Re: [RBW] Experience with North Street Bags backpack panniers?

2024-02-28 Thread Shawn Granton
Hey all-

I've used North St Bags for several years, both their more basic panniers
and also a convertible backpack/pannier of theirs, an older model I
believe. I used a set of regular North St panniers and the convertible with
its non-converting mate (I had them made custom) on several tours in the
earlier teens, including a four-month odyssey across the continent. North
St. bags are well made and Curtis stands behind them, repairing them if
needed.

I feel that their convertible bag was the best of the type: works great as
a pannier and good (though not great) as a backpack. I like how the pannier
hooks were hidden in "backpack" mode, no worries about them digging into
your back or having some "extra" thing you have to either add or remove to
make it work as a backpack. I say it works "good" as a backpack because the
pannier stiffener means the bag won't contour to your back, so it's good
for more limited use--I definitely felt the "stiff board" for prolonged
periods of use. Also, North St. uses the simple "hook and bungee" pannier
mounting system--simple and easy to repair, but not as secure as Ortlieb
locking style mounts.

I don't have my convertible bag anymore as my needs shifted. But I don't
regret having one.

Best,
Shawn in The Portland

I would not recommend riding east to west in the Columbia River Valley in

Everything online about this camera says it uses 116 film, not 120. They
are similar, but not the same. Has this person used 120 film in it? Maybe
it was modified at some point, or it's actually a different camera than
described? Unfortunately, I can't tell you these things, I can only say
that it's not the type of camera I was referring to. If you want that,
check this out:
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1312&_nkw=minolta+himatic+7s&_sacat=0

I can make a list of some other fixed-lens rangefinders worth checking out,
if you want.

And there are ways to spool 120 film onto 116:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/193259971118?chn=ps=493629870421=1=1=711-117182-37290-0=2=493629870421_193259971118=1262779892129=c=pla=9061079==11614425326=125167414711=pla-1262779892129=9300456=114697619=Cj0KCQjw16KFBhCgARIsALB0g8K5GdmgfAIcdT1p6GX8CVSgeiN3Md70V_GmZ43pcWBfjxqc4rPsh1YaAvqAEALw_wcB

If you do want to use the camera your friend wants to give you, note that
it won't have any focusing aid, so you'll need to guess distance. Some
folks are okay with that, others not. Also, it will not have a meter so
you'll need an external meter or use the Sunny 16 rule. Here's a recent
blogpost from someone detailing their use of a similar type of camera:

Re: [RBW] Re: Beginners SLR camera?

2021-05-21 Thread Shawn Granton
Hey all-

There have been some good suggestions on this thread. Let me throw in one
more and veer off from this (mostly) SLR discussion:

I'd recommend a nice fixed-lens rangefinder, most likely one from Japan
made in the 60s and 70s. You don't get the through-the-lens viewing of an
SLR nor the ability to change lenses. But the "lack of different lenses"
can be an advantage, as you learn by using what you got and can't go down
the "well, if I just had a 28mm lens" road. Rangefinder focusing is quick
and intuitive, and pretty accurate if the rangefinder has been adjusted
correctly.

These fixed-lens rangefinders can be broken down into two broad categories,
and yes I am generalizing:

   - Bigger ones that usually had a choice between full manual exposure and
some automatic exposure options. These tend to be from the 60s
   - Smaller ones from the 70s. Many of them were automatic exposure only,
though some did come with manual exposure override

The first camera I bought when I got back into film last year was a Minolta
Hi-Matic 7s. Introduced in 1966, it was of the bigger variety with choice
of automatic or manual exposure. The Rokkor PF 45mm f/1.8 lens gives me
great pictures. I got mine for under $50 plus shipping. A quick scan of
eBay shows that it's still possible to snag one at that price, though if
you want one that's guaranteed to work, it'd be better to get one from one
of the sources mentioned previously in this thread.

Best,
Shawn

That was called a Blackburn MTF-1. I had it on a couple bikes in the past.
It indeed was a great rack for putting a basket atop it, not that great for
panniers unless you like them up high.

Looks like Blackburn has discontinued them. REI still has it up on their

[RBW] FS: Various bike bits plus clothes and film stuff

2021-04-07 Thread Shawn Granton

Hello, friends! The endless purging of unused items continues. All prices
are USD, and do not include shipping. Shipping will start at $5 USD,
depending on what and how much you get. Local contacless pickup can be
arranged (around Mount Tabor in Portland, Oregon), but you have to pre-pay
first. Payment via PayPal. *Interested? Drop me a line
at urbanadventurelea...@gmail.com and
include your ZIP Code so I can sort out shipping costs or indicate you want
local pick-up.*

The basket is local pickup only.

