Ah, right you are, Garth. I should've googled before posting. I assumed
they should be sunk in as is the case on my similar stem from Analog
Cycles. I stand corrected!

look off to anyone else? Shouldn't they be sunk into the...'holder bits'?

[RBW] Re: 173 v. 178 Crank Arms?

2023-04-13 Thread Brett Callahan
Is toe overlap an issue for you on this bike? Would it be if you added
fenders? Do you ever intend to add fenders?

I think the other arguments in this thread, both pro and con, are
articulate. Personally, I hate to overlap and would make my decision based
on whether this will make it a problem, or worsen a problem.

Re: [RBW] Re: Long reach brake options for AHH

2022-07-19 Thread Brett Callahan
PSA: Looks like those longer reach dia compe are in stock at Soma Fab.

 They're
not cheap.

My experience with 559 vs. Paul centerpulls on a caliper brake Hillborne
model was that the CP's stopped a little better than 559's in the dry, and
'felt' better, probably because less flex. However, braking in the dry from
both was satisfactory with Kool Stop pads. In the wet, (actively raining,
hard) neither brake stopped worth a damn.
Caveats: I'm a big guy at 250+ and really well set up cantis don't stop me
in the wet all that well either. For wet weather braking, a bike with
discs or to a lesser extent V-brakes are the way to go, I think.

Re: [RBW] Re: Grant Petersen Discussion on Reddit

2022-04-28 Thread Brett Callahan
Nobody asked, but here's my somtwo cents: VO metal fenders are much easier
to install **well** than the SKS plastic ones. They're predrilled, so you
only need basic tools like allen wrenches and a little bit of patience
(maybe a drill if you're going to directly mount to a rando rack, too).
Once they're installed, they stay in place much better than the SKS. The
stays are thick enough that if they get whacked, they're unlikely to
bend. With many metal fenders, you can gently reradius them for a better
fender line. Installing metal fenders stays from VO and similar brands
requires you to cut or dremel the fender stay, so four cuts. VO helpfully
includes both a bracket and daruma for mounting to a variety of frames.
Once they're on the bike, VO fenders tend to stay in place and seem to have
a nice fender line.

SKS fenders have fiddly stays, which I'm constantly finding get bent out of
shape. The fenders have an arc that can't be altered, so you'd better hope
it fits the tire (or not be concerned with frivolity like fender line, but
hey, I am). The stays, if they require cutting, have more metal to cut and
it's flimsy. Once cut, you've also got sharp ends facing your legs, which
SKS helpfully provides little rubber thingees to cover. These are a total
PITA to mount in my experience. Once on a bike, I find that they are easy
to knock out of alignment. There are positives: SKS fenders are pretty
minimal, so can be squeezed onto a bike well. They do have the nice QR
feature when something gets jammed between fender and tire. However, if
you're worried about a QR system, Portland Design Works sells a quick
release tab that I put on bikes with knobby tires and metal fenders for
safety.

The real challenge, IMHO, are the Sim Works and Honjo (maybe redundant, as
Honjo makes the SW models?) versions that are completely undrilled. You
get infinite options for mounting and infinite chance to err. I call these
six pack fenders, and they generally take a day to install. They generally
look fantastic.

Anyway, Rivendell and other manufacturers that include plenty of space and
provisions for fender mounting are the best, and we should all buy their
bikes!

[RBW] Re: Yet another round of name that sound

2021-07-21 Thread Brett Callahan
This is going to sound crazy, but is it the saddle, seatpost, or their
interface? That's happened to me more than once, and I've chased sounds
that I'm sure are bottom bracket, crank, or cassette related only to
discover that in certain gears or at certain effort levels, my saddle is
clicking. (In fact, this is happening with a Berthoud on my NFE at the
moment. It only clicks when I shift my weight and ride upright at low
cadence).

Just a thought...

[RBW] Faceplater failure--anyone else?

2021-07-18 Thread Brett Callahan
I recently bought a tosco to use with a faceplater stem because the losco I
was trying out didn't agree with me. I like the wider, more flared tosco a
lot. Anyway, In a test ride of the new setup, the bar was slipping. I
torqued the bolts down, probably too much, because I noticed in doing so
that the faceplate now seems to be bent. In removing the faceplate, one of
the bolts sheeted off and is stuck in the stem.

