Re: [RBW] Re: If you were going to go out and buy a fully modern contemporary bike, what would it be?
Bikes like the RLT and others mentioned here make a lot of sense IMHO. I'm doing RAGBRAI in July and on a internet forum I was reading, there was a thread that essentially amounted to people wringing their hands about the fact that a couple of stretches of gravel might occur on the route. I refrained from responding, but my thought was that if they are that worried about gravel, maybe they've got the wrong bike. These road bikes that offer clearance for bigger tires, and are equipped to take fenders (and racks?) don't give up much to a racing bike and are a lot more versatile. I think I'm going to ride my Surly Straggler on RAGBRAI this year and I've done two 100+ mile gravel grinders on it since May. I welcome a stretch or two of gravel! Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam water bottle braze-on disappearance act
I had that happen on an old Trek frame that I had. I took an AVK threaded insert and kludged the installation of it with a bolt and a stack of washers. Once installed, it held fine. It looked kind of ugly but you couldn't see it when the cage was installed anyway. Re: [RBW] Re: Just what is oversized tubing?
Yeah, that's a good point too. If you were to refer to an oversized steel-tubed frame as oversized when it's sitting next to a modern carbon fiber bike with 3 deep by 1 wided bladed tubes, it REALLY starts to sound silly. Re: [RBW] Re: Just what is oversized tubing?
Oversized tubing isn't oversized at all to anyone who hasn't been around bikes for 25-or-so years. To those newer to cycling oversized tubing and clipless pedals are equally bizarre terms. Both refer to what they've always seen as the norm. Anyway, my comment about referring to traditional size tuding as undersized was meant to be tongue-in-cheek. Re: [RBW] Re: Bike Fitting - A Mine Field
I've got a 64cm LHT that replaced a 68cm Atlantis. There is probably 1 or 2 more cm of seatpost showing on the Trucker but I feel more comfortable on it. With spacers on the steerer the vertical relationship beween the saddle and the bars is the same as on the Atlantis (bars slightly higher than saddle). I sized the Atlantis based on PBH, as RBW recommends, and the top tube always felt too long on the bike. Any in that category should be showing just effective TT length. If the Hunqapillar is not showing the true effective TT number, then either geometry was changed without notice (since it is subject to that), there is a misprint, or there is some other error. Matt, how do you know that the Hunqapillar's listed length is not the real effective TT? Did you measure one? I've never done that on a sloping frame. I guess that would be simple to do. Re: [RBW] Re: Bike Fitting - A Mine Field
A friend of mine recently purchased a Long Haul Trucker from his LBS in Wisconsin after coming up and test riding both my LHT and my Ogre to decide which one he wanted to get. When the shop took delivery of the bike, my friend called me asking for my advice as to what height he should have his steerer cut to, as the shop was ready to cut it for him as part of the assembly and set-up process. I told him to ask them not cut it at all, and to have them install adequate spacers for assembly. I explained that he could then play around with the height indefinitely and if and when he knew that he had his bars exactly where he wanted them, we could then cut it. He was buying a 64cm bike too, so it wasn't a ton of spacers. I also told him that my 64cm (that he did a test ride on) still has the full steerer and that the stem was right at the top. He relayed his request to the shop (while I was still on the phone) and he got a surprising amount of resistance! No you don't want to do that, etc. I kept insisting that that's exactly what he wanted them to do and it almost became an argument with my friend stuck in the middle. They finally agreed not to cut it and installed the spacers. I guess some shops just have the mentality that the steerer needs to be cut. Shaun Meehan On Wed, Jul 31, 2013 at 1:50 PM, David Craig neritic.mari...