[RBW] Cheviot at Community Cycles in CO

2021-12-12 Thread luckyturnip
Whilst perusing the internet I saw a large Cheviot in the inventory at
Community Cycles in Boulder, CO.

https://communitycycles.org/bike-shop/used-bikes-for-sale/

No affiliation or idea if it’s still there.

[RBW] Cheviot questions

2021-05-13 Thread 'Joel S' via RBW Owners Bunch
Looking at the geometry charts it appears that the 50cm Cheviot has 45cm
chainstays , so short by Riv’s current standards. Also with sidepull brakes
(not sure how this works with room for fat tires). Can anyone comment on
this?

Right now I have 2 Rivs with toptubes and am fine with them. A step thru
might be nice if one of these can be found.. a knee replacement and
bad back might make this viable.

Your info on this bike especially the tire clearance would be appreciated.
I am not a fan of the long chainstay models. Fenders would not be used, I
ride in dry conditions.

Thank you

Joel

drop bars and can do more sprightly riding with it. This is a great two

[RBW] Cheviot setup - chain length, front derailer

2020-02-29 Thread Jay Lonner
I'm making slow progress on a 55cm Cheviot build for my wife and am hung up
on determining the proper chain length. The Riv website says:

>The chain is the right length when it pulls the derailer cage free of and
parallel to the chain itself when wrapped around the smallest cog and the
smallest chainring -- i.e., the derailer cage will be flexed slightly.

Try as I might, I'm having a hard time visualizing what this means - can
anyone unpack this further for me? A picture would be even better! (The
there's also Sheldon's rule of thumb calling for one full link of overlap
when the chain is wound around the large-large chainring/sprocket combo,
but I'd still like to understand the Riv method).

I'm also a a little stuck on front derailer options. I'm setting this up
with the Silver wide-low double (38x24 with chainguard) and the front
derailers I have on hand (IRD Alpina-f, Suntour XC-9000) both have a lot of
daylight between the bottom of the cage and the chainguard. It looks funny,
but would it affect performance? I'm open to buying a new part if needed,
but am getting a bit Marie Kondo and would rather declutter my parts stash
than add to it.

Thanks,

Jay Lonner

[RBW] Cheviot limits

2019-11-04 Thread Dorothy C
Which size Cheviot? I have the 55cm, with SKS fenders and Panaracer Pasela 650b
1.75 which work. Tektro R559 brakes. At first I bought some 50mm Conti
basketball tires, and I could fit the rear fender on top of the brake arms with
some trimming on the fender sides, but the front fender was definitely a no go,
especially with a front Mark’s rack.

Someone more knowledgeable can probably weigh in, but I don’t think you can fit
centerpulls because of the brake cable routing.

[RBW] Cheviot limits

2019-11-04 Thread Joe Bernard
I had Fatty Rumpkins labeled 41.5 on a Chev with SKS fenders. In my opinion
that's the practical limit before you start squeezing stuff down too much,
Cheviot is not a 'lots of tire and fender' bike like the canti models.

[RBW] Cheviot limits

2019-11-04 Thread Jay Lonner
Over the weekend I took advantage of Riv's Halloween promotion and ordered
up a Cheviot for my wife. Right now she's riding an undersized Salsa
Casseroll with Panaracer Pasela 32s, and I'd like to provide her with a
plusher ride similar to my Hunq wth Big Bens (she prefers a step-through
frame though, so a Hunq is out). We live in the PNW so fenders are
non-negotiable. When I talked to the nice man at Riv over the weekend he
suggested something no wider than a 40, but that seems a little
conservative to me. I'd be curious to know what tires other Cheviot riders
are using. Could I make a Little Big Ben work without too much hassle? On a
related note, any thoughts on what brakes provide the most clearance? I'd
like to use the Paul centerpulls, but are the Dia-Compes going to do a
better job of accommodating fenders and a fattish tire?

Thanks,

Jay Lonner

[RBW] Cheviot Wool Sweater Preorder - Anyone In?

