I had a big blue one, the 66cm from 198?

700x38 Passelas with some mid-reach Tektro worked very, very well!

[RBW] FS: wild-style 80's Klein // XT M737/8/9

Hello Riv-ster / BOB-ber crossover community.

Clearing a hook and a small parts hoard. An extremely good looking Klein 
Pinnacle and a grip of a certain XT era. Here are some links to Craigslist

[RBW] FS: XL Trek 620 Frameset, StumpJumper knock offs & more

Howdy folks.

Selling a few items here. Mostly framesets w/ extras. The Trek was a bike 
intended for personal use but no go due to sizing. The "bi-plane + 
bullmoose" frame/fork/bar combos (Sekai Bigfoot & Bianchi proto-Grizzly) 
are an attempt to help a pal minimize his rather large vintage mountain ATB 
hoard. The complete Novara is more or less a classy-classic "go fast" parts 
bin bike.

[RBW] FS: XL Rando-style Waxed Canvas & Leather Handlebar Bag

For sale is my Treetop handle bar bag. Made in Chicago, IL by iBob/RBWOG 
member David Banzer. 

This bag is perfect for a large-frame bicycle in so many ways. Alas - I am 
a basket man, through and through. 

Classic looking, Berthoud-inspired construction of Martexin waxed canvas 
with leather trim. Color scheme exquisitely matches any brown or honey 
Brooks/shellacked cloth & twine motif. The bag was designed to sit on a 
Nitto M32 or M1 and does so perfectly, yet will work fine with a number of 
other front racks. David left off protruding side pockets for better cable 
routing when running bar end shifters. Slim ones instead allow storage of a 
few tools, maps, thin book, etc. Otherwise the capacity on this thing is 
huge, it's the Carradice Camper Longflap of handlebar bags. I've never seen 
one as big and beautiful. And yet when paired with a frame 60cm and up it 
looks quite proportionate. D rings on the side work great for a shoulder 
strap or guyline-style lashing to the bars in case you really wanna load 
this thing up. Corrugated plastic inserts for stiffening can be removed if 
so desired. Super tough leather underside for durability with many options 
for lashing or affixing this bag more permanently. 

Dimension of the main cavity, not including width added by exterior pockets:
11.5" top to bottom X 10" side to side X 7" front to back.
Bottom of bag to center of decaleur crossbar is 9.5" 

Also included are the basic Velo Orange decaleur (for 1" steerer) and a 
vintage camera strap for shoulder-carry. A few images show a Nitto M-1 rack 
for frame of reference only; it shant be included in the sale.

A few things to note:
Clear map case on top top bag cracked and split so i removed it.
The velcro for the map case (top, aft part of the bag) is VERY strong and 
pull apart some of its own stitching. A moot point since the map case cover 
has been removed.
Clasp on the front pocket worked its way loose. My short term remedy was to 
loop the elastic over and under the front rack tab (in turn this provided 
better back stability.

[RBW] FS: Black Mountain Cycles Road Plus 59cm

Posted this FS awhile back with a few other frames. Price is staying the 
same but I'm throwing in some Nitto & Compass to maybe sweeten the deal. 
Due to COVID-19-related concerns I'm out of work for at least a few months 
and will soon need to pay the remainder on the Bantam Bicycle Works custom 
(insert emoji gritting teeth // making nervous face here).

I bought this direct from Mike Varley in August of 2018. It's the biggest 
one they make - 59cm, Aurora Red. It also happens to be the same size the 
designer, himself, rides so it was very cool to be able to discuss the 
build and concept over the phone with someone who knows this bicycle better 
than any other, and to be able to get the set up right for the rider on the 
top end of the height & fit. Steerer tube is uncut.

It's in excellent condition, definitely not even 1K miles on it. (Plenty of 
mud & dirt on the bike in the photos but cosmetic condition of this bike is 
near-pristine!) There will be way too much overlap with the Road Plus bike 
and the coming custom; so whereas I love this bike and it's super fun - I

have called it. The high saddle height & 130mm Technomic in the photos tell 
the tale- it's a touch on the small side for me.

with a slightly up-sloping angle reminiscent of the 2.5 degree angle of my 
Toyo Atlantis. Standover height with the RTP's is about 34 7/8" if you

[RBW] Blue Lug bars arrived today

So I've been gravitating more and more towards flat bars. In a big way. I'm 
also a bit of a Nitto junkie.

I've always been a fan of 48 Noodles & Albatross bars. I never had a bike 
where a Bosco or Choco seemed appropriate. The "Jitensha" 2522AA bars are a 
really cool design/concept but at a wide-shouldered 6' 5" there was just no 
way they'd work for any kind of riding that I do. I really dug the Riv-spec 
Bullmoose on several of my '83, '84, '65 Trek 800 series rebuilds. 

