From a side conversation I was having.. 27.2.4.2.5 Does not discriminate. 33 says do it to EHII per 13. NFPA 33 9.2 something. THEN it supersedes stating area of booth. Nothing else changes. You just now have less area. .4/2500 = 1000 .4/1000(Insert booth size here) = 400 Chances are you

Ok, but this would basically fall under the room design method in 13 then and not require a phantom flow, unless I'm missing something, I have never added a phantom flow to a paint booth. Thanks Brett Peters General Manager Installation & Design Proudline Fire Protection Services Ltd.

Brett, I respectfully disagree. Well I agree but. 33 tells you how much. The procedure is still per 13. This is normally the case with other standards when it comes to performing calcs or hanging etc. R/ Matt Please rate our customer

In most cases the booth is smaller than the design area needs to be so every booth I've ever designed has been every sprinkler in the booth and throughout the plenum and exhaust, so you would be calculating the booth according to NFPA 33 not NFPA 13, the phantom flow is for NFPA 13 calculations

The answer is, yes you do. The “Phantom Flow: is a function of the Density/Area calc method. IF you could use another method, room design, then no. You would not have to ad it. Your area is EH. I am pretty sure you have no self-closing doors. SO, its area of the booth times .4 R/ Matt

I’d say NFPA 33 takes precedence which explicitly and repeatedly limits the scope of water flow to the booth only and frankly it doesn’t make much sense to me to add phantom flow for a paint booth anyway. Mike Morey CFPS 3229 • NICET S.E.T. 123677 Project Manager • Fire Protection Group

I don’t have the reference off hand, but if you go to the standard that covers spray booths and such, it says to just calculate all in the booth if less than, also including the duct exhaust. So, I believe in that instance, you are OK to just calculate the paint booth only. However, it is

As an additional note NFPA 2019: 26.4.1.3 says that the sprinkler design area shall not be required to exceed the area of the booth so my question basically becomes is it still neccessary to add a phantom flow for the difference of flow? Anthony
