I'm using a static IP with Free.Fr. Except the IP does not change over
time, from the point of view of the speedtouch modem, it's allocated
like a dynamic IP using the PPP protocol. So, no change required in this
case.

Correct. It is not a "patch" which could "modify" your modem. It's a
full firmware because there is no firmware at all in the modem itself.
Thus a firmware needs to be uploaded each time the modem is powered off
(unplugged).

INSTALL, INSTALL.txt.fr (and now INSTALL.txt.it, italian translation),
either in the source package or online have a small line:

"Note: replace make by gmake on BSD systems."

Which doc are you refering to?

Hi André!

This is a usual problem. I think you configure your eth0 interface to
have a default route over it (which is wrong). In this case, pppd is no
longer adding a default router over ppp0 and thus you have no internet
connection.

No problem Francois. I have been maintaining the BSD part by checking
that each release compiled fine on all BSD variants (using gmake).
However, I've not tested if it works correctly, but since I did not
change the BSD specific code, it should!

This firmware is quite old. The new one is really the 3.012 version
available on the Thomson web site as well:

http://www.speedtouch.com/driver_upgrade_lx_3.0.1.2.htm

Even if this file is labelled to be only for the SpeedTouch 330, it also
contains the firmware for previous SpeedTouch revision.

Is this your IP or did you replace it with some dumb values?
The message about MRU seems strange.
Did you get DNS numbers as well?

This is a normal message if there is only once (each time you load the

Some 2.4 kernels (I just look at 2.4.18 for instance) do not have the
usbfs filesystem (only usbdevfs). Should we attempt to use usbfs first
and fallback to usbdevfs or should we drop the usbdevfs support all

I think you are not used to method used by legal people :-).
Considering the Alcatel case, I receive an immediate message from them
just after uploading the firmware to my web site. They were asking to
remove the firmware which i did.

Now, not all companies behave nice. I recently received an email from
Sun's lawyer asking me to correct my web site to comply with their Java
trademark policies. Again, it was quite a polite request.

But now, consider that since your package is online, it will be cached
by google or http://www.archive.org/web/web.php or some other site. It
now means that your package is no longer in your control and that you
cannot remove it anymore! Now, some companies are enforcing their
intellectual property right just to get some money...

So, like baud123 said, i think it is the right time to join our effort
to make a polite request to Thomson (holder of the IP rights) to change
their license.

At least, it should be made redistributable so your package can be
legal. The best would be some DFSG-compliant license to have the driver
in main distributions (including GNU/Debian). But that would mean that
Thomson has to release the source code as well which is a decision
beyong a simple license change.

So far, I'm not a lawyer myself, but at least I can ask and try to get
in touch with Thomson to discuss that issue. Ideas on the process?

Like I said earlier, you cannot redistribute the firmare. See clause 4
of their license:

"4. Limitations on Transfer. The Developer will not sell, rent, lease or
otherwise transfer any or all of the Software, the Documentation or any
copies thereof, without the prior written consent of Thomson. The
Developer will not sublicense, assign, delegate, rent, lease or
otherwise transfer any or all of its rights under this Agreement."

The only way to redistribute the firmware is either :
- ask the "prior written consent of Thomson" (but that will apply only
to you)
- ask them to change the License (why not since they provided the
firwmare separately only for Linux users).

Anyway, I will examine your changes since you said they are better than
the official package :-). [You can discuss your enhancement on
#speedtouch as well].

The alcaudsl.sys file provided with the SpeedTouch 330 does not contains
the firmware. You need to download the .zip file from Thomson on their
web site: http://www.speedtouch.com/driver_upgrade_lx_3.0.1.2.htm

Note: replace make by gmake on BSD systems.

So, try again with gmake instead of make. This is a common trap.

Right! The driver version is given by "modem_run --version" for instance.

The BSD docs you are reading was written when 1.1 was released. It

Hi Daniel!

First configure your email client to properly answer. Your message is
not readable.

Next, what version of the driver are you trying to install? 1.3.1?
1.3.1 has not been tested on BSD yet (since no one tested it), but it
must work of course.

There are several problems in fact:

- the semaphore has been designed to be kept in memory, that might be
the first problem.

- some errors in modem_run leaves the semaphore with an incorrect value,
preventing modem_run to be run again. That's the second problem.