I don't race. I don't own a car. I commute by bike. I also tour a lot and 
most of the long days in the saddle are "fully loaded" and off-pavement. 
I've now done multiple 7-14 day tours on the Sim Works Get Around bar. Zero 
hand cramps or comfort issues. I'm absolutely in love with this handlebar. 
I was really into the Ahearne Map 610's for awhile, but (to me) the Get 
Around blew them out of the water. 

There's a ti version of the Get Around that's both prohibitively priced and 
out of stock. Sim Works just got the Get Around back in stock after a 
looong hiatus but the price rose from $40ish to $60ish for the Cro-Mo bar, 
which prompted me to look elsewhere in order to perhaps try out something 
new for a similar price point.

So I put in an order with Blue Lug in order to try some of the Nitto 
offerings less common in the States. The two I settled on were the For 
Shred (which apparently is also available from VO) and the B802 HT (a 
mysterious-to-me bar the I was and am very intrigued by), both in 25.4.

It's easy to find lots of pics of the For Shred bar, but the 802 is more 
elusive. I intend to post some pics and reviews of these bars over the next 
few weeks, schedule pending. Anyone riding these bars?

[RBW] Gus & Susie/Wolbis "Ride Feel" contribution thread

Hey folks. I was lucky enough to be part of the Rivelo-Grant-Hillibike meet 
up yesterday.

I have been lightly discussing the XL Susie in an email thread with other 
list members but thought I'd bring it here since I had the good fortune of 
being part of the event. My review won't be a super well-written one. It 
may also not be the most linear recollection of facts/feelings but I 
thought to get a thread going based on actual rider experience with the new 
batch of Rivs, being that they're now available for pre-order. Here's my 
quick recap to get things started:

I rode the XL Susie. The bike had 29x2.8" knobbies which felt super plush, 
PSI unknown. I really expected the big long bike to "start up" a little 
slower but that was not the case! I spun a few blocks around Rivelo; jumped 
some curbs and whatnot. The bike felt quick. I did not take note of 
chainring size/ cassette spread but I did have the bike in highest gear 
rather quickly. I also thought the front end would feel way more stretched 
out but it did not. The bike had Billie bars and what seemed like a 
90/100mm quill stem. I'd have preferred something of the flatter/more 
MTB-ey variety and maybe a 110mm stem. I'd have REALLY preferred to be able 
to ride some trails, some steep ups & downs but hey- I was happy to have 
the opportunity to ride one and rap with Grant a bit about the bike.

For the those "maximum rubber" types out there like myself - with the 2.8" 
Teravail knobby tire, still plenty of room to go bigger. I'd guess a 3" 
would fit without issue, maybe larger. I could fit my index finger almost 
up to the first knuckle on either side at the chainstays where clearances 
were tightest. Seatstay & fork crown: clearance for days. Not trying to 
undermine any one or thing jhere; just sayin' that if I get one of these 
bikes I'll definitely be trying to go for 3".

All in all the bike felt excellent. I haven't ridden a Jones or Big Dummy. 
I have owned several RIv's and vintage MTB's with longer chainstays but 
this was my first experience with a 50cm+ chainstay and it felt really, 
really good. No one can argue with you if you simply don't love the look of 
the long-chainstay-ed bicycle. If you think Grant's being ridiculous (and 
I'm guessing most of the haters haven't ridden the long chainstay 
iterations of the newer Riv models), you should really try one with your 
pretenses aside. These really are fantastic riding bikes.

Howdy all! Moving some stuff along. I do not have photos of any of this 
stuff at the moment. I'm hoping to have the time this weekend to get images 
of everything. Mostly everything is in great shape or otherwise noted; 
tried to be as descriptive as possible nonetheless. Prices do not include 
shipping. Let me know if I've forgotten anything; PM for questions & the

1. Schwalbe Thunder Burts 700c X 2.1" - $35 // pair
The SLE TLE ADDIX Speed variety. These tires haven't even been ridden 500 
miles, however the somewhat fragile Addix compound gave way to 2 small 
spots of wear due to a juvenile skidding incident. The tire that was up 
front is in great shape. I've swapped back to commuter tires and moving 
these along. Priced accordingly.  

2. Schwalbe Racing Ralph 650b X 2.25" - $40 // pair
Ridden less than 200 miles. Folding bead. Excellent shape.

3. Panaracer Gravel King 650b X 42 - $40 // pair
Slicks; black tread/black sidewalls. These tires have been ridden and show 
some signs of wear but are in good shape. Many miles left in 'em.

