[scifinoir2] Re: Tale of the Titans
In line with our other disagreement regarding female beauty I was disappointed by Davalos' casting as Andromeda because I don't think she is fetching enough for the role. IMHO the actress playing Io (Gemma Arteton - the erstwhile Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Silence) is way prettier (and, the way the auteurs have bastardized the original story, you actually root for Perseus and Io to get together). Davalos' casting is another example of the current filmmakers being tone death to the story. Andromeda has to be beautiful enough to offend the Gods. Re: [scifinoir2] Science Fiction Hall of Fame Inductees 2010
Wow, great choices. I love Zelazny's work. Even his most pedestrian prose flows like poetry. Loved his Amber novels, and the book Lord of Light is one of my all time fav scifi novels. Matheson's history is huge: how many Twilight Zone, Outer Limit, Trek, and other scifi shows owe some of their ideas to his works? Butler's a pioneer of course, still being probably the most critically acclaimed female scifi writer of color--and respected in her own right outside of that. - Original Message - From: thebayindo s...@bayindogroup.com To: scifinoir2@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, April 2, 2010 3:35:19 AM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: [scifinoir2] Science Fiction Hall of Fame Inductees 2010 The Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame has announced the 2010 Hall of Fame inductees: Octavia E. Re: [scifinoir2] Re: Tale of the Titans
Yeah we disagree. When Davalos is done up, I think she's quite stunning. And although of French/Semitic heritage, I believe, i can see her playing a Greek goddess more than some I've seen chosen for the role... As for Arteton being way prettie, yeah, we completely disagree. The brunette Davalos is way more striking to me. But that's personal opinions. You answered the question I asked Worf a few days ago, about when a 3D film is really *made* for 3D. I can't tell when or if they actually conceive, shoot, and edit a film for real 3D the way Cameron did, or when they tack on 3D effects as a sloppy addition. From what you say, it's the later for Clash, so i won't waste the extra ducats on a 3D showing. Maybe I'll do How to Train Your Dragon in 3D, then catch Clash in 2D, and of course Why Did I Get Married Too is only on 2D also! - Original Message - From: Kelwyn ravena...@yahoo.com To: scifinoir2@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, April 2, 2010 11:48:08 AM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: [scifinoir2] Re: Tale of the Titans In line with our other disagreement regarding female beauty I was disappointed by Davalos' casting as Andromeda because I don't think she is fetching enough for the role. [scifinoir2] Avatar to the IMAX
http://blackplush.blogspot.com/2010/04/avatar-to-imax.html It is hard to believe anything can surpass the experience of watching Avatar in 3-D. Then James Cameron and crew takes it up a notch and releases the movie in the IMAX format. And I am not talking about seeing it at some rinky-dink flat IMAX screen, I am talking about crystal clear images on a six-story-tall screen with wraparound digital surround sound at an IMAX® Dome Theater. Settling back in your stadium seat and seeing the movie unspool in front of you, above you and on either side of you is a transcendent experience. Filmed to take advantage of the full IMAX experience, Avatar has so much to engage the eye and ear it is sometimes hard to decide what to focus on. And all of it is spectacular, stupendous, marvelous - you lose track of superlatives. This format allows you to appreciate the proper scale of the ten-foor tall Navi and the majesty of Hometree. The flora and fauna is awe-inspiring and the predators are truly menacing. That was scary! my seventeen year-old daughter exclaimed as Jake Scully (Sam Worthington) made a hairbreadth escape. The photo-realism is stunning. With the world of Paradox literally wrapped around you, everything is heightened: the drama, the suspense; even the romance. You can actually look into Neytiri's face and see every facet of her large, expressive eyes. ~rave!