I can get the bolt out, but I'm not sure what to do with the bent
faceplate. Anyone else have this issue? Anyone know if Riv has
replacements?

For what it's worth, I bought the 31.8 bar and stem because I was worried
about slippage. I'm a big guy and that's lots of leverage, but honestly I
expected better from Nitto.

I replaced the faceplater with a slightly shorter 2 bolt removable
faceplate stem from Velo Orange, which has larger diameter bolts to attach
the faceplate, and didn't experience any slipping. However, the VO stem us
a little shorter than I'd like, and I really hate to think I'm just out a
nice looking stem because of the bent faceplate.

[RBW] Re: Something similar to Rustines Constructeur Grips?

2021-03-05 Thread Brett Callahan
I read earlier during the pandemic that Rustines has ramped up other
aspects of their business. They make medical supplies and that has been a
big driver of sales. The bike parts business, a tiny part of their overall
sales, has been sidelined. This was in comments here, or another list serv.
I can't vouch for the information, but it seems to make sense. It also
seems possible that if VO can't reliably get the parts, they'd remove them
from the website.

[RBW] Re: I decided to ditch LOSCO

2021-02-23 Thread Brett Callahan
James, your experience with the Losco was similar to my experience with the
Billie bars. I found the Billie's and an 11CM stem on my Atlantis to be too
flexy when carrying a load. I ended up going back to albatross bars on a
slightly shorter stem. A little flex was fine, but it was just too much,
especially on a heavy bike. I've been tempted to try out the Loscos or
Toscos on a lighter bike where I don't carry a front load.

Has anyone used the clipper triple that Riv is now selling? I believe it's

Re: [RBW] Re: Is there a Riv-like three speed currently in production?

2020-12-22 Thread Brett Callahan
Thanks everyone, there are some great ideas in this thread. The Brooklyn
bikes and Handsome cycles seem like a step up in quality (from afar,
anyway) from my old Linus, but are really reasonable. The Pashley certainly
seems, as noted, like the most Rivendell equivalent of the bunch, short of
a clever adaptation of an existing Riv like Jason's Clem and John G's
Quickbeam. Or I could take a machine gun to the budget and go full custom
like Patrick. Or, or, I could look vintage, which has the advantage of
really keeping me busy, and the disadvantage of older standards that I'm
not as comfortable working on. So many decisions!

Shawn, if I show up to a three speed event on a five speed, am I instantly
persona non grata? (I've been exploring the Sturmey catalogue).

John G, could you say a bit more about the non rotation chain tugs? I think
the only other 3 speeded quickbeam I've seen did not use those. Were they
designed to prevent twisting of the hub inside the dropout?

Again, thank you all!

Brett

[RBW] Is there a Riv-like three speed currently in production?

2020-12-21 Thread Brett Callahan
A few years back I briefly had a three-speed Public done up in Rivendellian
style, with a thumb shifter, albatross bars with shellacked tape, a nice
silver porteur rack, etc. It was, as a bike shaped object, fine. It was not
a Rivendell and I sold it a short time later to buy a Clem.

I find myself missing having a three speed in the stable. I've long
entertained thoughts of buying a Quickbeam, if one would ever come up for
sale in my tall guy size, and adding a three speed hub. The same might be
possible with the new Roaduno and I'll be keeping my eye on developments.

I wonder, though, if there's a nice purpose built three speed out there I
should be aware of but have missed. Any thoughts?

If anyone here has put together a three speed Riv, I'd love to see photos
or read insights?

Brett in PDX.

[RBW] Re: Racks/fenders, an aesthetics question

2020-12-15 Thread Brett Callahan
Joe, I can certainly appreciate spending too much time worrying about
aesthetics when you should be riding. Plus, this year in particular, I hope
we all "need to get out more." I think you have a great looking bike that
doesn't fall into a easily classified niche and the attendant (perceived)
aesthetic roles that come with that kind of classification. It doesn't call
out to me for fenders, and I don't think the rack is going to change that.
Like Robert says, getting the rack level is far more important!

IMHO, certain bikes DO need fenders (regardless of racks or other
accessories.) For example, a 650b rando bike looks absolutely naked without
metal fenders to my mind. Like...they should be tagged NSFW on Instagram.
But I also need to get out more.