2019-09-15 Thread SeanMac
Howdy,

Grant wrote about this a few blahgs ago. I am intrigued, but a bit
hesitant to put down $120 without having some idea of the style of the
sweater that is being produced. At the same time, I love the color, and
the concept. I also remember that Grant did a collection of wool sweaters
a few years ago that I skipped, but in hindsight wish I had purchased.

Anyway, here is a link to the sweater: Cheviot Wool Sweater Preorder

If you have placed your order I would love to know your reasoning for doing
so.

If any of you remember the previous wool sweaters that Riv. produced, do
you recall if that was done on a pre-order basis as well? I'm curious what
might happen to the price of this sweater after the pre-order period has
ended.

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts.

[RBW] Cheviot 60cm for sale - $2,500 + shipping

2019-08-20 Thread René Sterental
Hello again!

Life has happened and with it, a serious health wake-up call, which has set
me again on the bike stable reduction path, among other reductions.

I have decided to put my wonderful Cheviot 60cm for sale, hoping that a
miracle will happen and someone wanting to get one just like it, will
pop-up in the SF Bay Area (ideally), or else I'll ship it. If no one
appears, I'll then do the usual disassembly and offer the frame and parts
separately. I put too much love into it, so would rather have someone enjoy
it as is, instead of all parted. But it will be what it is meant to be.

At this time, the bike is assembled with:
- Standard BB and headset as assembled in RBW.
- Sugino double (plus chain) guard crankset
- Vault platform pedals (chrome)
- 9 speed XT cassette
- 9 speed downtube shifters mounted on the stem with the adapter RBW
sells/sold.
- Sun XCD rear derailer 8,9 & 10 speed compatible
- Sun XCD front derailer
- Paul Racer F/R brakes chrome
- Paul Cantilever brake levers chrome
- Nitto Mark front rack
- Nitto Big Back Rack Medium
- King Iris cage
- Edelux II dynamo light
- Front SON dynamo hub (For Peter White) laced to a chrome 36 hole Velocity
Atlas rim
- Rear White Industries MI5 hub laced to a chrome 36 hole Velocity Atlas rim
- Nitto Choco bar and stem
- Brooks leather grips
- Compass Snoqualmie 700x44 tires
- Honjo smooth fenders
- Nitto lugged S84 setback seat post
- Brooks B17 Select saddle or B67 Select sprung saddle

Photos available here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/albums/72157674336110365

Everything is in perfect condition. Asking for $2,500 + shipping
separately. If shipping, I'll have the bike packed at my LBS, which would
add around $50-100 for their packing. Shipping to CONUSA via Bike Flights
should be another $100 or so.

With a heavy heart,

René

Re: [RBW] Cheviot and Bike Rack

2018-06-22 Thread Dan McNamara
You might take a look at this hitch adapter:

http://www.hitchsource.com/torklift-ecohitch-hidden-mini-cooper-hardtop-door-2015-14-in-receiver-p-36883.html

It is a bolt in so there should not need to be any fabrication. It is a
little strange having the hitch right above the exhausts but if there is
available space then why not.

Here is an over-dramatic video of the install: https://vimeo.com/145407793

A body shop could do this install pretty easily.

It sounds like you need someone to install a hitch mount, then you can get a

[RBW] Cheviot and Bike Rack

2018-06-22 Thread Deborah Coffin
I’m the happy owner of a new 50cm Cheviot, and am struggling to figure out how
to safely transport it on my Mini Cooper. I have what I think is the only bike
rack that works on my car—a Saris Bones. Apparently, unless it comes built for
a hitch, Mini’s can’t be fitted with anything else.

I’ve been mounting my bike between the top tune and behind the seat tube, then
I turn the front wheel backwards so it doesn’t stick out too much. Right now I
have no fenders or racks, but I’d like to get both, eventually, but wonder if
that will make turning the front wheel impossible. The other issue is that the
stays on the rack hit the bike at an odd angle, scratching and/or marking up
the frame.