4. Compass Rat Trap Pass 26" X 2.3" - $95 // pair
Approx 200 miles on these tires. Tan sidewall. Tread & sidewalls are in 
great shape.

5. Velocity Atlas rims X 2; 650b, 36h, polished + machined sidewalls. $150 
// pair
Brand new, never laced. These were a special order direct from Velocity, 
hence the machined sidewalls. So shiny & nice. Bought these for the 
forthcoming custom but tire selection ultimately dictated the decision to 
go with a wider rim. I paid $150 each for these rims, selling the pair for 
the price of one.

6. Nitto Moustache handlebar - $25
Model # RN016, 25.4 clamp. The usual tape residue & lever markings but in 
great shape.

7. Nitto dirt drop stem - $25
The Specialized-branded, early Stumpjumper/Rockhopper OEM. 26.0 clamp

8. Nitto Noodle drop bar - $35
48cm width, 26.0 clamp. Some tape gunk but in fantastic shape. I love these 
bars and have to admit I've been hoarding...

9. King Cage X 3 - $35 // set of 3
Their stainless, standard bottle cage. 3 of 'em, in great shape. Sold all 
together

10. Revelate Pika seat bag - $75
Black. One teeny tiny hole on the underside from small frame/big knobby 
tire situation (see photos). Myriad ways to patch 'er up and maintain the 
integrity/waterproof-ness of this super tuff piece of MUSA gear.

11. Rivendell Baggins Bag - $125
I'm almost certain this is the Adam's bag. Purchased recently off the list; 
I thought I was getting the Hoss, my mistake. Super nice bag and in 
excellent condition.

SHIFTING & BRAKING STUFF

[RBW] Long shot? WTB: Nitto S84 Lugged seatpost - 300mm

Apparently Riv only sells the 250mm length version of this. I could maaaybe 
make that work but I see plenty of the 300mm versions of the S84 on ebay. 
Figured I'd come here first.

300mm only, please. 250mm is just not enough post. I know what you might be 
thinking but my reality is more akin to two fistfuls showing. So be it.

Holler if you've got something. The IRD wayback post costs just as much and 
looks like doo-doo compared to the lugged Nitto jawn.

Got some other fancy 300mm silver/polished post with a lot of setback? I'm 
open.  Wanna trade for a Nitto S65 & some cash? I've got a 250mm and a 
300mm.

2 variations: with or without hubs

All parts and bits cleaned, inspected and overhauled if/as I saw fit. 
Originally destined for a Compass Rat Trap Pass build that's going on the 
back-most burner in lieu of recent deposit on a custom off road touring f/f 
(hence the need to generate some funds) 

Here's the list:

-M732 canti set; w/ pads and straddles, very good condition.
-M730 170mm OR 175mm triple,110/74 BCD, VG condition. (Pick your crank arm 
length, turns out I've got a set in 2 lengths. 170mm arms not yet pictured 
but they're in excellent condition)
-BL-L331 levers, hoods in great shape, very good condition*
-M731 pedals; lower-profile version of the big honkin' M730 predecessors, 
toe cage-compatible.
-M733 levers, very good condition, w/ rubber covers, oversized ferrules and 
brass cable head snuggler thingys.
-M732 front derailleur, very good condition (I've got an LX top pull if 
bottom isn't what you require)
-M732 rear derailleur, very good condition
-M732 thumb shifters; these are the ones that say 7 but have 8 clicks on SIS
-XT 11-28 8spd cassette

HUBSET- 36h front and rear, 110/130mm spacing, high polish, excellent 
condition. Uniglide hub body swapped out for a 105 8/9/10. I'll throw in 
the original Uniglide body and cassette If you'd like to have them.

EXTRAS if you want 'em
-original XT quick release skewers for seatpost, front and rear wheels
-matching unsealed bottom bracket 
-original XT chain

*Although not a true part of the XT group, I'm including the 331 levers of 
the same SLR era/inscription in case you wanna switch between handlebar set 
ups while keeping your machine aesthetically congruent/period correct. Let 
me know if you're not interested in these; happy to keep 'em and knock a 
few bucks of the price.

[RBW] OT- Death Valley on foot

Hi all-

Lookin' to my fellow Rivsters for tips on Death Valley. 

Headin' there for a week with my sis. Looking to do hikes and backpacking 
if resources allow. We're fairly experienced desert backwoodsies but know 
little about DV. We'll be driving in from Vegas with a rental car, but 
nothing with clearance for jeep roads. Our backs are good for schlepping 
enough water for an overnighter, but maybe not two. Dunno how the whole 
government being shut down thing will affect this but we'll just hafta find 
out.