*Please note that I have sold some items still depicted in the flickr set
below.*
*Firstly, bike bits.*

*FIVE DOLLAR ITEMS:*

   - *Green Guru “Clincher” (very) small frame bag.* 50 cubic inch/0.8
   litre capacity, velcro straps.
   - *AXA HR bottle dynamo, left mount. *Typical Euro bottle dynamo, 6V/3W
output, with two outputs, meaning you can wire both front and rear light
from the dynamo, rather than having to wire rear light to front light.
Nothing functionally wrong with this dynamo, but the spring that keeps the
bottle in the “off” position, away from the tire, has weakened. So the
bottle can switch to “on” if you hit a large-enough bump. No mounting
   hardware included.
   - *Cadet old school cyclometer. *It’s the “clicky” type that mounts to
front hub. No mounting hardware included.

*FIFTEEN DOLLAR ITEMS:*

   - *Wald “Clem” style basket. *This basket will hold a Rivendell
Sackville CLEMBASACK just fine. It’s the more modern Wald basket, with a
nice big and long clamp attachment to the bars and adjustable struts. Top
   opening of basket measures 14″ x 9″, tapers to 12″ x 7″ at the bottom. 7″
deep. *LOCAL PICKUP ONLY FOR THE BASKET.*

*TWENTY DOLLAR ITEMS:*

   - *Velo Orange “Mojave” water bottle cage. *Designed to fit 32oz Nalgene
bottles, 32 oz insulated Klean Kanteen bottles, and 40oz Klean Kanteen
stainless steel bottles. The mounting tab has positions for five bolts, so
you can use it with a standard “two bolt” braze-on area, or three bolt
mount too. Never mounted, still in bag.
   - *Black Star Bags Hip Pouch bag. *Aka “fanny pack”. Cordura outer with
   vinyl interior, water-resistant. 10″ wide x 6″ tall x 2.5″ deep. Comes with
   adjustable belt.

*Clothing, prices as marked:*

   - *Patagonia Organic Cotton short sleeve button up shirt, size L. *NIce
light gauzy cotton weave, great for summer. Well loved–two small holes on
   right side by pocket. *$10*
   - *Plaid wool bike cap. *Fits like a large. Made by Drew in Hood River.
   *$10*
   - *Smartwool merino sleeves, size L/XL. $10*
   - *Pendleton wool sweater vest, size XL. $15*
   - *Nau wool/poly hoodie, size XL. $25*
   - *Pendleton zip up wool “board” shirt jacket, size L. *Yeah, that
classic surfing Pendleton pattern as seen on Beach Boys record covers.
   *$30*

*Camera/Film Stuff:*

   - *49mm Promaster filters. *Have a Sepia tone filter and FL-D filter. *$5
   each or both for $8.*
   - *Arista EDU/Fomapan 400 black and white film. *(Arista is Fomapan.)
Five rolls total, two 24 exposure rolls and three 36. Cold stored.
Expiration dates range from 2022 to 2023. *$15 for all of them.*

I also noticed that VO stopped stocking Rustines, wonder what's up with
that.

I've used both the Rustines and the VO Kraton grips. The Kratons are ok,
but definitely not the same or similar to those Rustines grips. But they
are cheap!

I still have one bike with Rustines Constructeur grips. I have a back-up
set if/when they wear out. I really liked the look and feel of the Rustines
grips. My only gripe with those grips (ha!) is that the softness that makes
them nice feeling also makes them easy to tear/rip/abrade.

Good luck, Ben.

Best,
Shawn in PDX

Re: [RBW] Wool bandanas?

2021-02-02 Thread Shawn Granton
Smartwool makes one:
https://www.smartwool.com/shop/merino-150-bandana-sw005504
Dimensions aren't listed (thank you, "One Size") but it looks to be
standard bandana size.

I have a couple of Icebreaker merino bandanas I picked up several years ago
at Sierra Trading Post. It doesn't look like Icebreaker makes 'em anymore,
which is a shame. I really like mine.

Re: [RBW] Re: Is there a Riv-like three speed currently in production?

2020-12-22 Thread Shawn Granton
Hey Brett-

Glad to see that you are interested in re-introducing a three speed to the
stable! There have been some good suggestions so far. Most of the obvious
ground has been tread.

There are plenty of more budget modern options like the Linus and the
Public you had. But if you weren't plussed by the Public, I don't think any
of those options will make you happy.