@gmail.comwrote: Wow, Jim, thanks for this information. I had never really thought about this since I always ride Surly's largest sizes. I checked out the Surly site and noted that for the LHT, all sizes of the 700c bikes have a 320 mm steer tube. I'm glad I didn't get a 64cm LHT thinking I would get additional bar height over a 62! And I'm equally glad I didn't advise anyone to go for larger sizes just to get the bars higher because your point about the problem of getting too large of a frame when buying a Surly using the Riv sizing guidelines seems right on. However, negative perceptions about stacks o spacers on uncut tubes do complicate putting someone on the best frame size as you suggest. It took me a year to sell my wife on a steer tube extension for her road bike because she didn't like the way it looked. Neck pain and hand numbness eventually helped to make the case. I did note that the 26 LHT's do have different sized steerers for different ranges. Size 54 and below have a 300mm steer tube and 56 and above have a 380mm steer tube. It seems clear also that a 62cm CC would have a lower max bar height than a 62cm LHT given that CC's have a 300mm steer tube and LHT's have a 320mm tube. So . . . someone looking to get those bars up there for a given frame size would be better served by getting the LHT. Dave On Wednesday, July 31, 2013 5:17:53 AM UTC-7, Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery wrote: All Cross-checks in all sizes come out of the box with 300 mm steerers. With a 62 cm frame, there is nothing to cut off because the head tube is long enough to allow a stem and maybe an inch or two of spacers. The old Surly warranty stipulated that stem plus spacers shouldn't exceed 100 mm, but last year they changed that, and now they say there is no limit on steerer length. But this is important: with threaded steerers, the size of the frame determines how high you can get the bars. If you want high bars, get a big frame. This is the Rivendell way. This advice is completely worthless with threadless steerers like Surly uses, because all sizes can have the same handlebar height if you don't cut the steerer. So a 52 cm frame can theoretically fit exactly the same as a 58 cm frame if the stem length is long enough to make up the difference. Buying a Surly using the Riv sizing guideline apples-to-apples is quite likely to result in a bike that's on the too-big side. I will tell you that uncut steerers with a lot of spacers tend to get a lot of negative commentary. Our Surly floor bikes usually sport this feature, and everyday somebody asks me to justify it or comments that they don't like the look. Yet of the bikes that sell, only a small fraction come back to have the steerer shortened. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Schwalbe Super Motos -- anyone?
As part of my job, I quote the cost of manufactured parts (injection molded thermoplastic parts/assemblies) to OEM's. I think Philip is correct in that the materials often times make-up a pretty small portion of the price of a manufactured part. When a company is purchasing elastomer resin, adhesive, Kevlar fabric, etc. in the quantities that Schwalbe and Dunlop do, they're getting a really good price on the materials. My guess is that if the manufacturing process and labor is similar between a motorcycle and a bicycle tire, the cost to the manufacturer for producing them probably isn't drastically different. I've been very satisfied with every Schwalbe tire I've tried and I've tried some cheapies that were crap. I can't think of a tire that's even come close to lasting as long as the Marathon Supremes that I have on my Long Haul Trucker. So yeah, $85 is relatively pricey for a tire; but if I were interested in the Super Motos, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a pair. [RBW] Brake Installation Experience
Hi all! It's been awhile since I've posted to the list. I recently decided to sell my Atlantis frame and fork, and I replaced it with a Long Haul Trucker. I had an experience when I was building up the LHT tonight that I wanted to share, because I know this list includes a lot of steadfast cantilever devotees. After I got the fenders, wheels, bar and stem installed; I went to install my Paul Touring Canti brakes. These are among the best and easiest-to-install cantilevers that I've ever used. Still there was considerable fiddling about getting them set up. I installed the levers and went to wire up the brakes when I realized I didn't have a font cable hanger for a 9/8 steerer tube. Ugh! Figured I'd have to pick one up sometime this week. It then occurred to me that I had a perfectly good set of linear pulls along with a set of long-pull, Dia-Compe aero levers stashed away somewhere. If I use those, I don't need a hanger at all. This is a Surly not a Rivendell so I shouldn't be subject to too much ridicule for using linear pulls. So I somewhat reluctantly removed the Pauls and dug out the linear pulls (Avid Magnesium Single Digits) and long-pull levers. I was in the process of installing the front V-brake when I realized I was done! I literally laughed aloud! It's been a long time since I've used linear pulls and I forgot how easy they are to set up. I installed the lever and cable and did a spin-and-grab test and the brake felt