Alongside celebrities such as Elton John , Clay Aiken , and Wanda Sykes , Paquin declared her sexual orientation in a public service announcement for Cyndi Lauper 's Give a Damn Campaign , which promotes equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. Two videos were shot in Los Angeles on January 30 and were released April 1 at 9 a.m. EST. What makes 27-year-old Paquin's spot particularly surprising is that, unlike some of the other openly gay celebrities involved in the campaign, the actor had never before discussed being bisexual. According to RadarOnline.com, even people at the shoot were surprised when Paquin made the revelation. A second PSA features Sex and the City actor Cynthia Nixon (who came out in 2006 ), Jason Mraz, Kim Kardashian , and Sharon and Kelly Osbourne . Paquin follows an interesting trend of celebrities forgoing the traditional coming out People magazine interview -- à la Clay Aiken and Lance Bass -- and instead controlling the message themselves. Ricky Martin buried his announcement at the bottom of an otherwise banal blog post, and now Paquin is using her announcement to drive attention to a cause she supports. So much attention, in fact, that servers at wegiveadamn.org crashed shortly after the news broke of Paquin's statement. Paquin -- who at age 11 became the second-youngest Oscar winner in history when she won for best supporting actress for The Piano -- has been notoriously shy about discussing her private life and has never before discussed her sexuality. In 2007, she was romantically linked with actor Kieran Culkin . In August 2009, she and True Blood costar Stephen Moyer announced their engagement. The Give a Damn campaign is part of Cyndi Lauper's True Colors Fund (named after her popular 1986 song and album). Lauper is currently promoting the cause during her turn on the Donald Trump -judged show Celebrity Apprentice .

Re: [scifinoir2] Avatar to the IMAX
There are different types of IMAX. There are differences that you may notice but I believe that there are differences in all types of film and digital. For example technicolor vs cinemascope or Panavision. They all have a special look to it. The differences in analog IMAX and digital IMAX will also be different. There are things that you may see in a digital IMAX that you may not have seen analog because more information is being caught. I like to use the example of watching Will Smith in Ali and being able to see every single hair in his armpit. If it were analog I wouldn't really have noticed it because you would have recognized it as hair and moved on. Digital makes each hair stand out in the shot. It is a bit unnatural. Sorry, not mine. I've never understood why anyone would want to be with someone who's not totally committed. It's hard enough to have to keep tabs on an attractive, famous person being faithful to you on one side of the fence. I wouldn't want to be worried about someone being attracted to both sides. But I hear what you're saying. By the way, I've known some guys who've been involved in those situations, and no matter how cool and with-it they claimed to be ahead of time, they always had issues when the women sometimes enjoyed each other without the dude. It was a combination of things. One, once the dude's passion dies down and he's thinking again, he always freaks out a bit when realizing this person is actually enjoying being with someone of the same sex. And two, they actually weren't as cool about sharing their mate with someone as they thought, even though they thought it would be less difficult with another woman. - Original Message - From: Mr. Worf hellomahog...@gmail.com To: scifinoir2@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, April 2, 2010 3:00:17 PM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: Re: [scifinoir2] True Blood Star Pacquin Comes Out on Video She's bi. [scifinoir2] Stargate SGU Marathon on SyFy
SyFy's running a marathon of SGU all day today, leading up to a new ep later tonight. Watching many of the shows again, I still find a lot of things about it to like. The biggest thing is I'm starting to like the Brother is the show. Initial reactions I had were Great, another angry black man, another black man who's not the leader, but a subordinate. But I'm seeing some of the ways he's acted, and he seems to have a core of something else, perhaps a rough edge, but a desire to really do what's right. Starting to grow on me.

