If you're in Ballard, I'd just go to Free Range in Fremont. They're super
close to you, and were at one time a Rivendell dealer. They are also super
nice people there, and definitely won't mock you. No "bike shop dude"
mentality there - in fact it's a woman owned business.

I would build up the MIT one as an old school style MTB with Wavie or

[RBW] Re: Roadini fendering at 32mm?

2019-05-16 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
I am currently running a pair of R539 brakes on my '83 Trek, and at least
in the front, they are the limiting factor in fender/tire clearance. Dia
Compe 610's offer several millimeters of additional clearance over the
539's. I think if you want maximize clearance with that kind of brake
reach, you need to go to centerpulls (or have canti posts brazed on).

I have had a front fender accordion on me before, so I like conservative
clearance with fenders. Others may be more comfortable pushing the limits.

I wonder if they are actually any wider than a 48cm Noodle. They state 50cm
c-t-c at the ends. Noodles are 48cm c-t-c at the lever clamps - with the 4

If you mean the Nitto RM-013 Dirt Drops, the listed size is measured at the
ends, where the Noodle sizes reflect the width at the hoods. The RM-013
flares at the ends of the drops a little more. I think a 48cm Noodle is
actually 48cm at the hoods, where the 52 RM-013 is closer to 46cm at the
hoods.

If you look at the geometry charts, Grant does use slightly different
geometry for different wheel sizes (especially noticeable is differing HTA

regardless of wheel size. Obviously, acceleration might feel different with
smaller wheels, but I bet they handle pretty similar otherwise.

I don't have a Rambouillet, but I think your experience is about what to
expect from any bike designed for 57mm reach brakes. Under best case
scenario, you might fit 32mm tires and fenders, but clearance will be
tight. I think the intention is for 28mm max tire size with fenders, and
35mm (maybe 37 in some cases) without fenders.

[RBW] Re: Recommend 700 x 28c tire, please.

2018-09-29 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
I’ve never had more than 75psi in my Chinook Passes, but I only weigh 140
pounds. I have the extra light version, and am a little over 1000 miles in,
with no flats. I do find them noticeably nicer riding than the 28mm non-belted
Paselas they replaced, but not necessarily dramatically so. I chalk that up to
the unbelted Paselas still being a really nice riding tire for the money. My
only gripe with them is that the tread pattern picks up debris in the rain, and
it slowly works its way in, causing flats. In a decade or more of riding them,
almost every flat I had (not many) was in November and December (first 2 months
if Seattle’s rainy season). After December, it seems it’s rained enough to wash
most of the debris off the roads. If it was less rainy here, I’d probably still
ride them in 28’s. I do still ride 26x1.75 Paselas on my old mountain bike.

[RBW] Problem with Roadinis?

2018-09-22 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
Personally, I would consider the extra clearance a plus. That's commonly a spot
where fender clearance is reduced by brake interference. I understand not
wanting that if you don't plan on ever fendering the bike, or don't want to
maximize tire size, but I'd personally only consider it a problem if it had
REDUCED clearance.

Do people actually sell Paul's for under $100, even used? I'm asking, not
disagreeing. I've never seen them for that price, but I've also never

[RBW] New "Hill" Bike is Posted

2018-09-15 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
It doesn't really strike me as a "step through" - it's just a curvy/droopy
dropped top tube that gives more standover clearance. As said earlier, a bit
like a Jones spacecraft in that regard. Either way, I love it.

[RBW] Best brake fork crown clearance calipers?

2018-09-15 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
Centerpulls are going to be your best bet as far as minimizing brake
interference with fork crown clearance. I think you'd have to go used to find a
set under $100, although the new Dia Compe dc610's are worth it.

I currently run Tektro r539's on my '83 Trek 520, and they DO reduce my
available clearance. I have plenty of clearance for 28mms tires with fenders,
but it would be too tight for my taste with 32's.

These IRD brakes are in your budget and claim good fender and tire clearance,
and the shape of the arms looks promising, but I guess it also depends on how
far below the bolt they hang.

[RBW] Re: MTB on the Blahg (again)

2018-09-08 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
The Jones LWB shows a long wheelbase can be successfuly used on a mountain
bike. I bet it will at least be long in the rear center - I’m curious what the
front end geometry will be like. I would bet that Grant will want to balance
the stability and “in the bike” feeling of a longer rear with some nimbleness
in the front. It will be interesting to see how much of that comes from head
tube angle and how much from fork rake.

Regarding the name, all I came up with were dumb nonsense names that surely
aren’t correct. Someone else will have to figure it out!

