After disabling Virex 5.9.1, Retrospect 4.3 was able to access the
storage sets created on the weekend and perform a full restore to my
server. :-)

Does Virex 6.1 cause the same problem?

Cheers, Malcolm

OK, I guess thats in the doc somewhere. ;-)

The only other machine I have with enough spare disk space to test this is
my wife's iBook ... I installed Retrospect 4.3 and it worked fine. Actually
the throughput was almost 4 time what my old 8500 does ... could be 10baseT
vs full duplex 100baseT but I guess the 8500 is just showing its age.

Hence I conclude that there is an issue with the disk subsystem in my 8500
... ACARD PCI IDE/66 adapter and IBM 20GB IDE disk. :-(

Sounds like a good opportunity simulate a disk failure and perform reformat
and do a full restore from backup.

Cheers, Malcolm

Oops, I didn't mean on sending that out to the group.

My point is that the -23 has been known to be caused by extension conflicts.
It may be worth while to attempt to reproduce the problem with basic Apple
extensions to see if the problem goes away.

Sorry for the confusion.

Re: 4.3 and the bleeding edge

2000-07-24 Thread Matthew Tevenan

All,

I've replied to Craig off-list about this, but I'd thought I'd clue you all
in on what might be going on here. Retrospect 4.3 introduced significant
changes in the way it deals with high-end, high-speed SCSI cards. This was
done in an effort to speed up Retrospect's communication with these drives
and really take advantage of these cards' capabilities, which Retrospect was
not fully doing in version 4.2 and earlier.

Therefore, the (in many cases) significant speed increase is more likely to
bring out problems. These problems, though they may have always been
present, may have only surfaced now thanks to the newly increased speed.
That's what I suspect happened in Craig's case, and may occur in others.
Once again, I encourage anyone receiving similar symptoms with high-end SCSI
cards and fast drives to contact Dantz technical support at 925.253.3050 or
[EMAIL PROTECTED] for assistance. Thanks,

Re: 4.3 and the bleeding edge

2000-07-24 Thread Robin Mayoff

We have seen another cause for this error, from the DSL:

NCE (No Change Expected) for the Macintosh

In the last week I have had two customers report -23 errors when doing a
backup with DiskFit Direct.

In both cases the customers had recently installed Virex 5.9.1.

I ran a test. If the Virex 5.9.1 control panel is installed, you will get
-23 errors during backup.

The only workaround is to Turn off Virex Control Panel or don't use DiskFit.

the -23 could be an extension conflict for the user.

Retrospect, it's is being mapped directly from the OS. That's why Pat looked

Yes, I should have posted that information with the original post.
9600/184mb w/ Newer G3 card, OS 9.0.4. The drive is an APS enclosure Sony DDS-4 68 pin
wide off a Adaptec 2940UW (bus 2, id 1). The primary drive (internal) for the machine
is also on this card (SCSI bus 2, id 6).

SCSI config looks like this:
Bus 0
id 0 IBM HD
id 3 CD-ROM
id 5 Zip
Bus 1
id 4 Yamaha CDR 4260
Bus 2
id1 DDS-4 tape [Sony SDT-1]
id 6 Quantum Atlas 9gb

Other cards in the machine: Keyspan USB, Asante 10/100 Ethernet, Keyspan Serial Port
Expansion card (not in use), the video card.

As soon as I have a chance I intend to do the extensions thing looking for conflicts
there, but since this thing hangs on the SCSI scan, I'm not sure that that is worth the
time.

In pulling up the error message on the Mac OS errors list, it indicates that
the disk driver is not cooperating with the file manager. {-23openErr
Requested read/write permission doesn't match driver's open permission,}

Sounds like it could be a problem with the disk driver on your disk in this
case. What formatting software was used to format the ATA disk? Did it see
it as a SCSI drive or an ATA drive?

Have you tried creating a greater than 2GB file set on a connected SCSI hard

Actually it does create the storage set and it compares ok during script
execution, but later I cannot browse the contents, I cannot rebuild the
directory, and I cannot restore from it. Whenever I attempt any
operation on the Storage Set I get an error dialog;

Couldn't open catalog Qube - Archive error -23 (unknown)

The Operations Log would indicate that all went well ...

As Storage Sets > 2Gb is a new feature I decided to actually go through
the exercise of checking the snapshot, the contents, and the ability to
RESTORE ... glad I did!

Just to be sure that I hadn't done something wrong or that there was a
problem with my system I performed the same exercise on two volumes < 2GB
... they worked fine.

My backup computer is an 8500, 233MHz 604e, 128MB RAM, 20GB IDE HD (via
IDE PCI card), builtin DDS2, running MacOS 9.0.4. The "server" is a
Gateway Microserver (i.e Linux on MIPS, running Netatalk).

I was so looking forward to having storage sets > 2GB on the MacOS
version :-(

Cheers, Malcolm

4.3 and the bleeding edge

2000-07-21 Thread Craig Gaevert

Well, 4.3 is a bust for me. During script execution it scans the deives and freezes
when it hits my tape drive (Sony DDS-4, scsi bus 2 device 1). Funny but 4.2 was rock
solid. G.
