Re: [silk] What did you change your mind about in 2019?

2020-01-12 Thread Venkat Mangudi - Silk
John,

Nice post. And not boring at all. As usual, made for a good read.

I can’t say much about Republican vs Democrats being a resident of India.
My few years in the US were pretty busy with the kids and I didn’t give a
thought to politics. Not that I do otherwise. :-)

Your points on religion are pretty similar to mine. I have to add that
religion is mostly used as a tool to aid regional patriotism & politics,
IMHO. The only thing is that the region keeps growing as the religion
spreads. And as the region grows, the other regions/religions start going
crazy.

This takes me back to Asimov’s Foundation series.
1. If humanity survives another 10,000 years, what will those humans think
of us?
2. Will we be remembered just like how we remember the cave men?
3. Will they laugh at our religion based politics/divisions and lack of
unity?
4. And will these stupid religions be taken to other planets if we
colonize them?

Regards,
Venkat

MTR is over-rated. :-)

CTR (there are two of them near Malleswaram) is better for dosas. Shree
Sagar (Central tiffin room - CTR1) is near the Malleswaram ground.
Chikkanna Tiffin Room (CTR2) is near the temple in Kumara Park. Both have
lip-smacking dosas.

Venkateshwara Sweets for Mysore Pak, Veena Stores for Idlis.

Other decent dosas are at Airlines Hotel, Konark on Residency Road and
Ballal Residency (also Residency Road).

Hope this helps.

Re: [silk] Disposing off film SLRs in Bangalore / Bay Area

I gave away my old N65 here in Bangalore to a photography student. But,
to avoid fraud, I would recommend that you sell it for about INR 1500 or

I agree with the shoes bit. I don’t buy the high end stuff, but I rarely buy
anything other than Hush Puppies these days. Partly because I can afford them
without feeling guilty.

Fragrances - totally agree. The wife doesn’t agree one bit about this, though.

Computers, I don’t agree fully. As Thaths says about smartphones, I think the
same holds good for computers. I don’t use one for more than 2-3 years.
Probably because I buy it as a business expense, but if I were to not earn
anymore, I’d just get one and keep it forever. :)

> 1. Tripods + head: I spent more on a carbon fiber tripod and head

> Worth every penny if you are into landscape photography.

Tripods - I agree. But I would not spend $1000 on one. I’ve moved to mirrorless
equipment, and I am ok with a Manfrotto tripod+head. Carries the equipment
without losing stability, but then this is a personal choice.

My current list:
1. Travel in luxury. I’d rather spend a little more and fly premium economy or
business for long distance flights. I’d stay in a reasonably good place. I am
ok to stay with less luxury depending on where, for instance, I’d rather stay
in Jungle Lodges and Resorts than the expensive resorts in Kabini.
2. Good threads. I’d pay more for clothes that are comfortable and long lasting
than buy a lot of inexpensive ones that don’t last.
3. Coffee. I’d pay more for coffee if it’s really good, than buy at a
Starbucks/CCD.
4. Books/e-Books.

I agree with Thaths that pre-cut vegetables are pointless. I enjoy cooking and
that’s a big part of it. :)

Venkat

Re: [silk] Delhi meetup?

2016-11-07 Thread Venkat Mangudi - Silk
I don’t think that is added by Gmail. Here is what my subject says "Re: [silk]
Delhi meetup?”. I think this is added by the mailing list server. But if people
are using gmail and have opted to view as conversations, then it is possible
that gmail adds both threads to the same conversation. I do think that it is
improbable though.

As a Tamil Kannadiga, he is spot on. Sometimes I find the activism here a
little petty, as he has so eloquently put. The last time there was a
Cauvery issue, around 1992, it was much more violent. Thankfully, it has
been reasonably peaceful this time.

Re: [silk] Eating Millet

2016-08-08 Thread Venkat Mangudi - Silk
There are many studies that have shown that the dietary cholesterol does
not increase blood cholesterol. Of course, there are older studies that
negate this. However, a bunch of new research such as this one [1] shows
that blood cholesterol depends on other factors.

I have been on the Keto diet for the last 3 years. My cholesterol levels
that were considered dangerous on a normal low fat diet is now normal on
a High fat diet. All I eat is fat, with a bit of protein and almost no
carbs. I know a whole lot of people on this list who are ketoers with great
results. While it is difficult to believe, considering that all of us have
been preached to about low fat, high carb foods, I can confidently say that
dietary fat has no effect on blood lipids.

Wow! What a piece. My thoughts below.

On Wednesday, July 22, 2015, Udhay Shankar N ud...@pobox.com wrote:

Charlie Stross is reliably thought-provoking, in his books, and on his

bit is the almost throwaway reference to the internet as 'functional
 telepathy'.

For me, it is his posit that the middleman will soon be unable to add value
as we race to the bottom to reduce costs. Whither the startups that are
fuelling entrepreneurs now? How does the job market transform? Do people
start going back to banks and public sector jobs, or government jobs?
Today, everyone wants to start a new company. If there is no incentive and
the search becomes free at the point of delivery, what kind of startups
will be born?

Do you agree? Especially given the piece is a set-up for the last
line: Is telepathy compatible with the continued existence of
 capitalism?
