[RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-10-17 Thread Surlyprof
I love how much great feedback we receive from this group. Those POC
helmets are really nice. I saw someone had one on the train and it was a
great design. I also liked the Bell Zepher and Giro Aspect helmets, too.
Almost pulled the trigger on one of those but, alas, going from free to
$150-300 was a little hard for me to grasp this time around (and, I
probably would have needed to wear it when letting my wife know how much it
cost). Bell's designs are very nice but looked huge on me. Giro, as
usual, were a nice comfortable fit. As Will said, they often go on sale.
One of my favorite helmets in the past was a Giro Hex. Tried them this
time and ended up going with a Giro Xar in hi-vis yellow/green. Typical
basic zoomy-looking helmet but it was very comfortable and under $50 on
sale. Guess I'll have another 5-10 years to work up to a POC or Zepher. I
also like supporting Bell and Giro since several of my past students design
for them (Specialized, too).

Also, I tried washing that grungy Specialized in the dishwasher. Still
pretty grungy but I think the dirt and grime is now sanitized. Keeping it
around as a loaner and back up.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone.
John

2016-10-16 Thread Max
The advice given by someone earlier regarding smooth helmets is a good one
– the fewer protrusions to snag on the ground in event of a fall, the
better. Pay attention also to the back of the helmet in particular, as a
would-be head injury is mitigated, it can turn into a neck injury if the
back of the helmet snags... So, even the Giro Synthe – smooth everywhere
except the back.

Some folks I know say that Kask Protone (this
)

is the most comfortable helmet they've tried... Maybe if it goes on sale
it'll be a bit less comfortable, but there it is. :-)

[RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-10-15 Thread Chris Halasz
A function I like not mentioned much here is for a helmet that does not make
the hair on your head too strange after its removal.

The three bands of styrofoam with thin foam padding that run from forehead to
crown, common on many large vent racer type helmets, make my hair look really
strange really quickly.

The Giro Sutton distorts my hair the least of many models I've tried.

It also provides plenty of protection from the sun.

I use the Sutton year-round in Tucson.

Cheers,

Chris

[RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-21 Thread John Stowe
Since I don't see it mentioned above: I have been happy with my Giro Sutton
MIPS. Fits my large/long head (61cm) just fine, doesn't look like a
spaceship, soft visor, pretty light, good coverage in the back and a
complete hard shell means no exposed foam when hanging from a bag and
bumping into walls/train seats/etc. I managed to snag one off of Sierra
Trading Post at the end of last year for cheap, less than half price. I
don't know how much the MIPS accomplishes, but like others said: it might
help, certainly won't hurt, and doesn't cost much, so why not.

I also have a Giro Atmos hanging in the shed, rarely used unless I know I'm
going on a long hot ride and want the ventilation. It's a crash replacement
for a previous Atmos I was wearing when I got knocked down by a U-turning
taxi (DC riders: yes, I was in the Penn Ave. bike lane). I didn't hit my
head very hard, but enough to dent the foam and separate the shell. Riv
content: the insurance payout funded my Sam! So I guess getting hit turned
out to be good for my cycling life, in the end...

Re: [RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-17 Thread Mark R.
I lurk and seldom post here, but there is some interesting content and I would
like to weigh in. I use Bell helmets, for some reason they fit my head best.

In 2002 I was in a bike lane @ about 18 to 20 mph, and there was a six foot
wide by six foot deep ditch the width of the lane. The crew fixing the pipes
underground failed to put a steel plate over it. The woman in front of me
(about 50 yards) crashed, broke her ribs, arm, collarbone, punctured her lung
and it collapsed. Her head was fine. Due to her helmet.