solid with good power on the first try with no messing around. Now I remember why I felt like it was weird going back to (what I considered to be) archaic cantilevers when I got into the Rivendell world. I didn't see a single picture of a Riv with linear pulls when I bought the Atlantis, so I figured, when in Rome Anyway I've got a set of silver Paul Touring Cantis that I'm going to list for sale once I take a few pictures. Complete with straddle cables, mounting hardware, and I think some spare o-rings. Although, I recommend that you don't buy them and that you get yourself a snappy set of linear pulls! I'll list the brakes in a separate post once I take some pictures. I've got some additional parts I'm going to sell too. Cheers! Re: [RBW] Brake Installation Experience
I'm also a fan of the threadless headset and stem set-up. I had the Atlantis repainted a couple of years ago and asked the painter (who is also a very proficient frame builder) to convert it to 1 threadless; but he wasn't able to find a long enough threadless steerer for the Atlantis (68cm). And I didn't want to spend the money to have one custom made. The reason I sold the Atlantis is because, from my perspective, it was a little too precious and refined for the type of riding I've been doing the last several years. I've been riding a lot of gravel, often in adverse conditions. And I found I didn't deal well with such a gorgeous frame getting beat up by that type of riding. That, and this year Surly introduced the LHT in a 64cm, along with the Ogre, which is available in a 24 frame size. The sale of the Atlantis frame and fork funded the purchase of the LHT frameset plus a good portion of a complete Ogre (custom build). I loved the Atlantis! It's a fantastic bike. I just couldn't deal with the beating it was taking. Especially after the repaint! And now I've got the Ogre for gravel riding and the LHT for commuting and pavement rides. Cheers! [RBW] FS: 68cm Atlantis Frame/Fork/HS
Hi all, Please excuse me for cross-posting. I've decided to sell my 68cm Atlantis frameset. I purchased it in 2007 and it's a Toyo built unit with the rounded lugs. It's been well used but I had it repainted by a local frame builder, Chris Kvale, two years ago. I've experienced multiple instances of chainsuck since the repaint during some muddy gravel rides, so there's some damage to the drive-side chainstay as a result, including a small dent. I repainted the area myself using touch-up paint that Chris provided but it needs to be touched up again. My intent was to have Chris touch it up before I sold it but he can't get to it until fall on account of his workload, so I'm selling it as is. Functionally it's 100%. It's a nice burnt orange color with sort of a khaki tan on the headtube, lug windows, etc. It's also got the fancy headbadge that Riv offers on it. Aside from the chainstay damage, it's in really nice shape. There are other nicks and scratches but they're pretty minor. There's also a pinch mark in the paint from the front derailleur clamp. It's got the stock Ultegra headset. Of course, tall folks know that Riv doesn't offer the 68cm Atlantis anymore. So this is a chance for someone to get their hands on one. I've posted some pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/shaun_meehan/ I'm asking $1,400. Feel free to make me an offer if you think that's unreasonable. Please contact me off-list with questions if you're interested. Thanks, Shaun Meehan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Riv Rally midwest and Grant's visit and other bike stuff to do in Minneapolis at that time
I plan to be there for the book event. I assume you'll have plenty of copies of Grant's book for sale Jim? I don't know about the ride yet. I'm going to try to make some portion of it at least... And my usual adventure buddies, of course. But honestly, I have no idea if it'll be 15 people or 150! Either way, getting all of us together to ride bikes is going to be a special thing. It's going to be a solid 4-5 days of Riv-ish bike fun. And you're invited! Here's some detail. Thursday, May 31. I believe the book-signing is scheduled for 6-7:30 PM. I'm going to provide grilled sausages/burgers and/or pulled pork and fancy beer and probably have potluck for the rest. I'm aiming to feed 50 mouths, but maybe 100, who knows! Come by the shop starting around 4-5 pm, and be hungry and ready to talk bikes and look at bikes and ride around on bikes. By pure coincidence, local bike company Salsa Cycles is sponsoring a film at nearby Riverview Theater the same evening. http://revealthepath.com/ I would have hated to miss this, but there is a 9pm showing for the film. We can do the book signing thing with Grant, then