Yeah, the Clem to some qualifies as a "beater bike", albeit a still
relatively expensive one. The term is meant to convey something of a
lesser investment/value/importance that one feels more liberated to be
creative with. If you bought a new custom Riv, or a say a shiny new car
would you take the liberty to adorn it with hand painted designs of
your own ? Would you gut the interior and replace it with your own design
? While most do not, many do just that.

Still, every bike is unique no matter how it adorned. In fact there are no
duplicates of anything, "Mirror mirror on the wall who's the fairest of
them all ?" Hah ! It's a trick question in that it starts with the
assumption of two or more, when in actuality there is but The One.

When I had my '83 Stumpjumper (silver) one mid-80's winter I just felt
like hand painting some of the lugs orange as I had some Testor's paint
handy. It was irresistibly fun ! I think this is exactly what my
Bombadil needs too, some hand painting here and there. It's already a
custom single color. no decals. I bought it used and it was flat black,
which to me was worse in person than I imagined. So when it needed some
frame work I had Jack @Franklin custom frames use that black powder coat
as a sanded base to paint it with light green metallic Imron. I didn't
like the original decals either so I left them off. About the only stock
Riv color I've seen that I liked in the Clementine soda pop Orange. The
Susie orange is a mildly burnt/dull offering. I expected something
brighter . boo hoo hoo !

Spray-can painting is something we used to do as kids to bikes and
anything else that would take it. I wonder how many are willing to paint
over and/or accent their stock paint jobs ? I'm sure some have ! I like
the idea of a "blanco" primed and ready to paint as you like frame. Given
a blank canvas some may find it overwhelming at first but after that
first step into the seeming abyss and seeing that all is indeed well .
such is the Living as Life Itself.

Leah,
The Billie Bar is intriguing. I would love to be able to try out some bars

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

2021-05-17 Thread Doug Hansford
I am most interested in a handlebar discussion. I’ve mostly ridden drops on the
road and straight bars off-road but am looking for options for my Clem build.
Albatross seems to be the one I’m leaning toward but am open to hear what
others think. I had Boscos on my first Clem (didn’t keep it long) and agree
with you Leah they came back a touch too close to me.

Joel,
Tap that 401k!! Have you seen Joe B.'s custom? It has a nice sloping top
tube and I think maybe 650b? You SHOULD treat yourself to a retirement
gift. All those years of saving in your retirement accounts was good
discipline and now you should not feel guilty for investing in a nice bike.
Riding has so many benefits both mental and physical that I think it would
be money well spent. If Joe sees this maybe he can tell you about is custom
and the process he went through the come up with the design.

Re: [RBW] Re: 650b new Rivendell models (to me)

2020-06-28 Thread Doug Hansford
Joel,
Funny about Grant measuring your PBH. I've never been to Rivendell but have
talked to Grant about bikes by phone. He asked my PBH and I told him I
measured it at 83 and he said "you're probably an 85". I think he figures
most folks don't get all the way up to bone when they measure. I like
having at least an inch clearance even though I can ride a bike with less,
I'm always thinking about a quick dismount off of the saddle. My latest
bike, a GT steel commuter build has a 32.5 inch stand over measurement and
I have clearance.of more than an inch. So, I think Grant is actually right
about my PBH being closer to 85 than 83. I'd say buy the largest frame you
can comfortable straddle so that you can adjust reach with handlebar and
stem changes. A too small bike I think limits what you can do for your
cockpit options.

[RBW] Re: What shade of orange?

2020-06-26 Thread Doug Hansford
Kiley,
I must confess to being somewhat anti-orange. I grew up around Athens, GA
where all things UGa Bulldawgs is a way of life. And, as a child I was a
huge fan of the Dawgs. Our rivals were Florida, Clemson, and Auburn who all
wear some shade of orange. Maybe that has transferred to my bicycle
preferences as well. Having said that, I can appreciate a nice orange

Dang, the bolt is too short. I thought I was the only one who just when I

steel looks nice and strong. Hopefully you'll get it working just right
soon. I'm a fan of nice clean chromoly parts on a bicycle and silver

Re: [RBW] Problems with Nitto stems and bars?

2020-06-18 Thread Doug Hansford
Mark,
The same thoughts went through my head today as I drove my 2002 Toyota
4Runner that has more than 205,000 miles on it. It runs so well and is
solid and just well-made. But, it has a few rattles and quirks that I can
live with that don't affect the performance or safety. Leah's bike and
components are of course much newer and less complex than a 4Runner but
nothing is exempt from slight noises and rattles. The stem/handlebar
connection is important but if it is truly just a noise that doesn't seem
to be leading to failure then one has to decide if they can or cannot live
with it. When I start hearing a noise like that it's hard to unhear it or
ignore it though. Oh to be on my BMX bike again not caring about the
details.
Doug

Re: [RBW] Problems with Nitto stems and bars?

