Restarting them resulted in the downloads going back to "Internal error:
..." within seconds. I tried several times with several node restarts...

[freenet-support] #1173: Internal error: Found interface freenet.support.compress.Compressor, but class was expected

2008-11-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi list,

after updating to lastest mandatory build #1173 revision r23439 all my
downloads are failing with "Internal error: Found interface
freenet.support.compress.Compressor, but class was expected" as error
message. The downloads have been started and taken over from a previous
build.

Now what?

1166 has already been released, so using trunk after 1166 got out
essentially is "1166+minors"

Maybe I am wrong here?

Great! However I thought it would be finished before release of 1166,
but so I'll wait for 1167+ or fixed trunk.

[freenet-support] Nearly no content left with correct compression?

2008-10-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi guys,

I just updated to current head and have to find to my dislike that
nearly nothing is fetchable anymore.

Be it either the found data structure is "too old" and inaccessible:

Error: Archive failure
Freenet was unable to retrieve this file.
This is a fatal error. It is unlikely that retrying will solve the problem.
Failure in extracting files from an archive: An IOE occured: Not in GZIP
format

for The Ultimate FreeNet Index, Toad, Publish!, Freesite HOWTO, etc etc
etc, many many others

or the found data structure is "too new" and not parsed by FProxy:

Large file
Filename: bombe-51.tar
Size: 2.07 MiB (may change)
Expected MIME type: application/x-tar

This isn't a very productive and joyful situation... at least
backward-compatibility could be retained.
I'm back to r22882, at least then was 95% of the content working.

I wonder what's with the Frost boards / other non-freesite content
inserted? In what format are these stored?
Is a new full content reset approaching? And needlessy, too, I think.

A concerned citizen.

[freenet-support] Official SVN repository - where?

2008-09-04 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,

The Freenet Project seems to be hosted on multiple repositories:
- http://freenet.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/freenet (head is 22287, last
checkin 12:30:37, 31.08.2008, UUID 3a10de70-7c39-0410-8089-25560844f2f1,
obtained from http://freenetproject.org/download.html)
- https://emu.freenetproject.org/svn/trunk/freenet (head is 22417, last
checkin 18:00:12, 04.09.2008, UUID 67a373e5-eb02-0410-a15c-ee090a768436,
being the one I used to use)

I find it really disturbing to see that there are multiple repositories
- with one even being hosted at google and not even with https!

Which is the official repository? Are there even more?

Please get this straight.
Please close down all not official repositores.
Please update all references to the official repository.

Re: [freenet-support] quick question

2008-06-08 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
If these ten nodes are only interconnected with themselves they -of
course- have no access to the larger network and therefore form a small
private, albeit darknet, network.
If one of the nodes is connected to the "global" darknet, then the ten
nodes have access to the global darknet but routing might be impaired as
the other nine nodes will not connect to the darknet.

Opennet is a completely different story as nodes are seeded by seednodes
(therefore private networks are possible if the nodes don't access the
seednodes, but by default opennet nodes ask seednodes).
Also opennet nodes do swap informations about their peers, so nodes
without knowledge of other nodes might come across new noderefs and
connect to previously unknown nodes to enhance connectivity.

Hope this helped

Have you chosen as you node's port?!
Don't do this as it's need for FProxy.
Take a random number between 1024 and 65535 and try again

for me "localhost" is "192.168.2.1", my inferface's IP
and 127.0.0.1 is only "virtual loopback" without a "real" inferface

and if it binds to 192.168.2.1 (localhost) it's (of course and correctly) not
accessible at 127.0.0.1 and vice versa

you can bind to three interfaces:
- localhost
- loopback
- (all)
which all three indicate different interfaces

depends on operating system and whether you run it manually or as a service,
therefore i asked

>How can I verify that?

0) read the log for errors, usually there should be something if the node can't
start. if you don't find anything:
1) shut down the node, be sure it isn't running
2.1) open a "cmd" console
2.2) type"netstat -a -n"
2.3) search for a line with either "TCP127.0.0.1: 0.0.0.0:0
 LISTENING" or "TCP127.0.0.1:9481 0.0.0.0:0
LISTENING"
2.4) if one of these lines exists and your node is not running, then this port
is used by a different program and therefore the node can't start
3) then you can either:
3a) stop or remove the other program
3b) change the ports of the other program
3c) change the ports of the freenet node
4) also you can try to start the node nevertheless and perform step 2 to see if
the ports are now taken by the node. the node uses both ports, so if they are
both taken (after a node start without errors (see the log)), freenet should be
running

2006-12-23 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

1. "ant clean"
2. delete test folder contents as it depends on junit, regardless the
proclamation of default target being independent of them now it still is (here)
3. "ant"
4. compiles without problems
5. run
6. get exception on node startup
7. node shuts down

jikes is not installed here, compiling is done with sun's javac

"java -version":
java version "1.6.0-beta2"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0-beta2-b86)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.6.0-beta2-b86, mixed mode, sharing)