Or, you can go with Pashley. They are a well-respected UK company still
making bikes in a traditional style, including lugs. Plus, the Guv'nor has
a cult-like following, similar to Rivendell. Though they don't have a Grant
Petersen equivalent. ;-) In any case, this would probably be the closest
thing to a "Rivlike three speed currently in production."

Another route is go vintage and modify. If you want to do the whole trad
three-speed experience, find a taller framed Raleigh Sports or equivalent
(23" frame), rebuild the wheels with alloy Sun CR18 rims, throw on some
modern Tektro brakes, and build the bike up the way you want. Or, find a
nice sport-touring frame from the '70s and '80s and build up a wheel with a
Sturmey-Archer AW hub or the like. The frame would be lighter/"sportier"
than the Sports frame.

Best,
Shawn in PDX
aka El Presidente, Society of Three Speeds

[RBW] FS: Assorted Trangia Stuff

2020-12-14 Thread Shawn Granton
Hello, friends! The endless purging of unused items continues, this time
some Trangia cook/stove stuff I don’t need. All prices are USD, and do not
include shipping. Shipping will start at $5 USD, depending on what and how
much you get. Local contactless pickup can be arranged (around Mount Tabor
in Portland OR), but you have to pre-pay first. Payment via PayPal or
Square Ca$h. Interested? Message me or drop me a line at
urbanadventurelea...@gmail.com and include your ZIP Code so I can sort out
shipping costs.

*Used stuff for $5 each*

   - Trangia brass burner. Seal is still pretty good.
   - Small windscreen. Designed for the 28-Backpacker set, but can be used
on its own. One “tab” is missing. I’d advise using an additional windscreen
(folded aluminum) around the stuff you are cooking as well (not included.)
Burner does not come with windscreen, purchase separately.
   - Small kettle for the 27 Stormcooker set, 0.6 litre capacity

New stuff for $10 each

   - Frying pan for the 27 Stormcooker set, anodized aluminum. 18cm/7in
diameter. You’ll need a pot grabber to use properly (not included.)
   - Strainer/cutting board for the 25 Stormcooker set. Designed to nest
into a 25 frying pan (not included), can be used to strain water from
pasta, etc. Also can be used as a cutting board.
   - Large kettle, 1.4 litre capacity. It will sit “atop” either the 25 or
27 Stormcooker sets (legs out like for frying pan), will not sit “in” the
   stormcooker.
   - Large saucepan/cookpot, 4.5 litre. Sits the same way as the large
   kettle above.

I've found that Campsaver is the best source in the US for Trangia stuff.
They tend to have everything, including spare/replacement bits. Looks like
they are running a special similar to REI until the end of the month: 20%
off one full-priced item.

[RBW] FS: Treetop Goods large rack bag, plus more

2020-10-08 Thread Shawn Granton
Hello, list of Riv-

I've got a large bike bag for sale. Custom made by David Banzer of Treetop
in Chicago, this rather large canvas bag is meant for a large front rack. I
had this specifically made for the Wald 257 Pizza Rack, but should also
work in the Wald 157 Giant Delivery Basket or some similarly obscene sized
platform “porteur” rack. The exterior has a “daisy chain” along the base
for small straps. Interior contains a small pocket sewn to the top.
Approximate dimensions 18″x13″x13″. Small abrasion hole on one of the
bottom corners, otherwise in good shape. *$40 plus shipping. **If
interested, message me or email me at urbanadventurelea...@gmail.com with
your ZIP code so I can determine shipping.*

To see photos of the bag and all the other items I have for sale, go here:

Re: [RBW] Winter Cleaning Grab-Bag: Bike Stuff, Camera, Electronics, more!

2020-01-24 Thread Shawn Granton
Update: Here is the complete new list. Some items have had their prices
lowered, that is indicated with *bold italic.*

*Free for postage:*

   - Velo Orange “Kraton” basket weave grips.
   - Sony Walkman, WM-FX488. Cassette deck plus four band radio:
AM/FM/Weather/VHF TV (fwiw). Battery door broken off, you can still power
it if you rubber band the battery in the compartment. Radio works, don’t
   know about the tape deck.

*$5*

   - Saddle cover: White with blue bicycles, made by “Hippie Thread”. Fits
   a B17 snugly.
   - Eton Raptor Radio. Emergency radio that is recharged either by solar
panel or via USB. AM/FM/Weather. Antenna and clip have broken off, but
   radio still works.
   - Johnson fanny pack. Green check, comes with strap. (Came from Rivelo
"garage sale" awhile back, I believe it was a Riv prototype.)
   -
   - *Barska 10×25 waterproof binoculars/field glasses. Comes with case.*
   -
*REI Co-op Sit Pad. Self-inflating and insulated, no leaks as far as I can
   tell. 16.5 x 12 x 1.5 in. Packs to 3.5 x 8 in. Comes with packing pouch. *

*$10*

   - Rustines Constructeur Grips, white rubber. Never mounted/used.
   - Dia-Compe ENE water bottle cage. Stainless steel, has tabs so it can
be mounted to frames without bosses (mounting equipment NOT included.)