Right. modem_run tries to be smart, and sometimes this does not work. I
think modem_run should display at least one message on stderr so that
the user knows what happens.

[speedtouch] ANNOUNCE: New driver 1.3.1 released

2004-09-30 Thread Benoit PAPILLAULT
A new driver has been released. This is just a maintenance release to
correct a vulnerability that was found in modem_run (part of the
speedtouch driver) by Max Vozeler <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.

In fact, modem_run, pppoa2 and pppoa3 were using syslog() in a wrong
way. Strings containing %s (for instance) could be passed to syslog()
and used by malicious users to make buffer overflow. Since modem_run is
installed setuid on Debian system, there was a security risk. The ID
CAN-2004-0834 has been assigned to this vulnerability (See:
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2004-0834).

It is available at :
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=32758&package_id=28264&release_id=271734

The speedtouch website will be updated at:
http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/

Hi Andrej.

What are the values of the following parameters : lcp-echo-interval and
lcp-echo-failure? It's in the pppd configuration file (usually under
/etc/ppp/peers). While downloading your test files, monitor the line
with ping to see if ping time increase or not. It "might" be possible
that your peer does not answer fast enought to LCP echo request.

However, I don't understand while "all zeroes" works and not "all ones".
Kinda strange.

Hi Andrej,

What firmware are you using? I suggest to try the ones in the .zip file
from Thomson, available at:
http://www.speedtouch.com/driver_upgrade_lx_3.0.1.2.htm

Could you send us the PPP logs just before your connection stop working?
(BTW, there are 2 TCP/IP options that can prevent downloading on

The driver use the following endpoints (lines beginning with E:):

- EP_INT  0x81 => used by modem_run to detect the synchro
- EP_CODE_IN 0x85 \
- EP_CODE_OUT 0x05 |=> used by modem_run to load the firmware

- EP_DATA_IN 0x87 \
- EP_DATA_OUT 0x07 |=> used by pppoa3 to send/receive data

Some of those endpoints are missing in your case (or they have a
different number maybe?). Moreover, you have ISO ("Atr=01(Isoc)")
endpoints which are quite difficult to use under GNU/Linux. So this is
quite a bad news.

Conclusion: it's likely that the speedtouch linux driver will not work
with your modem. Contact me directly if you want to further investigate.

"union semun" is always a pain to declare. Wonder why it's not declared
in every system library (which is your case).

You need to use GNU make and not make.
So, try "gmake" instead of "make". Reports problem here.

From this line, it looks compatible with the usermode driver from
http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/. However, to make it work, you need
at least to add "speedtch" to the end of the file /etc/hotplug/blacklist.

Moreover, the speedtouch does an automatic detection of the proper
firmware to use with the "Rev=" field. We currently recognize "Rev=
0.00", "Rev= 2.00" and "Rev= 4.00". So obviously, some work is needed to
make your modem work.

Would you send the whole content of /proc/bus/usb/devices?

I applied your suggestion in the CVS version. Could you test them ? (I
only test them on GNU/Linux and I don't think it will harm on other
platform).

However, I already tested the code on FreeBSD 5.2.1 and do not have the
problem you reported... Furthermore, I take the code from the info page
of autoconf... You might also contact them to update their info page.

This is a know bug in the script speedtouch-start when used with a PPPoE
connection. The problem being that the interface created by pppoa3 is
not "UP" and can't be used.

You might try the patch from Tiago Cogumbreiro

You could also try the CVS version where this problem has been fixed in

The design of modem_run has changed. Like you said, it was designed to
start and stay up. This is still the same. However, if you kill it, it
will no longer starts and stay up.

Look at this message for the new design explanation:
http://www.mail-archive.com/speedtouch%40ml.free.fr/msg06407.html

Concerning your problem, I think the usb library (pusb-bsd.c) does not
return the same exit code as in Linux and thus, when you unplug your
modem,it is not detected. Patch is welcome :-)

Hi Tiago,

Your patch is welcome, but the list does not support attachments except
plain text. I would to discuss about PPPoE support since I think there
are two ways to handle it in scripts:

- either the speedtouch-start creates only the ethernet interface and
let other tools (like pppoeconf) to use it. I think this is the proper
solution

- either the speedtouch-start takes care of everything, ie creating the
ethernet interface and launching pppd/pppoe on it. This is what I have
implemented and this is the most straightforward way for beginners.
However, this leads to some problems right now (mainly the fact that
speedtouch-stop destroy everything ... without waiting for PPPoE to send
its last packets...).

