Ah. This is probably because Rosegarden starts JACK on launch. Go

Other midi programs work well (timidity and linthesia), but as soon as I
run Rosegarden, all sound disappears from my computer and as soon as I quit
form Rosegarden, the computer sound appears again.

In the "Manage MIDI Devices" timidity appears but produces no sound. My
eletric piano also appears and if I configure Rosegarder to sound through
the piano, then it works.

But if you already know how to get MIDI to work with Linux, then you
probably just need to go to Studio > Manage MIDI Devices and configure

Hello Will,

I still have a heart for Rosegarden and hope to be a contributing member again.
My current work situation restricts my ability to contribute. Though I hope I

I've been super swamped lately.

Listening to it right now. I like the Solo sound (if that's what you're
using for the melody). Seem quite expressive.

Seems a little thin in the bass - maybe add a bowed double bass? Or a
duet with a cello? There are points toward the end where I feel like a
cello playing counterpoint with the main melody would fit nicely.

I have a Maudio 2496 sound card but it's MIDI port is used for a Sound Canvas
(although I don't use it much these days) so instead I have each keyboard going
to its own MIDI port in a MIDIsport 2x2. One keyboard outputs on CH1 and the
other on CH2.

In Rosegarden's 'Manage MIDI Devices' I add 2 new recording devices and point
one each to the respective MIDIsport ports.

Using tracks 1 and 2, in the main window and 'Special Parameters' field I set
the channel numbers to 1 and 2 respectively. You have to leave the Device as
'All' - I expect that's a bug :(

When you are in playback mode, both keyboards will produce the sound of the
currently selected track, but once you start to record they will separate out
correctly, and record to the right tracks. I can see the sense in that, but it
would be useful if there was a Record-Pause feature (at least, I couldn't find
one).

I then simply have yoshimi channels 1 and 2 set to the voices I want for each
keyboard.

Yes, the lead instrument is my new Solo voice :)

I agree that some bass might be a good idea and possibly a counter melody in
places, but I'm not entirely sure the best way to go about this. I'll leave it a
while anyway - I don't want to risk over-egging the cake!

If your wife says it's OK that can't be bad, can it :D

Use Fluidsynth, either standalone as external programm (controlled by

In my huumble opinion the DSSI version might *not* be recommended for

2012-08-21 Thread John
I would like to thank all you respondents who tried to help me..I have Jack,
Qsynth, Timidity installed. But I am at a loss how I can tie all these pieces
together to produce any sound.
How to plug in any of these pieces?
The info message box in rosegarden says visit
Edit-Preferences-Behaviour-Graphics performance. There is no obvious way
to do this !
The Union interface of Ubuntu 12.04 does not lend itself to do things as one
would do in a KDE environment.
I wonder if linux is getting so smart, that it tends to outsmart itself with
the increased complexity. Michael McIntyre Tutorial is a great write up, but is
not geared to modern hardware. It is based on KDE
and I am lost how to apply it to my Union interface.

Not really. Yoshimi does not support soundfonts, which is what the
 original question was about.

Personally I am not a great fan of Yoshimi/ZynAddSubFX. Yes, it can
produce some very good sounds. But I think it has one of the ugliest user

But now you will say: start trying the preset libraries. I have, and
almost every preset has much too much reverb. Not my piece of cake.

On the other side, there are not that many (native) softsynths for Linux,

I'm going to defer these basic, common questions to the rest of the community.

The info message box in rosegarden says visit Edit-Preferences-Behaviour-
Graphics performance. There is no obvious way to do this!

There certainly should be. I started Rosegarden, went to the Edit menu, found
Preferences down at the bottom, and the Behavior tab was the first thing up,
with the Graphics Performance option the very first choice available.

Rosegarden no longer uses KDE, and it looks the same everywhere. If that
option really isn't obvious to you, then somebody could have customized your
particular build of Rosegarden in some weird way. Distros do that kind of
thing. It's annoying.

Anyway, the graphics performance thing is a very minor consideration in the
scheme of things.