*$15*

   - *Velo Orange Leather Saddle. I believe it’s a Model 6

 (VO
don’t make ’em anymore), a narrow racy saddle that’s trimmed on the edges.
Please note the “bulge” in the leather near the nose, hence the low price.*
   - *Ideale faux-leather saddle. Nope, not leather, but a coated fabric,
sort of like the Brooks Cambium but I can’t say for sure. Wider, touring
style saddle comparable to a B-67/B-68. Wolber stamped on side.*

Happy Tuesday, RBW List! It’s time for the never-ending sorting out what I
need and don’t, and purging the don’t. Check out what I got, get in touch
if you want.

Important Notes:

   - All prices listed DO NOT include shipping. Shipping will be done via

Okay! Just have two items left:

   - Dia Compe “E NE” cage (the one on the left) Has “tabs” which means you
can mount them with clamps $7
   - Fibrax “Raincheater” brake pads for caliper brakes. Designed for steel
rims, has a bit of leather in the pad so it works nominally better than
rubber in wet. One set. $5

[RBW] Re: Clothing (MUSA), bike stuff

2019-11-09 Thread Shawn Granton
Hello friends! Some things have sold, so it’s time to update my “for sale”
listing. I’ve reduced the price on most of the remaining items. Just to
note: This is the final listing. I’m not going to lower prices anymore. If
things don’t sell, I’ll use ’em again, sell them elsewhere, donate, or wait
until spring. If you want something, the time to act is now!

Notes:

   - All of these items for sale are functional (unless otherwise noted)
and in decent shape, but they all show signs of wear.
   - All prices in US Dollars.
   - Prices do not include shipping. All items will be shipped via USPS.
The minimum you’d be paying is $4 in shipping.
   - Payment can be done via PayPal.
   - I also do local pickup in Portland (North Tabor neighborhood). You can
pay via cash for local pickup.

Interested? Drop me a line with what you want, and include your zip code so
I can figure out shipping.

Here's what's left:

   - Makeshifter “Snackhole” bag. Waxed canvas with wool, comes with velcro
straps for mounting to handlebar and stem. Also has small outside pocket.
   $30
   - Crane “spacer mount” brass hammer strike bell (the one on the bottom
   of the pic). $7
   - Dia Compe “E NE” cage (the one on the left) Has “tabs” which means you
can mount them with clamps $7
   - German cycling mirror. Clamps to handlebars. Has scratches on the
   mirror. $5
   - Fibrax “Raincheater” brake pads for caliper brakes. Designed for steel
rims, has a bit of leather in the pad so it works nominally better than
rubber in wet. One set. $5

   - Fibrax “Raincheater” brake pads for caliper brakes. Designed for steel
rims, has a bit of leather in the pad so it works nominally better than
rubber in wet. One set. $5
   - Carradice saddlebag clamp. Designed for bags that strap to a saddle,
this bracket mounts to the rails of the saddle if your saddle doesn’t have
   loop holes. $10
   - Tektro FL750 Brake Lever, left only. The attachment bolt threading is
a bit stripped, can be “fixed” by using a longer bolt and nut. $3
   - Soma “Thick and zesty” cork handlebar tape. Natural color. $5

Re: [RBW] Re: Issues with slipping bosco bars?

2019-10-15 Thread Shawn Granton
Hello all-

Out of curiosity, does the metal make any difference in slipping? If you
had a slipping set, what was it made out of?

Boscos come both in heat-treated aluminum and chromoly steel. I put a pair
of Boscos on my Raleigh Crested Butte four years ago to replace a pair of
Civia Duponts. The Duponts were similar, but (probably untreated) aluminum
and had quite a bit of "flex" in the bars. I got the Boscos in steel
partially because they were cheaper than the aluminum bars, but also
because I wanted a less "flexy" feeling. Four years later they're still
working good, and I haven't had any slip.