Seconding this. I've used CR18's (and previously Sun M13's as well) for

Similar feelings here. I also had a set mounted on VO Porteur bars. I found
that if you grabbed the curved end portion hard in an emergency braking
situation, the levers could rotate on the bars, causing the lever to bottom
out against the bars. This led to a very scary near crash for me. I
couldn't seem to tighten the band clamp enough to make them feel safe and

I just saw the samples in person. I was killing time waiting for a flight back
to Seattle this evening, and took BART out to RBW, since I wanted to pickup
some new Dia Compe 610’s.

Will showed me the new Taiwan Homers, and they look great! A little more
upslope, and longer, but proportional to size chainstays. Will did say they
take 27.2 seatpost. These look like a hell of a bike for the money. I am
seriously thinking of getting serious about saving, selling stuff, whatever I
need to do to get one. I didn’t think I’d like the color, but was completely
won over in person. Don’t think there’s any corners cut by being made overseas
- these are beautiful bikes.

Will offered me a test ride, but it was very smoky today, and I have lung
issues, otherwise I expect I’d be telling you how great they ride. I’ve always
wanted an Atlantis, but I may have converted that desire to a Homer.

p.s. the new orange Roadini color looks great, as do the canti Sams.

2018-07-12 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
I don't have one, so can only speculate, but Sam Hillbornes are supposedly
somewhere in between the Homer and the Atlantis on the stoutness scale. Now
that they're offered with canti/V brake posts, they supposedly clear 48mm
tires too. They also build up great as touring, trail, or road bikes.

I feel you on the featherweight thing. I'm between 5' 11" and 6 feet, at
about 140 pounds or less. Most bikes my size these days are way sturdier
than I need, even loaded. I wonder what people take with them touring. I've
never brought more than 30 pounds, even in the mountains for 5 days. I
guess cans of beer add up pretty quick!

Both my bikes are standard diameter tubing. A 1983 Trek 520, with
.09/.06/.09 Reynolds 501 tubing, and a 1987 Trek Antelope with Tange
unbutted .09 tubing. They feel pretty right to me, and I like the look of
skinny tubes too.

It looks like Soma's "3-speed moustache" bars, which take mtb style

could use mtb levers, those particular Soma bars have always looked
terrible to me. Little did I know someone found a way to make them worse! :)

2018-06-20 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
No, I don’t have either bars at the moment. If I trimmed the grip area of a
Choco, the main difference between the two bars would be mtb levers, grips, and
thumb shifters, vs drop levers, bar end shifters, and bar tape.

I think the combination of top tube length and slack headtube would bring uncut
Choco bars too close too my knees, even with a pretty long stem.

[RBW] Cutting down grip area of Choco bar?

2018-06-20 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
I was thinking about trying out some different bars on my old 80’s Trek
Antelope. Ergon grips have made the original bars (riser bars with a few
degrees of swep) more comfortable for long rides, but I start wanting more hand
positions after a while.

I had been considering (and still am) Albastaches, but have also thought about
Chocos. The only problem with the Chocos is they will come back too far for me.
I have the short Tektro mtb levers, sunrace shifters, and ergon grips. It seems
I could fit all if that in much shorter section of bar, while still keeping the
nice looking curved forward grip section.
Anybody ever cut this section down a bit?

[RBW] Why not a suspension-corrected fork/frame?

2018-06-15 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
Well, for starters the headtube has to be shorter, and the fork crown ends up a
million miles from the rack mounting braze ons, limiting your front rack
mounting options (also making fender mounting difficult). The fork blades have
to be much longer (and probably stouter), making chances for an elegant looking
fork slim to none.

I think a bike is either designed for suspension or it isn’t. Trying to do both
is a bad idea.

There’s also the admittedly subjective matter of aesthetics (I think they are
as ugly as including disc and canti mounts - i.e. super ugly).

Re: [RBW] Re: MTB hints in yesterday's Blahg?

2018-06-12 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
Yeah, I'm with you too. It's almost certain to have rim brakes, and why
not? I don't get why so many people keep describing bikes that already
exist by other companies. I think it will almost certainly have longer
chainstays than the Hunqapillar as well. Will they be Clem length? Who
knows. I suppose it will likely use the new "wavie" bars (or bullmoose).

I'm personally excited to see what it is, even though I won't get one. My
'87 Trek Antelope is still enough mountain bike for me, and an Atlantis
would be even more so. The new long chainstay bikes are, like the Jones
Plus, probably too long a wheelbase for me to have because of train/bus/car
bike rack issues, but that doesn't mean I think they're a bad idea. I'd
love to ride one of each!

I don't think canti's look wrong on most any bike, but there's plenty of
reasons to use side of center pull brakes. Brazing on cantilever posts also
cost more. I think they strike pretty good balance on the brake styles.

[RBW] Re: Jobst on short chainstays

2018-05-29 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
1983 Trek 720's and 850's had 47 and 48.5 cm stays, respectively. I suspect
those were the maximum length you could get. Great riding bikes. I think most
people would objectively consider those long chainstays, and that's about in
the range of the current Waterford Atlantis. I doubt Jobst's stays were any
longer than that.