My front wheel went into goes into the ditch. It was an abyss and my bike
disappears. I have over 40 years experience in the martial arts, with lots of
training in taking falls. I rolled, instinctively , broke fall , stood, the
pain that ripped through my body was so intense I fell to the ground. Another
rider pulled me to the side of the bike lane and got my bike. He thought my
roll was cool (LOL), my fork was bent, downtube bent, wheel was true. Riv
content: I was on my Lemond that day, Riv was spared.
My helmet looked ok, the plastic was lightly cracked. The foam inside had deep
cracks. And it was a glancing blow from my roll.

Moral of the story: even with all my training for falls, more than most humans
on Earth, I am glad I was wearing my helmet.
I rode the bent bike home (steel rules).

2016-09-17 Thread LLM
I recently bought a Bontrager Starvos MIPS helmet from my LBS along with an
optional visor insert (attempting to reaffirm my loyalty after buying a
bike and lots of gear from Riv!). The helmet is comfortable, seems
well-enough ventilated and has grooves along its surface that help hold my
Safe Zone helmet mirror in position. I chose safety yellow with reflective
black accents. I do most of my riding in city traffic and frequently after
dark, so the extra visibility is a plus. Price point was just under $100.

Re: [RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-14 Thread Scott Henry
My problem with helmets is that I have a w-i-d-e head. I measure out to 7
1/2 or 7 3/4 for a ball cap, so I guess big and wide, not a good combo. I
feel sorry for Mom, I guess Dad too.

Helmets tend to fit but push into the sides of my head and end up giving
headaches. So rarely do I wear them. When required at events I usually
end up in a hairnet. Most organizers don't specify the TYPE of helmet
that is required, only that a helmet must be worn.

I don't have the actual name of the helmet, but I did find one of the Bell
helmets that fit comfortably. To bad it was the race helmet with the
integrated faceshield, I looked like one of the Spaceballs guys.

get used to a rear view mirror sticking off the end of my helmet.)

However, a problem with the helmet, at least for my head: when riding at
speed (say down a long descent), the back of my head, near the ears, begins
to hurt. I think this is caused by wind getting under the visor and thus
shifting the helmet ever so slightly on my head, but I can't be sure. Which
makes me want to take the visor off. But then I loose my mirror. (I have
tried the mirror on glasses and don't like it nearly as much as helmet
mounted.)

Does anyone else have this problem with their helmet?

2016-09-14 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I have a Giro Aspect and Giro Reverb - the former looks to have an
exorbitant list price of $175 but I'm positive I didn't pay that much, my
recollection is that my price was similar to the price of the Reverb, which
was $60.

I like these helmets because they don't have a super-racy profile, they fit
my medium-large head nicely, and they have a detachable soft brim that
looks like you have a short brim cycling cap on underneath. I can't wear
those caps for most of the year - too hot, but I appreciate the brim for
the bit of shade it gives my eyes. The Reverb is ventilated, but not too
much, so it's more of my winter helmet now, while the Aspect has a bit more
ventilation.

[RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-14 Thread John
My POC Octal AVIP MIPS helmet is the best ventilated helmet I've tried so
far, that I really, really like.

Deacon is not wrong, helmets won't stop the contrecoup brain injuries.

But I would rather hit my head on a car or the road or a rock, or whatever,
with a helmet on my head than to hit something without one.

I'm hoping the MIPS feature in my POC Octal AVIP MIPS helmet will provide
some additional protection in a collision, and I hope the orange color
helps make me more visible on the road.

If wearing a helmet does in fact cause some riders to ride more recklessly,
well then, there's no helping some people. I know I don't ride around
blowing through stoplights just because I'm wearing my helmet.

My wife treats people with traumatic brain injuries, and she says if you
did what she does, you wouldn't ride without one. But I'm sure she herself
is somewhat traumatized by seeing her patients.

Just my $0.02,

John

Somehow I managed to flip over, land on my back and slide down the hillside to
a smooth stop. Would have been injury free had I not hit a tree with my hip at

Still getting a new helmet, though!