There's some magic in this combo! 

I've been running the Hi Riser with Get Around's on my beloved (and 
slightly too small for me) 24" Trek 850 dirt tourer.

Hands down my favorite bar/stem combo (at the moment).

I've only seen one Hi Riser come up on the list and it went fast. It's not 
a cheap part but I testify you'll wish you wouldn't have waited and ordered 
one from Riv...let's hope they're in stock!

[RBW] Ode to Grampa / My Atlantis

A bit of snow laid on down last night. Today's sun rose to reveal a good 
bit still holding on. The day itself promised to be a fine one, perfect 
even- sunny, crisp-cold...and no work!

My grandfather was a boilermaker & steelworker in Pittsburgh, PA, my 
homelands. Today is his birthday; the 15th we celebrate without him with us 
here on Earth.  He's often a part of my thoughts while riding, but today is 
special for obvious reasons. I mention this and him for this reason: So 
much of what I think the general RBW school of thought embodies has a lot 
to do, philosophically and/or historically, with strength and simplicity, 
of both animate and not, and most certainly certain folk from his time; 
tough as nails while still being as sweet as pie. I'm grateful for it, 
grateful for it all. The bicycle has brought more good to my life than any 
other non-living thing. RBW/Grant and everyone from this camp I've met 
along the way are a benchmark of highest order & this bicycle, my '04 Toyo 
Atlantis, is the functional symbol of it all & a reminder of these

Thinning the wintry wardrobe. Garments for the taller folks. I'm 6' 5", 190 
lbs, 96 pbh, 33" waist. All of these worn/used by me at least for a little. 
Most things fit right on the money; things too big or too small noted in 
item description. That's me in the photos so you can hopefully see how 
things fit. Half of these items I really dig/think are special, nifty and 
neat and in that way opt against wearing them. Babied, they sit in my 
closet and they don't deserve that!

[RBW] WTB: Nitto dirt drop stem 10cm, Rat Trap Passes & odd sized classy seat posts

Howdy folks,

The stem- Yes I do have one of these in my personal stash, of course. But! 
Building a dirt tourer up for my best bud and need one of these. 10cm 
extension only; gotta get them Portolas up high!
The tires- RTP's in decent to good condition, gumwall/standard 
casing/tubeless compatible only. Longshot here, but who knows? I'm lucky to 
have Norther a mile away where these things are perpetually in stock.
The posts- looking for 2 sizes, 26.2 (ol' Stumpy) & 26.8 ('85 Trek 850). I 
love the Dajia's that VO (& Norther) carries; Maybe you've got one or 
something similar? Can't be scratched up, should be on the longer side & 
PRETTY. 

Lemme know if you've got something you're interested in unloading. Rarely 
see these in the "used FS" dept. for good reason; figured I'd try here 
quick before putting the order in to Riv & my LBS.

Nitto Heat-treated North Road bars B352. 2" trimmed from each end, 
scratches at clamp. $20
Nitto seat post S67, single bolt, 300mm X 28.6 (sic!). $20
XT M735 front derailleur, bottom pull, clamp on 1 3/8". $20

Miller signature. Love that thing.

Howdy bunch.

I've got some serious top shelf stuff that's seriously just sitting on the 
shelf! All the items are in very very good condition. As a blessing and 
curse alike- I may be losing access to my work/storage space in my 
apartment, so I'm preempting with some downsizing.

I bought this from a RBWOG member in June of 2016 and finally got around to 
building it up June 2017. My love for it is only as immense as the overlap 
with my Atlantis and am having a hard time justifying its tenure in the

i've got probably 10-12 100+ mile days on the trusty albatross under the 
belt...and w/ touring accoutrements. depends on so many things, though! i 
ride many bars, always. but at current they're my forever bar, for what 
little it may be worth.

Older model with the metal tag & stamped serial number. Very good condition 
except for some suspected "tombstone abuse", where the leather slot seems 
to have splayed out a centimeter or so on either side (see image). Canvas & 
zippers are all in very good and all leather recently treated. "Removable 
flaptop pocket" included, also in very good condition. Includes two 14" 
leather straps w/ buckles & two 14" leather straps w/ snaps.

Chris King 2Nut 1" threaded headset, silver w/ spacers. $95
Super beautiful and hardly used. Professionally installed/uninstalled.

I think it might be just right for one of several of my TSFM 
(too-small-for-me) mtb projects.

I've found some older Ritchey 1" quills in the used bins around town. They 
look similar but obviously much less quill.

If anyone has a HiRiser or something similar lying around drop me a PM. 
(I've got a box of Technomics so not really interested in those, thanks.)