"javac -version":
javac 1.6.0-beta2

wrapper is not installed but it wonderfully worked without until now (yet
another*** annoying "must-have" dependency!!?!)

wow, juiceman. i meant no offense or harm to anyone!
i know it's alpha as i've been around since version 0.3, ran 0.7 builds <300
and participated in the 0.7 testnet.
what i mention here is that in the last few weeks there have been commits to
HEAD that effectively stop a node from functioning. of course this can happen,
but i'd like to see more testing before committing, and if the tests ran
through okay (which i assume they did) a
relatively quick response to the developers indicating a problem (my mail). as
i assume this is a configuration or settings problem at my side, i haven't
submitted a bug to emu. if it turns out to be one, i'll add one there.

so, again, no offense meant! sorry, you thought so :(

[freenet-support] ant build problems

2006-12-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
hi guys,

recenty i've got heavy problems with the ant dist build target.
for some odd reason it now wants to compile the test units that
a) won't compile here at all, so i had to delete the test directory!
b) "dist" won't build because it depends on junit which isn't installed here so
i had to hack here, too

who the hell fscked the buildfile!!!?

1002 seems to have helped. They're CONNECTED once more.
IP still isn't detected. I'm natted, so the other nodes tell me my IP within
their packets?

"No plugins loaded"

jSTUN never worked for me, either. It had an incompatible protocol.

Re: [freenet-support] Freenet 0,5 and 0,7

2006-08-25 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
0) be sure you have Java version 1.5 or 1.6 (1.4 will/should work too)
- type "java -version" in a console and watch the output

1) download these two files into a separate directory you've created forehand:
- http://downloads.freenetproject.org/alpha/freenet-ext.jar

2) change to the directory they're in

3) rename "freenet-r10260-snapshot.jar" to "freenet.jar"

4) run "java -cp freenet.jar;freenet-ext.jar;%CLASSPATH%;. freenet.node.Node

5) report problems :)

Re: [freenet-support] Freenet 0,5 and 0,7

2006-08-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Choose:

1) 0.5:

- the branch stable is in effect the branch unstable. both share the same code, eventhough the 'stable' is called 0.5 and the unstable "pre 0.6" or something like that

- unstable (eventhough the branch is called 'stable'): there are still major problems with the routing algorithm IIRC even in the latest CVS

- unsupported and utterly unmaintained for NOW SEVERAL YEARS

or

2) 0.7:

- no unstable branch because the code has to be settled and heavy work is going on, therefore a distinction between stable and unstable is not helpful at this time as both branches would be modified by a new release

- unstable - but in the sense of "unfinished", NOT "doesn't work". 0.5 is more "doesn't work" than 0.7 currently is and will ever be

- actively supported and maintained. New releases are nearly every other day. Bugfixes and improvements galore (that doesn't mean that 0.5 is bug free - all the known or unknown bugs simply aren't fixed anymore and nobody cares (for a good reason))

make your choice.

I already have and won't regret droppiong 0.5 which is, or better was, a horrible monster of software. 0.5 started up in a minute or so, 0.7 in fully operational in less than 5 seconds! (YMMV)

0.7 isn't a stable version either. It's a not nearly completed, far

from functional version.

SUN early access 1.6 beta 2 available at http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/ea.jsp

I'm running:

java version "1.6.0-beta2"

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0-beta2-b85)

Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.6.0-beta2-b85, mixed mode, sharing)

although s/o reported problems with this Java release, I've got a steady node.

If that does not help, try to get a JRE from other vendors like IBM, etc.

Check your machine's RAM, reboot windows often and hope your system libraries are okay.

Like I said - it's not problem of freenet. It's just triggering a fault in the JRE or your system. There's nothing freenet can do, although there are already some workarounds in use to help crippled and buggy JREs/libs(NTPL) it's understandably not the core activity of development.

I am using alpha software and my computer exploded and my house burnt

We all know that you are mad about that BSOD... but (1) it should be a
calculated risk that things could go wrong when you are using software
like that and (2) it doesn't help to complain about things like that
without more information (os, cpu, memmory, log-files, et cetera).

Hi,

./update.sh made my node unusable.

I tried to fix the problem:

 ./run.sh stop
 rm freenet-cvs-snapshot.jar
 rm freenet-cvs-snapshot.jar.sha1
 rm freenet-ext.jar
 rm freenet-ext.jar.sha1
 wget http://.../freenet-cvs-snapshot.jar
 wget http://.../freenet-cvs-snapshot.jar.sha1
 wget http://.../freenet-ext.jar
 wget http://.../freenet-ext.jar.sha1
 ./run.sh start

I hope the log-file gives information to solve this problem.

Could be a bug. I shutdown my node for now.

Try Freenet 0.7.

It's much more ressource friendly than 0.5 is/was and is the current main
project.

Check out http://wiki.freenetproject.org for installation details and more info.

The flavor is not that important. Just go for an easy to install
distro.

Please keep in mind that you also have to install Java Runtime
Environment: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

> Any other things I'm going to need to set up / know?
> Is there a readable faq/manual somewhere?

Yes. For every distro there are howto's (manuals).