There was a huge article (many pages long) in Bicycling (ya, I know) that was
the most in depth article I've seen about MIPS and gave a lot of the data
gathered by the organization that has done the bulk of testing. MIPS is an
attempt at a safety movement, not a marketing movement. I think it's amazing
that most MIPS helmets are only $20 more than regular helmets.

There are a number of articles of an objective nature online about MIPS if you
care to do your own research and reach a conclusion.

[RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-13 Thread Deacon Patrick
I think we're talking at cross purposes, Ron. I'll try again, using your
crash as an example. Road rash is a vastly different thing than brain
injury. Your momentum was dissipated by the relatively slow deceleration of
the skid on the road, not by the helmet or the gloves. My point is this:
had you instead stopped very rapidly (as in hitting a car or tree), the
helmet would not have prevented the coup countrecoup of your brain slamming
back and forth inside your skull due to rapid deceleration. It can't. You
are spot on that helmets are good at preventing cuts and abrasions. Thus,
the conversation about brain injury and helmets and the emotional "do you
love your brain?" attempt at manipulating people into wearing a helmet as
if it will protect against the primary cause of brain injury in a bike
crash (coup contrecoup) is disingenuous and gives a false sense of safety.

With abandon,
Patrick

What Ron Mc said, also based on dramatic personal experience, including a
helmet smashed at speed, and a head that felt pretty darn good.

Un-Rivvy/Bobby, but my preferred helmet is a Specialized S-Works. The only
helmet I've ever owned that disappears once it's put on, and it will soon
be replaced with same. I also embrace lycra, so there you have it.

Without letting your fingers slip on your skin, move your scalp around. I
can move mine at least a couple of centimeters, in all directions. Your
scalp is a MIPS. It even uses lube (blood and interstitial fluid). The

I've come to like the Bern Allston helmet a lot. It has a harder shell
than most and a visor without weighing more than a roadie helmet. One
thing I heard mentioned in a discussion about MIPS systems, one person
noted that any helmet will slide on the head and thus provide some
rotational protection. Obviously, it't not as predictable as a built in
feature, but it's something I hadn't thought of before.

I have a Giro Reverb that doesn't look like it came off a Power
Rangers studio set. It's round, moderately comfortable and has good
ventilation. Other than the vent slots not being quite big enough to
get a finger through for scalp scratching, it's pretty much the Moe
Howard helmet. When I was commuting about 6 miles each way I'd put
tape over the front and top vents to keep my forehead from freezing
during the winter.

http://www.giro.com/us_en/products/men/helmets/urban/reverb.html

It looks like they also have a helmet called the Sutton that may be
more your style. It's tiny vent holes would leave me overheating in
all but the most frigid conditions.

2016-09-11 Thread Will
I use an equestrian helmet. They are good looking, have a small visor
(about an inch) so rain is deflected, and are built to stronger standards
(horses are higher from the ground and have hooves) than typical bicycle
stock. The trick is to find one large enough, the horsey set tends to be
female, and one with good ventilation. My current helmet is a large Troxel
school model (cost = $35 and built like a tank). My next will be a L/XL
Ovation Protege (cost = $45). I'll get the Ovation b/c the ventilation is
better and the interior suspension is more tunable. In either brand, the
liner removes for washing. Removeable liners are a a nice feature.

I do not particularly like bicycle helmets (I have a $200 Giro). Too much
slipstream fru-fru. Reminds me of the lycra folks.

I don't like riding with a helmet when it is Spring/summer/fall. Too hot.

However, I really like wearing a helmet in the rain, and in the winter to
keep the wintry blast off my head.

I have a 2009 helmet that I like. But the outer plastic is starting to lift
away from the Styrofoam body.

But my problem is that most helmets are made with such a high dome they
make me look funny when I wear them. I have tried others that looked low
dome, but still look high dome on me.

So I would look for something with a flat, low dome. Anyone know of one
that doesn't cost over 60$US?

I don't know why no one has developed a more "normal" looking helmet, with
low dome, meaning something that looks like regular clothes, and not all
science fiction like most helmets look.
