Have you considered leaving the Mac as it is but installing Squeezeplay
on it I.e. turning it into a (headless) SB player? If you can use the
digital out to a DAC then SQ is really quite good.
If you look for any post by Ralphy you will find his signature contains

Yes you have posted before my bad! Thnx again and sorry for
repeating myself!
All this new info is a bit confusing to me!
I think that updating openssl on the Mac is not very doable for me
because there are some steps before the guide in the link that I don’t
think I know how to implement.

I don’t mind setting up the server again. Knowledge comes with
repetition! No?
So I will consider the rpi4 option too.

I thought I had posted this before. But here's a good summary:

What problems might that create on my setup?

I think besides the struggle of the update process itself, it shouldn't
hurt at all.

The other option I am considering is another sbc, probably rpi4, for
LMS.

That's definitely an option. I'm running a Pi 3B+ with pCP connected to
a NAS (for the music files) myself.

So the question is LMS in old macOS/old Mac or in new sbc?

I've only done the latter. If you don't mind the configuration work,
then that's probably the simpler and more future proof way.

I didn’t use it a lot because I had to leave for sometime but as far as
I used it I didn’t notice something.

The other option I am considering is another sbc, probably rpi4, for
LMS.
The cost is about the same for me because I was considering to buy
another ssd to install in my mini in order to make the Linux os
experiment. I hope I will manage to solve the heating up issue with a
passive cooling case or any other passive cooling solution.

So the question is LMS in old macOS/old Mac or in new sbc?

I have it installed on an old Shuttle with Intel Celeron.

It's possible to run LMS and Squeezelite and a few more bits and bobs.

What Os would you suggest? Daphile? Ubuntu?
Now I use LMS installed on El Capitan but as said before there maybe
some problems because of the old macOS.
Would it be possible to dual boot?
I have completely no experience in installing and using Linux.

Thnx!

Found this link about the exact same mac:
https://www.zealfortechnology.com/2018/07/revive-old-mac-mini-2009-with-linux.html

An option would be to leave the existing ssd as is in case I want to go
back to macOS again and buy a new one to try Linux.

fits the USB-connected SSD.

Let's see what Lincoln Binns is planning on...[image:

It's not that good!

The volume knob is just screwed on from the back of the front plate it
does absolutely nothing. The LED is just a clear LED with the legs cut
off and positioned immediately in front of the Pi's red power LED, so
it's just acting as a light pipe.

Used as server only.

SSD just hangs down the back of the shelf, one of these, very small and
compact:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B078SWJ3CF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8=1

Note this case is for a Pi3 only, I asked Lincoln Binns if they were
going to manufacture a similar case for the Pi4, they said "Yes, for
sure". However this was before it was realised that the Pi4 runs very
hot, so will need to see what they come up with, if anything.

Which mods?
How does the backplate and cable routing look like?
Is it used as server only or server/player? (I suspect the latter, with
the volume knob).
Did you manage to fit a SSD inside? (I'm struggling to find a case with
internal USB cable routing, my PI3b server/USB-mSATA SSD on a Pi-sized
board are still simply sitting in an open, stackable case)

It would be great to understand more about your setup and maybe see a
pic of the back! Looks phantastic!

I think that I must wait a little before experimenting with pi4. I
suppose that some kind of metal-heatsink cases will be available and/or
some kind of software tweaks sometime in the next months. Hopefully...

If your existing pi is a 3B+ I'd go with that.

I'm using a Pi3b+ at the moment, in a nice case (Lincoln Binns - with a
couple of mods by me) where all the wires exit unseen at the back, I
can't stand wires sticking out at all angles.

I do have a Pi4 4GB but these run hot, until some manufacturer comes up
with a *similar* case that adds some method of cooling to a Pi4, I'll
stick to the Pi3B+. The Pi4 has been relegated to my spares drawer. :(

Thank you very much for your replies!

I have already installed LMS on my old, late 2009 Mac mini (el Capitan)
streaming to my rpi3b+.
I have also a rpi3b laying around.
And I am very much considering of buying the rpi4b (4bg).
I have tried LMS to my Synology nas too but it was not a very good idea.
(Old version of LMS and slow performance)

LMS options
1) Mac mini with macOS as is. (Potential problems because of the old OS)
2) Mac mini with Linux installed (needs wipe and dedicating the computer
to LMS only. Not that now I use it much anyway). It has 8GB of RAM and
128gb ssd, so it runs quite fast despite it’s age for media only
machine. The drawback of this is that it isn’t fanless and headless
(although this can be done I suppose)
3) LMS on a RPi (my existing rpi or rpi4 for better performance). This
has the advantage of using piCore and no need for another Linux distro
for LMS. Yes?
4) another better spec’d computer, SBC or not for LMS. (NUC, Odroid ...
) running Windows or Linux.