Brett, in, in Portland.

Thanks! Stem length hasn't been an issue so far, with the pretty straight
bars. Some with with backsweep like an albatross bar would likely require
a different stem.

I present my handlebar swappable Atlantis. I was inspired by the Alps in
the last BQ. I'm not a fan of downtube shifters, so I went with quill
mount, which allow the bar swap not to mess with shifting. The Paul moon
units allow me to leave the straddle cable in place while swapping the
bars, and with a slotted Tektro hanger in front and a modified IRD hanger
in rear make it easy to simply slide the brake cables out. Removable
faceplate will stem allows me to swap bars by removing only two bolts. Not
having to revamp a cable repeatedly should avoid concerns about them
wearing prematurely or weakening.

"Ladies Night" or a senior discount are both given based on an immutable
characteristic, yet are common. As Bill notes "positive discrimination"
such as race or sex based scholarships are allowable. I'm not convinced
this illegal.

Grant and Co are certainly intelligent enough to have considered this
possibility and either determined it was allowable or decided the chances
of a legal challenge were low enough not to worry about. They don't need
all of us giving them pro bono legal advice! (Not that it isn't a fun thing

[RBW] Re: Path Less Pedaled will review a Riv!

2020-08-06 Thread Brett Callahan
I wish the albatross were a little wider. The trick for me has been using a
very long stem--far longer than what Russ has on his demo bike. I also run
them at saddle height, not high like many I've seen. In that configuration I
find them to be comfy and like the control. I just put a pair on my MIT
Atlantis and am going to try a slightly longer than usual gravel ride in them
this weekend. I usually commute about 9 miles one way in them. Thinking 30ish
miles of mixed terrain is a good test.

The billies didn't work for me, but perhaps I gave up on them too quickly. I
tried them on a 12 cm stem with a moderate front load on an overnighter and
found everything too flexy.

[RBW] Re: Path Less Pedaled will review a Riv!

2020-08-05 Thread Brett Callahan
I enjoyed the first ride video. Not surprised that Russ seems to be
enjoying the bike, as so much of his aesthetic and riding style seems to be
Grant inspired. I also got a kick out of the joking about disc brakes.

Interesting that the bike came equipped with Ultradynamico tires. I for one
really like the Rivendell/Crust/Poppi cross pollination that has been going
on lately.

Re: the comments in this thread about the perceived overuse of the term
supple, it's never bothered me. It seems to me that Russ uses the term with
tongue firmly in cheek, and I think it's a good way of describing the non
race type of comfortable riding he enjoys, as is his other catch phrase:
"party pace." It's as good a term as any, I think. He's also sort of
branded the term, making "Supple" patches and other gear. Maybe it divides
people into pro and con camps with no middle ground, like the Crust Bike
marketing copy seems to.

Anyway, good pub for Rivendell excites me. Hopefully this will generate
more interest in Rivendell among an audience that isn't as familiar with
the brand!

If Riv is going to push for more riders to ride V brakes with drops, dare I

The widely available Tektro, which I use, is unpleasant, ugly and cheap. I'd

Good luck with the new blog. Your review of the ultradynamicos seems similar

[RBW] Going from Sam (60cm to New Atlantis (59cm) - asking the unaskable: how will the New Atlantis feel?

2020-05-24 Thread Brett Callahan
JP, I have a Sam in 58 and the Atlantis in 59. The Atlantis feels noticeably
bigger in both good and bad ways. It's less zippy, more stable. Tire choice is
probably a factor here--700x 50 Cazaderos on the Atlantis and 700x38 Compass on
the Sam.

To me the Atlantis is more loaded touring, rough stuff focused. It certainly
handles a load well. Neither bike is sprightly. I've swapped a lot of parts
between the two, but have arrived at using the Atlantis in a flat bar V brakes
and knobbies setup that is fun to ride in all conditions but never fast. The
Sam is more road focused with drops.

Enjoy your new ride!

[RBW] Re: Drop bar on MIT Atlantis?

2020-02-27 Thread Brett Callahan
Hi John,

I have a 59 MIT Atlantis set up with the Crust towel rack bars (in the
smallest size, which are about 615 wide).