anybody who's interested can ride over to the theater (which is an old-timey neighborhood movie theater, not a modern shopping mall cineplex). If past experience is an indicator, attending bike films at the Riverview with several hundred Minneapolis bike nuts and bike industry types will be really, really fun. Seriously, this is going to be a spectacular evening for bike people. Friday, June 1: I'll be leaving in the morning to ride down to Red Wing to meet and greet out-of-towners who are joining the Midwest Riv Rally. You can ride down with me if you want to. The ride to Red Wing is about 65 miles. This meet-and-greet will be an informal sort of thing, but I imagine we'll ride around, eat, drink, be merry, and then scatter off to our respective accommodations. The natural focal point for meeting up in Red Wing will be Bay Point Park. Again, this part is highly unofficial and not at all choreographed. Go to the park, and look for people on nice bikes, and then hang out with them. I'm planning to roll in around 3-4 PM, but that really depends on who rides with me and how fast we go. Saturday, June 2: Meet at Bay Point Park around 8 am. We'll try to ride out around 9 am down the Wisconsin side of Lake Pepin. Expect 50-60 glorious low-traffic miles of mixed terrain, some hills, some gravel, some pavement, perhaps a modest water crossing (or three). There are cafes and pie shops along the route so we don't need to pack much food. Do not ask me how fast the ride will be, please. I simply don't know, and don't care. It's my opinion that the group should stick together. The fast guys and gals can wait for us slowpokes at the tops of hills and at intersections. Everybody should feel free to stop to snap photos, take a breather, slow down, walk up the hills, etc. I don't plan to provide maps or cue sheets for various reasons, but mostly so we don't get too focused on the route and so that the fast people don't turn it into a race. When we get to Wabasha, I'll have camping arranged, but there's at least one hotel there for those who don't care to camp. You're on your own for hotel reservations. At this time, I don't plan to have any support vehicle, so you'll have to carry your own gear or convince someone else to carry it for you. Maybe one of you has a spouse or friend or relative who'd like to be involved but who doesn't want to ride a bike? If so, maybe you could volunteer that person to provide a support vehicle? But my default is no support vehicle, just so we're all prepared. To be clear, my default is no support of any kind. Just a friendly ride, and if something bad happens, we'll figure out how best to handle it. Sunday, June 3: Much like the previous day, except in Minnesota. We'll roll out of Wabasha around 9 am and follow a mixed terrain route, mostly paved, but some gravel, some hills, somewhat more traffic. When we get back to Red Wing, the ride/rally will end. Depending on the time, weather, and mood, I will either look for accommodations for the night in Red Wing, or start riding back to Minneapolis. I'm

Re: [RBW] Re: New Drivetrain for my Atlantis
I guess I can see why one might not want to put the 2X10 SRAM drivetrain on a Riv for aesthetic reasons. But from a purely functional standpoint, I concur with Jim's assessment of this set-up. I recently bought a Surly Ogre from Jim (Hiawatha Cyclery) and went with the 2X10 set-up on Jim's recommendation after seeing it on his Goodrich at the shop. The gear range is great and it shifts perfectly. I love it! I have an 11-36 cassette, which makes for a near perfect gear range. You'll probably maybe have to use a non-SRAM front derailleur for tire/fender clearance reasons. Of course the SRAM stuff is all black, smoky gray, or maybe white, which is what makes it unorthodox for a Riv. But if you can get over the color issue, it's awesome. Re: [RBW] Re: AMOS update
I guess I don't really take Grant's comment that this is the kind of bike guys who buy $6,000 carbon frames should've gotten as an assertion that RBW is marketing the bike to that guy. I take it more as a commentary on the fact that many of the guys who buy those bikes would be much better off with a bike like the Amos. Re: [RBW] Re: Japanese Atlantis vs Wisconsin Waterford Atlantis
I wasn't aware that the remaining Toyo Atlantii were snapped up in the manner described when Grant first made it known that they would no longer be produced by Toyo. But I do recall some speculation that the end of the Toyo Atlantis may be the End of The Atlantis. So that might explain why the remaining ones quickly sold out. I agree with what others have said in that, despite subtle differences, neither is superior to the other. Re: [RBW] Re: Computers? No computers?
