[freenet-support] Are private keys private?

2002-08-25 Thread Chris Dennis

Hello Freenetters

As an experiment, I attempted to insert a 'genuine' copy of gpl.txt, and
wasn't surprised when I got a key collision because there's already some
other document with the key [EMAIL PROTECTED]

However, I was surprised that my node revealed a both a public and a
private key related to the file:

From node: KeyCollision
From node: URI=freenet:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
From node: PrivateKey=VvbCQY
From node: PublicKey=982UEb
From node: EndMessage

Does this mean that I now know someone else's key pair, and could insert
files within their namespace?

regards

Chris

Once Kaffe 1.0.7 was installed, I did nothing special to make Freenet
use it. ("Special" may be relative to user skill, of course. Note
that I'm Cc'ing support@ on these because I do think that a wider
audience is justified.)

According to their web-based mail archive, it went through.

Anyway, here's exactly what I did:

0) This is an i386 OpenBSD 3.1 box.
1) Downloaded kaffe-1.0.7.tar.gz from www.kaffe.org, and extracted it:
gzip -dc kaffe-1.0.7.tar.gz | tar xvf -
cd kaffe-1.0.7
2) ./configure; make
3) The make failed because of an ld error, shown earlier in this thread.
4) Went to the directory where the failure occurred, and ran this command:
 cd kaffe/kaffevm/.libs
 ln -s libkaffevm-1.0.7.so libkaffevm.so.1.0
 cd -
5) Typed "make" again in the top-level directory. It worked.
6) make install
7) Adjusted /usr/local/bin/java and javac symlinks to point to Kaffe:
 cd /usr/local/bin
 mv java java.old
 mv javac javac.old
 ln -s ../kaffe/bin/java java
 ln -s ../kaffe/bin/javac javac
8) Went to /usr/local/kaffe/jre/lib/i386 and added the symlink:
 cd /usr/local/kaffe/jre/lib/i386
 ln -s libkaffevm-1.0.7.so libkaffevm.so.1.0

That's it. My freenet node's run script just calls "java", so it
finds the symlinks in /usr/local/bin.

Feel free to use this information however you wish.

[freenet-support] Helping with bandwith

2002-08-25 Thread Francisco Reyes

I am totally new to Freenet. I have a FreeBSD and a Win2K machine.
Just to get me started I installed Freenet on my Windows Machine.

How can I start helping out the project?
I have 1600/384 connection. Currently I run the freenet client 4 to 8
hours per day, but don't see anything happening in the log. Will the log
show external connections?

How can others take advantage of when I have the client running?
I will later try to get Freenet as a service on my win2k, but in the mean
time is there anything I can do so my machine can help Freenet?

Also I am behind a firewall, which I control, and upon installation I
noticed the FNP(?) port was 16920 so I changed my firewall to pass this
port to the win2k machine. Any other port I need to open?

How active is the doc list. I have some thoughts for the docs, but don't
know if I should join the doc list first or if I should compile all my
suggestions and then join the doc. Currently the docs seem too basic and
in need of improvement.

Following up to this:

I poked around a bit using ktrace/kdump and found that the Freenet
java process was getting a "Resource temporarily unavailable" error
while attempting to read 1 byte from a file descriptor which I believe
was the socket. This problem occurred on all Freenet ports, not just
the FCP port.

It seems that there's some sort of weird timing/blocking issue going
on with this Java VM under OpenBSD (possibly a problem with the Linux
emulation?). If I execute this command:

  $ telnet pegasus

then it closes the connection as I indicated earlier. But if I execute
this command:

  $ echo -e 'GET / HTTP/1.0\n' | nc pegasus

then it works correctly. This makes me suspect that a read() from the
socket which was supposed to be blocking was actually being done in
non-blocking mode. Or maybe it's some other bug somewhere.

I've switched to kaffe (which I had to use a bit of hackery to build;
I've sent a message to the kaffe mailing list, but it's pending moderator
approval), and the behavior seems to be much improved.

So in summary, for OpenBSD users, kaffe 1.0.7 seems to be mandatory.

[freenet-support] question freenet et upload

2002-08-25 Thread Laurent Hamelin

Bonjour,

upload mensuel de 1 Go.

Cordialement,

Laurent Hamelin.

Re: [freenet-support] Attn.: webmaster of fmb and anyone else that can help

2002-08-25 Thread Stef

I'm new to this mailing list, but I know Freenet, FMB and Frost. I hope I can help you:

- You can download Frost from http://jtcfrost.sourceforge.net/downloadindex.html
(www.freenetproject.org -> "Third Party Tools" -> Frost)
To run Frost you only need "Frost.jar". In a new directory run the command "java -jar
frost.jar" and Frost
will start. Fill in the preferences (if not standard, for example other Freenet host,
port, ...) and wait for a
while. After some hours your Frost is updated with the newest boards. In the
Information window you can add
other boards to listen and post. Other questions: please ask in the Frost board
"frost" or "frost_help"

- For FMB: It's the software made by nacktschneck, his freesite is edition-based. (for
Freenet help read
Nubile's site http://127.0.0.1:/SSK@qe3ZRJg1Nv1XErADrz7ZYjhDidUPAgM/nubile/10// )
FMB is now in the version alpha4a, if a new alpha version is out, you can surf to the
6th version. You need
"fmb.jar" to run FMB with the command "java -jar fmb.jar". Then you should chose an
unique nickname; your
private/public keypair will be generated. Everyone can if a message is yours by your
public key.
Then you should rightclick to some active users and listen to their channel.

- I don't think that the freesite creator of colours is the same like the one of the
FMB-site. He wrote on his
site, that you can send him a feedback over Nearly Instant Messaging (NIM, it's
embedded in the freesite), over
the "colours" board in Frost or over FMB. His nick on FMB is "nobody else". With the
coloured links on the top
you can surf to other editions. If you reached the end of the chain, then is that
edition not yet inserted (or
it's fallen out of Freenet).

Good luck!

Greetings,
Stef

Re: [freenet-support] Re: unsubscribe

2002-08-25 Thread Stef

I'm new to this mailing list (eight days ago), but perhaps I can help you:

After my subscription I received a mail with the subject "Welcome to the "support"
mailing list" from support-

2002-08-25 Thread John Foss

HAVING TRIED UNSUCCESSFULLY TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR "UNSUBSCRIBE" I TRIED THE LIST, IN THE HOPE THAT THE WEBMASTER, MODERATOR, WHOEVER, MIGHT READ IT OR SOMEONE MIGHT ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO HELP ME. When I followed the instructions I received a message saying that I could not be unsubscribed as it would have a knock on effect, or something similar. I do not accept this. I received two replies :
1 from RL : Don't tell me about it -me too!  If you do manage to find out how to do it, may I beg you the favour of passing on the details.  I am tired of my mbx filling up with fatuous messages.
2 from Aaron Guy Davies   [EMAIL PROTECTED]   Read the message headers, moron. Don't you know what "List-Unsubscribe:"means? Oh well, this is the sort of idiocy I've come to expect from people dumb enough to use Hotmail.
I have , as I said, read the message headers, and followed the instructions, but to no avail. I use Hotmail as well as several other email addresses for the simple fact that it can be accessed wherever I am worldwide. I leave the list members to draw their own conclusions as to Mr Davies.
