Darned Eudora IMAP client that every so often decides to check the 
server (for no apparent reason)--see my correction below.

Actually, this isn't quite right. Retrospect for the Mac uses temp memory by
default. It's perfectly acceptable to leverage unused system memory in this
fashion (though very few programs do), and it's the best way for Retrospect
to have access to the memory it needs on-the-fly, without permanently using
up that vital system resource.

The easiest way to prevent Retrospect from using temp system memory is to
assign it more than 8,192 K in the Finder.

And in case you're wondering who turned on that 'temp memory' setting when
you didn't even know it existed - Apparently the 'temp memory' setting was
recommended a couple of versions ago; since then it has become preferable to
leave it off. If you upgraded your copy of Retrospect from an earlier
version this pref may have persisted. A little relic from the days of the
Apple Workgroup Server 95, when A/UX still walked the earth

Brad Suinn, an ASIP enginner for Apple, has compiled a list of advice 
for making your ASIP Server more stable.  Look in the ASIP list 
archives, if you can, and look for recent messages from Brad.

In the advice compiled (from a variety of sources) there is the 
technique to stop Retrospect from using temp memory, which seems to 
cause problems with ASIP's use of Temp memory for it's cache.  This 
seems a likely culprit for many of the ASIP/Retrospect issues.

remotely.

pardon for butting in,

We are also running an Appleshare server and Retrospect on the same machine - the 
advantage to this is the higher datarate from backing up local drives than backing up 
over the network.

Apppleshare 5.0.3, Retrospect 4.2 on a Powermac 8500/150 w/256 Meg. RAM; Micronet 
DD7000 Raid; 40Meg of RAM are reserved for applications, Retrospect is set to use 
10Meg. of RAM.  Retrospect is also backing up aprox. 25 network clients.  Backup 
hardware is a Sony DDS-3 tape changer on a seperate SCSI bus from the Datadock.

This configuration has been very stable for us.

I've been backing up ASIP 6.2/OS 8.6 via remote client 4.2 for over a year
without a problem.

Just to clarify - you are running the retrospect client on your ASIP server,
and the Retrospect app on a dedicated machine, correct? Running the
retrospect app on your ASIP server is a bad idea.

What kind of error message are you getting, if any?