I didn't have a computer on my Atlantis up until last year when I started doing gravel races that require riders to follow the course using queue sheets that are based on specific distances. I never really had a desire to put a computer on the bike before that. I've had them on other bikes in the past and sort of fell into the routine of being a slave to them. But this time I've tried not to let myself go down that road. I just try to use it as a source of information and not to gauge my performance. In some ways I like knowing how far I've gone and how fast I covered the distance, etc. But I'm fine without one too, when I don't need it as a means to navigate. I guess you could say I can take them or leave them. Shaun Meehan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Blog post about tubing for AHH
I enjoyed the post. I've never really known what kind of tubing my Rivendells were/are made of (Atlantis and Quickbeam). I've had people ask me what kind of tubing is used on my Atlantis and I've had to answer I don't know. That's the same answer I give when someone asks me how much my bike weighs. In both cases, I've never really cared enough to try to make a determination. Shaun Meehan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: New Touring Wheelset question
I have a set of 40h Phil Wood/Velocity Dyad wheels that Jim (Hiawatha Cyclery) built for me last summer on my Atlantis. I've put hundreds of miles on them now; many of which have been on gravel and even a few light trails. These wheels seem completely bomb proof so far. And I'm around 230 pounds these days. They replaced a set of 36h Shimano XT/Sun RhynoLite wheels that I was having spoke breakage issues with. They certainly don't seem excessively heavy and I like the security of having the extra spokes. Plus wheels with lots of spokes look really cool in a rugged sort of way in my opinion. Re: [RBW] Re: Drops or Moustache bars for Atlantis
I've had my Atlantis set-up with both 'stache bars and Noodles. I definitely prefer the Noodles. I like mustache bars a lot too. For short rides in traffic and trail riding I think I might even prefer them to the Noodles. But the Noodles aren't even close to being bad for those things; and they're better for everything else. At least in my opinion. Lots of comfortable hand positions with the Noodles. I've got the 48cm version and the wide flats make it almost like having a flat bar. Re: [RBW] Re: Which Rivendell bike?
I don't disagree with the responses that you've received so far, recommending the Hunqapillar, Bombadil, and Hillborne. Any of those bikes would perform admirably in the conditions you describe and would make great choices. Of those, I'd probably lean towards the Hunq/Bomba for the increased tire clearance. Anyway, I just wanted to add that the tried-and-true Atlantis would work every bit as well under those conditions. It seems like it's sort of being overshadowed by the newer crop of bikes that Rivendell is offering. The Atlantis is still a great bike! [RBW] Correct Way to Measure Extension on Technomic Deluxe
I'm trying to determine the extension length on the Nitto Technomic Deluxe that I removed from my Atlantis. I was of the understanding that it's a 12cm extension but the lugged stem that I got to replace it looks slightly longer and it's a 12cm. Do you measure from the center of the quill to the center of the handlebar clamp along the extension? Or? Thanks! I'd like to verify that the TD is indeed a 12cm because I'd like to sell it and I don't want to sell someone a 11cm stem that I've advertised as a 12cm. Re: [RBW] Re: Correct Way to Measure Extension on Technomic Deluxe
On Mon, Dec 6, 2010 at 12:23 PM, William tapebu...@gmail.com wrote: Well then all you want to do is determine the right name of your TechDLX, so you can sell it correctly. Right? The bike I have in the cubicle now has an 11cm TechDLX and it measures a true 110mm, center to center, laying my metric ruler flat along the top line of the stem. My Nitto Pearl, which is also called an 11, measures more like 113mm by the same method. Perhaps your lugged Nitto runs long like the Pearl and is really 123mm or so? So I think what you are doing is deciding if you should sell your TechDLX as a 12 or an 11. My 11 really measures 11. There is no way I could convince myself that this TechDLX is either a 10 or a 12. It's definitely an 11. It sounds to me that your TechDLX is most likely a 12 and you are finding that the lugged 12 runs a touch longer than the TechDLX 12. Is that possible? Yes. Correct. I'm trying to determine the correct extension (as specified by Nitto/RBW) for my TechDLX. Thanks for your help William. I'll measure my TechDLX in the manner you described when I get home and see what I come up with. It is quite possible that they're both 12cm and the lugged stems run a little longer. But it's also possible that I've got an 11cm TechDLX and I'm erroneously remembering it as a 12cm. Re: [RBW] Re: Filed down Sugino XD2
I'm going along with those who are saying they'd bolt those cranks on and ride. Back in the early 90's I had a Cook Bros. crankset that wouldn't quite clear the big square chainstays on my Mountain Klein. I took them to work and and had a machinist there take almost 1/4 of material off the inside of each arm so they'd clear. Never had a problem with the cranks. Finally retired the frame (after having a crack in the seat tube repaired) when the dropouts were completely beat out by the axles. Once you bolt them on you'll probably never think about them again. Re: [RBW] Re: What's your winter project?
I'm having my Atlantis repainted this winter. The original paint is still in pretty good shape for the most part; other than minor scratches all over it and a fairly significant ding/dent/gouge in the top tube. But I've never been a huge fan of the stock 'lantis color (although it has grown on me some). I'm having the repaint done by Chris Kvale (a local frame builder) and while I'm at it, I'm going to have him add mid-fork and mid-seat-stay rack braze-ons. And in a distinctly non-Rivish move, I'm seriously thinking about having him replace the threaded steerer with a threadless one. I just like the threadless set-up a whole lot better and I found a TIG welded stem tby Chris Kelly that would work perfectly. In fact, I could have it painted to match. [RBW] Online Readers
Hi all, Does anyone know if Jim (or anyone else) has put the links to the online Rivendell Readers (pdf files) in one place for easy accessibility? I'm behind in my Reader reading and looking for the links. Thanks! Shaun Meehan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: 60cm Maxway Hillborne Photos
Looks great! You really take some fantastic bike pictures. I love that Hillborne orange. I've been riding a Surly Pacer quite a bit lately, and it's equipped with Shimano Tiagra brifters. It's the first brifter equipped bike that I've ridden in a long time. I know it's sort of sacrilege on this list, but I really like the brifters a lot. They're super ergonomic and they shift perfectly (at least for now). What kind of bar tape did you use on the Hillborne? Re: [RBW] Re: Bleriot Build is Coming Along
Wow! Sounds like it's going to be a fantastic bike. And I would say that it's pretty exciting that Bob has essentially told you that he's going to build you the most awesome bike he's ever built. Being in the Twin Cities area, I've seen a couple of his bikes in person and they looked really nice. The anticipation should be as much fun as actually getting the bike. Well... almost. Looking forward to more details and seeing some pictures in the future. Shaun Meehan On Thu, Jul 15, 2010 at 4:27 PM, S.Cutshall clotht...@gmail.com wrote: Will do, on the updates. Full on Rando bike. So far: 1 tubing, Sachs fork crown [possibly change that though, thinking about options there ~would go with one of Bob's custom crowns, but they are too wide for this build], fully lugged [of course], 130mm spacing in the rear, might step into foreign waters and go with a threadless steerer this time around [which of course allows for some neat and inventive legroom for Bob to work some magic up front] and 'yep' to front/rear racks + fenders. No super-fat/no super-narrow tires, just super medium. ;-) Most exciting for me [well, all of it is exciting!]... Bob has asked me, and it makes sense based on our relationship, to let him really fly this solo. We discussed basic details, wants/needs sorta stuff... and past that he said, You trust me, that I know... let me go alone on this. I know what you love, I know what you're aiming for, I know what you've got planned for your next 2-3 years on a bike, and I know what you've accomplished on a bike so far. He pretty much wrapped everything up with 'So, let me build you this bike solo: it'll ride like you cannot imagine, and visually with the little details I've got planned for things, the integration of things, the lug carvings, all of it... well, let's leave it at, it's going to be the most stunning bike I've ever built, period. I couldn't really argue or disagree -on any level- with that kind of plan. Really that's about it for now. Oh, and it's 700c and going to be SS coupled too. -Scott On Jul 15, 8:41 am, Shaun Meehan meehan.sh...@gmail.com wrote: That's awesome! I'd be excited too.