> Anybody willing to help off list (via email or irc)

Just post your questions here. Other people could learn a lot from you
and others ;)

> After OS & Swap, how much of the remaining drive space would it be ok to

> Split temp & store 50/50?

No, you don't have to do 50/50. 1024MB swap-space is already to much.
Much installers can do it for you or - at lease - give hints.

> Does java for linux behave any better?

I don't know. It works for me :)

> Any tricks to configuring mainport.bindAddress & mainport.allowedHosts?

It works the same.

> What about fuqid & frost?

Frost runs out of the box. For Fuqid you'll need wine
[http://www.winehq.com/]. I am using CrossOver Office
[http://www.codeweavers.com/].

Just try. Don't give up to quick. There are a lot of helpful docs like
howto's and things like forums ;)

Good luck!

At http://localhost:/darknet/ I found "My Reference". There's also a

Re: [freenet-support] Freenet 0.7 does not start (java rel, os rel)

2006-06-03 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi all,

> Try reinstalling. There is a new installer that may not have this
> problem. [..]

It works now: Freenet 0.7 Build #779 r9029. Thanks a lot.

At FProxy Homepage I see the following text: "No peers found [..]".

I don't know how to get Freenet up and running from this point. I didn't
find information to get my own key. Besides that, I never used IRC
(well... I tried it ones, but got disappointed. It's not like ICQ or
MSN).

1. Where could I find more information about getting Fred to do some
work?

The older version (0.5) just connected to nodes. I didn't have to
add/share keys.

2. Where could I find my own key?

I found some help in the FAQ. But it doesn't work on my version.

3. Is there somebody who trusts me and likes to share his or hers key?

4. Is there an easy way to work with IRC? I found xchat and irssi for
Linux.

It looks like I have to:

a. connect to a server (irc.freenode.net),
b. then join a channel (#freenet-refs)
c. and after that I could chat (using some commands)? Right?

Is it something like that? I appreciate your help!

[freenet-support] Freenet 0.7 does not start (java rel, os rel)

2006-06-02 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello,

This is my first post to this mailing-list. I have used Freenet in the
past (version 0.5).

I just installed Freenet 0.7 using freenet-webinstall for linux. I am
not able to run Fred out of the box. I hope you could help me.

I think that the best thing I could do, is supply technical details. I
hope you could help me solving this problem. Thanks in advance!

freenet.exe' should end Freenet but it only ends the front end. Freenet remains
in the background. Repeating the function does not help (it says send the
signal but the process does not end). I guess Freenet backend does not respond
to Windows end task signal for
some reason. An alternative, you can use 'taskkill /IM freenet.exe /F' which
forces Freenet to end but of course this means it's not a clean shutdown. While
I still think a command line shut down switch would be useful, at the very
least Freenet should respond properly to
a Windows end task signal.

The freenet node runs with the name "javaw.exe". But if you don't know the
exact PID, simply killing by name might affect other java programs running as
they all have the same process name (java or javaw).
"freenet.exe" is just the bunnyapp (Yes, this confusion arises quite often but
nobody cares to give this, IMHO totally superfluous (hopefully 0.7 comes
without all these stupid extra-programs), app a proper name).

that's the version of the systray utility for windows, a small freenet
starting/stopping tool for windoze user convenience

the node's version is shown at the node's web-interface at
http://127.0.0.1:/ which btw is your first entry into the freenet world. if
you've made yourself comfortable check out programs like Frost, FUQID and FIW
that use more of freenet's capabilites

I was under the impression, that *every* answer to a request initiated by the
node would be stored in the "client cache" with a one-time-memory-only-key.
Other passing DataFounds would be stored as usual in the normal data store.

Who's wrong here?

Re: [freenet-support] Segfaults in freenet.node.ds.FSDataStoreElement$KeyInputStreamImpl.close()

2005-08-29 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The virtual machine you're running (Sun?) is segfaulting (accessing a memory
area that it may not access, often raised due programming errors).
This is no error of freenet or the node, but it simply triggers an error in the
virtual machine.

Consider upgrading your Java environmnent as the current release is 1.5.0_04
(or perhaps already _05) and yours is 1.4.2_09, which is rather old. Maybe your
particular bug has been fixed with a more recent JRE.

You do not need to alter anything on your current freenet installation; the
store and anything can remain untouched and it would be a loss to lose all the
stored data- and routing-informations the node has already gained.

Here, too - running in wine works perfectly.

But edit Fuqid's settings to: Logging -> none (in the upper right corner),
otherwise (old version of?) wine crash after some time

In FLaunch.ini try setting:

JavaMem=64M

Although that might be not enough to run freenet it's a first try. If it
crashes or OOMs, increase the limit to 96M, 128M,

is it possible to get freenet to allow me to overwrite the

Try switching to Sun's latest JVM 1.5 (http://java.sun.com/). You might
encounter problems installing it for gentoo as there are only rpms and .bin
installers; dunno if gentoo can handle these.
But any other JVM with at least version 1.4 should work, too (e.g. IBM's)

a "root server" is a rented server you've got root access on.
a "managed server" is a rented server you've got one or more user accounts on
and a (usually web) frontend to configure things where root access would be
needed for. you've got no access to the root account.