And right, since the version 1.3, the pppoa2/pppoa3 has been modified to
output the interface name on stdout. You MUST use this interface.

Hummm The green modem is the Speedtouch USB, not Speedtouch 330.
As far as firmware is concerned, i might say that it is the intellectual
property of Alcatel/Thomson and as such, subject to some legal
statements. The first consequence being that such firmware cannot be
redistributed, and thus there is no driver that work "right out of the
box" since you NEED to download the firmware on Thomson web site.

Moreover, I think that this firmware is using the RTEMS real time
operating system. So, it's quite difficult to disassemble such code. So,
why would you want to disassemble such firmware?

Known problem. I fixed it in the CVS yesterday night. I will try to fix
the setup/start/stop scripts, would you like to help?

Concerning the firmware part, the easiest way is to use the .zip archive
on Thomson web site. (There is a link from
http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/).

You undo my change in a way. The mutex is designed to be kept in memory
forever (you can remove it if the modem is unplugged, but this currently
lead to some race conditions, so it's never removed). If you remove it,
speedtouch-start will not work properly (if your stop the connection
with speedtouch-stop and start it again using speedtouch-start, the
mutex prevents modem_run from loading the firmware again).

What is important is the exit code from modem_run, 0 indicates that the
line is OK and -1 indicates that there is some problem.

Redundant with the modem_run's mutex.

Two pid files are generated by pppd:
/var/run/pppN.pid
/var/run/ppp-${PPPD_PEER}.pid [only if you use the "link" option in your
peer file).

The later is easier to locate if you have multiple PPP connections at
the same time.

Yes. The hotplug is really a nice feature :-)
I impressed some of my friends... since it's not possible to have such
feature under Windows (for instance).

The 1.3 release of the usermode driver introduce a new feature that can
if not properly configured cause a lot of problem : hotplug.

Currently, each time you plug the modem or you load the USB modules or
whatever (each time the system discover that the modem has been
connected), the speedtouch-start script is run THREE times (it's a bug
in hotplug).

To solve the problem of knowing if the firmware has been loaded or not,
modem_run has been modified to have the following behaviour:

case 1: firmware not loaded
   -> it loads firmware
-> it waits for synch (30 s approx.)
   -> exit code is 0

case 2: firmware is loaded but no synch
-> it exits immediately with exit code -1

case 3: firmware is loaded and synch is OK
-> it exists immediately with exit code 0.

This is achieve using a mutex library (mutex.c) which is implemented
using IPC semaphore, to ensure that if you run several modem_run at the
same time, one and only one will load the firmware into the modem.

So, from that, there are two known issues:

- your script (modprobe -r uhci-hcd, modprobe uhci-hcd) doest not take
care of all the hotplug generates. That's why you got disconnected later
(maybe the -c option of pppoa3 is not properly used).

- under some circonstance, the mutex stay in memory and still indicate
that the firmware has been loaded where it is not.

I would say that it's not easy to maintain the "state" of the modem
witch accuracy in user mode since process can be killed (with kill -9)
and since USB events are difficult to track. Maybe we should find a more
easier solution with kernel mode driver (even if we still need one for
usermode driver).

A i586 rpm package and source package are now available. Those packages
have been compiled on a Mandrake 10.0 system with a Pentium II processor.

They are available on the Sourceforge Project Filelist:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=32758

I'd like to have reports from Mandrake users (and other RPM based
distro) about their success (failure?) to use it.

As far as usermode driver are concerned, everything could be implemented
in usermode of course :-). However, I agree that it has nothing to do
with the part specific to this modem (the real driver in a way).

Where is this OAM flows documented? Is there some standard documents
saying the proper behaviour of the ATM layer in such a way that it could
be use for checking our code later?

Beware that you need to wait for modem_run to return since modem_run
wait for the ADSL synchronisation before returning. It can take up to 30
seconds.

Concerning the firmware, you can use the file KQD6_3.012 in the .zip

Right. A new driver has been released. There are still some minor bugs
(like yours) and the http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/ site has not
been updated yet.

=
PLEASE, read the file INSTALL or INSTALL.fr in the package to know how
to install it. It is VERY different from previous release (and hopefully
a lot easier).
==

The following changes have been made:

- Linux hotplug support: you can now connect/disconnect to the Internet
simply by pluging in the modem or unplugging it.

- Easier setup: You can still manually configure all files, however
there is a script speedtouch-setup which take care of everything (nearly).

- PPPoE support : The driver had support for PPPoE, but now the
configuration script can be use to configure it! Simply run :
speedtouch-setup --pppoe

- Compilation can be done in directories containing spaces.

- The "-e 1" option to pppoa3 is no longer needed since it's done by
default. This option is harmless on older revision of speedtouch modem.
So, from now on, all the modem revision can be used in the same way!

- Firmwares are now easily downloadable from the Thomson site in one
.zip file. Look at : http://www.speedtouch.com/driver_upgrade_lx_3.0.1.2.htm

- Man pages have been updated and section renamed according to Debian
policy. The following man pages are available : modem_run(8), pppoa2(8),
pppoa3(8), speedtouch-setup(1), speedtouch-start(1) and speedtouch-stop(1).

Known bugs:

- All the scripts have not been tested under BSD! So, under those OS,
you can still use the manual method. If you are using BSD, please
contact the developpers for beta testing!

Happy SpeedTouch!

PS: Jorge, thanks for your report. Your patch will be modified and

tap0 is created by pppoa3. You can check the existence of tap0 with
ifconfig -a.

However, it seems that in some cases, the interface is not brought up.
And i'd like to know why! The workaround seems to do a simple:

ifconfig tap0 up

before you run your pppd command line as usual.

Tell us if this does the trick. What kernel/distro are you using?

You are mixing PPPoE and PPPoA mode. Which one should you be using?

When using PPPoA:

- in your adsl file, remove the -b option
- start the connection with pppd call adsl updetach

When using PPPoE:

- in your adsl file, replace pty line with pty "pppoe -s -I tap0"
- run pppoa3 -vpi 0 -vci 35 -b. This will create the tap0 interface.
- check that your provider is running PPPoE with : pppoe -A -I tap0
- start the connection with pppd call adsl updetach

The line speed is not related to the modem in any case. Its a parameter
sent by your line provider (which can be different from your ISP). I
would suggest to download/upload files with both access (speedtouch and
router) to see if that really makes a difference.

Bonjour Pierre,

That's right. You end up with a line like:

pty "/usr/local/sbin/pppoa3 -e 1 -vpi 8 -vci 35 -c"

in your /etc/ppp/peers/adsl file.

Hi Stéphane,

1. -v options has been removed from CVS

2. The irc server is now irc.freenode.net (documentation has been
updated). Still on #speedtouch.

Works on 2.6.4 for me (added "-e 1" to pppoa3 options to make it work,

[speedtouch] speedtouch 1.2 is out!

2004-03-18 Thread Benoit PAPILLAULT
The speedtouch-1.2 driver is out! You can download it on
http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/ as usual. All revisions 4.0 modems
are now fully supported.

Warning: the documentation has not been fully updated yet.

Briefly, to use it with a revision 4.0 modem, you need to replace the
modem_run command line with:

modem_run -a ZZZLP1.eni -f ZZZLP2.eni

where ZZZLP1.eni and ZZZLP2.eni are the firmware files from the Windows
drivers.

Enjoy!

[speedtouch] Re: how do i unsubscribe from this list ?

2003-10-31 Thread Benoit PAPILLAULT
Hi,

The mailing list is currently suffering from SPAM. All SPAMS are sent to the
robot handling the mailing list (me and francois). I also receive all mail
errors (bad smtp, unknow mail, no smtp relay, timeout connecting to smtp,
connection refused by smtp, ...).

Errors are always increasing, so few information:

-> If you want to send a mail to the list, send it to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
only (not to [EMAIL PROTECTED] like Duncan or Didier)

-> People using a mail unknown to one of their SMTP relay will be manually
removed from the list (by me!)

-> People using a badly configured smtp relay (mails ending with 9online.fr,
jhpx.com AND vamegh.co.uk no longer works) will be unsubscribe too from now on

-> People using a badly configured scripts which generates errors will be
unsubscribe too from now on.

Keep in mind that each mail sent on the list will generates as many mails
as there are subscribers to the list. Some errors keeps generated EVERY DAY
until the list give up sending mail.

One problem with some of those errors is that i cannot reach people having
problems (since their mails don't get through). Normally, removing them from
the list will send them a last mail... that they will never receive.

So, if you are in doubt of being or not on the mailing list, you can ask the
robot by sending an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with only one line:

stats

Concerning your particular case, here is the error:
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: host solveit.hn.org[81.129.99.56] said: 451 Temporary local
problem - please try later

Regarding my new rules concerning such errors, you'll be removed from the list.
If anyone have better ideas about handling such errors, you're welcome.

[speedtouch] Re: Connexion (et reconnexion) automatique

2003-10-29 Thread Benoit PAPILLAULT
Bonjour,

pppd 2.4.0 is not "rather" old. I'm still using it without any problem

You're right. The sourceforge project seems abandonned. It does not
contain pppd 2.4.1. I think the right site is : http://ppp.samba.org/

Deux petites remarques:

1/ http://benoit.papillault.free.fr/speedtouch n'est pas le site de
reference pour l'installation du modem speedtouch. Il faut aller a
http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/docs.php.

pppd
solution : plusieurs RPC (rup, rusers, rstat) sont inutilisables, car

registe
HccaDoneHead (voir la doc OHCI
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/supportinformation/papers/hcir1_0a.pdf)
macro
du nom de BUG() [joli!!!].

cela).

Bonjour a tous,

Shame on me. You all received the BADTRANS virus via my email, since
I read my message using Outlook Express, which automatically executes those
stupid .pid files
even if you do not need read the message.

So, I won't install any virus scan or anything else. I'll stop using Outlook
Express immediately (and uninstall it), and Windows as soon as possible.

I'll read my email via webmail again, much slower, much pain.

I apologize for all the inconvenience, especially if you have been infected
yourself.

[speedtouch] Re: refcount bug in SpeedTouch?

2001-10-29 Thread Benoit PAPILLAULT

Hi all,

Wether your problem is related to usb-ohci.c, usbdevfs or the speedtouch
driver, it should be solved. Moreover, we know where the error is since it
calls the BUG() macro. I faced such problem myself on an old machine
and the only thing I found is that the hardware was a little bit buggy
(addresses read from some registers did not match addresses written on
other registers, which produce a kernel panic). But even if the hardware is
buggy, good software design should recover such errors instead of doing
a kernel panic so, there must be something to do on the software part ...
(kernel or user)

2001-10-29 Thread Benoit PAPILLAULT

Right. The explanation is very simple : if one process use the usbdevfs,
mounted on /proc/bus/usb. The file system can not be unmounted.
So the system refuses to shut down properly.

Normaly, "adsl.sh stop" should be enought to kill everything properly,
right?

Hello Graeme,

Few questions :

- Do you have SMP enabled in your kernel or a multi-CPU machine?
- Would you like to try the plain (good old ...) pppd 2.4.0 or 2.4.1?
- Is it modem_run or pppd that lockup your computer?
- Is your mouse a USB one ?

The simplest explanation I have is that pppd fails to make the connection
and that you do not have the HDL patch, that's why pppd launched pppoa2
again and again (which explain why the endpoint 7 can't be used) until
you have no more process/memory ...

So, remove the persist option in /etc/ppp/peers/adsl first, and check your
configuration.

===

For your information, this mailing list currently accept emails from people
which are not subscribed, but this can be changed and I can moderate those
messages.

Concerning HTML in messages, I found no solution to refuse them and as I
always said : HTML in not an official language in Europe (as French and
English). However, "quoted-printable" messages are moderated AND refused.

I guess you have an internal network on 192.168.0/24. So, if you add a
simple route instead of a default route to eth0, it will work. I use
"route add -net 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth0" for the route
on eth0 and next, pppd automatically add the default route to the Internet
through the ADSL connection.

You do not need to use ARP on your ppp0 interface, so remove the
"proxyarp" option or add "noproxyarp" to your /etc/ppp/peers/adsl file.

I suggest you remove the "persist" keyword from your /etc/ppp/peers/adsl
file in order to test your connection. If not, pppd tries to relaunch
pppoa2 forever until there are no more processes.

You can even comment the "connect" line in the "adsl" files. That'll be

Hum... that's normal since this line is in the kernel sources. There no
way to remove it except recompiling your kernel sources. I can't tell you
in which file you have to comment the line, since it does not appear again
