- Mac System Preferences: "not responding."
- I launch Activity Monitor and kill Perl5.18
- Go to System Preferences and LMS and Start Server, then it's back to
running for a day or so.

Next time this happens, please check your activity monitor whether LMS
is using huge amounts of memory. Do you happen to be a TIDAL user?
Please try the 8.0.1 nightly build

I've heard of docker, but haven't done any reading about it... I'm
certainly interested in any stable sandbox-type applications that would
make LMS more update-proof, so let me know how it works out for you.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Mac OS X and IO::Socket::SSL:

2020-12-20 Thread the_arm

Hi Man in a van - it turns out I just did this exact thing a few days
ago on my mac, which is currently running Mojave. I assume it's the
exact same process. Since I've been mooching off the expertise of others
in this forum for years now maybe I can actually help!

Well first of all, the version to download is not stated (I'm guessing
that it is 1.1.1)
* I downloaded 1.1.1i  from here:
https://www.openssl.org/source/openssl-1.1.1i.tar.gz

Do I just download to home or make a folder?
* It downloaded a .tar.gz that I double clicked and it created a folder
of the same name. I moved that folder into a temporary directory, but I
don't think it matters - you could leave it in your Downloads folder.

I downloaded and looked at the install notes and I'm not sure if I
should have any tools or dependencies already installed (currently I
have Brew, which I used for lame).
* I do have brew on this computer but not for perl and I don't think it
matters. All I had to do to install was to open a terminal and "cd" into
the openssl folder and then run the four commands in the INSTALL file
located in the openssl folder. Namely:
$ ./config
$ make
$ make test
$ make install
* this created some new openssl magic in the same path that is
referenced in the CPATH of Tony T's post
* sidebar: I just learned that instead of having to type out the full
path when "cd"-ing, you can type cd and then drag the folder from Finder
into the terminal window and it auto-types the path for you. slick.

It seems that I have to do a git-clone and build.
* I didn't have to use git. I just downloaded open ssl from the link
above (which is referenced here if you don't want to follow the direct
link: https://www.openssl.org/source/ )
* At this point I just followed Tony's post verbatim which the exception
of modifying the path since I do not have another perl on this machine,
or at least I don't think I do. In any case, it worked without modifying
the path for me.
* One other note - when running the make commands (I think it was make
install) it asks some questions about yes/no if you want to do certain
tests. I just chose the default answers or yes if there wasn't a default
and it completed successfully

Regarding the setting of paths, from where in terminal are these
commands issued ?
* I don't think it matters since it is calling out full paths of
everything. I never left the openssl directory when calling these
commands

I guess I don't have to bother about updating Perl ?
* I didn't. I just followed the commands

* After it was done installing I just rebooted and the IO:Socket::SSL
was updated according to the LMS page.

Hope this helps!

FYI I'm experimenting with docker a little bit, for LMS and another
application I'm working with.

If you're unfamiliar, docker lets LMS run in its own container with
everything it needs self-contained. This -should- mean no issues with
perl versions, no general weirdness like you've got just now, and the
docker container is an official thing, so support may be easier as there
are more users.
Docker does of course have its own issues, but this sort of
containerisation looks to be the future

Now that you've reinstalled via zypper, does the yast services manager

I agree it's better to use the system-specific tools, so here goes...

- The yast services manager did not list squeezeboxserver.
- I deleted logitechmediaserver using the software management tool.
- I then used zypper to install the rpm (in my case,
  logitechmediaserver-8.1.0-0.1.1608064080.noarch.rpm, which is the
  version I had on hand).

The package installed okay (except to complain that it was unsigned).
But then:

Code:

systemctl status squeezeboxserver.service
Unit squeezeboxserver.service could not be found.

As before, '/etc/init.d/squeezeboxserver start' also produces the same
result.

I assume that your system does not have any systemd unit files for
squeezeboxserver (should be in /usr/lib/systemd/system, I think), and is
still using the SysV init? I wonder what could be different about mine?

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS 8.0.0 Mac Crashes Frequently with macOS 11.0.1 Big Sur (Intel)

Every day or so LMS crashes or becomes unresponsive. Intel based iMac.

- Mac System Preferences: "not responding."
- I launch Activity Monitor and kill Perl5.18
- Go to System Preferences and LMS and Start Server, then it's back to
running for a day or so.

- Additional info:
- Client system, Squeezelite 1.9.2 on Raspberry Pi, using Duet,
SqueezePad, or Peng.
- Two Squeezebox Radios on network but connected to mysqueezebox.com not
the local LMS. Patched successfully? Not sure. "Patch Installer"
selected results in "clunk" noise.

It doesn't look to me like residual LMS files are your problem right
now.
Let's try it with the suse-specific tools to see if that helps at all: I
tend to use YAST in the gui(or terminal) and zypper at the command line,
which I've found -sometimes- resolves dependencies better than rpm does
directly.

- If you go to YAST>Services Manager, is squeezeboxserver listed?
(This is just a question- the answer doesn't change next steps)
- Head to YAST>Software Management, search for logitechmediaserver,
and if found mark it to Delete, then Accept.
- In a terminal, navigate to where the LMS rpm is that you want, and
install it with zypper, eg :
Code:

zypper in ./logitechmediaserver-8.0.1-0.1.1607087403.noarch.rpm

I'm hoping that this reinstall using zypper might fix the service
configuration for you.

Hmm... well, that is very interesting, and useful to know! Let me try
and deconstruct the sequence of events...

