Hi list, after updating to lastest mandatory build #1173 revision r23439 all my downloads are failing with "Internal error: Found interface freenet.support.compress.Compressor, but class was expected" as error message. The downloads have been started and taken over from a previous build. Be it either the found data structure is "too old" and inaccessible: Error: Archive failure Freenet was unable to retrieve this file. This is a fatal error. It is unlikely that retrying will solve the problem. Failure in extracting files from an archive: An IOE occured: Not in GZIP format for The Ultimate FreeNet Index, Toad, Publish!, Freesite HOWTO, etc etc etc, many many others or the found data structure is "too new" and not parsed by FProxy: Large file Filename: bombe-51.tar Size: 2.07 MiB (may change) Expected MIME type: application/x-tar This isn't a very productive and joyful situation... at least backward-compatibility could be retained. If these ten nodes are only interconnected with themselves they -of course- have no access to the larger network and therefore form a small private, albeit darknet, network. If one of the nodes is connected to the "global" darknet, then the ten nodes have access to the global darknet but routing might be impaired as the other nine nodes will not connect to the darknet. Opennet is a completely different story as nodes are seeded by seednodes (therefore private networks are possible if the nodes don't access the seednodes, but by default opennet nodes ask seednodes). Also opennet nodes do swap informations about their peers, so nodes without knowledge of other nodes might come across new noderefs and connect to previously unknown nodes to enhance connectivity. [freenet-support] ant build problems

Suddenly ALL my peers are BACKED OFF and my node is not able to detect it's IP
address anymore ("give a hint...")
What's wrong? Is this just me?
(My peer versions range from 998 to 1001)

Choose: 1) 0.5: - the branch stable is in effect the branch unstable. both share the same code, eventhough the 'stable' is called 0.5 and the unstable "pre 0.6" or something like that - unstable (eventhough the branch is called 'stable'): there are still major problems with the routing algorithm IIRC even in the latest CVS - unsupported and utterly unmaintained for NOW SEVERAL YEARS or 2) 0.7: - no unstable branch because the code has to be settled and heavy work is going on, therefore a distinction between stable and unstable is not helpful at this time as both branches would be modified by a new release - unstable - but in the sense of "unfinished", NOT "doesn't work". 0.5 is more "doesn't work" than 0.7 currently is and will ever be - actively supported and maintained. New releases are nearly every other day. Bugfixes and improvements galore (that doesn't mean that 0.5 is bug free - all the known or unknown bugs simply aren't fixed anymore and nobody cares (for a good reason)) make your choice. I already have and won't regret droppiong 0.5 which is, or better was, a horrible monster of software. 0.5 started up in a minute or so, 0.7 in fully operational in less than 5 seconds! If that does not help, try to get a JRE from other vendors like IBM, etc. Check your machine's RAM, reboot windows often and hope your system libraries are okay. Like I said - it's not problem of freenet. It's just triggering a fault in the JRE or your system. There's nothing freenet can do, although there are already some workarounds in use to help crippled and buggy JREs/libs(NTPL) it's understandably not the core activity of development. I just installed Freenet 0.7 using freenet-webinstall for linux. I am
not able to run Fred out of the box. I hope you could help me.

The virtual machine you're running (Sun?) is segfaulting (accessing a memory area that it may not access, often raised due programming errors). This is no error of freenet or the node, but it simply triggers an error in the virtual machine. Consider upgrading your Java environmnent as the current release is 1.5.0_04 (or perhaps already _05) and yours is 1.4.2_09, which is rather old. Maybe your particular bug has been fixed with a more recent JRE. mirroring freenet with a tool like wget is a nice idea to train your node. actually i use this to mirror complete sites from the freenet network to my local harddisk before they get a chance to disappear. the problem is -> wget SUCKS when used for freenet: it is unable to handle freenet's double slashes '//' within the uri (e.g. [EMAIL PROTECTED]//index.html) do yourself a favour and do not use wget; use "puf" (google for it) this downloader comes along fine with the '//' without being hacked and patched, is able to download dozens of files in parallel (which is extremely useful as transfers take a long time with freenet) and can be configured much more in detail than wget can hoped to help :) >Hi! so one can say, a node is unusable without doubt if it has less than, say, 40
connections to other nodes, is halfway useable if less than 60 and after that it's
okay?
maybe the mainport could give credit to this and not only show the 'first time user
message' but also a box describing verbally how many connections there are and what
successes the user can expect with that
amount of connections. this might hopefully dam up the 'help! my node can't connect'
mails and increase 1st time users' rating. communication is usually helpful ;)

by default the only host which is allowed to connect to the node interface on port
is localhost (127.0.0.1) this is to forbid everyone else but the owner of the
machine to access the node.
in your freenet.cont/.ini there is a line reading:

allowed to access the main web interface of your
freenet node. Defaults to localhost (127.0.0.0/8) only.

here you can change the array of allowed host for example to:
mainport.allowedHosts=127.0.0.0/8,12.34.56.78
where 12.34.56.78 is the ip of your xp computer.
please remember to remove the heading % which is a comment character!
you should also notice that connecting from your xp to the freenet node is now done
over unencrypted http. this means that if you're being sniffed your actions can be
seen and every file you retrieve out of freenet
will be unencrypted, too, which will utterly destroy the principle of privacy. if
you've got nothing to hide that *might* be okay, but ipspoofing/-claiming will allow
others to access your freenet node, which might have
negative effects on your reputation ;)
so the better alternative would be:
create a ssh tunnel from the linux box to your xp system (or vice versa). see 'man
ssh' and look for the -L and -R options. on your windoze box you can try PuTTY which
has a (hidden?) ssh daemon function; or use
a different ssh tunnel software.
this will protect your traffic and authorize the node access.
that's the way you should choose to go

of course, just make sure the FNP ports of each node are different (they're chosen
randomly, so they are usually different) and forward the two ports from the router to
the according xp box.
you can even have more than one node per computer! if so, you should change the ports
for the mainport () and the fcp port (8481) for the second node to something else
(you could possibly just add +1) so
they don't affect each other.

uhm, transfer speed of a splitfile is great and is able to easily max out your
connection as the split-file is retrieved in parallel from different sources.
overall, freenet has a large latency but usually a nice transfer speed.
404's are sadly quite common as the node first has to 'weave' itself into the freenet
network before it can archive decent performance and knowledge of the surrounding
nodes.
after that process it's supposed to run quite okay
you just shouldn't be afraid of letting the node run 24/7 for at least a week or so
(i'd say, the opinions differ) to let the node become part of the network.
also be prepared that a node can use up large amounts of the network bandwidth
resulting in massive transfer volumes. several gigs per month are common.

if you choose to run an unstable node you ought to update the node every single day as
the unstable branch progresses very fast

integrate my node into the network and thus began to route some things into my
direction. not too many, but what i'd like to call "just right", means something like
around 1 message per 1 minute. (hm, i suppose it
could be more)
after some time the passed message types shown at the ocm connections page looked like
this:

he send 3 DataRequests, i sent 3 Accepted, and now it comes.. my node responded
immediately with 3 QueryRejecteds! (all numbers were always equal when reloading the
page, 2=2=2, 4=4=4, ...)
the question is: why did my node reject the query?

my node was *never* overloaded --okay, the first few seconds after node startup the
messageSTR was huge-- but after that the node was constantly around 20-40% load; bw
was nearly unused (i set bw to poor
4kb/s up and down, but that was even never reached. a later removal of the limit did
not help, either), cpu usage was very low too as nothing happened on the node.

of course the other node will be disppointed by my node's performance and decide to
route somewhere else (or it ignores the QR and hammers regardless earning even more
QRs)
maybe there's a nasty bug somewhere which leads to the massive QR diplomacy we can see
all around freenettown hindering everything as nearly all nodes are backed off.

The fourth amendment is the protection against unreasonable searches and seizures.
And I've never suggested we ditch or add anything. Laws preventing you from

And as I explained one does not need 100% certain knowledge of a crime to fit the legal requirement of knowing. It only needs to be proven that you had a good reason to suspect that it is so. technologies. They're in it for the tech, they're in it for the ideals,
they're in it to support the ability of oppressed citizenries (I must

what run a node simply because they have a machine with a nice linkup and a

But the problem is that there is no machine that can just tell us what your intent
was. So what your intent was has to be inferred from your actions and your knowledge.
The fact is that everyone knows there lots of illegal stuff floating around freenet,
and one can simply not avoid responsibility for a crime by deliberately ignoring what
is obvious.
So even though you didn't want to transmit kiddy porn you made the choice to run a
freenet node fully aware that it could and would result in KP being distributed. That
right there is enough to establish intent.
As for why ISPs, Mail carriers, Bus, and others aren't reasonable is because they are