I've used a short stem (Nitto Dirt Drop in 8CM) and a zero setback seatpost
to minimize the length of the top tube and long effective reach of those
bars. It's a comfy set up for me. I'd think that by playing with stem
length, you should be able to run drops effectively.

Best,

If you've got something similar to a Mark's or a 32, such as one of the Rawland
Racks, I might be interested.

In keeping with the recent posts suggesting that "Want to Buy" posts include a
price, I've got a budget of $100 including shipping for a Mark's or 32. The
Rawlands retail for $70 ish new. I'd pay $55 shipped. I'm open to suggestions

Nitto Dirt Drop Stem MT 10. 25.4 x 80 mm (220 tall plus rise) $40. Very
good shape. Very little use.

*Grips: *

Oury Lock-on flat bar grips. $18. Good/newish shape. Scratch on one. See
photo.

Plastic Retro Grips $10. As used by Riv on the early Clem Smiths.

*Bags: *

Sackville Medium Blue Saddle Sack. $175. Good condition. Used for a few
months of commutes and a couple overnights. Top notch quality, but I've
discovered I prefer to use a traditionally shaped saddlebag. Mild rub
marks on the underside of bag from where a tire bumped it. Includes post
strap (not pictured). Does not include the tool bag Riv used to sell these
with. Several small pinholes where I had buttons on the right side of the
flap--see photos.

North St. Bags Scout Duffle for Wald Medium Basket. $50. Cordura outer but
not fully waterproof because of zipper. Nice little bag for a basket bike.
No strap.

*Brake Levers: *

Tektro "City" Canti Brake Levers. $18. Used but very serviceable.

Tektro V Brake Levers. $18. Very good shape.

Shimano BL-R780 Deore V Brake Levers. $20 Very good shape.

Shimano Super SLR Drop Bar Levers. 2 available. Both in fair-good shape.
$20/set

*Shifting: *

Shimano Altus 8 Speed read derailleur $15. Grant Peterson approved with
bigger pulleys.

Sunrace M90 friction shifter set. $25. As specced by Rivendell on early
Clems.

*Saddles:*

Brooks Professional. $65. I cannot break this thing in and switched to a
B17. Some signs of use, but in very good shape.

VO Woman's Sprung Saddle. $40. Lots of use. It looks kinda neat but not as
nice as a Brooks. It squeaks, but not as much as my sprung Brooks.

*Misc: *

4 New Koolstop thinline pads for smooth post brakes. $10 See photos. I
mistakenly bought these. 1 bag open. All news.

FSA Metropolis single ring crankset. $40. 175mm arms, 45 tooth. Black
bashguard on siver. Used and shows it, but in decent shape.

Soma 27.2 Silver Layback Seatpost. $15. New. May have been inserted but not
ridden.

Panaracer Pari Moto 650b x 38 mm. $40 for pair. Good shape. Sidewalls are a
little dirty from a Portland winter, but many, many miles left. (no photos
yet)

Thanks for looking!

I absolutely love Schwalbe Thunderburts if your bike will fit them. Soma's

I've been happy with Ride w/ GPS. Does the tracking you desire for a few bucks

[RBW] FS: Saddlesacks, Stems, Compass Tires, MKS Sneaker Pedals, mudflaps

2019-06-13 Thread Brett Callahan

Cross posted to iBOB Group.

Hi all, looking to clean out some seldom used stuff. All prices include
shipping. I'll be able to send out Monday-Weds of next week. PayPal F+F
or cash app, please. If you're local to Portland and want to pickup I'll
knock a few bucks off.

If you're interested but think my pricing is off, let me know. I've tried
to price fairly but I'm certainly open to offers.

Photos here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/9NAZDfRjRNMSzeUH6

1) Sackville Medium Blue Saddle Sack--$200
Good condition. Used for a few months of commutes and a couple overnights.
Top notch quality, but I've discovered I prefer to use a traditionally
shaped saddlebag. Mild rub marks on the underside of bag from where a tire
bumped it. Includes post strap (not pictured). Does not include the tool
bag Riv used to sell these with. Several small pinholes where I had
buttons on the right side of the flap--see photos.

2) Sackville small tan saddleback --$135
Excellent condition. Few smudges where it rested against seat post but
otherwise like new. The Rivelo patch is sewed on with fine thread and could
be removed.

3) Stems: ITM millennium stems--$25 each.