[scifinoir2] Early CNET Review of iPad
I won't be buying one anytime soon, but it's intriguing. Still, the lack of an ability to run more than one major session/app at a time is disappointing, and what's with Apple's stubborn refusal to support Flash on its devices? I'm also not getting why something as used as a video camera function would be left off a device that's supposed to be portable, and can cost as much as a decent laptop. * http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-31747_7-20001505-243.html Photo of Donald holding an iPad. It's here. (Credit: Josh P. Miller/CNET) Note : The following blog post is a review in-progress, which we will be adding to throughout the day as we spend more time with the iPad . The Apple iPad is an unprecedented device. It doesn't shoot rainbows or make puppies, but this roughly 8x10-inch tablet computer melds your laptop, smartphone, gaming console, and iPod into single, affordable, unfortunately named thing. Of course, we come to you with a standard list of complaints. The absence of an integrated video camera puts the kibosh on any hope of using the iPad for video chats, and without Flash video support, many Web pages look like Swiss cheese. But the biggest problem with the device is coming up with bullet-proof reasons to buy one. Apple iPad from every angle (photos) Because the iPad is an entirely new class of device, you'll probably need to lie to yourself a little to justify the purchase. But at this point, any CNET readers worth their salt have mastered the art of making excuses to buy new gadgets. For the uninitiated, Apple has posted a cheat sheet of demo videos that provide a smorgasbord of reasonable answers to the question: Why do I need an iPad? To hear Apple tell it, the iPad is a Web browser for your living room, an e-book reader for the den, a movie player for the kids, a photo album, a jukebox, a gamer's best friend, a word processor, an e-mail machine, and YouTube junkie's dream come true. No excuse good enough for you? Wait few minutes and a developer will inevitably make an app for it. Whatever you need to tell yourself to buy an iPad, we can safely say the device is a worthwhile addition to any wired home. We don't give much weight to the pundits who say that the iPad is the future of the personal computer, but we think it's the most entertaining gadget we'll see all year. What is it, exactly? If you're coming to this review already versed on the nitty gritty of what the iPad is and its roots in the iPhone and iPod Touch, feel free to skip ahead. Otherwise, here's the scoop: The iPad is a touch-screen tablet computer, roughly the size of a magazine, with three models that connect to the Internet strictly over Wi-Fi (16GB for $499, 32GB for $599, 64GB for $699) and three that use a combination of Wi-Fi and ATT's 3G wireless (16GB for $629, 32GB for $729, and 64GB for $829--pay-as-you go for the data subscription). The iPad runs the same software found on Apple's popular iPhone and iPod Touch. Apple calls this software the iPhone OS, and it's generally regarded as one of the most successful operating systems designed for use with touch-screen devices. Unlike conventional computer OS software, designed around the mouse and the keyboard, the iPhone OS only responds to touch input and is generally only capable of running applications one at a time. If you've ever used an iPhone or iPod Touch, the iPad will feel immediately familiar. Out of the box, you get many of the iPhone's capabilities, including Apple-designed applications (apps) for Web browsing, e-mail, maps, photos, music, video, YouTube, and more. More apps can be installed using the built-in App Store software or by connecting the iPad to iTunes via your computer using the included cable. If you already own apps purchased for an iPhone or iPod Touch, you can transfer these apps to the iPad, as well. Photo of iPad being held in one hand.(Credit: Donald Bell/CNET) Design Apple rarely skimps on design and the iPad is no exception. The screen is made of the same oleophobic-coated glass as the iPhone 3GS', making it relatively easy to wipe away fingerprints. Behind the glass is an LED-backlit, 9.7-inch capacitive touch screen that uses IPS (in-plane switching) technology for above-average viewing angles. Below the screen sits a home button that looks and behaves exactly like the one on the iPhone and iPod Touch, bouncing you out of any open app and placing you back in the main menu. Matte aluminum wraps around the backs and sides of the iPad, tapering a bit around the edges. If you've ever held one of Apple's unibody MacBooks, you know exactly the kind of feel and finish of the iPad's aluminum. Unlike the polished chrome of the iPod or glossy plastic of the iPhone, the back of the iPad seems less likely to show wear. Re: [scifinoir2] True Blood Star Pacquin Comes Out on Video