Best,
Shawn in PDX

I'd urge anyone seeking out Pacific Coast Bike Touring experience in book
form to NOT seek out the Kirkendall/Spring version of the Bicycling the
Pacific Coast, as the last edition came out over ten years ago (and was
already shop-worn then.) Instead, seek out the NEW Cycling the Pacific
Coast book put out by Bill Thorness. He took over the book from
Kirkendall/Spring, and created a fresh new version that came out last year.
It's much more thorough and more accurate than what's come out in the past.

[RBW] FS: Rubber Grips, cafe (rear wheel) lock

2019-06-29 Thread Shawn Granton

Happy Weekend, List of Riv:

Alright, this should be the last for sale post for a little bit. Sorting
out "the bike workshop" I found a few more things that should be passed on
to someone who can use it.

*Purchase/Ordering Notes:* Price does not include postage. (Postage
estimate for US orders is between $3-8) If you are interested, please
message me at urbanadventurelea...@gmail.com with your ZIP Code. Payment
can be made via PayPal. Live in the Portland, Oregon area? We can do local
pickup, within reason, preferably in North Tabor/Montavilla, where I’m
based. No cash sales this time, you’ll still need to commit to the purchase
via PayPal if you are local.

   - *YVS Cafe (Rear Wheel) Lock:* A very European city bike accessory,
this simple lock mounts to the seatstays fore of the brakes. The lock
prevents the rear wheel from moving, good for a quick run into the cafe
(hence its common name.) Or, use it in conjunction with another lock for
added security. Includes two keys but no mounting hardware. (I use zip ties
to mount.) This is the style of lock that does not integrate with a chain
or cable. (But you can put the loop of a cable through the shank.) *$10*
   - *Rustines Constructeur rubber grips, white. *A very nice French grip, sold
   by Velo Orange.

Soft and comfortable. Designed for MTB bars (22.2) but since they are soft
rubber, should be able to stretch to fit road (23.8) bars. New in box,
   never been used! *$12*
   - *Kraton "Basket Weave" Grips.* Another set of soft rubber grips sold
   by Velo Orange.

Designed

for MTB bars (22.2) but since they are soft rubber, should be able to
stretch to fit road (23.8) bars. These ones have been used. *$3*

[RBW] FS: Carradice Nelson Longflap saddlebag

2019-06-28 Thread Shawn Granton
Hello Riv list!

Well, still finding some things that I don’t need anymore. This time I have
available a classic British transverse canvas saddlebag!

This circa 2012 *Carradice Nelson Longflap* features 100% waterproof waxed
cotton duck and is handmade in the UK. The approximate measurements are
35cm (14 in) (50cm or 20 in including pockets) wide x 21cm (8.25 in) (25cm
or 10 in when extended) high x 20cm (8 in) deep. Approximate capacity of 15
to 18 litres (depending on the flap). The long flap is great for getting in
“a little bit more” when you need to, like with a camping trip! (Ask me how
I know) The extra bit of flap snaps into itself when not being used. There
are two inserts on the flap in which you can slide straps and lash more
stuff to the bag (like a tent!) And the interior features the newer design
of shock cord draw string to “cinch” up the interior.

I’ve had this bag for a few years, and it shows signs of wear and fading
(or beausage if you will.) There have been a few repairs here and there.
But the condition overall is good. These bags were built to last and the
Carradice Nelson will give you years of use. Three white leather straps
included for mounting.

*Price: $70*

Purchase/Ordering Notes: Price does not include postage. If you are
interested, please message me at urbanadventurelea...@gmail.com with your
ZIP Code. Payment can be made via PayPal. Live in the Portland, Oregon
area? We can do local pickup, within reason, preferably in North
Tabor/Montavilla, where I’m based. No cash sales this time, you’ll still
need to commit to the purchase via PayPal if you are local.

[RBW] FS: Small bike bags: Acorn, Riv/Sackville, Philosophy

2019-06-27 Thread Shawn Granton
Hello all-

It’s the endless clearing-out-of-hardly-used items here at UAL HQ! Today I
have on the docket three different smallish sized bags. All show signs of
use (or if you prefer, beusage). All are cotton/canvas bags, made here in
the US.

*Purchase/Ordering Notes:* Prices do not include postage. If you are
interested, please message me at urbanadventurelea...@gmail.com with your
ZIP Code. Payment can be made via PayPal. Live in the Portland, Oregon
area? We can do local pickup, within reason, preferably in North
Tabor/Montavilla, where I’m based. No cash sales this time, you’ll still
need to commit to the purchase via PayPal if you are local.

   - *Acorn Handlebar (Barrel) Bag.* This is an older, more deluxe version
of the (always sold out) current version depicted here.