Nice lightweight threadless stems for roadish builds. Lengths
130/120/110. All 80 degree. All in great shape. Two longer stems include
original boxes. (See photos) $25 each.

4) MKS Sneaker Pedals --$30
Great shape. About 5 years old but came in a lightly used Riv demo model.
I replaced with grip kings, but I know a lot of folks love these.

5) Portland Design Works fender flaps--$20.

New in package. "Road" version. I was going to put these on a bike with
50mm fenders and 38 mm tires but they look a little narros. Would look
great on a bike with narrowish (sub 35 mm) tires.

6) Compass Snoqualmie Pass--$75 for the pair.

I do not have photos of these yet but can take some on request. These were
purchased in 2017 but used for only about 4 months before I replaced them,
so tons of life left. Gumwalls are a little dirty from Portland roads.
Worth noting that these looked a little thinner than labeled (700 x 44) on
my Velocity Dyad rims. I did not measure with calipers and they are no
longer mounted.

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: MIT Atlantis with drops?

2019-03-13 Thread Brett Callahan
I'm running my 59 with a Nitto / Fairweather bar that is effectively a 46
cm noodle with less drop. I love the bike but I've had a hard time dialing
in bars. This seems to be a keeper. I previously tried flat bars which
didn't agree with my wrists, the billie bar, which just had too
muuuch flex, and noodles and v-brake levers from Tektro that gave me
too much reach even with a short stem. Since making the change to cantis
and a more compact drop, I'm pretty happy with my setup. The bike felt
great with flats on dirt, and it feels great with drops on pavement. I'm
hoping to get it out on some dirt as currently built this weekend.

Bottom line, if you like the bike and you want to run drops, I vote go for
it. I think you'll find that the aesthetic funk will fade quickly!

Patrick, great anecdote and wonderful that you're supporting a local
business with such a wonderful story.

Assuming you have a Gmail account, why not write a quick Google review for
him? If people Google the business to get address or hours, your review and
a star rating will show up, which is great marketing. Businesses with only
one or two reviews can really benefit from a five star review, and Google
is more visible than things like Yelp.

As to the thumbs up, he may have been asking for a "like" on Facebook, but
I'm just guessing there.

One of the criticisms of Rivendell/Grant that I see frequently is that they're

Thanks for the notes, very helpful. Did you remove the valve cores from
another set of tubes, or are they available as a part on their own?

Thanks, I'll avoid the extralight tubes and go with something heartier. I

[RBW] Teach me about sealant in tubes?

2019-01-29 Thread Brett Callahan
Friends, I know it has been discussed here before, but I'm awful with the
Google Groups search function. Would anyone be willing to share about their
experience using Stan's or Orange Seal in tubes?

I've got a set of Compass tires that I'd like to ride, but it seems they
always have a slow leak from a small puncture. From what I gather, sealant
in the tubes may help combat that.

Specific questions are: which sealant do you use? Which tubes do you pair
it with? With a tube with a removable valve core, do I need to do anything
specific to get it in, or just up end the bottle? How much do you put in in
a go?

Thanks for any willing to share their knowledge. I appreciate the brain

[RBW] Re: new tires for my Homer

2018-11-20 Thread Brett Callahan
Alan, I've run the Cazaderos, albeit in a 700x50 blend, and absolutely love
them. Durable, but roll better than they have any right to considering the
knobs. Surprisingly little road noise, and they're great on dirt or gravel.

I've also been very happy with my WTB Horizons. They're not as supple as
the Compass offerings, but not having to change a flat every 15 feet, which
has been my experience with my Compass Snoqualmie Pass, makes up for the
extra bumps.

I have no experience with the Rock 'n Roads, but I have a friend who has
been running the same pair year round on his Surly Straggler in all
conditions. He loves them. They've been durable and handle all conditions
very well.

Good luck,

Brett

Re: [RBW] Re: Work Stand Suggestions

Picked it up last night without incident. It appears to be in great shape
for a used stand, and it fit, barely, in the back of a Ford Focus hatchback
with the seats down. Fortunately there were no hard stops on the way home,

[RBW] Work Stand Suggestions

2018-11-14 Thread Brett Callahan
Hi all,

I'm moving to a bigger place with a basement that will be a great bike
workshop area. Given the amount of time I spend tinkering, maintaining, and
building bikes for my wife and I, I think it's time to upgrade past the
cheap plastic work stand I have been using for the last three years. I
don't know the name or model of what I have, but it is a mostly plastic job
from Amazon.