Michael McIntyre Tutorial is a great write up, but is not geared to modern
 hardware.

Actually, the hardware has changed very little since those days. If anything,
the spectrum of hardware out there in the world is less complicated now,
because all the really good stuff has been discontinued, and everybody is
dealing with the worst case scenario now.

Rosegarden, however, has changed considerably since those days. I never went
back through that old tutorial to bring everything up to date. I'm afraid
there's just nothing in it for me, and it would be an enormous amount of work.

Re: [Rosegarden-user] Get sound working with Realtek sound card

2012-08-21 Thread david
Linux isn't the problem: the problem is Unity's misguided attempt to
force apps to share a single menu instead of giving each its own menu in
its own window (the way every other desktop UI on Linux does).

Replace the worthless Unity interface with XFCE. We had to do that on my
wife's netbook so she could use single-window programs that were a lot
less complex than Rosegarden!

Not really. Yoshimi does not support soundfonts, which is what the

Personally I am not a great fan of Yoshimi/ZynAddSubFX. Yes, it can
produce some very good sounds. But I think it has one of the ugliest user
interfaces I know, making it very difficult to get a good grip and
understanding of the huge number of possibilities this softsynth, I must
 admit, does have.

There are many Linux Distributions (a.k.a Distros) out there, a very few
distros are customized for MIDI related music: Musix, Studio64, Ubuntu
Studio...

Those distributions should have all the apps above and should also have
Rosegarden setup to run from the desktop menu.

If you try most other Linux distros, chances are they are missing lots of
setup applications and configurations. Lots and lots of info, too much to
share in a couple of email messages. Chances are one would be wasting lots of
time trying to figure things out without some working examples.

Your best bet would be to try one of the above mentioned distributions, at
least their LiveCD. Booting up from the LiveCD, and run the apps, then inspect
the settings for each of those apps and how they are tied together. Those
LiveCD should be the best way for self learning if one spend the time to look
around. These are excellent working examples to learn from.

The Union interface of Ubuntu 12.04 does not lend itself to

McIntyre Tutorial is a great write up, but is not geared to

I think you mean Unison, not Union? Or, perhaps I could be wrong, because I
don't even touch *buntu stuff.

With most major Linux distros, you can run KDE, GNOME, Unity, LXDE, Fluxbox, or
any desktop environment. Just happens that the default desktop is chosen as
one way to use Linux. There is no restriction if you want to use other
desktop environment. So if one doesn't like Unity, install and run with a
different desktop environment. Most people are just so afraid of trying other
options, or choices, or afraid they may break the computer. Or they were
conditioned by Apple, or Microsoft, or their cell phone and PDA that they
don't dare to try anything else.

Every application has its own interface defined by their developers. They will
decide what they want to do. The desktop environments is just another
application. So one should learn how to use each application and don't pretend
all the apps are one and the same thing.

If you think in Windows everything look the same, perhaps you should look at
the different versions of Windows, every new version of recent releases, people
have to learn a whole new way of doing thing, especially with the countless
system settings. Such a waste of time.

Stick with one way of doing thing and be productive instead of wasting lots of
time tweaking with how things look every few months because things look old.

But when I type, e.g. aconnect 130:3 129:0 I can't get sound. I also
tried it with all the other timidity-ports, bu without sucess.
The only way to get sound is to use one of the dssi-plugins (e.g.
hexter).
I should mention that I use version 10.02 of rosegarden, on a xubuntu
maverick meerkat machine.

It seems like the most likely explanation here is that TiMidity doesn't have
access to the audio hardware, and isn't producing sound.

If your distro boots up with TiMidity running by default, as Ubuntu does, then
I've found that the TiMidity process started by the init scripts frequently
loses access to the audio hardware somewhere along the way. It's best to kill
that off and run TiMidity by hand. I think the syntax you want is:

  timidity -iA -Oj -D

Since you're getting sound out of synth plugins, you should definitely be able
to get sound out of QSynth, if not TiMidity.