Re: [freenet-support] Site insertion woes

2004-10-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
forget windows 98.
it wasn't designed to run programs bigger than notepad.

in detail freenet and fiw use up so many network connections that win 98 can not
deliver that much.
it's a design flaw of win 98 and there doesn't exist a fix.
although there is a workaround which might work:
you can try to increase the upper limit of allowed concurrent connections

add the string key
MaxConnections = 250
under
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP

to your registry and reboot
if it doesn't help - increase to 512 then to 1024
if that doesn't help - get yerself an operating system (i'm using 98se too so i know
it's crap, linux is your only friend out there)

for free and pay for it.

Let them have some fun .

Never seen, with an Italian speaking friend, why "antani" remailer
has this name ? It is explained on the remailer site.

Yes, this is the default for Mixmaster remailer.
There is a detailed Comment: header that your MUA
 probably hides.

The body *cannot be changed*; is a philosophical problem ...

Probably in the unstable the problem of the
load bar constantly over 100% is already solved, but on

Er ... "futureworlds" is a Mixmaster anonymous remailer dummy address.

[freenet-support] Freenet stable insert

2004-09-20 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Can someone post data on how insert works with stable 5095?

From a couple of well inserted node I'm unable to insert:

1) a freesite that was previously inserted in < 24 hours
is still running after 1 week (using FIW, 5095, sun 1.4.5.)
 at depth 8

2) a single KSK from fproxy at depth 6

Any suggestion ? Many thanks. Marco

Re: [freenet-support] wget: a freenet trainer?

2004-09-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
mirroring freenet with a tool like wget is a nice idea to train your node.
actually i use this to mirror complete sites from the freenet network to my local
harddisk before they get a chance to disappear.
the problem is -> wget SUCKS when used for freenet: it is unable to handle freenet's
double slashes '//' within the uri (e.g. [EMAIL PROTECTED]//index.html)

do yourself a favour and do not use wget; use "puf" (google for it)
this downloader comes along fine with the '//' without being hacked and patched, is
able to download dozens of files in parallel (which is extremely useful as transfers
take a long time with freenet) and can be
configured much more in detail than wget can

hoped to help :)

[freenet-support] maillist reminder

2004-09-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The mailer of Project list is not sending the monthly
 maillist reminder.

I drop off lists a couple of time due to bouncing
 or other unknown reason.

The maillist reminder would be very useful to know
 my list status (no traffic or disabled);
 may it be activated ?

Ciao. Marco

Quite interesting, albeit not fully informative (what is codefrog ?
why codefrog and not another project? ).

I'm doing my yearly small donation to the Freenet Project,
but I'm still very disappointed by the non-public way
the Project use to administer the money that receive.

At the beginning the site had at least the running total
of the PayPal donation, and from time to time in the
donatio page itself, some news was given, as for example
the good news of your full time job!

Last year I wrote exactly the same thing, but received
no answer; I would be pleased to see from time to
time, news on the site ot maillist, about the
way money is used. I'm quite sure that I'm not
 alone.

For example, the Florence Linux User Group normally discuss
in public how the (few) money is managed, and use
a signed spreadsheet with income and expenses. Few minutes
each month suffice to update this.

On the main site I was unable to find the composition of
the Freenet Board or any detail about the way money
is used. The mission statement is not a detail, of course.

Your mail is the first news I saw by longtime on this
subject; I really cannot understand why
a formally managed project give no details of the
 way his money is managed.

A simple monthly mail sent to the maillist will be
 enought (IMHO, of course)

In any case my donation will arrive shortly

Ciao. Marco

RE: [freenet-support] Newbie : is my installation good ?

2004-08-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
hm, that is really poor. your node might be taught some other nodes.

download http://freenetproject.org/snapshots/seednodes.ref and store it within your
freenet directory, overwriting the existing file. then stop and restart your node so
it will reseed itself from that file, importing all
node references stored within. this procedure is called "reseeding". maybe you even
don't need to stop and restart the node; but as your node is pretty currently useless
to you and the network, no harm is done
when you take it down for a few minutes

Re: [freenet-support] 5090 quirks...

2004-08-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ack.

then i hope you're pleased with my other observations?

so one can say, a node is unusable without doubt if it has less than, say, 40
connections to other nodes, is halfway useable if less than 60 and after that it's
okay?
maybe the mainport could give credit to this and not only show the 'first time user
message' but also a box describing verbally how many connections there are and what
successes the user can expect with that
amount of connections. this might hopefully dam up the 'help! my node can't connect'
mails and increase 1st time users' rating. communication is usually helpful ;)
especially between cryptic and strange nodes and
freenet maidens

true, you're both correct, in fact someone simply *has* to use the new builds first so
the other builds can see there's something new around. maybe my answer was shot too
fast again ^-^

the comment was meant as an easy small step for node ops when to update; being member
of the support, announce and devl mailinglist is of course superior and preferable

hand ;)