I tried one of the bars that connect between the seat post and stem, but then
the back wheel extends really far beyond the car.

It’s the only sorrow I’ve had as a new owner, cause I’d like to take my bike
with me across the country this summer. I took off the rear wheel to get it
home when I bought it, but that’s sort of a pain.

Beyond removing the wheels, or mounting it as I have been—or getting a
different car—has anyone a better idea? Suggestions? Solutions?

Re: [RBW] Cheviot fat tires

2018-05-02 Thread lconley
What I have confirmed on several Rivendells, when fitting the largest tires
that aren't supposed to fit, is that the Tektro R559s are the limiting
factor on the front. Weinmann / Dia-Comp / Gran-Compe centerpulls will
clear much better (assume this applies to Paul centerpuls also). The other
problem with the Tektros is that they drag on the tire when the quick
releases are open.

Any centerpull brake will have improved clearance over your sidepull. Paul
Racers are wonderful, but Dia-Compe/Weinmann centerpulls also work fine
(with good brake pads, like Kool Stops) and are much cheaper.

Have fun on your fatter tires!

Direct dimensional comparison with my Sam wouldn't be too useful to you
since it's a 700C fork and of course a different frame, but one thing
that's true of my bike might be true of yours: The tire clearances are
pretty different front and rear. In my case there's a good deal more room
in back. If you're lucky, maybe the tire thats whacking you hardest on
bumps is also the one you can size up farther.

That's a lovely bicycle. I just bought and built an RBW Blue Cheviot which may

I've always had a soft spot for the original orange with blue cutouts; the blue
tape on the bars is a nice compliment to it. Great job on the build..enjoy!

Never built a bike from the frame up before but it turned out great! First
ride was two days ago and it was a dream! 26 miles, 1,800 feet of elevation
and would have been great to go longer

I have envied Rivendell bikes for a decade after trying to emulate them
with my Jamis Coda with Albatross bars. But several weeks ago my friend
gave me his old Cheviot frame (he got another) to build up and use as my
own (though he gets to ride it when he travels here to Napa or the Bay
Area). In part this was to distract me from the worries around a possible
adoption that we completed almost three weeks ago.

Here's my build list:
Component Price
DONATED Cheviot / Cheviut frame - orange
Tektro R559 Long Reach Road Calipers 55-73mm Silver Set $45.00

Shimano Alivio HG400 9 Speed Cassette - CS-HG400-9 (11-36)

$32.38
KMC X9.93 9-Speed Chain (2x)
 $25.98
Yokozuna Shift Cable Housing Gray, 4' + 4 Ferrules plus extra length of
cable

$7.25
Yokozuna Brake Cable Housing, Gray, 4' + 4 Ferrules

$7.25
Rear Wheel 700c 36h Shimano Lx / Mavic A319 / Dt Champion silver

$107.81
Front wheel - donated Velocity Atlas / Shimano Deore XT
MKS Sylvan Prime Touring Pedals 9/16

$18.33
Velo Orange Chrome Half Clips, Pair

$13.92
Wald 137 basket

$15.95
Rear 135mm skewer - riv $10.00
Cinelli Cork Gel Handlebar tape - craigslist $8.00
Clear gorilla tape - replacing protective bits $3.26
Random brass bell from China, same as Riv's
 $3.00
SKS Longboard fenders - black - scrap
Albatross wide steel handlebars - scrap

Ergon GC1 grips for sweptback bars - scrap

Iris King waterbottle cage - donated
Total $531.93
Would have been a little over $2,100 adding the cost of the donated or
scrap parts.