Now, if one has reasons to find stays well into the 50's too long for their
purposes, that doesn't necessarily make you a long chainstay denier who insists
on 42-43 cm stays. I bet the very looong Riv's do ride great, but I do hope all
the Taiwan bikes don't go to that extreme. That doesn't mean not making long
bikes, but hopefully still keeping a Taiwan made option that can tour, without
having chainstays well into the 50-60 cm range.

[RBW] Re: Made in Taiwan AHH?

2018-04-30 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
In the Waterford version, I think I'd want either a 59 or 61. I also like
large frames, but I've got a short torso compared to my inseam. For myself
I'd err on the side of getting a comfortable reach with drop bars, since
top tube slope looks like it would eliminate the need for too much quill
extension. If I was going for upright bars, I'd definitely consider the
next size up.

Eamon
Seattle

As a reference, I bought a Trek 520 in 1983, and it was 61 or 62 (they
called it 24"). It always felt a bit big when I reached for the hooks. That
one got stolen and I replaced it with another 83 520, but the next size
down (about 58cm ctt), which makes the reach better. If I had known better,
the big one probably would have felt just fine with a shorter stem, but I
was too ignorant to even ask about such a thing then. If I had a custom,
I'd like the seat tube of the bigger one, and the top tube of the smaller
one.

New Homer looks good. It looks like there is a little extra top tube
upslope, and a little more chainstay length without becoming one of the
long bikes. Not knocking the long bikes - I have no doubt they ride great
and I hope they sell a ton of 'em. They are just too long to work for ME
for practical reasons. I think the new Homer looks like a winner. Looks
like I'd probably be a 58 in the version (89 pbh).

[RBW] Re: ROADINI

2018-04-14 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
Tim, speaking for myself, I like downtube shifters for a variety of reasons. I
like the feel of skinny bars with no cables underneath (i use non aero levers
as well), and as you say, the cockpit is simplified. The cables also end up
shorter, and are running through little to no housing. I don't really care
about the minor weight savings, but that benefit is there as well. I like that
they encourage thinking about my shifting, and not constantly shifting to find
time my cadence (adjusting my cadence more). Some people might find that a con.
It does provide a nice reason to take your hands off the bars.

They are less convenient on trails or very rough surfaces, since you have to
have hand leave the bars. Another situation they are less ideal is coming down
a steep hill where you need to stop at the bottom. You have to think in advance
about how to both brake heavily and dump a bunch of years so you can get
started again. I usually try to downshift a bunch of years right before I
brake. Obviously, these conditions are somewhat easier with barends or
integrated levers.

The downsides don't bother me for occasional trail use, but in a bike that saw
a lot of it, I'd personally use barends. I bought a set of the Silver barend
shifters, just using the levers on my downtubes, but having the barend pods on
hand if I ever want to switch.housing

I'm not sure I would recommend downtime shifters to anyone who didn't grow up
with them, but like I said, getting the barend kit from Rivendell allows you to
try it both ways.

Who knew this thread would end up discussing foot long hot dogs and Leica's?

So, to sum up:
- The old Atlantis is still available at the old price
- The new Atlantis is probably a fantastic bike, a lot more affordable with
no drop in quality, maybe subjectively better in certain areas
- Some folks don't like the longer chainstays no matter what
- Some folks love the longer chainstays
- Some folks worry that the longer chainstays affect the transportability
of the bike (bus, train, car racks), but we don't know, because the actual
numbers aren't available
- The new Atlantis may appear to overlap the Appaloosa to some, but is more
drop bar friendly
- Some folks find it rude to comment negatively, some just feel it's a
discussion
- We're well beyond 200 comments!
- This much brouhaha is only possible because the Atlantis is a cool bike
that people like a lot
- Hot dogs!
- Leicas!

The 1983 850 is my favorite all time mountain bike. I bought a 520 in 1983 and

fantastic too. I bet it rides great with Rat Traps.

I wasn't able to afford a second bike until 1987, when I got my 830 Antelope. I

I don't know exactly (and it may vary somewhat with different styles), but the
bus racks in Seattle fit a current Atlantis, but not a 59 Clem. Rightly or
wrongly they are designed for bikes with traditionally "normal" wheelbases, and
by traditional standards, 47-48cm chainstays (which I like) are already on the
long end of the spectrum.

My raising the question is not a value judgement on super long stays, nor is it
questioning their effect on handling.

2018-03-22 Thread 'Eamon Nordquist' via RBW Owners Bunch
I don’t believe I insulted Grant’s work, and sure didn’t intend to. I didn’t
say anything about not fitting geometry charts or my ideals - I said it may no
longer fit a bike rack on the bus, or the hooks on the trains. It is just a
practical matter.