Wants/Needs: I'm not concerned with weight, or ability to store, as it will
have a more or less permanent spot in the basement. I'm willing to pay a
little more for durability--between my bikes, my wife's bikes and a
revolving door of friend's bikes, I seem to do a lot of work on bikes
lately. One-hand clamp operation would be great. A built in tool holder is
unnecessary, but not a bad thing.

I'd love to hear your suggestions!

Brett, looking forward to a long winter of wrenching in PDX.

[RBW] Re: Experimental MIT Atlantis Build

2018-11-08 Thread Brett Callahan
Thanks for the response, James. The only mini-V's I've had luck with have
been Paul Moto-Lites, which I find to be wonderful. However, on my MIT
Atlantis, they won't clear the large rubber + fenders. Despite having set
up a number of canti brakes on a number of bikes, and having read reams of
digital paper on the how and why of the setup, I've never been able to get
them to stop as well as V's. So for now, I'm running short pull Gevenalle
shifters/brakes with travel agents and Shimano V's. It works just fine, but
I figure the travel agents will increase wear on the brake cable and
require more tinkering down the road.

Beautiful build, thanks for sharing it. I always enjoy your posts.

Cheers,
Brett

My sincere thanks to you all for your comments. I think I'll go ahead with
the purchase. In the short term, I'll put kool stop pads on the Tektros and
see how they feel. The consensus seems to be that the Paul's are a slight
step up in power, but are more work to set up (fine with me) and vastly
more expensive.

I appreciate all of your input.

Joe, that begs a question! How fat were you able to go under the Paul's?

I find the Paul's to have an industrial chic that is great, but the reason
I keep buying their brakes is that they work great. My experience with
Tektros has been more mixed, but they're a great value. I'll start with the
Tektros and give them a few months.

[RBW] Please tell me about your experience with caliper braked Hillbornes.

2018-07-31 Thread Brett Callahan
Friends,

I'm considering the purchase of a lightly used Sam Hillborne--the caliper
brake version. The only thing giving me pause is that it has been a while
since I had anything with caliper brakes. The long reach required would
seem to limit my options to the Paul Racer Centerpulls and the
Tektro/Silver R559 brakes. Anyone want to share their experiences with
these brakes, particularly on the Hillborne?

If money were no object, would replacing R559s with Pauls be a good idea?
(The bike would come with R559s on it, but I am who I am and will look to
tinker eventually...)

For background, intended use is as a primarily on road bike with a small
front rack, 38mm tires, and fenders. I'm six foot two, and weigh 235-245. I
live in Portland, so the bike will be ridden in the rain.

Thanks!

Brett

[RBW] Recommended Mixed Surface Tires for Not-Too-Technical Riding?

2018-07-29 Thread Brett Callahan
Soma Cazadero come in 700x50, so they're close but not quite as big as what
you're looking at. They'll fit your Clem just fine and handle great on loose
stuff and gravel. They're also solid on pavement. They corner well which some
nobbies don't, and the raised center means a pretty quiet ride.

[RBW] Re: Cushy Cotton Bar Tape

2018-07-25 Thread Brett Callahan
Agreed. The Serfas woven is fantastic to the touch.

For cotton tape, I've been cutting a used tube into quarters lengthwise (in
half if you use skinny tires) and wrapping that tightly under the cotton
tape. Gives some cush and increases the diameter a little, which my hands
like. It works under the Serfas stuff as well, but I ran short on tape by
about an inch wrapping drop bars.

[RBW] Re: Help me diagnose chain slip cause?

2018-07-25 Thread Brett Callahan
Well, I replaced the cassette and chain together last night. Problem
solved. Once the cassette was off the hub I compared it to the new one.
More worn than I had realized, but I'm still surprised it was causing
issues.

I've always read that a new cassette should get a new chain to prolong the
life of both components, so I added a new chain as well, again using a
second quick link to splice in a few extra links. No problem there.

The bike is back to spinning along without issue, and I'll reevaluate my
understanding of what constitutes "worn" when it comes to cassettes.

Thanks all.