What you are talking about is insecurity. The fear is that the person who is bi will leave the other person for someone of the same sex. (ie. they are really gay) That is a myth. The flip side of that is there another myth that the person that is gay is secretly straight. Both cloud the real issue of insecurity. The cure for insecurity is trust. I don't expect folks in this group to totally understand what I'm talking about because this group isn't an alternative sexuality one, but I know what I'm talking about. On Fri, Apr 2, 2010 at 2:30 PM, Keith Johnson keithbjohn...@comcast.netwrote: Sorry, not mine. Word is that more than 500 titles will be available through the application at time of launch on Saturday. The pre-launch copy of the application I'm testing shows many titles offered at $1.99, and a number of selections also available for free. All the Marvel classics are here: Avengers, X-Men, Hulk, Spider Man, IronMan, Captain America, and a number of newer titles. User interface details of note: the ability to finger-flip through, page by page; scrollable bar of thumbs for all pages at the bottom of the page view, so you can skip ahead easily; double-click to zoom into an individual frame and finger-flip forward to advance frame by frame instead of page by page.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/01/AR2010040103444.html?g=0 Mr. Allen and his wife, Helene, were profiled in a Washington Post story in 2008 that explored the history of blacks in the White House. The couple were excited about the possibility of Barack Obama's historic election and their opportunity to vote for him. Helene, however, died on the eve of the election, and Mr. Allen went to vote alone. The couple had been married for 65 years. Afterward, Mr. Allen, who had been living quietly in a simple house off Georgia Avenue NW in the District, experienced a fame that he had only witnessed beforehand. He received a VIP invitation to Obama's swearing-in, where a Marine guard escorted him to his seat. Eyes watering, he watched the first black man take the oath of office of the presidency.
[scifinoir2] Fwd: Topic: Sub-mariner the movie?
This is from a post I made in 2007. Has anyone heard anything about this? David Boreanaz a.k.a. Angel from the Buffy-verse may be walking (or swimming) a mile in the sandals of Marvel's Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner. Universal Pictures and director Jonathan Mostow (*U-571*, *Terminator 3*) are making a movie based on the Sub-Mariner's exploits and its rumored that Boreanaz recently auditioned for the title role. If there's an actor alive that can make swimming, fighting lame villains (occasionally the Fantastic Four) and talking to fish interesting, he can. *Darkhorizons.com What do you think about this?? * Celebrating 10 years of bringing diversity to perversity! [scifinoir2] ebook prices going up soon
http://jam.canoe.ca/Books/2010/03/30/13414016-cp.html ebook prices going up soon By Michael Oliveira, THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - If you were thinking about buying an ebook, you may want to do it now. The prices of most new releases will soon be hiked by as much as 30 to 50 per cent. A major upheaval in the ebook world is coming Thursday, with five of the six biggest publishers in North America implementing a new pricing regime that will do away with discounting and the need for comparison shopping. Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins, MacMillan, Penguin Group and Simon Schuster are moving to the so-called agency model, which means they will dictate the price their ebooks are sold at and retailers will be forced to follow. It's expected to result in price increases for new releases, which consumers will definitely notice, said Mike Serbinis, chief executive of Kobo, the online ebook retailer owned 58 per cent by Indigo Books Music Inc. (TSX:IDG). The days of new releases usually priced at US$9.99 are numbered and readers can think of $12.99 or $14.99 as the new normal. I think what you're going to see is a lack of discounts, so consumers will notice that. So far, they've seen list prices of $29.99 and 60 per cent discounts, with the actual selling prices around 10 bucks - that will go away in general, he said. However, there's still one major publisher that hasn't switched over to the new pricing model, Random House, and Serbinis expects its books will be discounted aggressively by retailers. The launch of Thursday's new pricing regime was a last-minute change imposed by the publishers and retailers are scrambling to adapt by the deadline. As a result, some titles may disappear temporarily, if all the logistics aren't sorted out in time. We're working feverishly, like all the other major players in this space, to get ready for Thursday, the change - I would say like all things in this space right now - has happened very fast, said Serbinis. There's legal stuff to do, there's IT things to do to get the new pricing and the new approach and the new rules in place in time. Macmillan CEO John Sargent said in a blog post that its new releases generally will be priced between $12.99 and $14.99, although there might be some exceptions. When books go into paperback, the ebook price typically will be reduced to a range of $6.99 to $9.99, he added.