(USA).

by default the only host which is allowed to connect to the node interface on port
is localhost (127.0.0.1) this is to forbid everyone else but the owner of the
machine to access the node.

in your freenet.cont/.ini there is a line reading:

# List of IP addresses (for example "192.168.1.7"), DNS names ("erica" or
"www.nsa.gov") or netmasks ("192.168.1.0/24") of hosts (computers) that should be
allowed to access the main web interface of your
freenet node. Defaults to localhost (127.0.0.0/8) only.
%mainport.allowedHosts=127.0.0.0/8

here you can change the array of allowed host for example to:
mainport.allowedHosts=127.0.0.0/8,12.34.56.78
where 12.34.56.78 is the ip of your xp computer.
please remember to remove the heading % which is a comment character!

you should also notice that connecting from your xp to the freenet node is now done
over unencrypted http. this means that if you're being sniffed your actions can be
seen and every file you retrieve out of freenet
will be unencrypted, too, which will utterly destroy the principle of privacy. if
you've got nothing to hide that *might* be okay, but ipspoofing/-claiming will allow
others to access your freenet node, which might have
negative effects on your reputation ;)

so the better alternative would be:
create a ssh tunnel from the linux box to your xp system (or vice versa). see 'man
ssh' and look for the -L and -R options. on your windoze box you can try PuTTY which
has a (hidden?) ssh daemon function; or use
a different ssh tunnel software.
this will protect your traffic and authorize the node access.
that's the way you should choose to go

>Also, if I have a router at home and 2 comps (XP machines) can I have each computer
>running a node?

of course, just make sure the FNP ports of each node are different (they're chosen
randomly, so they are usually different) and forward the two ports from the router to
the according xp box.

you can even have more than one node per computer! if so, you should change the ports
for the mainport () and the fcp port (8481) for the second node to something else
(you could possibly just add +1) so
they don't affect each other.

>With the above resources how do I get the most out of it? (configuration). My
>BIGGEST thing is speed. I hate not finding what I am looking for and I hate file not
>founds.

uhm, transfer speed of a splitfile is great and is able to easily max out your
connection as the split-file is retrieved in parallel from different sources.
overall, freenet has a large latency but usually a nice transfer speed.

404's are sadly quite common as the node first has to 'weave' itself into the freenet
network before it can archive decent performance and knowledge of the surrounding
nodes.
after that process it's supposed to run quite okay
you just shouldn't be afraid of letting the node run 24/7 for at least a week or so
(i'd say, the opinions differ) to let the node become part of the network.
also be prepared that a node can use up large amounts of the network bandwidth
resulting in massive transfer volumes. several gigs per month are common.

>What would be better, unstable or stable?

unstable is the testfield but has all the fixes first.
stable is more pleasant and is updated quite regulary, too.
if you choose to run an unstable node you ought to update the node every single day as
the unstable branch progresses very fast

don't worry, your node will automatically tell you when a newer version is available
(by noticing new build numbers within the network)

>Thanks.

uhm, or is the QR == RNF ??

what types of QR do exist? maybe the OCM should/could tell which type of QR the node
sent?

another thing with the OCM page:
the nice blue/orange arrows that indicate receiving or transmitting connections are
broken for some years now. but only recently i saw, that they *do* appear once in a

[freenet-support] 5090 quirks...

2004-08-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
hi there, today i've tried the new 5090 build and i'd like to share my experiences
with you.

first of, i've run into the 'too big seednodes' problem, too cutting the seednodes
into half and throwing away one of these halves helped, as well as the suggestion to
strip the file of every 'estimator' line, which
worked very well too (dunno if it breaks something either, but nevertheless all the
noderefs seem to show up in the RT)

one of the first times i started my node, it had about ~30 connections to other nodes
after not quite 1 hour. then i restarted the node (because i needed full network
bandwidth). the next node start provided me
ONE connection to another node in the first 20 minutes. even after 2h of uptime i've
come to only 20 live connections. that's weird and very depressing :-/ as you can
imagine the node was never really useable as
it was constantly backed off by all nodes it had connections to.

what i've discovered then is the main reason why i write this mail.
at the time my node had this only one connection to the other node i was able to track
the type of the messages which got passed between the two nodes.
interesting was, that the foreign node (i will now call it 'node B') was quite
"gentle" to my node ('A') as it routed some DataRequests and later some StoreDatas
into my direction. so one can say that node B tried to
integrate my node into the network and thus began to route some things into my
direction. not too many, but what i'd like to call "just right", means something like
around 1 message per 1 minute. (hm, i suppose it
could be more)

after some time the passed message types shown at the ocm connections page looked like
this:

Accepted3/1
DataNotFound0/1
QueryRejected 3/0
DataRequest 1/3

he send 3 DataRequests, i sent 3 Accepted, and now it comes.. my node responded
immediately with 3 QueryRejecteds! (all numbers were always equal when reloading the
page, 2=2=2, 4=4=4, ...)
the question is: why did my node reject the query?
see the following stats:

Current routingTime 0ms
Current messageSendTimeRequest 0ms
Pooled threads running jobs 47 (39,2%)
Pooled threads which are idle 7
Current upstream bandwidth usage76 bytes/second (1,9%)
Current estimated load for QueryReject purposes 39%
Current estimated load for rate limiting39,2%
Reason for load:Load due to thread limit = 39,2%
Load due to routingTime = 10% = 100ms / 1000ms <= overloadLow (100%)
Load due to messageSendTimeRequest = 20% = 100ms / 500ms <= overloadLow
(100%)
Load due to output bandwidth limiting = 2,3% because outputBytes(4589) <=
limit (196608,003 ) = outLimitCutoff (0,8) * outputBandwidthLimit (4096) *
60
Load due to expected inbound transfers: 0,5% because: 1000.0 req/hr *
9.950189371914758E-4 (pTransfer) * 86016.0 bytes = 85587 bytes/hr expected
from current requests, but maxInputBytes/minute = 245760 (set input limit) *
60 * 1.1 = 16220160 bytes/hr target
Load due to expected outbound transfers: 4,2% because: 5046.5665649684115
req/hr * 9.970089730807576E-4(2 0s, 0 1s, 2 total) (pTransfer) * 86016.0
bytes = 432787 bytes/hr expected from current requests, but
maxInputBytes/minute = 172032 * 60 * 0.8 = 10321920 bytes/hr target

my node was *never* overloaded --okay, the first few seconds after node startup the
messageSTR was huge-- but after that the node was constantly around 20-40% load; bw
was nearly unused (i set bw to poor
4kb/s up and down, but that was even never reached. a later removal of the limit did
not help, either), cpu usage was very low too as nothing happened on the node.

> why should the node answer with a QR? i don't get it.

of course the other node will be disppointed by my node's performance and decide to
route somewhere else (or it ignores the QR and hammers regardless earning even more
QRs)

maybe there's a nasty bug somewhere which leads to the massive QR diplomacy we can see
all around freenettown hindering everything as nearly all nodes are backed off.

The sixth amendment is the right to a public and speedy trial, the right to call
witnesses, and the right to counsel.
The fourth amendment is the protection against unreasonable searches and seizures.

And I've never suggested we ditch or add anything. Laws preventing you from
transmitting illegal material are already on the books and have been affirmed many
times.

I'd think the sixth admendment (protection from unreasionable search
and seizure) helps people get away with crimes all the time. Should we
ditch that too?

RE: [freenet-support] Showdown at the Freenode Coral

2004-08-06 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Really? I believe I did. Don't get mad at me if you chose to ignore it.

I gave you a link to the New York state penal code definition of criminal
facilitation. Which spells out very clearly that one only needs a probable knowledge
that his or her actions are allowing for a crime to occur.
http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/nycodes/c82/a25.html

I also provided an appeals court decision that affirm the convection of a women that
acted with out full knowledge that she was committing a crime.
http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/data2/circs/8th/032780p.pdf

I also addressed the issue that I ran a freenet node for a brief time and stated that
if for what ever reason it came up I would simply plead out and do some community
service. Though that would be almost imposable because there is no hard evidence I
ever ran a node, and NO evidence that it ever transmitted anything illegal. You can
fill all the complaints you want; the FBI has more important things to do.

Failure to prosecute does not set a precedent in any way. Similarly I would never go
to trial on this; I would simply plead the case out which also does not set a
precedent.

Quote - "The lack of honesty
and integrity on the part of both yourself and your employer is
no hindrance to this."
?

The operation of a node in and of itself is not illegal. Only when it starts
transmitting illegal information can a potential problem arise.

PS: We should really continue this in chat like toad requested.

Mr Matthew Findley

You made certain claims on this list regarding the possible penal
consequences of running a freenet node. I challenged you to provide
law and/or precedent references to support your claims. You failed
to do so. In fact, you silently ignored this challenge.

I also challenged you to explain the fact that you yourself run a
freenet node, in view of the facts that you (a) consider it illegal
to do so and (b) post from a US department of justice address. You
chose to silently ignore this challenge too.

Based on your own claims regarding the legality of operating a
freenet node and your disclaimer regarding the relation of the
contents of your postings on this list to your employment, you
are, according to yourself, either a liar or a criminal. Your
period of grace with me is coming to an end. Unless you provide
this list with an adequate - at my discretion - explanation of
these discrepancies in your arguments, I will cause a formal
complaint against you to be filed with the US department of
justice for running a freenet node and thereby knowingly
distributing illegal material.

What all this boils down to is that, following a formal complaint,
the US department of justice will only have two options: to
prosecute you or to not prosecute you. If it fails to prosecute
you, it will be setting a precedent very useful to freenet. If it
does prosecute you, all freenet operators will be able to benefit
from your defence in the case, no matter whether you finally get
convicted or acquitted. The way I see it, both alternatives are
good for freenet. You and your employer are just about to become
tools for the promotion of freenet's goals. The lack of honesty
and integrity on the part of both yourself and your employer is
no hindrance to this.

Taking all this into account, I would suggest that you talk with
your boss and decide on a strategy. You can create some rather
impressive FUD by going to prison, or you can drop the FUD and
acknowledge that the operation of freenet nodes is not illegal.
It's your call. I will wait 18 hours from the time stamp of this
mail and then act.

Sincerely,
ZP

Ok.
As for your business. I'm not totally sure how it works, businesses really aren't my

Here's something that may help illustrate my point better. Its the definition of

And as I explained one does not need 100% certain knowledge of a crime to fit the
legal requirement of knowing. It only needs to be proven that you had a good reason
to suspect that it is so.
The very fact that we're having this conversation or the fact that it's in the FAQ on
the site is more then enough to prove you had knowledge that a crime is taking place.

If that was true then the postal system would be in trouble, since I am
sure most people within the USPS acknowledge that illegal materials
(such as child pornography) are probably transmitted through the postal
system, yet they do not open every letter and every package to prevent
this from occurring, nor are they expected to.

Ignorance is not a defense and nor should it be. If it was it would be almost
impossible to arrest anyone. All you would need to do is have someone ask you to do
it beforehand.
Someone asks you to hold their box of drugs. Oh but you didn't know what was in the
box it must be a big mistake.
Someone asks you to help him into his locked house. Oh but you didn't know that it
wasn't his house.
Someone asks you to hide him from the cops. I guess it's alright because you didn't
know he committed a crime.
If you allow people to hide behind the fact that they simply didn't know with 100%
certainty that what they were doing was a crime no one would ever be guilty. It's
called personal responsibility, if your doing something it's up to you to ensure its
legal.

Someone that has drug deals happen in his yard does have a defense. He didn't let
them. If he had said 'Sure come on in and use my yard to deal drugs' (like when you
run a freenet node) then he would be guilty.
Ignoring an obvious crime is not a crime, you can watch someone get shot and killed if
you wanted. Ignoring your obvious crime however is quite punishable.

I would ask "Who is 'you all'?" and I would posit that the response is not
'correct.' (I would also insert a 'you people' and 'H Perot' reference,
but that would be controversial and too demonstrable of knowledge of U.S.
politics, no?)

Freenet is comprised of a wide variety of users. Many of those users whom
have been and continue to remain early adopters of Freenet are those same
people what were and continue to be early adopters of other emerging
technologies. They're in it for the tech, they're in it for the ideals,
they're in it to support the ability of oppressed citizenries (I must
wonder if that now applies to you in the States?) to have the continued
freedom to express their ideas. And for fuck's sakes, some of them are
just in it for the challenge of programming something new in Java.

More to a point, there are Freenet node operators what have no idea that
they may end up storing or transmitting illicit material. There are
Freenet node operators what have been convinced by acquaintances to try out
a new software program, one which is at the bleeding edge of networking,
one which hopes to offer anonymity to its users, and what have installed
Freenet to this very end. There are Freenet node operators what run a node
but don't make any use of its existance. There are Freenet node operators
what run a node simply because they have a machine with a nice linkup and a
friend what asked a favor of them.

I'm not sure where your 'village' is but here it works much the same way actually.
But the problem is that there is no machine that can just tell us what your intent
was. So what your intent was has to be inferred from your actions and your knowledge.
The fact is that everyone knows there lots of illegal stuff floating around freenet,
and one can simply not avoid responsibility for a crime by deliberately ignoring what
is obvious.
So even though you didn't want to transmit kiddy porn you made the choice to run a
freenet node fully aware that it could and would result in KP being distributed. That
right there is enough to establish intent.

As for why ISPs, Mail carriers, Bus, and others aren't reasonable is because they are
common carriers and protected by law.

In my village, intent to commit an illegal act is a prerequisite to
the committment of that act constituting a penal offence. Additionally,
not preventing others from committing penal offences is not an offence
in itself.

The mere fact that you unknowingly and unintentionally facilitate
the transfer of illegal material cannot be construed as an intentional
active participation in that transfer. If it could, then every single
ISP would be in jail because they all provide facilities which can be
used and are actually used for the transfer of illegal material and
they all damn well know that plenty of illegal material gets transferred
through their systems along with the legal.

As long as a system can and is meant to be used legally, you can't
go after the provider of the system just because some abuse also
occurs. At least here, we don't arrest the bus driver who happened
to drive a drug dealer to his drop-off point. We don't jail the
postman who happened to deliver a package with stolen goods to a
fence, even though the postman damn well knows that, among all the
packets he delivers, here are bound to be some with illegal content.
And so on.

Let me also remind you that "the uploader" on freenet is too
complicated a term to be used as loosely as you do. The fact that
a file is served from my system does not mean that I put it there.
Nor does it mean that it will still be there next week when some
over-zealous junior prosecutor raids me. And it certainly doesn't
mean that I am obliged to check every byte that other people (or
"the system") put on my machine before I allow it to be put there.
With your definition of "the uploader", every owner of every forum
and blog and news server and mail server on or through which
something illegal got posted, would be headed for jail.

Of course, YMMV. In countries where the law hardly matters, where
money buys acquittals and where prosecutors work to get convictions
rather than justice, irrespective of actual guilt, you might find
yourself in a sore spot no matter that what you did might have
been fully legal.

You are now assuming (a) that Big Brother has cracked freenet
and (b) that he doesn't care if that fact gets known and (c) that
a search warrant will yield more evidence than traffic monitoring
did. None of this needs be true and any one out of three is enough
to keep you out of jail, provided that traffic monitoring didn't
already provide sufficient evidence for a conviction, in which
case a warrant and a search are superfluous.

That's the systems themselves. Freenet itself is perfectly legal, so are guns. But
that doesn't give you the freedom to do what ever you want with them. You can't
upload/download kiddy porn just like you can't go around shooting people.

IANAL but there HAVE been recent US cases where major P2P systems have been
found not to be in violation of the law. Otherwise INDUCE would be
unnecessary.

That's because ISPs/Mail are protected by common carrier laws, you are not. They pass

FUD - since Freenet has other legitimate uses. We don't prosecute ISPs
even though we _know_ with 100% certainty that some of the groups contain
childporn. We don't prosecute car manufacturers even though we _know_ with
100% certainty that some cars will be used to transport drugs over
national borders. We don't prosecute postal offices even though we know
with 100% certainty that some packages contain childporn and some contain
drugs.

No one running a Freenet node _knows_ with 100% certainty that he/she is
trafficking anything illegal.

On the other hand, I don't live in the Fascist states of America. (See
link for explanation)

As for the INDUCE act (from what I've read) it applies to the creation of products
used for illegal activities. It would make it against the law to create a product
that's primary use is also against the law. In other words, it would outlaw
your willful blindness about what freenet is really used for. It wouldn't just
criminalize freenet, but it would criminalize you even making it.
I'm very much against this law by the way.

That is unclear. Otherwise the recent P2P cases where the RIAA has not
achieved victory would not have happened. This is precisely why they
need INDUCE to pass (which probably WOULD criminalize Freenet).

Its an interesting question; can it be willful blindness if you don't
have a choice? It isn't that people choose not to see the information,
its that they can't. Now perhaps they don't want to either, but it is
hard to see how someone can be said to willfully avoid doing something

But the IP where a request originates and the IP of the machine
where a requested file is stored *are* masked by the proxying
system.

Assume I'm the Gestapo and I'm running one or several freenet
nodes and logging everything that goes on. I see a request
coming from your IP. I can't figure what is being requested,
because the key is encrypted. I can't figure who requested it,
because your machine might be - and probably is - proxying
the request for some other node. Unless the requested file is
served from my own node, all I can do is pass on the request
to yet another node and I'll never know which node or nodes
finally served the file.

Now, if I'm not the Gestapo but something much worse, like, say,
Homeland Security, I could monitor the traffic of my peers in
order to discover their peers and then monitor their traffic
too until I have a good picture of the entire network. Traffic
analysis might help me figure who made a request and who served
it, but I still have to break encryption before I can figure
which file that request concerned.

Being the almighty Homeland Security, I do break the encryption.
Fine, now I know that X requested kiddie porn and Y served it.
However, I can't get anyone prosecuted for this. Y is going to
deny - quite truthfully - that he knew that he was serving
kiddie porn, X is going to claim that he just clicked on a
link not knowing what it was and was appalled to find out,
and I will have disclosed that I have broken freenet. That
last part is the worst, because then all the leftists, the
anti-globalists, the anti-war pack and other such terrorists
will know to not use freenet any more. Of course, the same
will happen if I get freenet forbidden: then the entire world
will keep using it, except my local gulag population, which
is the easiest one for me to monitor. Thus, I have to let
freenet live and let the kiddie porn pass and concentrate on
finding out who inserts subversive propaganda against our
Beloved Leader.

Or something like that. The real and ever-present danger
against freenet is not in your IP being shown to your peers.
It is in (a) the integrity of its developers and (b) in the
security of the software archive. If the latter ever gets
compromised, we might all end up running a piece of Big
Broher-owned spyware called "freenet".

moving the files into a subfolder would to it just fine and they could be easily moved

i suppose the heavy cpu usage arises because the node tries to contact all nodes it
knows. this of course won't work as it is not connected to the internet. a solution
would be to delete the routing table so it
doesn't even know of other nodes and it cannot try to contact them which will result
in a nice, fast booting and completely isolated local node for your tests:

- stop the freenet node
- cd into the freenet directory
- delete the files: ls* ngrt* rt* seednodes.ref
- start the node

HTH

if you want to re-integrate the node again download the seednodes.ref (or the .bz'ed
version) from http://freenetprogect.org/snapshots/
dunno, but it might be necessary to delete ls* rt* ngrt* again for the node to reseed
itself. then again maybe it will reseed automatically from the seednodes file if it
has too few noderefs.

PS: why OS/2 runs so much smoother is still a miracle... could be because OS/2's
network subroutines are better programmed than the ones in windoze or because the node