Any ideas / suggestion?

A Rpi can be a player (squeezelite, already part of piCorePlayer), a

Yes, that's absolute possible. I even think it's the preferred setup.
I've got a pi3 running with only lms laying around in the closet where
all the wiring and electricity is situated. This one should be connected
via a network cable. You might consider to power this one via a Ups to
avoid sd card corruption when power fails.
For the players I got a mix of pi, pi3, pi zero, an original boom,
radio, transporter and SB2. Except for the transporter all playing via
wifi.

I have installed around 10 or 12 powerline ethernet units all are better
than the wifi at there locations

They sometimes lose their connections with each other but a power cycle
of the units has up to now always been enough to reconnect.

A reliable connection with these devices will depend on noise on the
powerline, here in the UK we are relativly lucky in this sense.

Powerline's also have a habit of physically failing more frequently than
wi-fi.
I used to use a pair to get a connection behind my TV but kept having to
replace so I ended up running a cable there and invested in a pair of
decent APs to service the house with wi-fi.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Server Machine Alternatives.

2019-07-30 Thread florca

A bit late to this discussion, but after many years running LMS on a
"full fat" SuperMicro x86 Ubuntu server I migrated last year to an
Odroid HC1 and couldn't be happier. It has an integral 2.5" disk mount /
massive aluminium heatsink and runs cool, quiet and maintenance free
using a very stable Armbian / Debian Linux distribution. Copes easily
with a 13.5K track / 9 player system.
If I was making the choice now I'd probably go for an Odroid HC2, which
hadn't been launched when I bought my HC1 - essentially the same thing
but with added support for 3.5" / 12V disks rather than the HC1's 2.5" /
5V limit.

There are certainly faster and slightly cheaper options with more
"features" available (I also own several generations of Raspberry Pi and
will probably get a Pi4 for use as a TVHeadend server) and you do need
some basic Linux knowledge to get the thing running properly compared to
PcP / max2play, but for a robust, well-engineered mini-server device
with decent heat dissipation I think the HC1 or HC2 take some beating.

That said, for a first Linux system then the Pi4 / PcP option would
definitely be my recommendation and sounds like it's running very well
for you - welcome to the world of SBCs :)

Well that was easy (ish)

The Pi, SSD and a usb enclosure for the SSD arrived this morning and
it's all up and running and currently copying my library from the old
machine to the SSD.

When the adaptor board arrives I'll move the SSD onto that and put it
all in a little case.

Thanks for all the help guys, I couldn't have done it without you.

spot on.

to sync all the players (via Group) there is generally one or 2 that are
slightly behind. Ik it's possibly a network issue, but as I didn't

As d6jg suggested, is there a benefit to have the LMS cache and prefs
on the SSD?

SSD instead of SD card? Sure! The cache folder is the folder where LMS
does almost all write accesses, and where the database is being stored.
The faster it is, the quicker the scan would run, or searches would
return results etc.

Also consider max2play as OS for the Raspberry Pi. Everything you need
is readily available. Compared to Picoreplayer the configuration
web-interface is much better (and responsive).

In my setup max2play was more reliable as LMS server on a Pi.
Picoreplayer however was more reliable as Squeezelite player.

There is a modest licence fee for max2play, but it’s easily worth it in
my opinion.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Server Machine Alternatives.

2019-07-26 Thread drmatt

I would say that anything since the rPI v2 is more than adequate for an
infinite sized lms library. The only thing you gain from upgrading
beyond there is the ability to support more resampled/transcoded streams
(if that's your thing) or working with *huge* playlists. And when
working with huge playlists you need available ram more than CPU MHz.

Tbh I think the rPI 4 is a step beyond the original purpose of the
device. It's a different product, fast, capable, but runs hot and needs
active cooling, has a performance oriented chipset, lots of I/o
capacity.. it's no longer a hobbyist product. (Apart from the grrr
sdcard dependency.) I'm not sure I want one. I don't need 4k output and
I've not hit a limit that matters on the pi3+...

Yes to sharing if you install Samba which is easy.
Pi4 - couple of points
The version of pCp that works with Pi4 is beta only at this stage
The usb-c power circuit on launch version of Pi4 does not conform to the
standard. No issue if you use the official Pi4 charger.
Pi4 runs hot. Work is being carried out on its thermal characteristics.
May not be an issue in normal use but may be an issue during scanning
and possibly when transcoding.
There are currently very few cases for Pi4.

I purchased the 4GB version, but I don't know how much better/quicker it
is over the 2GB version. Something to take into account is the new Pi4's
run hot, if you intend to put it in a case, it would benefit from some
sort of cooling.