(And it doesn’t appear like Acorn is currently offering green.) This bag
seems to be of the same overall dimensions/capacity (dimensions: 11″w x 5″,
dia (28 x 13 cm), handlebar strap spacing: 5.5″ ctc, capacity: approx. 2.75
L). This model features a bigger flap with draw cord plus a bonus pocket.
Shock cords for side stabilizing also included. *$60*
   - *Rivendell Sackville Banana Sax.* This “oversize wedge saddle bag” was
made in Connecticut, just like me! (Fun fact: I briefly went to school in
Waterbury, where the bags were made. I even remember the Naugatuck Valley
Mall!) You can see full info on the bag here.

The

brown color of this bag doesn’t seem to be one Rivendell offers anymore.
   *$70*
   - *Philosophy Small Shoulder Bag.* Philosophy is a defunct Portland area
bag maker well known for quality canvas bike (and not) bags. Their website
is also defunct, but you can read testimonials from Carryology

   and Lovely Bicycle.

This

is a small shoulder bag that can be used as a makeshift pannier via the bag
loops using straps or carabiners. (A detachable and very basic shoulder
strap is included.) This bag measures 12″x11″x2″, good for books and
not-bulky things. The straps are a snap/buckle combo. Two pockets under the
flap with key ring, plus a small organizer pocket inside. *$30*

[RBW] FS: MUSA bottoms in XL (shorts/knickers)

2019-06-07 Thread Shawn Granton
Hello List of Riv-

I've got a couple of MUSA bottoms that I don't need/use anymore. Both are
functional, but neither are new looking. Maybe you can use them?

   - MUSA shorts, grey, XL: These are in the best shape, but show a bit of
abrasion/wear, there's a few spots of discoloration as well. *$25
   shipped*
   - MUSA knickers, butternut, XL: I've had them for about seven years (and
bought them used from someone else on this list.) These are the velcro
strap version at the thighs. I won't sugarcoat it, these things have seen a
lot of use. Patches, stitches, missing buttons, abrasions/holes, and that
butternut color is definitely well aged. But still perfectly functional,
esp. if you want to make some more repairs to them. *$10 shipped*
   - Get both the shorts and knickers together for *$30*

I can take payment via PayPal. Please direct message me if you are
interested.

[RBW] FS: MUSA shorts, U-Fix, size XL

2018-10-31 Thread Shawn Granton
Hello folks-

I have a pair of MUSA shorts, size XL that I've got kicking around. They
are overall good, but need repair to make them completely functional again,
and I'm not going to get around to fixing . The elastic belt has been
replaced in last couple years. There are spots and such from years of use.
Both rear pocket buttons are missing. And the right rear pocket is
separating from body, needs restitching.

I'm asking $15 for these shorts, price includes shipping in the US. Payment
can be done via PayPal or Square Ca$h. Please message me if you are
interested.

To note: Spring/Kirkendell no longer do this book. Their final (4th)
edition came out in 2005, and was a bit shopworn then.
Bill Thorness has taken over the title, and put out a new edition this year:

While the Spring/Kirkendell run was good for its time, the new Thorness

You are right in thinking there are more options for a basket bag then

Joe-

While Ortliebs are indeed great and waterproof, I'd disagree that you *have*
to go that route for 'hardcore rainy commute riding". Canvas still works
great and that's primarily what I use in these rainy Cascadian winters. If
the bartubes had a more significant flap, the water most likely wouldn't
get in. I have an Acorn handlebar bag that is similar to the bartube, but
has a big flap protecting the zipper. So far, no issues.

[RBW] Re: Bartubes discontinued

2017-12-05 Thread Shawn Granton
Regarding the waterproofness of the Bartube:
While it is true that the canvas is waterproof, the zipper isn't. And while
there's a "lip" over the zipper, this lip disappears if you fill the tube
up well enough, inviting the rain to get into the zipper pretty easily.

I had the Brand V version for a year or so and rode it in rainy Portland.
The rain getting in through the zipper was the main reason I sold it.

[RBW] Re: Ibex shutting down?!?!?!

2017-12-01 Thread Shawn Granton
It is a shame. Here's a story with a little more info:
https://www.adventure-journal.com/2017/12/beloved-wool-brand-ibex-shutting-february/

I really liked their wool T-Shirts, they seem to last longer and have a
more "traditional" t-shirt fit than the Icebreaker stuff. (Haven't tried
Smartwool shirts so can't compare.) Their wool undies are great, too.

I'll have to be a dissenting voice in regards to their bike-specific stuff.
I had a pair of their bike shorts for a bit, and didn't like them. Okay,
the actual wool part was great, but that thick padding...ugh, so
uncomfortable. If they used a lighter, more "trad" padding, I would have
kept them. But then again, I realized I'm not a "bike shorts" kinda guy
(nor bike jerseys.)