2020-06-17 Thread Doug Hansford
Wrenching bikes as needed can be frustrating but it's fun too. Lone Wolf
Leah you are tuned to every single noise a bike makes, just as I am. I
think there was a time I didn't focus so much on noises; but, as I started
installing and switching out parts I think I paid more attention to noises
and such. I had to really torque a single bolt stem when I used the Bosco
bars because they apply such force to the connection based on leverage I
guess. I hope you get it solved.

Re: [RBW] Next Level Clementine

2020-06-15 Thread Doug Hansford
Nice to meet you Kim! I'm sure Bridgestone was a cool place to work just as
Rivendell for sure must be. Bike-centric and people friendly. I've never
been to Rivendell headquarters but have spoken to Grant by phone a couple
of times and he's genuine and really wants his customers to get the right
bicycle and just ride. His book drew me to Rivendell in the first place and
I've been a fan since, even though I don't currently own a fully built
Rivendell bike. But, I've set my other bikes up according to the "Just
Ride" philosophy and enjoy riding more than ever before. Leah's Clementine
is a good example of making a bike uniquely your own even if it isn't a
custom.

2020-06-10 Thread Doug Hansford
I've spent more than I care to admit on bicycles and bicycle upgrades over
the years. But, that's part of the fun of it as a hobby and I would not
begrudge anyone spending on their bikes. We aren't all bike mechanics or
know how to install parts, etc. And, that's okay. LBShops can certainly use
the business. I've dabbled in installing parts and adjusting brakes and can
do a decent job. I'm even considering building up an Atlantis soon but have
my LBS as a backup and I suspect I'll need their help.

Steve,
I have tried the Shimano pedals with SPD on one side and flat on the other

[RBW] WTB: Clem H or L 52

2020-06-02 Thread Doug Hansford
I'll try again even though these are hard to find. I'm wanting a frame but
will take a complete bike. I plan to buy the upcoming Platypus but since
that won't be until years end I would like a frame to build up. If you have
a Clem H, or Clem L in 52 and are looking to sell, let me know. Would also
consider aCheviot, Atlantis or Rosco Bubbe. I'm really just itching to
build a bike up.

[RBW] Re: Sunglasses

2020-05-31 Thread Doug Hansford
I've never had a pair of Oakley glasses that weren't good. Oakley, to me,
is worth the extra money. I posted a similar question here in the past
couple months and my man Joe Bernard hooked me up with THREE pair of
Oakley. I gave two of them to my sons and kept the EV Zero. They have good
coverage, are light weight, and the lens works great in all levels of
light, except for darkness. I plan to get a pair of clear lens glasses
soon. I'm glad your eye is okay Leah, sounds really painful.

It's funny, I don't remember the hard plastic (red, like my mags) being
uncomfortable. But, I was 12 years old and my bum was just happy to be on
my bike! Accessories and upgrades for my bike definitely added to the cost.
I bought a set of red knobby tires with tan sidewalls at some point.

$1400 shipped? I’m waiting on a Clem but a fully lugged bike would be cool.

[RBW] Re: Clem Smith Jr. Index Shifters

2015-07-07 Thread Doug Hansford
Jim,

The wording is this...

   - SHIFTERS: SunRace thumbies. They click but aren’t indexed. Go figga...
but they’re re- ally good. Metal.

The clicking is probably an internal ratchet mechanism. On an indexed
shifting system, the click of the lever or button corresponds directly to a
shift up or down in gearing. That is not the case here. The ratchet just
reduces the tendency of the lever to move - the cable is under slight
tension from the spring in the derailleur.

Don't really see the phrase you are quoting (the strange grouping of
shifter to gears...) but I'm only going by the Clem page and pdf.

Jim, that does help and I appreciate the response. I am just confused as
to why Riv says it is a strange grouping of shifter to gears. It seems that
you'll hear the click in the shifter but that may not necessarily coincide
with a shift. Anyway, I'm an amateur in this area and am just confused.

 Hey there Doug -

Strictly speaking, there's no such thing as a bike with friction
shifting. By that, I mean that it's the shifters themselves which create
the indexing. So - as long as derailleur is compatible with the shifting
mechanism (some systems use 1:1 cable pull, others 2:1) and the shifter has
as many steps as the number of cogs (8 speed shifters for 8 cogs, 9 for 9,
10 for 10, 11 for 11, etc...) it will work.

If that's what you are comfortable with, then there's no reason not to
use them. But, if you have a chance to ride with a simpler, more direct
connection like the silver or other shifters, you may find it more
intuitive and simpler. I've found that the most indexed systems tend to
start shifting well and then slouch towards entropy. Kind of feel that you
end up tweaking and tending to rather than riding (especially if you tend
to ride in a variety of conditions and terrain). There are plenty of RBW
riders who have Shimano or Campagnolo shifters on their rigs.

 hope that helps!

The Riv website says it is weird but won't cause issues while riding. I'm
looking for your thoughts and whether anyone has any experience with this
 setup.