A Pi3B+ is actually quite good enough with a medium sized library, (say
50K tracks), well tried and tested, more choice of cases etc.. No USB3
though.

Yes, you can rip on your PC, and transfer the music files to the HDD/SSD
attached to the Pi using Windows Explorer or similar. You need to
install and configure SAMBA on the Pi, dead simple, everything is done
in a web browser on your PC.

Always plenty of help here.

One thing I do like about the odroid is the chance to buy emmc storage
for it, this will solve the remaining RPI major weakness: sdcard.. but
it's nearly three times the price of the pi so you get what you pay for
I guess.

The only time I've heard of people having performance issues with Pi's
running lms was back in the days of Pi v1 and when using crazy long
playlists. And then it's really about memory consumption I think.

On the other hand I've heard plenty of people complain about the
performance of lms on low end NAS platforms.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Server Machine Alternatives.

2019-07-26 Thread ho_kuku

Been streaming from my Synology NAS for years. Had the Odroid N2 for
retro gaming purpose - but I was damn free and bored one day.

Installed dietpi on the N2 and run LMS. Had the LMS pointed to my music
library on my existing NAS.

It was 1) fast and 2) sq was so much better when streaming from the N2.
So much that I beat myself in the head a few times to make sure that I
am not imagining. Smooth and quiet - harshness gone - darker background.
I had linear power supply powering both the NAS and Odroid.

I concluded that streaming from a NAS for convenience sake is ok (for
convenient sake). If you are going for SQ - I suggest running a
dedicated machine just for music. I easily get a 20-30% bump in sq by
moving LMS from the NAS to Odroid. To top it up - this Odroid N2 is many
times more powerful than the pi- used very little power.

I suggest to also use a linear power supply and better network cables if
possible.

Because of a problem with my main LMS server, for the last 4 months I've
run a pi3B+ with attached 4TB USB drive (holding a library of about
1.5TB of audio files, so about 3 times what you have). It uses
piCorePlayer setup. Easy to setup. Relatively fast when scanning
library, and perfectly good for browsing, etc. I have become very
impressed with this little setup.

*Home:* VBA 4TB (2.5)>LMS 7.9.2>Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio (all
ethernet)
*Cottage:* VBA 3TB (2.4)>LMS 7.9.1>Touch>Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio
w/Battery (ethernet, Radio WIFI)
*Office:* Win10(64)>LMS 7.9.2>Squeezelite
*The Wild (no internet): *PiCorePlayer 4.0 on rPi 3B+, hifiberry
Dac+Pro, 4TB USB (LMS & Squeezelite)
*Controllers:* iPhone6 & iPadAir2 (iPeng), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay
7.8 on Win10(64) laptop
*Files:* ripping: dbpa > FLAC; post-rip: mp3tag, PerfectTunes;
Streaming: Spotify

With that sized library I think I would use a Pi3 coupled with a NAS.
Install pCP on the Pi
Resize the SD card
Add additional file system support
Mount the NAS via NFS or CIFS if you must
Add LMS to the Pi and point it at the mounted drive
(All of the above can be done via web tools)

Alternatively you could use an SSD but backup might then become an
issue.
Easier to plug something into the NAS for backup purposes which can run
and not affect LMS.
As Michael said a NAS can run also LMS. Synology or QNAP are quite well
supported but I'd still go for the Pi as there can be issues with
upgrades on NAS that cause problems with LMS.

In my case I have an old HP Microserver with SSD running LMS but it
works in conjunction with an older QNAP (that doesn't now support LMS)
via NFS. I do this as the HP also provides direct CD ripping to the NAS
but otherwise I'd run a Pi with the QNAP.

I think Michael does something similar.

VB2.4 STORAGE *QNAP TS419P (NFS)
Living Room* - Joggler & SB3 -> Onkyo TS606 -> Celestion F20s
*Office* - Pi3+Sreen -> Sony TAFE320 -> Celestion F10s / Pi2+DAC & SB3
-> Onkyo CRN755 -> Wharfedale Modus Cubes
*Dining Room* -> SB Boom
*Kitchen* -> UE Radio (upgraded to SB Radio)
*Bedroom (Bedside)* - Pi2+DAC ->ToppingTP21 ->AKG Headphones
*Bedroom (TV)* - SB Touch ->Sherwood AVR ->Mordaunt Short M10s
Everything controlled by iPeng

Thanks for the replies,

My library is currently 460G so if I went with the Pi would I be able to
attach a SSD or would a large USB flash drive be a better option?

What are my best options, I just need to run LMS and offer a network
share of my music drive to other machines.

Cheap: A Raspberry Pi with piCorePlayer.

Less cheap: a NAS (Synology, QNAP have decent support for new LMS packages).