Patrick- The older (pre Sunrace) ones were the "slippy" ones. The "No

2017-11-09 Thread Shawn Granton
A bit late to this, sorry. But the Deacon asked me off-list about Three
Speed Mountain Bike Resources, and as a (semi-competent) go-to for things
three speeds, I figure I should say *something.*

Alas, there is no "go-to" list for three speed mountain biking, but to
cover some of the points brought up in this thread:

   - *Why just three for an IGH (internally geared hub) vs 5, 11, 14,
infinity? *Well, I think Deacon Patrick nailed it on the head when
talking about *simplicity*. Yes, you will not get the range of something
bigger (whether IGH or derailleur) but you think *less* about shifting.
Not as "pure" as a single speed, but not as "corrupt" as a 3x11 setup.
Also, *three speed hubs are cheap*, relatively speaking (not counting
the cost of building a wheel if need be.) Heck, you can go to your local
bike co-op and probably find a bin of old AW hubs and get a functional one
for next-to-nothing. You aren't going to find that with a bigger IGH. And
even if you do, there are other costs: I "scored" an Alfine 11 hub for
nothing a couple years back, back when they were still like $600 MSRP. But
it didn't come with a shifter, and that's like $150* alone.* Heck, you
could get the AW hub plus shifter and other bits for that much.
   - *The difference between older (pre Sunrace) Sturmey Archer AW three
speed hubs vs new (Sunrace). *Yes, the old AW hub had that annoying
"neutral" that could happen, but that was usually either because a) the
cable/indicator chain was incorrectly adjusted b) standing up when
pedalling (frame flexes and pulls cable out of adjustment) or c) a
combination of the two. And even the "mediocre" AW hubs of the later
Sturmey Archer years are still *good. *There are plenty of bikes still
running old AW hubs. The one on my Superbe is from 1954 and runs great. But
I also don't pedal while standing up! ;-)
   - *Torque. *The problem with most IGHs are their tolerance of torque.
For most old hubs, it's not recommended to go under a 2:1 ratio. Some
people have gone under and not had any problems. A few destroyed their
hubs. I think a lot has to do with "rider input", like weight and riding
style. A lighter rider will probably have less issues with destroying a hub
if they go under the 2:1 ratio
   - *Gearing.* An old AW is simple, and limiting. The low you're going to
safely get is going to be upper-30's (gear-inches). That's not the low-low
of mid-teens you can get from some modern drivetrains, but it is not bad.
Portland isn't exactly flat, and I climb the hills with my Raleigh Superbe.
The other day I went up Mount Tabor with grades as high as 7%, and managed.
I did a tour a few years back in the Driftless Region of SW Wisconsin with
Pondero and GravelDoc on a loaded three speed and managed some 8% grinds.
No, it's not as optimal as the 15 gear-inch bike climb, and no, I wouldn't
do a sustained 20 mile climb with a 7% grade, but it worked for what I did.
   - *Those Old Spokes Home 3 Speed MTBs: *They look SWEET! I want one now.
Deacon, maybe just order one of theirs for experimentation? ;-) And I
highly doubt they would sell bikes like that if they needed constant
servicing. They've proven reliable for them, and they put them through the
   paces, including winter.
   - *About winter:* Yes, AW hubs work in extreme conditions. My friend
Keith has ridden AW equipped bikes through the dead of Edmonton winter for
years. He does use a lighter weight oil for those months (which is one of
the advantages to the older oil-filled AW hubs of the pre-Sunrace takeover.)

So, should one experiment? Yes!

Now, I don't think a three speed is going to fulfill all the needs for a
"modern" mountain bike, especially if one is going to do lots of steep
climbing. But people have been bashing about on three speeds for rough
stuff for eons, like the UK based Rough Stuff Fellowship. They've been
going at it since the 50's. Back then I'm sure most of the member's bikes
had three speed hubs, yet they went all sorts of crazy places in the
English countryside, up rough and rude paths. Of course, there was some
pushing involved, and they didn't expect to do 8% grades at a high cadence.
But they still *did it.*

And anyone who has read this far and is still interested: Seek out the work
of Geoff Apps, considered the father of UK mountain biking, working at the
same time as the Repack folks. His custom machines usually used drum brakes
and hub gears, and he pedalled through all sorts of terrain and conditions.