I had been running an old version of LMS (7.9.2) until a TW update to
20201025 introduced Perl v5.30.3, and LMS no longer worked. I updated
LMS to the latest nightly of v8.0.1, ran 'systemctl start
squeezeboxserver.service', and all was well. Then:

2020-12-02: updated TW to 20201201 - this introduced Perl 5.32.0, which
broke LMS again. I tried updating to the latest nightly of 8.0.1, which
made no difference... then I tried updating to the latest nightly of
8.1.0, which also made no difference. That's when I first posted about
my problem here.

Subsequently, I was dealing with some issues related to a lack of disk
space on my root partition, and since I had a temporary workaround for
my LMS problem (running it on my wife's Windows system), I decided to
remove LMS from my system (using 'rpm -ev') to see how much disk space
it would free up. Then:

2020-12-16: updated TW to 20201209. Having now seen the discussions
between you and Roland, I decided it was time to give LMS another try. I
downloaded and installed the latest monthly of 8.1.0. That's when I
started to see the problem with the server failing to (attempt to)
start.

So, it seems likely that this particular problem is specific to my
system, and I somehow complicated things by deleting LMS. I know that
RPM doesn't necessarily remove all related files when you use it to
uninstall an application, though it's not clear how lingering files
might lead to the problem I'm having. One possible course of action
might be to try and do a more thorough job of cleaning up LMS-related
files, and then try a fresh install. What do you think?

The latest output led me to realize that a few files and folders had
limited access. Since I am new to MacOS it took me a while to figure out
how to change file mod. But after granting access to the log files LMS
jumped to life.

Yep, that's another too common issue on Mac. Sometimes the installer
fails to set the permissions on the log folder correctly. I'm glad you
figured this out - and it's a reminder for myself to keep this in mind.
M1 was a red hering here... Good to know it's working after all.

Yes, do try over at the openSUSE forums as they -can -be very helpful.
However, because I did a fresh update of Tumbleweed yesterday (after
your post) and this is fine, I don't think it's a global openSUSE change
impacting legacy applications, but something specific to your system.

Also from a logic perspective, have you done -another -system update

Because the squeezeboxserver service was being found OK then and was
starting to run (otherwise you wouldn't have run in to the perl
problems).

-Please note I'm not trying to argue, just help you narrow it down

Yes, I have come to the same conclusion - it is likely a very recent
change in openSUSE that affects legacy applications that do not include
units for systemd. I would think LMS would not be the only application
affected by such a change, so there should be some discussion about it
in other fora - I'll look into it. Thanks!

Hi all. Thanks for all work, especially Michael.

The latest output led me to realize that a few files and folders had
limited access. Since I am new to MacOS it took me a while to figure out
how to change file mod. But after granting access to the log files LMS
jumped to life.

Tried to attach a file with the output. If that did not work then let me
know and I will post id directly. One thing did not end up in the log
and that is

Can't open /Users/janritsvall/Library/Logs/Squeezebox/server.log
(Permission denied) at
/Library/PreferencePanes/Squeezebox.prefPane/Contents/server/CPAN/Log/Log4perl/Appender/File.pm
line 103.

Seems like permissions is denied and no matter what I try I am not able
to change the rights to that file. Tried "sudo chmod" and "sudo open ."
But was denied. Maybe that has something to do with this.

My system is brand new and I have only installed a few extra apps
including LMS.

Best Regards

Hi Michael, thanks for responding, I realise you are busy with lots of

Well first of all the version to download is not stated (I'm guessing
that it is 1.1.1

Do I just download to home or make a folder?

I downloaded and looked at the install notes and I'm not sure if I
should have any tools or dependencies already installed (currently I
have Brew, which I used for lame).

It seems that I have to do a git-clone and build.

Regarding the setting of paths, from where in terminal are these
commands issued ?

I guess I don't have to bother about updating Perl ?

I realise that this is all pretty basic stuff.

I have gleaned some procedures from posts describing how to build
squeezelite, jivelite and librespot, for example.

But I am "a bear of little brain" and sometimes a little paw holding is
greatly appreciated :)

It seems that the system update you performed on the Tumbleweed version
of OpenSUSE broke the backward compatibility with legacy applications
using SysV. I think you will get better advice on the OpenSUSE forums
for Tumbleweed.
Sorry, I run OpenSUSE Lead 15.2 on some machines, but not Tumbleweed. On
these versions the legacy /etc/init.d/ is executed if no
.service unit file exists.

What particular step are you struggling with? It's easier to answer

Thanx a lot you all for your hard efforts.

I am running the latest Nightly. Tried the one from this morning (20th
Dec LogitechMediaServer-8.1.0-1608447134.pkg) and still get the same

Gives the answer: #!/usr/bin/perl5.18

Gives the same error as described back in 2015

I did try a full rescan last night,
when i woke up, the LMS Squeezeserver was not running anymore.
I restarted LMS, and again its hang on Database Optimization.
The Scan File is empty:-(

When running the scan on High Memory, it is almost the same speed as on
Maximum, scanning around 1000 Tracks per minute, but on maximum it is
not finishing.

When setting to High memory, LMS runs super stable and snappy, even with
my huge library, much better than before on my Synology.

I will send you the scan file in Private Message, because it includes
Spotify information of my sisters account, but i think it is useless,
because i think LMS restarted during scan...
Thank you all so much, i will donate a beer via paypal to you and to the
Picore crew.
And as LMS runs super stable and snappy in High mode, maybe ignore my
problems with the Max memory, i dont want to waste your time anymore:-)

Best regards