Along the way I:

   - Forgot to bend the front fender attachment which confused me for a
while until I watched the Rivendell install video.
   - Double wrapped the front of the Albatross bars with gel cork tape for
a thick, easy grip. Used Rock n Roll Gold to lube the chain because another
friend donated half a bottle to the cause.
   - Learned a lot because I've never worked with caliper brakes before,
never removed/installed a bottom bracket before (turned out to be
   unnecessary here),
   - Painted a dozen or two chips/dings with testor's model paint because
it was cheaper than nail polish

   - Used an electrical wire twist connector cut in half to adjust the rear
   fender attachment (conveniently also orange).
   - Had a GREAT time happily distracting myself from the anxiety of the
adoption process. We expected to travel to be there for the baby's birth in
another state around 3/13, but we ended up leaving 10 days early so I
finished the bike a couple weeks after we came home ... the only things
left were the chain(s since you need two!), the bar tape, and fenders plus
   adjustments.

[RBW] CHEVIOT For Me

2017-12-08 Thread Howard Ramsay

This is the bike I plan to build from Rivendell. The step through design
will aid me when I am no longer able to comfortably ride my classic
BRIDGESTONE bikes and my Harley. My pelvis is (actually) bolted together,
and swinging my leg over the top tube will become harder as the years
progress. Quality bikes are more expensive year to year, so purchasing now
makes financial sense. I will ask for a few custom touches, have the bike
assembled, tested, then shipped to me in Longview, Texas. I like the RBW
Blue, the frame style is classic and very well made. The lugs are lovely,
the fork is fantastic, the brakes are basic, and the braze-ons are
bountiful. Accessorizing this build will include fenders, racks, lighting,
a basket, a bell, and a kickstand. I have been researching the build parts
this weekend. Rivendell has parts o'plenty to pick from, with a Chevoit -
2017 Pre-Sale, web specials, coupon codes, Rivendollars, and a LET'S HELP
CHARLIE CUNNINGHAM two for one credit from Grant Petersen. More info here:
My community is improving intersection lighting, creating bike paths along
existing walking trails, and dedicated bike lanes on new roadways. The
local bike shop has a regular group of cyclists who come together for easy
rides. Each spring they set up a training program for new riders, building
up skills and strength, promoting esprit de corps, and helping to prevent
injuries. Some guys and gals compete in local area races of different types
and competition levels. There is a large number of teens riding single
track and gravel grinding, with great support from the local communities.
Most all these people ride new style bikes, carbon and aluminium frames,
multi-suspension mountain bikes, etc. Not my style, but at least they are
riding. I am blessed to live here. ♥ More to come as the parts are
selected and the frame arrives. Howard Ramsay - Longview, TX

I didn't get the "grow" comment, either, but I don't think it was a fat joke.
You look fabulous, and those are killer boots!

Did I grow? I looked for the meaning in this but all I can come up with is
“Wait a minute, is he making a fat joke?” I’ll keep the boots close. Scary
times, I tell you. And you best get Riv to make you some mounts. I’ll find you
some appropriate boots! We got this covered.

Re: [RBW] Cheviot dreaming

2017-11-07 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
The tires in this photos are Clement Xplor 40s, I've had Compass 38s, which
will also permit fenders easily, and right now it has 42 Somas. With
releases at the cable hanger and also at the lever, no need to deflate even
the biggest tires. I really like the vintage Dia Compe/Weinmann, and I find
that even the 750 gives plenty of well-modulated stopping power. I think
that is the 610, which I
switched to a Weinmann 750 because it just barely reached, and as pads wear
on the cps, they go up...

In any event, I guess cantis could be a nice option, as well as the two
water bottle mounts, but for most users I think the way it was spec'd is
right on.

On my 55 Cheviot, I don't think cantilever brakes would add much tire
clearance. I'm able to fit Compass 38mm tires under VO fenders, just
barely. The front brake is problematic, but in the end I don't think
removing it would create more than a couple extra mm.