Finally, why can't that Paul Melvin only take a cog up to 20 teeth? ;-)

yours,
Shawn

Have patience, Patrick. I know that Carradice is one of those items that
resellers sometimes inflate the price, but if you're patient, you'll find
one. I snagged my Camper Longflap in almost-new condition off of eBay for
$70 a few years back.

2017-11-03 Thread Shawn Granton
I've sold my share of Carradice bags as well, as I tested out the various
sizes/styles. I've come to realize that I like the longflap versions, so
I've reduced my supply to two: Nelson Longflap and Camper Longflap.

Just figured I'd plug a fellow list member who makes nice saddlebags albeit
smaller and unlongflapped, David at Treetop:

*Frumpy and dumpy?* Well, to each their own...
I actually like the look of Carradice bags, and they are one of those
things that wear well. Beausage, if you will. People are still using bags
that were made 50 years ago, and unlike some modern bags, you can repair
them.

number of speeds, size of wheel, and spoke count.
Thanks,
Shawn

Re: [RBW] Wald 257 rack

2017-09-01 Thread Shawn Granton
I've had a Wald 257 on my Raleigh Crested Butte for over a year and LOVE
IT. It is quite the heavy-duty rack, and HEAVY (I'm guessing about 8
pounds) but it definitely hauls the stuff.

As for the struts being "flimsy": I STRONGLY disagree. The struts are stout
and also adjustable, so a variety of heights can be accommodated. I'm
guessing that the struts are steel, but I won't know for sure until I go
home to check. And it also makes a convenient place to mount a light.

For those of you comparing this rack to other Wald baskets: *It's
different. *Everything is beefier, including the tubing on the "basket"
part, and the struts.

yours,
Shawn

[RBW] Re: Show me your touring/camping setup!

Here's a couple recent shots of my Bantam loaded up. I switch it up a bit,
but there's generally a front "rando" style bag (North St), a frame bag
(Jandd) and a saddlebag (Carradice.) And yes, there is food in there! ;-)

Re: [RBW] Warm weather bike clothing, long sleeved

2017-07-07 Thread Shawn Granton
I know this may be an unpopular opinion here, but I like the long sleeved
shirts offered by major outdoor brands. Yeah, they are synthetic, but they
do the job, and are lightweight. Great for bringing on a bike tour, since
they dry fast and can be crammed in your clothing bag without worry of
wrinkling. (Plus, they don't take up much space.) I often look for ones
billed as "fishing shirts".

[RBW] WTB: XL MUSA Knickers with the velcro ankle straps

2017-06-21 Thread Shawn Granton
Hello fine folks, I figured I'd throw this out there.

I have had a pair of the MUSA Knickers with the velcro straps at the ankle
for a few years. I love them, and have gotten them repaired a few times.
Now they need more repairs and I'd like to see if there may be a
replacement pair out there before I sink a bunch more money into keeping
this pair going. I've had the newer knickers with the different belt and
the "buckle" style ankle closure, and just never liked them as much.

So if you have a pair of the velcro XL MUSA knickers in decent shape and
are willing to part with them, please get in touch! Not super picky about
the colors, either.

yours,
Shawn in PDX

[RBW] Re: Best way to move bikes cross-country?

2017-04-19 Thread Shawn Granton
Tracy, where are you moving to? I think you are in Denver now. If it's to
another city with Amtrak service that has baggage service, you can ship the
bike via Amtrak Express. I think the rates are typically $50-75 plus the
box which costs $15. The big benefit to using their box is that it's the
same super duper size box used if you went on the train. It's a lot larger
than the standard bike box you'd get from a shop. All you need to do to
pack is 1) remove pedals and 2) turn handlebars. You will need to deliver
the bike to a station and pick up from a station, though.

Re: [RBW] Re: Opinions on saddlebags? Swift vs. Carradice vs. Sackville

2017-04-17 Thread Shawn Granton
Hey Eric-

I had the small version of their saddlebag for a few years. It was fine.
You are correct in thinking the quality isn't going to be as nice as the
other options. I found that the leather wasn't as good, and since the
canvas isn't as thick or stiff as others, the bag can sag. If you already
own a Minnehaha and know what to expect, the bag should serve you well.

Before you decide, you should first do a check of that internet auction
site to see if there are any Carradice bags for around that price.
Sometimes you can luck out!

Shawn

The Carradice bag you have looks to be a Nelson longflap, not a Camper
longflap. Still a good bag, and big, but not Camper big.

The way to tell is on the flaps: The Camper has metal "D" loops for straps:
http://www.carradice.co.uk/bags/saddlebags/originals-camper-longflap-saddlebag

Whereas the Nelson has a leather covered "slot" for straps:
