[speedtouch] Re: Fedora Core 2 Test 3 Issues (2.6.5 kernel)

2004-05-26 Thread Aad Rijnberg

Hi,

thanks to you all I have got the Speedtouch operational with the kernel
module.

This incorporated the following steps:
- install kernel-source rpm
- apply patches of Duncan for usb
- configure the kernel to include ATM, PPP Over ATM support, Speedtouch
(and RFC1483/2684 Bridged Protocols, but I doubt if that is required
  for pppoatm)
- Âmake and Âmake modules_install install for the kernel
- add new kernel to grub.conf
- use speedbundle-1.0, where the kernel-module part is not built/
  installed.

Then I see still some errors/warnings during boot, but the modem is
operational (I sent this mail via FC2 using the kernel module). See the
part of /var/log/messages related to the ST330:

Everything operates however properly.

Thanks all for the support! I will give feedback to Eric Brasseur who
already has a webpages online with solutions for the Speedtouch 330 on
FC1 (kernel space) and FC2 (user space).

Aad

Those modification have been made in modem_run, pppoa2 and pppoa3 in the
CVS repository of the speedtouch usermode driver.

Look at http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=32758 for instructions on
accessing CVS.

FYI, Arjan van de Ven has made available a test kernel (2.6.6-1.383,
"update to 2.6.7-rc1") for Fedora Core 2 that features a "major USB
update". I assume these are Duncan's patches for 2.6.7.

actually there is, but you're going to have to wait a bit. You can get
rid of some of them by removing the (pointless) set_configuration bits
in modem_run.c

They are not the same thing at all. The kernel needs to have support
for ATM etc. The linux-atm stuff is a library that talks to the kernel's
ATM stuff. You need it if you want to do anything with the kernel's
ATM support. ppp over atm, is a ppp extention that uses the linux-atm
library to talk to the kernel's atm layer. In short, you need it all - it's
all different stuff that works together.

No, they are two sides of the same coin: on one side deep kernel foo that
adds ATM stuff to the networking layer, on the other side libraries and programs
that use that kernel stuff. It is similar to: in order to open a normal internet
connection you need kernel support for tcp/ip (analog of kernel support for
ATM). You also need the sockets library (analog of linux-atm libraries). And
then you need a program that uses those sockets (analog of pppd - not a very
good analog here).

Ciao,

Duncan.

I started the thread when using test3, but in the mean time I had

I didn't make/install pppd, linux-atm and kernel-module, because I
thought that they might conflict with kernel-2.6. When configuring the
kernel I selected atm, ppp over atm and the speedtouch kernel driver, so
I thought that I didn't need these speedbundle parts.

OK, I will try to compile and use the version contained in speedbundle.
But how are the linux-atm and pppd "packages" in speedbundle related to
the stuff I activated in the kernel configuration? Are they a different
way to obtain the same functionality?

Hi all,

My adsl connexion on my brand new FC2 installation comes back this
morning, thanks to all of you on this list !

So, for all the guys that didn't manage to connect yet, here are some
RPM I made to make speedtouch green manta modem works (and maybe others)
on your FC2

http://grumz.dyndns.org/ADSL_FC2/

maybe somebody can mirror this link on a server with a larger bandwidth
than my adsl connexion, in order more people can access it.

For the solution, I recompile the kernel of redhat with the patches
duncan gave us 2 days ago + all the missing config options (ATM, pppoa,
speedtouch), I compile linux-atm, pppd with the pppoa patch find on
http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch and modem_run of Benoit papillault
(speedtouch-1.2 package).

After you install the above packages, you need to configure you
pap/chap-secret files and put your username and vci.vpi in the
/etc/ppp/peers/speedtch file installed by the speedtouch package. and
then you plug your modem and start your connection with :

service adsl start

you can add in your crontab a script to check your connection :

*/5 * * * * root /usr/sbin/check_adsl.sh

And that's all folks !

Thanks again for your help and I hope my contribution will help !

Best regards,

Fred

Like duncan said earlier, you need a pppoa aware pppd daemon. In order
to have this, you need to compile linux-atm and pppd present in the
speedbundle package.

But, you are right, It won't compile with the default FC2 install. It
will complain about a function called billi_in_use or something like
that. It's because the include files of the kernel present in
/usr/include/linux are too old (They should come from the kernel
installed when the fedora folks compiled all the system, which is the
behavior that linus torvalds advices). To work this around, you should
(re)move all atm*.h file in /usr/include/linux and replace them with
those present in the 2.6.5 kernel sources.
After that, all works for me except that modem_run failed at the end of
its initialization because of the bug in the kernel.
With the kernel patches given by duncan, I think it should allow us to
use the kernel driver with FC2.

Best regards,

Fred

I'm using Fedora Core 1, but I'll throw in my 2 cents. The first cent
is that Fedora Core 2 final is out, so you need to get it.

Next, it looks like you didn't install everything from speedbundle.
Then again, neither did I, but you still need most of it. Are you sure
that everything compiled and installed? Did you make sure to get the
necessary firmware (It's not included with speedbundle!)?

You need to move your pppd executables out of the way and install the
pppd found in speedbundle. This will place the necessary pppoatm.so
plugin. But read the rest of this first.

run ./configure from the root of the speedbundle directory.
It will tell you what values you need to fill in the ppp_scripts and if
you need the firmware file (you do have the firmware file, right?)
There is a bug in the ppp_scripts, you need to edit speedtch and replace
the 0.00 with your VPI and VCI numbers for your service.

I think that you need the kernel-source package installed, but I'm not
certain.

Then try to make. If you get an error on the make, do a make clean,
re-./configure. You will most likely fail on the linux-atm or ppp. If
that's the case, you don't really need linux-atm (someone correct me if
I'm wrong; if I'm right, i would suggest leaving it out anyways, I think
this unnecessarily writes over stuff in your existing kernel), so you
can make and make install on each of the directories individually,
leaving out linux-atm. If you look at the top-level Makefile, you'll
see how it does this (you'll want to copy its lines). If the make fails
on ppp, check the output, it is most likely complaining about the
kernel. In that case, you need to use a standard Linux kernel for the
build rather than the Fedora Linux kernel (don't forget to move your
original pppd executeables out of the way before installing the new
pppd). If you don't want to mess with the standard Linux kernel, this
website , once updated
for Fedora Core 2, will have rpms for a kernel that is reasonable close
enough the standard Linux kernel to work (there will be two versions of
the kernel on this site, a Fedora-like kernel and a std-Linux-like kernel).

If you still get this error:
> May 23 08:07:47 localhost kernel: usbfs: process 1608 (modem_run)
> did not claim interface 0 before use
then I suggest editing /etc/hotplug/usb/speedtch and increase the sleep
time.

I rebuilt the source RPM from this site, rather than using the
speedbundle's firmware loader (they are essentially the same, though):

rpmbuild --rebuild some.src.rpm

The resulting rpm ends up in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS//
the "redhat" might be "fedora" or something else now that they are on
Fedora Core 2. Then I installed the RPM. If you can still get this to
work with speedbundle and without the RPM, great, but I couldn't for
some reason. If you do install the firmware loaders without the RPM,
great, but I couldn't get it done. However, if you do install this RPM,
be sure to erase the firmware loaders installed by speedbundle.

Peace,
William

Sorry, forgot to mention that this solution worked in combination with
the standard kernel that came with FC2 (no reconfiguration whatsoever).

Duncan,

I tried something else (see
http://www.4p8.com/eric.brasseur/fc2_speedtouch_usb.html), and that did
work. I have browsed the net with FC2 ;-)
I don't know if this gives you an extra clue as to why that does and the
kernel driver does not work?!

This solution uses however the user space driver, and I still would like
to get the kernel space driver operational. So my struggle remains...

Aad

Hi Duncan,

after applying the patches and running part of speedbundle-1.0, it still
does not work :-(

I have attached the details of my modifications and results:

Steps taken to get the Speedtouch 330 to work:

- apply the patches you mentioned to the Fedora Core 2 kernel
  - cd /usr/src/linux-2.6.5-1.358
  - gedit include/linux/usbdevice_fs.h&
  - gedit drivers/usb/core/inode.c&
  - gedit drivers/usb/core/devio.c&

- reconfigure kernel:
  - cp configs/kernel-2.6.5-i686.config .config
  - make oldconfig
  - make gconfig
- Device drivers->Networking Support->Networking options
->Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) : build as module
  - Then also select RFC1483/2684 Bridged Protocols: build as module
and switch off "Per VC IP filter kludge"
- Device Drivers->Networking Support->Network Device Support->PPP
Support->PPP over ATM: build as module
- Device Drivers->USB Support->Alcatel Speedtouch USB Support:
  build as module
- save all modifications
  - make
  - make modules_install install
  - add new kernel to grub.conf

- run (part) of speedbundle-1.0
  (see also http://www.4p8.com/eric.brasseur/speedbundle_fedora.html):
  - I don't have a (ethernet) network interface in my computer (no
default route/gateway)
  - Unpack speedbundle
  - cd speedbundle-1.0
  - Do not exchange sonet.h by another one
  - Put firmware at right place
  - copy ppp_scripts/speedtch-pppoatm to ppp_scripts/speedtch and edit
username and vpi.vci
  - edit chap-secrets and pap-secrets to include my isp-log-in
information
  - edit Makefile and configure script, to comment out kernel_module,
linux-atm and ppp
  - I did not remove the ppp package
  - make
  - make install

- reboot to see if everything works correctly
  - during boot I see the leds flash and in the end both leds are green
  - then I look into /var/log/messages:

Duncan,

I have also noticed the problems with FC2 test3, and am willing to try
to make the changes in the final version of FC2 which will be released
next week. Could you then please send me the required file(s) that I
need to check and update? And maybe some pointers where in the source
files I need to look...

When I get it to work I can post a patch file, so that every FC2 user
can enjoy his Speedtouch again.

Aad

It's a kernel problem and will be fixed in 2.6.7. Maybe the fedora people
can backport the fix (= a bunch of changes in drivers/usb/core/devio.c
by yours truly).

You better raise this issue at the [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Maybe
somebody on that list can update you on the status of Fedora Core 2 in
regard to this bug.

It's a known bug. I asked for the fix to go into 2.6.6, but it was decided to
wait until 2.6.7 instead.