Mark in Beacon -

AFAIK, the prime motivator for canti brakes vs long-reach sidepulls is
fender clearance (ameliorated by switching to long-reach centerpulls, as
you suggest.
An additional motivator would be better brake feel due to the long, flexy
arms of long-reach sidepulls or DC centerpulls (ameliorated by using
non-flexy centerpulls like Paul or Compass).
Another additional motivator would be the ease of removing a wheel from
open cantilevers (super easy), compared to open sidepull/centerpull brakes
(may need to deflate tire).

Eh, it's not a thing for me. I only use one bottle at a time, and usually carry

Re: [RBW] Cheviot dreaming

2017-11-07 Thread Leah Peterson

But Mark, you don’t understand. The dream Cheviot HAS to have two bottle mounts
because the Dream Cheviot is the world’s most over-prepared bike. At least
according to The Book of Leah, it is. The bike would have dyno lighting and the
heaviest-duty racks and giant Wald baskets and Sackville bags everywhere. Also,
the Dream Cheviot would go perfectly with my red End of the World Boots - the
boots I would grab if everything was falling apart. You know, like in The
Walking Dead. Two bottle mounts would be mandatory if I had to outride the
zombies. You can’t just have the Two-Fish thing jiggling around on the frame
like that, no sir.

Re: [RBW] Cheviot dreaming

2017-11-07 Thread Joe Bernard
As long as it fits my 650b x 41 Fatty Rumpkins I'm happy. It may be a tad snug
with fenders, but I'm thinking of running roadie-style clip-on/pop-off
mudguards anyway 'cause it's dry here most of the year. Also, I'm not a big fan
of adding brake stresses to a frame in areas it wasn't designed for. Grant
designed this with road calipers and I like the long-reach Tektros he sells.

Hey Mark, your friend's Cheviot is my size. You gotta test it to make sure I'll
like it! ;-)

Re: [RBW] Cheviot dreaming

2017-11-07 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
How much more tire would that get you, front and rear? The specs say it can
take a 650B/45 or a 700c/50. That is a ton o' tire. If you really need
more, brake reach is listed as 65 (Tektro 559?), but if you went with Dia
Compe 750 centerpulls, would that get you more height (which I assume is
the limiting factor here?)

Also, complaints about only one water bottle mount on the Cheviots are
popular. I have lots of bikes with none. Most of my rides I only need one
bottle, so I have some version of a clamped on holder. If I figure I will
be out all of a summer's day, I sometimes supplement with the twofish
bottle thing. Not the most elegant, but for occasional use it works just
fine. Or if all your riding is 40+ miles, you could use a clamped cage. The
Zefal vintage cages are pretty. I'm about to install one on my dress-up
bike. Or go super duper old school retro and get a handlebar mounted cage.
Fun! Or ride with a domestique or two. It's up to you.

BTW, tip of the hat to Joe B for alerting me to the Harris Cheviot. I in
turn told my friend, and she bought it then hopped in the car and drove
three hours to pick it up. I'll be seeing it and helping her get fitted
this Friday. Looking forward to it. Of course I will need to take a bit of
a test ride!

Joe,
This will be a cool bike. As long as you're getting the custom paint, did
you consider have canti posts added? That's the one thing I wish my Cheviot
had but doesn't. The frame has generous clearance, but tire size is limited
by the brake calipers. (It's certainly easier to spend your money than my

Joe,
I love my Cheviot. For the type of riding I enjoy, it is my favorite of the
Rivs I've owned or own (Atlantis, Romulus, Road Standard). It is almost the
perfect bike. One more set of water bottle cage braze-ons and it is perfect!

It will look stunning in red; can't wait to see photos.

It's going to be just gorgeous with the cream contrasts, and is sort of my shot

I just got this email from Riv. New frames going for $1000 today; up $100 a day
til they're at full price Monday. Yes I have a perfectly wonderful Clem L, but
I couldn't resist that price on a Roadini Blue Chev. Fortunately all my Clem
stuff will transfer, so prepare for a Clem L frame for sale in a couple months!
Check the site right now don't wait hurry go.

Re: [RBW] Cheviot touring?

2017-02-24 Thread Ray Varella
Bob,
I think Riv is pretty conservative in how they rate their bikes.
I don't have a Cheviut but I recently got one of their Roscoe Mixte frames.
>From my initial experiences with it, I would not hesitate to load it up for a
>tour.
I'm certain it could handle full size panniers plus a saddle bag on the rear
and some sort of front load as well.
How much stuff would you take?
It might not be the best bike to go unsupported across the Sahara but I don't
want to do that on any bike.

I'm sure people have done far more with much less than your bike can handle.

[RBW] Cheviot touring?

2017-02-24 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I was daydreaming the other day, an amazingly glorious day for the midwest
in February, riding my Cheviot. I could not help but smile as riding along
was the most fun and peaceful thing I had done in awhile. The idea that
the world would be a much better and happier place if people rode their
bikes more and drove their cars less seemed pretty obvious.

Anyway, part of my daydream, sounding outlandish now but not so much then,
was wondering what it would be like to go on a real tour on the Cheviot. I
searched CGOAB but no journals or reports found. I also cannot remember
anyone here telling many stories of Cheviot touring or longer distance
travels though I certainly could have missed things.

So, just because... Can anyone point me to stories, journals, pictures,
etc. of people touring on a Cheviot or similar bike? Clem L's
(Clementines) would certainly be in there, and other mixte type of frames.
It would be interesting to hear of such things, noting either the big
smiles or the wide, possibly concerned, eyes of the riders...

Thanks!

Bob Lovejoy
Galesburg, IL

P.S. I do realize the Cheviot (specifically) does not have the same load
carrying capacity as, say, a Hillborne, Appaloosa, or certainly a
Hunqapillar. Still, reality must be put aside at times, if just for
awhile. Can be a long while though...

[RBW] Cheviot - Center Pulls?

2016-12-11 Thread MartyG
Do the new Cheviots allow rear center pull brakes? (cable stop on top of
the diagatube) I've seen pics both ways, but not sure if the new ones have
moved the bosses. Not a show-stopper, just curious as I contemplate a
build.

Re: [RBW] Cheviot build in progress

2016-10-28 Thread René Sterental
Different brakes would be needed, but I concur, even in bikes with
braze-ons for cantilever brakes, the touch points are not equidistant. It
would also help tremendously to have the braze-on to be able to screw in
the daruma for the front fender directly, instead of having to hang it from
the brake/rack attachment.

[RBW] Cheviot build in progress

2016-10-26 Thread Ted Durant
I have started the construction process on my Cheviot. Frame is a 55, so 650B
wheels. Saddle height is 72cm. Color is gray. Details so far … old BoB Brooks
B17 saddle, Albatross bars on a Tallux 11cm stem (thanks Hugh S!), Deore rear
hub and Schmidt front dyno hub laced to Synergy rims. Compass Babyshoe Pass 42
tires are measuring 38.5mm so far, Mark’s rack on the front with a short Edelux
light mount and Edelux light, VO Zepplin Noir fenders, XD2 crank with 42/30
chainrings and a chainring protector, 12-32 8 speed cassette. Front fender fit
required an extra spacer on the daruma bolt, as there is a fair amount of brake
interference. It will be fine when the cables are installed. Rear fender fit is
going to be a challenge. Why, for the love of all that is good and holy, can’t
RBW place bridges equal distance from the axle? Three bridges on the rear of
the Cheviot, and all three are wildly different placements.

[RBW] Cheviot (or Sam)

2016-08-09 Thread Madam Xylene
I love my cheviot! Great for carrying lots of stuff and enjoy being upright
while cruising in traffic. Get over the girl bike thing. I even commute up 1800
ft elevation on it, not the best for uphill but is a blast rolling down steep
hills and enjoying view of Golden Gate Bridge. Have also done Mt.Diablo except
last pitch on it. Bike is very stable but it is longer and heavier than my
other bikes. As a scrawny but tallish 66 yr old female I can manage it into my
house and BART elevators. Another bonus, if you have a hip muscle or tendon
issue the step through feature will be most appreciated.

[RBW] Cheviot (or Sam)

2016-08-09 Thread Joe Bernard
I still have some residual issues with mixtes being perceived as "girl bikes",
but I don't see it in the Cheviot. The toptube has more of a
downslope-like-a-mountain-bike look than a true mixte. If it rides anything
like my Appaloosa - which I think it's comparable to - then you should get one.
I rode my Joe at RBW once, then went back a few days later for another, then
went back a couple days after that to buy it. I loved the blue with
green-wrapped Noodles, and knew that color was going away. If you dig that
Chev, buy it!

[RBW] Cheviot (or Sam)

2016-08-09 Thread Clayton.sf
I have 3 other amazing bicycles, but the Cheviot is what I ride the most. Not
that I would do a fast 200k on it or take it mountainbiking (I rides single
track well enough though) but for most rides it is an amazing bike. Tends to
put you in a different frame of mind. A very practical bike! I wrote a review
of mine somewhere here. Do a search.

Re: [RBW] Cheviot (or Sam)

2016-08-09 Thread Dan McNamara
Hi Sean,

I have a Cheviot and have owned a Sam in the past.

The Chev is set up with Albastache bars and a short stem. The Cheviot does ride
differently that the Sam probably due to the longer chain stays. The Chev is a
55 so 650B which might contributed of the difference as well. Both bikes were
extremely stable and easy to ride.

I never give the fact that the frame is Mixte-style a thought - It is really
not that low. The bike is setup with front + rear racks and Rock n' Road tires
and looks purposeful. It is a bike for hauling stuff and bike camping
excursions.

The Chev is one of the first batch is orange and I am not sure what has changed
since but I wish it had a second set of bosses for a bottle cage. I can make up
for it by tucking bottles into a bag but it would be nice to have another spot
on the frame.

All-in-all a great bike.

[RBW] Cheviot (or Sam)

2016-08-09 Thread SeanMac
Hi folks,

I had the opportunity to spend a few hours at Riv HQ a few Saturday's ago.
I had a wonderful time - I rode four bikes (Clem, Cheviot, Sam and
Hubbuhubbah), and walked away with a medium saddlesack bag. Still smile
when I think about the fun I had. Most of my riding (about an hour) was
done on the Clem. I enjoyed the ride, but it did not really speak to me.
Perhaps it was just too different from the bikes that I typically ride.
Strangely enough, the bike that emerged as my favorite was the Cheviot. I
can't seem to get it out of my head. In fact, ever since I returned home,
I have been trying to figure out if I loved the Chev enough to purchase one
before they go away. Here is my situation.

About ten years ago I had a custom-built Bob Brown Cycle made for me. I
nearly bought a Rambouillet, but chose Bob Brown instead. It was my
poor-man's red convertible that I got for my 40th birthday. That bike
complimented my circa 1990 Trek 520 quite well. My Bob Brown was
quick-ish, sporty and fun to ride. However, as the years went by, I found
it to be increasingly uncomfortable for longer ride. Two years ago I
bought a Black Mountain Road bike. This bike has a bit more relaxed
geometry. I really love this bike - it is much more comfortable than Bob
Brown, and has become the bike that I grab most often. In fact, Bob Brown
typically sees the road only once or twice a year - it is typically the
bike that I use on my indoor trainer. My Trek 520 has been turned into a
grocery-getter. However, it does not bring me a great deal of joy to ride,
but it gets the job done.

In my mind, I see the Cheviot as a replacement for my Trek 520. Nearly all
of the components that I have on the Trek would easily transfer to the Chev
- meaning that my initial output of cash would be only for the frame.

I've read through everything that I can find on the list about the
Cheviot. I would love to hear impressions from those who have had the bike
long term. Likes? Dislikes? Dealing with the "guy on a girl's bike"
thing is perhaps an issue. However, as I approach 50 I see the benefit of
the lower top tube. Besides, when I rode the Cheviot in Walnut Creek, I
did not even think about the fact that I was riding a mixte, as I was
simply enjoying the ride.

I live in a small town in western New York - with short rides (mile or two)
to the co-op grocery store, library, post office, etc. This is the type of
riding, along with occasional paved and/or gravel path riding) that I see
myself doing with a Cheviot. What do you think -- good choice in bikes?

What about a Sam? I rode a Sam the other day as well, but it was set up
with Noodle bars, and rode much more like a typical road bike. If I set it
up with Albatross bars, bags, etc how would it likely compare with the
Cheviot? Would it ride the same and put the same smile on my face without
causing me and/or those seeing me question my manliness?

Any insight on these issues would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Sean

Re: [RBW] CHEVIOT OWNERS WITH R559 SIDE PULLS..WHAT TIRES???

2016-07-14 Thread Jeremy Till
Probably down to differences in rim width and how close to the rim people
run their brake pads. On a sidepull caliper, how far the pads are apart
when the QR is opened is limited by how far they are apart when it is
closed. If you have narrow rims and like to run your pads close to the rim
for quicker brake response, I could see that your brake would open
significantly less than someone who ran wider rims and didn't mind a bit
more lever travel before their brakes engaged.

[RBW] Cheviot sizing help

2016-03-13 Thread gentlemanmark
I am hoping to buy a Cheviot this summer when the new bikes arrive.
My problem is getting the right size.
According to the Riv website, I should get a 60.
pbh 85.5 / 5' 10.5 ht. A liitle heavy.
However, I keep reading how "huge the 60 cm is.
I live way too far from Walnut Creek or any other Riv dealer to test ride.
Some say going bigger is better, safer since its a step thru.
Others say they have been really glad they went 55 instead of 60.
Now if you have always rode 650B...most 700's seem huge.
I have always ridden 700 wheels
The other factor is:
I like the Nitto Bosco bar, as I only ride upright.
Dont race but like to get up and running along on the road for exercise and
enjoyment cruising.
Is it perhaps the hugeness of the 58 Bosco that makes the bike seem bigger
than really is?
Whats the best size then to get?
Can you order all 3 and then send 2 back?
Just your observation or experience/ opinion and if you are a dwarf, and
all bikes seen huge, no offense intended.
This is serious, as at my age and health, it will likely be my last
bicycle,

Kindly, GM

Re: [RBW] Cheviot in betweener opinions?

2016-03-05 Thread Dan McNamara
I have a 55 Cheviot - 5' 9" and 84.5 pbh. I test rode the 55 and the 60 at RBW.

The 60 did feel huge. I am pretty happy with the 55 set up with Albastache bars
and a 7cm stem but Albatross bars and a slightly longer stem would be good as
well. I prefer the slightly more aggressive riding position with the Albastache
and road brakes levers over more sweep / rise and MTN levers with the Albas.

The Bosco bars are pretty wide and add the the "huge" factor on the 60. But
still - it is a big frame.

My wife was in between sizes on the Betty Foy. We went with the smaller option
and she has been really happy with the bike.

[RBW] Cheviot in betweener opinions?

2016-03-04 Thread Philip Kim
Before i sold my chev to size down, I was in between sizes 50 and 55, I sized
down and glad I did.

I would wait. Also, I know Gravel and Grind had a Chev hanging at the shop,
looked like a 55cm orange, but couldn't get a close look.

[RBW] Cheviot in betweener opinions?

2016-03-04 Thread Christopher Murray
>From the sound of it they would both probably be fine. Maybe Riv would switch
>the bars on the 60 for a ride if they knew 100% there would be a sale? What
>about a staff bike-- I think Grant has a 60 Cheviot but not sure what bars are

At the end of the day, I'd let her choose. If that means waiting so be it. In
sales training we always learn to let the customer make the final decision-
they are much more likely to be happy with the purchase.

Good luck!
Chris