In my village, intent to commit an illegal act is a prerequisite to
the committment of that act constituting a penal offence. Additionally,
not preventing others from committing penal offences is not an offence
in itself.
The mere fact that you unknowingly and unintentionally facilitate

complicated a term to be used as loosely as you do. The fact that
a file is served from my system does not mean that I put it there.
Nor does it mean that it will still be there next week when some
over-zealous junior prosecutor raids me. And it certainly doesn't
mean that I am obliged to check every byte that other people (or
"the system") put on my machine before I allow it to be put there.
With your definition of "the uploader", every owner of every forum
and blog and news server and mail server on or through which
something illegal got posted, would be headed for jail.
Of course, YMMV. In countries where the law hardly matters, where
money buys acquittals and where prosecutors work to get convictions
rather than justice, irrespective of actual guilt, you might find
yourself in a sore spot no matter that what you did might have
been fully legal.

You are now assuming (a) that Big Brother has cracked freenet
and (b) that he doesn't care if that fact gets known and (c) that
a search warrant will yield more evidence than traffic monitoring
did. None of this needs be true and any one out of three is enough
to keep you out of jail, provided that traffic monitoring didn't
already provide sufficient evidence for a conviction, in which
case a warrant and a search are superfluous.

That's because ISPs/Mail are protected by common carrier laws, you are not. I wasn't aware of any cases where they hadn't had victory As for the INDUCE act (from what I've read) it applies to the creation of products used for illegal activities. It would make it against the law to create a product that's primary use is also against the law. In other words, it would outlaw your willful blindness about what freenet is really used for. But the IP where a request originates and the IP of the machine
where a requested file is stored *are* masked by the proxying
system.
Assume I'm the Gestapo and I'm running one or several freenet
nodes and logging everything that goes on. I see a request
coming from your IP. I can't figure what is being requested,
because the key is encrypted. I can't figure who requested it,
because your machine might be - and probably is - proxying
the request for some other node. Unless the requested file is
served from my own node, all I can do is pass on the request
to yet another node and I'll never know which node or nodes
finally served the file.
Now, if I'm not the Gestapo but something much worse, like, say,
Homeland Security, I could monitor the traffic of my peers in
order to discover their peers and then monitor their traffic
too until I have a good picture of the entire network. Traffic
analysis might help me figure who made a request and who served
it, but I still have to break encryption before I can figure
which file that request concerned.
Being the almighty Homeland Security, I do break the encryption.
Fine, now I know that X requested kiddie porn and Y served it.
However, I can't get anyone prosecuted for this. Y is going to
deny - quite truthfully - that he knew that he was serving
kiddie porn, X is going to claim that he just clicked on a
link not knowing what it was and was appalled to find out,
and I will have disclosed that I have broken freenet. That
last part is the worst, because then all the leftists, the
anti-globalists, the anti-war pack and other such terrorists
will know to not use freenet any more. Of course, the same
will happen if I get freenet forbidden: then the entire world
will keep using it, except my local gulag population, which
is the easiest one for me to monitor. Thus, I have to let
freenet live and let the kiddie porn pass and concentrate on
finding out who inserts subversive propaganda against our
Beloved Leader.
Or something like that. The real and ever-present danger
against freenet is not in your IP being shown to your peers.
It is in (a) the integrity of its developers and (b) in the
security of the software archive. If the latter ever gets
compromised, we might all end up running a piece of Big
Broher-owned spyware called "freenet".

i suppose the heavy cpu usage arises because the node tries to contact all nodes it knows. this of course won't work as it is not connected to the internet. a solution would be to delete the routing table so it doesn't even know of other nodes and it cannot try to contact them which will result in a nice, fast booting and completely isolated local node for your tests: - stop the freenet node - cd into the freenet directory - delete the files: ls* ngrt* rt* seednodes.ref - start the node HTH if you want to re-integrate the node again download the seednodes.ref (or the .bz'ed version) from http://freenetprogect.org/snapshots/ dunno, but it might be necessary to delete ls* rt* ngrt* again for the node to reseed itself. then again maybe it will reseed automatically from the seednodes file if it has too few noderefs.
