, they are absolutely made in 559mm BSD wheel sizes. Maybe not quite
as skinny as the tires Patrick Moore runs, but Vittoria makes one that is
labeled 1.70" - 2.30". Michelin Air-Comp are out there with a box labeled
1.6 - 2.1".

Latex inner tubes are made in 559mm BSD wheel sizes.

[RBW] DC Riv Dealer Figures Visually in TV Piece

2024-05-17 Thread 'Steven Seelig' via RBW Owners Bunch
Here in suburban DC we have been battling to get a bike lane put in on our
main commuter route. The Mayor was all in until about a month ago, so now
the City Council is standing up to her. Basically, it would head from the
top of DC downtown as a protected lane and would be huge win.

I do local advocacy and the TV reporter (yes, a cyclist) reached out to me,
I said meet me at our LBS Riv dealer, Happy Go. I am off my bike for a
week or so, so my Platty did not make an appearance, but Happy Go did. And
that is my head talking in favor.
